TUN/TAP Driver

May 23, 2009

Which is the best platform when going with the tun/tap tunneling. Is it better to use Xen or Virutozzo for using the Tun/ tap feature.

My customer is trying to setup something like this on his vps.

I was wondering what would be the best solution either xen, virutuozzo or hypervm.

He is trying to setup something like this on his vps:

" i am asking for a vps with two nics enabled...a set of 8 ips assigned to the second nic to send, receive and pass traffic as a vpn server."

Streaming Audio Related

Jun 8, 2009

I'm interested in making a site which would stream video game (RPG) audio to users through flash. I have long searched for a service that I could use to listen to that odd track from final fantasy 8 for example (and not some cheap midi) without going through hundreds of links etc. So I'm thinking of making one myself.

I know there are sites that host mass video game mp3s (gh.ffshrine.org) and also remix and host video game music (ocremix.org) but I don't know if what they are doing is OK by normal hosting standards.

if it is, <snipped>.

Selinux/Adaptec Driver

Oct 21, 2007

I am having quite a challenge getting openvz to work on centos 5 with a adaptec RAID card.

The driver likes the plain jane kernel..but then...

Configuration [OpenVZ (2.6.18-8.1.14.el5.028stab045.1)]

***NOTICE: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-8.1.14.el5.028stab045.1 is not a kernel. Skipping.

There is also another issue not being able to disable Selinux.
I have tried the normal routes and even attempted disabling it in rc.sysinit..still...this "security framework" is able to load it..and cause problems.

Openvz and SeLinux don't get along..even a little bit.

So..those are the two probably seperate issues...that prevent the poor server from booting.

Server For Audio/Video Website

Jun 2, 2009

I am having an Audio/Video website where I am giving facility to the users to watch online videos and use Audio Service, also with a download feature (It is not Live service)

Now I am very much concern where to get started from, currently I have hosted a website with hostgator on a trial basis as it is shared so it took me 30 minutes to upload a 20-25mb files and I checked on youtube I uploaded a 13mb file only in 4 minutes, is it because of fast servers?must be! (and yeh with same speed, same internet connection, so internet speed not an issue here)

Here are the details.

New website so not sure what will be the traffic like, could be like hundreds of users (not thousands I think) initially per month.

Data to be uploaded aprox 200GB

Video files can be like 15-20MB (or 20-30 minutes)

Audio (3-5MB files)

Target users (Could be from anywhere, europe or u.s mainly)

Now do I need a streaming server or dedicated server with streaming service from the provider? Any fast streaming service I could get under $100?

Audio Streaming / Music Download

May 1, 2008

An interesting question recently came up during a discussion which I wasn't too sure of the answers / replies being discussed - perhaps some members may be kind enough to enlighten me on.

The question is: What would the preferred / best practice be for a website wanting to stream audio (say some sort of music they have created) be?

A) Stream it from their own dedicated server (any advantages / downsides)? (assuming bandwidth is unmetered @ 100Mbps)

B) Stream it through a streaming media provider (any advantages / downsides)?

C) Make it availalbe as a download as opposed to streaming it from their own server?

Now, the issue is that the content is commercial - i.e. users wanting to download / listen to it would need to pay a fee - i'm not sure if streaming providers would handle payment processing, etc?

Any finally, assume the delivery platform to be a LAMP environment.

More Storage Solutions For Audio Files

May 11, 2007

we're LearnOutLoud and we're currently running out of space on our 1.2 terabyte server filled up 90% with audio files. We'll be expanding in the coming years with the audio files that we'll be adding and we're looking for the best option for storing our audio files.

We're talking with our ISP about getting an 8 drive chassey with 8 500GB drives for a total of 4.0 terabytes with a RAID setup giving us about 3.5 terabytes to work with. It will cost us in the $3000-$5000 range and we're just not sure if we want to put that up at the moment, as this growth will be over time and we may not even need all this space.

What we'll be storing on this new server would be just audio files (audio books that are purchased on our site). They are not accessed very heavily so we don't need to concern ourselves too much with processing speed or bandwidth.

We're looking into some other solutions for storage such as Amazon S3, Media Temple, and some other ones. We don't need a lightning fast expensive content delivery network like Limelight Networks, as their storage costs are way too much. We want something we can grow and pay as we grow.

IPS Driver Error - Cannot Create New Posts

Nov 1, 2008

I'm having problem with my IPB forum which runs on MySQL database (hosted on linux Fedora).

Our website was unavalable for a short time, and when it came back on-line, we found we cannot create new topics/add replies, in short, we cannot add new records to ibf_posts table. However, editing existing posts works, sending private messages works, so database seems mostly OK, apart from posting. Whenever we try to post/add new topic, we get IPS Driver Error. We have tried restarting MySQL several times, but it didn't solve the problem.

Looking at the error log, we notice the following lines (but we're unsure is it about this problem):

Quote:

[Sat Nov 01 19:32:06 2008] [error] server reached MaxClients setting, consider raising the MaxClients setting
[Sat Nov 01 19:39:25 2008] [error] mod_fcgid: fcgid process manager died, restarting the server
[Sat Nov 01 19:39:36 2008] [warn] child process 2281 still did not exit, sending a SIGTERM

and then several hundreds lines like this:
Quote:

[Sat Nov 01 20:21:53 2008] [warn] child process 26643 still did not exit, sending a SIGTERM
...
[Sat Nov 01 20:21:56 2008] [error] child process 26643 still did not exit, sending a SIGKILL
...
[Sat Nov 01 20:21:57 2008] [error] could not make child process 26643 exit, attempting to continue anyway
...

It seems really strange that forum and database seem absolutely OK, that editing and private messages work (and Admin CP seems fine) but that it throws IPS Driver error on new posts only?

Driver License And Credit Card With PayPal Payments?

I don't mind to identify myself with copies of driver licences, but CC is different story.

SCSI Controler Adaptec 7899 - Driver- Linux

Mar 29, 2007

I have got a server with the following specs:

Dual Xeon 2.4 Ghz
6 Gb DDR ECC REG
1 HD 147 Gb 15K

On the board, there is an SCSI adapter which is an Adaptec 7899.

This configuration is working perfectly under Windows 2003. However, as per customer request, I have to install CentOS, RedHat or Fedora. Even Debian is OK.

However, during the install, the OS find NO hard drives and the installation is aborted.

I googled some time and it looks that there is 1 million people looking for a solution on how to install Linux on a machine with an AIC-7899.

The installer loads a driver AIC-7XXX but didn't find the device anyway.

"Can't Connect To Local MySQL Server" + "IPS Driver Error"

Jun 4, 2007

During peak times (especially weekends) many of my site's users have been reporting intermittent 'IPS Driver Errors' in the forums and the following error in the coppermine gallery:

Quote:

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (11)

(The forums and the gallery are the main parts of the site).

I'm assuming that the site is having problems handling the number of users trying to connect to SQL. I tried increasing the max_connections and max_user_connections settings in my.cnf but it doesn't seem to have made a significant difference.

What do I need to do to fix this? Would I need to upgrade my server specs or is it something to do with the server settings?

my server specs: AMD Dual/Dual Opteron 270 with 4GB RAM.

USB Stick As Virtual CD

Jun 6, 2008

I have a server, with KVM over IP but without virtual media.

It would be nice if i can install the OS from a usb stick but i have some requirements:

It has to be some sort of net install since i cannot update the USB stick in the future, but it has to install each time the newest OS version.

It also would be very nice if i can choose between different OS’es

for example:

[1] Newest CentOS version

[2] Newest Fedora version

[3] Newest Debian version

Etc, i am still learning, so it would be helpful for me to learn different distributions.
