Sendmail :: Hundreds Of Files Left In /var/spool/clientmqueue

Mar 10, 2008

RedHat Box running Sendmail 8.13.1, php 4.4.7, only 1 domain on it running the most recent vBulletin version and vBulletin has been successfully setup to run mail through GMail. The files in the domain directory have been cleaned up, ie. old unused files, etc.

Every night running into the same issue. Server goes on VERY high load due to sendmail. With hundreds of following processes:

apache 29425 0.0 0.0 6712 2576 ? D 19:31 0:00 /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i
apache 29426 0.1 0.0 6688 2500 ? D 19:31 0:00 /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i
apache 29427 0.2 0.0 7080 2572 ? D 19:31 0:00 /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i

I also have hundreds of files left in /var/spool/clientmqueue

I am a little confused, is the clientmqueue directory mail coming into the server or mail that is leaving the server?

If it is incoming mail to the server, is there a way to stop or minimize it's effects?

If it is outgoing mail, is there a way I can chase it's origin?

I would shut down sendmail, but there is 1 email address on the domain that receives mail.

Plesk Mail Spool Maxed Out

Jul 9, 2009

I upgraded to Plesk 9.2.1 and found that between the security upgrades they moved all the contents of /usr/local/psa/handlers to tmpfs, the problem is that I have a small swap file ( about 500 MB ) so all thos folders got inside that space, so far I´ve managed to make the tmpfs more than twice the original size, but mounted points ( /usr/local/psa/handlers/spool ) remains at the same size of 500 MB any idea how can I make this larger?

Router Suggestion - Hundreds Of Peers

Jul 22, 2009

for a router than can handle a couple hundred BGP peers, but will not necessarily be pushing a lot of traffic. The router should be able to handle 200-400 BGP peers, but will only need to push around 2-3 Gbit/sec.

What would anyone recommend for this specific configuration?

I am willing to spend whatever is needed, though I also don't want to just be throwing more money at it than I need to to get the job done effectively.

Hundreds Of Messages In Mail Queue

Mar 10, 2007

I have hundreds and hundreds of messages in mail queue waiting delivering. Log file says:

connect to remote.host[000.000.000.000]: server refused to talk to me: 421 4.7.0 remote.host Error: too many connections from my-servers-ip

delivery temporarily suspended: connect to remote.host[000.000.000.000]: Connection timed out

(I replaced real IP addresses with 000, my-servers-ip and hostname with "remote host")

It happends only with one host (the most popular free email provider in my country). All emails to yahoo, gmail etc are being delivered without any problems.

What does it mean - too many connections from my server? I have a busy dating website and php script sends out a lot of email notifications (for example - when users get new instant messages). Anyway, I never heard that email providers limit the number of emails from the same server. During the night time all messages from mail queue are being delivered, but at day time this number sometimes grows to 1000.

I have Postfix installed.

Yahoo Is Blocking Hundreds Of Our Legitimate Emails

Sep 9, 2008

We are a small ISP with about 5000 users. Only a very small percentage of our users can send email to Yahoo, and even that is sporadic.

Hundreds of our users' legitimate emails are rejected daily with the following message:
421 Message from (208.66.56.9) temporarily deferred - 4.16.50. Please refer to help.yahoo.com/help/us/mail/defer/defer-06.html

I have filled out "Yahoo! Mail Delivery Issues Form" a few times. I get the following automated response message:
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,

This is an automated message regarding your recent request for Yahoo!
Mail Customer Care support. We have received your message and willYa
respond within the next 48 hours with an answer.

Thank you for reaching out to us. We look forward to helping you!

Sincerely,

Yahoo! Customer Care

**Please do not respond to this message as no one will receive it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

But I never received a response from Yahoo and they continue rejecting our users' legitimate emails.

After reading many forums and blogs, it appears that they are doing the same thing to many other small ISPs and companies with their own email servers.

This practice can interrupt many legitimate business communications and hurts many small businesses.

2 Years With Lunarpages And I Have Left ... DONT USE!

Sep 13, 2008

While lunarpages is kind and offers great support. The support takes a while. They frequenlty get hacked or block your ip to where you can not access cpanel and switch your servers a lot in the past 3 months i got transfered to 4 different servers with the last one atlantis and prior one belogna. There support can take up to 72 hours to respond back where other hosts at max 24 hours. Their downtime has been around 97% not advertised 99.9%.

This is what really upset me.

I contacted them through email to cancel my account and they said they need more info, ok. Gave them info and they went ahead to renewing the account after I had gave them proper info. I tried to get this resolved for over a week now.

I thought since they renewed my account i should access my account and download my entire site, well I could not access cpanel again, no surprise there.

I just now got off a 20 min phone call and they tried to get my account canceled as I gave proper info to cancel the account so I would not be renewed and they tried to sell me their service for $75 to close my account.

I eventually had to threaten them to press lawsuits "not that I would even if it wasnt handled" and they said we will close your account and not charge you the $75 to do so.

My god! How hard is it to close an account with such service?

When I joined them my first year was absolutely great! It just has started to decline in the past couple months or so.

I rate them at 50% great because their supportive in all areas except for the slow response and canceling an account.

Dont use them ive had much better success with GoDaddy.... wow GoDaddy! I know tell me about it. GoDaddy is not my favorite host.

You need to be careful when finding a host becasue ive learned that they pay to be on the top. I am now using Host Gator with no compaints looking at moving to HostMonster for the price and services though should I?

Weird 404 Requests From Hundreds Of Unique IPs : Possibly DDOS

I kept getting multiple requests/second for a document that is non existent from different IPs.

Sendmail

Apr 6, 2007

i have two issues:

1) I had disabled the php mail() function due to spam, but this has stopped so many hosted scripts to stop emailing their users... how do I enable that function again?

2) in a failed attempt to fix #1 (i thought it was sendmail which caused it) sendmail has stopped sending in or delivering emails... not quite sure why this happened eventhough I backed up sendmail before working on it and reverted back when i failed to resolve the issue?

PHP Sendmail

Jul 31, 2007

My website is running of a windows server, and so doesn't let PHP sendmail work .

I only remembered this recently, and now know why I have been loosing out on clients.

Is there a work around to this? i.e possibly some sort of script that emulates the linux sendmail? Note: I don't have access to the windows server config, it is a shared hosting account.

As I was on windows and hated my hosts spam protection (took almost 3 hours for the spam filter to confirm safety of emails from gmail servers) I moved the email system to an external company, that now manages my pop3/smtp etc. (not sure if this makes any difference - but may as well explain it just incase)

Relay Via Sendmail

Mar 31, 2008

I have found a bunch of articles to setup Sendmail as a mail relay, but none have been successful for me or the articles are very outdated. Anyone have a 'stupid-proof' set of current instructions on how setup Sendmail Pop before SMTP? This is a CentOS 4.5 Box with Sendmail 8.14.2/8.13.1 and Dovecot. Any successful guidance would be appreciated!

Configuring Sendmail

how to which will help me to make a correct configuration of mail server. I want to set up a mail server with e.g three domain names and all three domain names will have few similar email addresses like info, sales, marketing and so on. I know that this can be done by using control panels but I am not big fan of control panels I want to do a pure Linux administration using the command line.

Sendmail Tightening

Mar 19, 2009

I haven't used Sendmail in a while and would like to clarify a specific setup.

Suppose we have a box hosting a handful of clients, thus it is a Shared setup.
Suppose we have Sendmail sendmail-8.13.1-3.3.el4 on a CentOS 4.7 Final installed with 0 extra configuration other than the default one.

Such setup allows on to relay via the localhost method through php/cgi scripts or even manually through sendmail binary.

Ideal setup would be one where I would have the ability to specify into a file, the usernames allowed to relay email. E.g

if /etc/passwd contains

user1
user2
user3
user3
baduser
user6
spaminguser

than ideally I'd like to pick 'baduser' + 'spaminguser' and disallow them the ability to relay through the localhost.

I should not know anything about their domains or where they are sending.

A general directory setup might be

/home/user1/domain1.com
/home/user1/domain2.com
/home/user1/domain3.com
/home/user2/domain.com
/home/user2/sub.domain.com

etc.

Thus, the server has 0 more than a barebones installation of Sendmail with the following configuration
----------------------------------------------

Sendmail Redirect

Jun 16, 2008

A spammer has sent a ton of users a phishing email requesting the users password...

I work for a regional ISP, and we deal with alot of elderly people who would probably send him a response with a password... I looked over the mail log and one person did respond back to him...

Basically... I want to do like... a virtusertable entry that forwards any email sent to HIM... to ME...

so basically... his email is for instance: phishingspammer@gmail.com

I want to do something like this in the virtusertable (I understand it probably cannot be done thru the virtusertable):

phishingspammer@gmail.com goodguy@regionalisp.com

This way I can alert the people who DO try to send him emails that the email was stopped and to never respond with a password.
