Editing Mime Types

Aug 27, 2008

Whenever I try to validate a page on my website it says it's invalid because the mime type is incorrect.

If I add this code to the top of the page:

PHP Code:

<?php
header("Content-Type: text/html");
?>

The page then becomes valid.

How can I update the mime type on the server so that I wont have to add this code to every page?

My server is a VPS running Apache with Plesk. I have SSH access.

Mod_deflate Issues - Not Respecting MIME Types

Jun 8, 2008

I've got mod_deflate set up with Apache with the following line in httpd.conf:

Code:
<IfModule mod_deflate.c>
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/css application/x-javascript
</IfModule>

It works well, for most things.

The issue I'm having is that mod_deflate is compressing binary data, outputted from PHP scripts as well (undesirable).

The script sends a Content-Type: application/octet-stream header, so I'm guessing that mod_deflate is simply not looking at headers generated by the script before compressing output.

I've even changed the default MIME type for Apache to application/octet-stream but to no avail.

Note that static content which has a defined MIME type doesn't get compressed - it's only the output generated by scripts.

Also, there is no defined MIME type for the .php extension.

I've also tried to disable the filter for certain directories, however, Apache doesn't seem to have an opposite to AddOutputFilterByType (although it does for AddOutputFilter (RemoveOutputFilter)). Also, I can't seem to stick in a negative <Directory> command either, which is a pain :/

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: Mime Types For Newer Office Files

Jul 24, 2014

I'm running plesk 11.5.30 and I'm having an issue with the new word doc format (.docx) being recognized as a zip file. I've read several posts that explain what mime types to add, and I've found the spot where I need to enter them. The part I'm not sure about is whether the custom mime types field is an addition to the current mime types or a replacement list. Does that field just needs the new mime types or a full list?

Server For Audio/Video Website

Jun 2, 2009

I am having an Audio/Video website where I am giving facility to the users to watch online videos and use Audio Service, also with a download feature (It is not Live service)

Now I am very much concern where to get started from, currently I have hosted a website with hostgator on a trial basis as it is shared so it took me 30 minutes to upload a 20-25mb files and I checked on youtube I uploaded a 13mb file only in 4 minutes, is it because of fast servers?must be! (and yeh with same speed, same internet connection, so internet speed not an issue here)

Here are the details.

New website so not sure what will be the traffic like, could be like hundreds of users (not thousands I think) initially per month.

Data to be uploaded aprox 200GB

Video files can be like 15-20MB (or 20-30 minutes)

Audio (3-5MB files)

Target users (Could be from anywhere, europe or u.s mainly)

Now do I need a streaming server or dedicated server with streaming service from the provider? Any fast streaming service I could get under $100?

IIS With Mime And Dat Files

Aug 18, 2008

I have a problem with a .dat file on my webserver. It seems to download correctly (I have added the mime type), but my application refuses to use/read the file correctly.

This is moving from an Apache server, where it worked perfectly, to IIS6. Apache reported the mime as text/plain, whereas I've tried both this and application/octet-stream on IIS.

The dat-file is actually a ZIP password protected file containing an XML-file.

Could there perhaps be some issues with dato format? I'm most greatful for any insigth into the matter.

PGP Vs S/MIME For Secure Email

May 17, 2008

Some articles on the Net seem to suggest (may be I have misunderstood it) that S/MIME, which uses x.509 certificates is better for implementing secure email as the sender can use the x.509 cert to encrypt and digitally sign the messages and the recipient only needs an email client that implements x.509.

Is this true? Or, will key pairs still need to be generated and the public key shared with the recipient in advance even when using S/MIME?

Streaming Audio Related

Jun 8, 2009

I'm interested in making a site which would stream video game (RPG) audio to users through flash. I have long searched for a service that I could use to listen to that odd track from final fantasy 8 for example (and not some cheap midi) without going through hundreds of links etc. So I'm thinking of making one myself.

I know there are sites that host mass video game mp3s (gh.ffshrine.org) and also remix and host video game music (ocremix.org) but I don't know if what they are doing is OK by normal hosting standards.

if it is, <snipped>.

FTP- Limiting Types Of Access

Is it possible to setup ftp accounts that have the ability for the users to view files on the server and upload their own files, but not download anything from the server? If so, how would this be done, if not, then as a 2nd option, do most hosting companies provide the option to disallow downloads on an ftp account if you need to do so, but allow uploads?

Audio Streaming / Music Download

May 1, 2008

An interesting question recently came up during a discussion which I wasn't too sure of the answers / replies being discussed - perhaps some members may be kind enough to enlighten me on.

The question is: What would the preferred / best practice be for a website wanting to stream audio (say some sort of music they have created) be?

A) Stream it from their own dedicated server (any advantages / downsides)? (assuming bandwidth is unmetered @ 100Mbps)

B) Stream it through a streaming media provider (any advantages / downsides)?

C) Make it availalbe as a download as opposed to streaming it from their own server?

Now, the issue is that the content is commercial - i.e. users wanting to download / listen to it would need to pay a fee - i'm not sure if streaming providers would handle payment processing, etc?

Any finally, assume the delivery platform to be a LAMP environment.

More Storage Solutions For Audio Files

May 11, 2007

we're LearnOutLoud and we're currently running out of space on our 1.2 terabyte server filled up 90% with audio files. We'll be expanding in the coming years with the audio files that we'll be adding and we're looking for the best option for storing our audio files.

We're talking with our ISP about getting an 8 drive chassey with 8 500GB drives for a total of 4.0 terabytes with a RAID setup giving us about 3.5 terabytes to work with. It will cost us in the $3000-$5000 range and we're just not sure if we want to put that up at the moment, as this growth will be over time and we may not even need all this space.

What we'll be storing on this new server would be just audio files (audio books that are purchased on our site). They are not accessed very heavily so we don't need to concern ourselves too much with processing speed or bandwidth.

We're looking into some other solutions for storage such as Amazon S3, Media Temple, and some other ones. We don't need a lightning fast expensive content delivery network like Limelight Networks, as their storage costs are way too much. We want something we can grow and pay as we grow.

Different Local Remote Server Types

Mar 22, 2007

I cannot find a suitable forum for this query so here goes on this one!

I am doing a charity site as a voluntary exercise. They currently host with Eclipse who have the Zeus server (site developed in Frontpage).

This is not an open source server. Thing is, what are the issues of say developing on my loacal machine (apache or IIS5) and having the remote being Zeus. I use Dreamweaver 8 for developing.

I would of thought this does not matter as the server technology is transparent and down to configuration files. The directory structure both ends can be the same.

Am I right to go ahead and not worry about this?

Video Files

Mar 20, 2009

Can anyone recommend the best cost-effective solution for serving up video files to websites on other servers?

Basically looking for a central storage location to hold video files (flv, swf) that will be hotlinked from websites on other servers.

I'm currently using about 200GB bandwidth monthly, and need to increase that to about 500GB without violating any TOS or getting cut-off/suspended.

Not sure if the best option will be a hosting account, file storage site, etc.
