Review Tektonic, VPSland, Joesdatacenter & Godaddy
Mar 24, 2009
Tektonic.net - This is a great host. They have excellent service and awesome uptime. The speeds are fast and you never need to worry. Also very cheap. They've only gone down once for me, and that was due to a DDoS attack. Domain: txitcs.com
VPSLand.com - Another good host. Excellent service, good uptime, very fast speeds, and very cheap. They were a little bit of a pain when I first registered with them, saying that it _could_ take 24-48 hours to create the VPS (which I know is BS) but it was done within a couple of hours so I didn't complain too much. Best bet for a good, cheap windows VPS host. IP Address: 65.75.252.33
joesdatacenter.com - Great webhost. Very awesome prices on dedicated servers. He doesn't have live chat, but he usually responds to emails within 10-15 minutes. Servers are fast, and so is the speed. Domain: thetestingdomain.com
godaddy.com - Overall they're not a bad web host. Customer service is definitely pretty good. Server speeds are a little slow at times. IP Address: 97.74.65.198

I've been with Tektonic now for 7 months - and they have to be the best VPS provider
I've used for higher end un-managed VPS'es.
Their support is very quick, and if I need quick questions answering, I know I can nip onto their live help pretty much any time of the day... I've never had a time where live help hasn't been available.

As I'm leaving TekTonic after having service with them for over a year (almost a year and a half), I figured I'd post a detailed review about that time spent with them.
At the beginning of last year, I decided that I wanted to move to a VPS instead of the shared reseller hosting I had with Dathorn at the time (had been with them for 4 years... excellent service by the way) as I wanted to try out some stuff that Dathorn didn't offer (e.g. Ruby on Rails, plus run a small Ventrilo server).
So, I began looking around and found TekTonic. Wasn't a big fan of the idea of unmetered bandwidth, but after inquiring about when they would begin to offer metered plans, I decided I would sign up for their "UM2" plan. When they did finally begin to offer the metered plans, I asked their support about switching my account over to a "LINUX-2" plan (basically equivalent to the "UM2" but metered instead of unmetered), they informed me that in order to switch, I would have to make a new account, order a metered plan, and then close my old unmetered plan account... not exactly my definition of "easy" as when I had initially asked about it on their forums, but not too big of a deal in the end.
Anyway, my new metered plan account went live on May 16, 2007.
Setup time was very quick for both the initial unmetered account and the new metered account. However, not even a few hours after receiving the "welcome" email for the metered account, I had to submit a ticket as my VPS became completely inaccessible. The support team responded 4 hours later and had to issue my VPS a new IP. Problem solved.
VPS plans with TekTonic come with the HPSComplete control panel, which offers a lot of functionality. I was pretty satisfied, even though I knew I wasn't going to touch the control panel much, as this was also partly an educational process for me (teaching myself how to set up a Linux server... I wanted to do mostly everything from scratch).
One feature I did know I was going to use was the "Server-Side Backing up and Restoring" feature in HSPC. If I screwed something up as part of the learning process, I could just restore a previous snapshot. Nice and easy.
So as the months went on, I had set up e-mail, DNS, HTTP, MySQL, PHP, Ruby, the free version of Ventrilo server, etc.
Around September or so, a couple friends who used the Ventrilo server had been complaining that quite often, it was unusable due to lag. Sometimes it would even completely die and they would be unable to reconnect. I was also getting a few people telling me that they had been unable to send me e-mails (only 1 or 2, but even still....). This wasn't a constant thing however... it would come and go, but usually once every 1-2 days anyway. I probably wouldn't have really noticed if it hadn't been for the Ventrilo server which people would use for some prolonged periods of time.
Anyway this continued on for quite a while, until I finally decided that this was getting ridiculous, and that I would ask support about it. The response was basically that they had suffered a DDoS attack recently... well that must have been a pretty long DDoS attack... anyway, the problem did seem to go away until a little while after the new year (2008). Same deal again, slow network speeds and occasionally completely losing connections. After a little more thorough investigation, it seemed I was getting about a 30% packet loss. Asked support again about it, and same deal yet again... DDoS attack.
In both cases however, I had to give credit to their support team, as tickets were answered very quickly, and the resolutions they implemented were done pretty quickly.
Not impressed that the problems happened in the first place... but well, **** happens I guess.
No other issues until April 26, 2008, when I receive an e-mail in my inbox detailing this little problem. This was basically "the end" for me. Not because their hardware crashed (as I said in the preceding paragraph... **** happens), but because of how it was handled on the support team end, and how it opened my eyes to the fact that the server-side backup feature in HSPC is not really that safe (though I was never told this, and there is no warning of any kind).
How was it handled by the support team and why would I have an issue with it? Well let's analyze the aftermath from my end:
I had been following the thread on the TekTonic forums where Matt was posting updates as they worked on the issue, and the day after he had posted a message saying that the VPS's on the server were starting back up, I noticed that mine had still not started back up. I figured that given that there was a serious issue with hardware crashing that they probably should have contacted everyone who's VPS was not booting back up. Guess they didn't agree. Anyway, I contacted support, and was told that some of the data in my VPS was corrupt. Specifically, the error my VPS was throwing was "Error: Unable to execute bash: No such file or directory. Container is unmounted. Container start failed". I was given the option to either merge an OS template into my VPS so it would boot, or just copy all the uncorrupted files from my VPS to a /old directory on a few OS template install. I chose the /old option. The following day, the reinstall and copy to /old was done, I looked at what files I was left with, and to my dismay, found an empty directory.
I will take this opportunity that at this point I realize this is my own fault for losing my data in the end, as I was not taking regular backups... in fact the only backups I had been taking were with the aforementioned server-side backup feature in HSPC.
However, I couldn't even login to HSPC as there was something wrong with my account yet again and had to contact support to fix the problem. Luckily it only took an hour. When it was finally fixed I started to feel in a much better mood when I looked in HSPC and still saw my last server-side backup still listed! Went to restore it, and nothing happened... no error message, nothing.
So... I sent in a support ticket! The response: .....

I've seen nothing but bad reviews for VPSLand ever since I've been here. There have been the occasional good reviews, but those are usually posted by people with poor grammar and spelling and with less than 10 posts. So I got curious, and wondered if VPSLand really is as bad as everyone is saying.
Needless to say, I decided to try them out. They were running a 50% off the first month special which was perfect since I wouldn't be losing too much money in case anything bad happened. I chose the smallest Windows 2003 Virtuozo plan which came out to be $9 for the first month.
VPS was setup within 7 hours of payment. After tinkering around with my VPS, I decided I wanted to switch to 32bit (I was on 64 bit). I sent in a ticket asking for them to switch my OS. They said it was possible and proceeded to do it. After a day, I reminded them about it and within 2 hours they switched the OS.
I've sent in various support and billing tickets for different things and every time it's been resolved within 12 hours. My VPS has been up every time I have checked, but I haven't been monitoring it 24/7. However, every time I've needed it, it's been there. The speeds are pretty decent as well, I've only noticed lag a couple times within the 3 weeks I've been with them so far.
Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with VPSLand. I don't use their support as much since I prefer to learn everything myself so I just use Google to search for what I need and then I do it. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones, but for the price I'm paying ($18 a month for a 512MB Windows Server 2003 VPS) I'd say it's definitely worth it.

I have been using these guys for about 5 months now. I've never had a network problem with any of my VPS systems I have had with them. Uptime for me has been 100% without any issues.
Technical Support:
Technical Support was A+. Every little problem I had that google couldn't explain right, was solve by their tech support by time I checked my ticket. Not once did they give me a problem or a run around about a problem I had. They fixed it without delays.
Ticket System:
Send a support ticket, expect to get an answer very soon. All my tickets were answered in a timely fashion. Some in just 2-3mins, Talk about quick service.
System Resources:
As everyone knows, a VPS is shared between a dedicated server, and sometimes your VPS will be slowed/dragged depending on the amount of VPS networks setup on a system. My system has 1.5gb ram and I dont even know about the CPU process I have available. I have had no kind of system lag. I almost feel like my VPS is an actual dedicated server sometimes haha.
Long story short, I rate VPSLAND.com a 10/10

VPSLand has some pretty slick prices. In spite of all the bad stuff said about them I decided to give them a try. I purchased their Windows-EZ Starter Value plan which uses Virtuozzo.
Setup:
- Not too bad, not great. Took a little while.
- Their management panels are in multiple places - not just one centralized dashboard from whence to access all other areas.
General:
- They don't automatically run backups, I had to run the backup myself.
- They didn't tell me not to apply Windows updates so I hosed my slice almost
immediately.
- Apparently my slice was rebooted without me knowing it b/c I had IIS set to manual and when I woke up one day it had stopped. I set it to automatic to avoid this.
- I had all sorts of install and permission issues with SQL Server 2005/08 Express, eventually gave up.
Support:
- Support is generally slow. Takes several hours for a response even if issue is emergency.
I'm not sure how many of these issues are Virtuozzo related and how many are VPSLand. I know I don't like Virtuozzo (call me old school, I want to apply my own patches), so I decided to purchase one of their Xen VPS. I purchased the WindowsXL-1024. Here's my thoughts on that experience thus far:
Setup:
- Took a long time.
General:
- Installed Windows Updates and suddenly couldn't get out to the internet (though I could still RDC in).
- Submitted trouble ticket and they fixed it but didn't tell me how.
- They told me not to apply Windows Updates - wait, I thought thats why I just got a Xen VPS? Waiting for their response.
Support:
- Several hour response time.
Well, its only been a day or so on the Xen VPS, I'll let you know how things go.

I used VPSland.com for the past 2 weeks and of course I enjoyed the first week of their servicc. It seriously got worse. There so called "network" for the server soo slow. They seriously messed up my server box as I was using it to host my databases for a game server. I'm currently using the "Starter" package and of course will not be using anything of theirs for long. The RDP (Remote Desktop) is horrible. Their network is terrible goes down all the time for me. I didn't worry about the network as far as i cared but they did something so stupid. I asked them for a password change, 6 hours later they reply, it works, then my box goes dead. Then I ask them why. They answer "There seems to be network problems with your box." I was like alright, they fix, then done. I login into my customer panel & RDP. NOTHING NO FILES, NO DATABASES OF MINE LEFT. Everything gone. I open a support ticket, they say they don't delete anything but after they changed my password, they totally screwed over my box. I ask them why the hell they removed all my important files. They answer "Sorry your box has many corrupted components, we recommend an re-installation. Please make a backup. When you are ready please reply" I'm like WTF? Where the hell are my files to even start with, how the hell do I make a backup. They answer "Thank your box has successfully been re-installed" yet now I still wait for there lame support (6hours after replies).
They messed up all my files, and important databases. I really want an explanation of what happened but they seem to ignore me. Hopefully my service/business project I have worked so hard on, so have other players to my gameserver will be restored. And yes I'm very angry, hope all your servers die & customers leave.
Also may anyone recommend me with a better VPS service? I need a cheap VPS which offers about 512MB-1GB of RAM guaranteed from a price of $10-$45.

In short: stay away.
The long version:
We ordered VPSLAND.com a week ago. The setup was fast, the config was smooth, prices are great (1Gb RAM server for 30 bucks a month, 50% discount for the first month - wow!). We moved our website (nothing special, 15 pages + SQL-Express database)
But then ((
I got up in the morning and saw an alert from "siteuptime.com" that our website is down for 4 hours... I pinged - timeout. Interesting - the web panel said that the server is fine and running... I rebooted the server and opened a support ticket, and after 8 hours the answer was "we had a hardware problem on the host server resolved now".
In the next few days I got another morning alert. Guess what. The site is down for 8 HOURS. God knows haw many clients we've lost... Again - the server is showing up as "running" in the webpanel, but it is totally unreachable. The support ticket answer was "we've updated the Virtuozzo version and restarted the host, it should work fine now"
...ok... I started to look for alternatives. Found "kickassvps" (recommended here) and asked them a couple of presales questions. And while I was waiting for a response - the server was down a couple of times again... Even now, after I transferred my website (runs fine BTW) I want to login to VPSLAND server (to remove my databases and do some cleanup) and guess what? It is f####ng down! )

I was looking for a windows vps for a few days and I've found vpsland through WHT but I saw some bad reviews about it but I took the chance any way as all what I had to pay is 9.5$ only for a Lite Windows VPS which is a gerat deal really!
Any way I submitted my order in Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 12:08 PM
I received my account information in Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 3:58 PM
I was really impressed with the fast setup of the VPS I thought it would take like 24-48 hours to setup it but it didn't even take 5 hours!
I logged in using the info to the RDP and I was happy with the speed I'm getting for 256Mb of RAM
I tried downloading and uploading two large files as a test for the connection speed and I got a very good speed really .
I sent an e-mail to the support asking about if Plesk is included with my account but I didn't notice in the package that it isn't
any way I sent the e-mail in Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 6:55 PM
and received the reply in Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 7:26 PM
I would like to thank vpsland for the good service and I hope your service stay always like that
I would be more than happy to provide my domain name hosted with vpsland to any of the admins for verification

I've been hosting a site on vpsland.com for a month now and so far their service has been excellent.
I used to host with a shared hosting provider but my site got too large and too slow so I moved over to VPSLAND and everything has been excellent since.
I had a few issues at first setting up the site however I raised a few support tickets and they told me what I needed to do to continue. They even offered to help configure my site if I supplied them with the appropriate username/password for the server.
I've got a Linux EZ Bronze package that comes with double the RAM (128Mb*2) which costs $15 per month. I looked around for a while to get a VPS and this seems competitive to me.
So far I've had no downtime on my site and web response is fast.

I'm starting with GoDaddy since I've been with them the longest. I left AOL and created my first site in 2000. I went with another host first. They were reliable, but they didn't provide me enough space, so I went with GoDaddy. I thought their first superbowl commercial was hilarious and decided to give them a try in 2005. Their monthly rate was very close to the $2.95 I had been paying for my previous host. I think paying by the year, it averaged about $3.29 a month. Godaddy offered a huge amount of space and bandwidth for that, and I got more email accounts than I would ever use as well.
The best thing I can say about this host is that I have NEVER noticed any downtime with them. I visit my site at least once a day, and it was always up. That is the most important aspect of a host for me, and everyone brags about 99.9% uptime. I can now tell you from experience that not all hosts are being truthful about that percentage, but Godaddy is.
The next thing that is almost as important as uptime is how economical they are. I have quite a few domains with free hosts, which are good for sites that you don't maintain that much and have little traffic. I'm not made of money, and I make very little from my websites, so I can't afford more than a few dollars a month in hosting. Godaddy was the cheapest out there in 2005. Not only cheap but reliable. I can't stress how important those two aspects are, or how hard it is to find both those.
Now the few negatives, and the reasons I left godaddy in the spring of 2008 (which was also one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made online). You get 100 email accounts with hosting with a max of 100 MB total for those accounts. So you can either have 100 accounts with 1 MB email storage or 10 accounts with 10 MB storage, but there was no way to change that max of 10 MB per account. I didn't like that at all, especially with all the free email accounts out there with 1 GB storage. I was paying for hosting and only getting 10 MB for my main email account? I ended up creating a yahoo account that I used more often for the storage. Well, goaddy has now fixed that issue, so we can put all 100 MB to one account if we want to. It's still too low of an amount, but I can live with it.
I know enough about how the web works to get myself into trouble, but when I set up my first ftp account with godaddy, I had no idea that it would become part of my root path. So anytime there was an error on my forum, my ftp account name would be shown to all my users. I chose my own name when I created it and didn't like that aspect at all. I emailed godaddy, since I couldn't change the username in my control panel. They responded that it was impossible to change it. I told them that I might have to leave them if I couldn't, which I did end up doing. This was probably the main reason I left and it would still bother me that I couldn't change it. I'm now back with them and was able to create a new username that was more suitable. I don't know if they still don't allow you to change your ftp account, but that's a moot point for me now.
Lastly, I had been doing a cron job for backing up my forum database. Godaddy did some upgrade of their software, and it conflicted with my jobs. It would no longer run, so I complained to support. They blamed me for it somehow and didn't seem willing to fix the problem. I researched and everything pointed toward Godaddy not upgrading properly, but I couldn't convince them of this. Well, it turns out that all my subsequent hosts have one problem or another with doing cron job backups, so it was pointless to leave one host for another for this reason. I don't even do the cron jobs anymore, since it wasn't worth the frustration. And what good are they if you don't download them frequently, and your current host suspends you for no good reason? Of course, that is why I have returned to godaddy, but that's a different review.
Unfortunately, since I left godaddy last year, I lost the special price I was getting. They are a bit more now, but paying for 2 years brings the average price down to $4.50 a month (they get cheaper the more years you pay for at once). $4.50 a month is still lower than most of the hosts out there, and I know I can rely on godaddy for uptime. Again, uptime and price are the most important to me. Yes, they have their faults, but believe me when I tell you, NO host is perfect. You just have to weed through the unprofessional and/or bad ones to find the best choice. Oh, and the third most important thing about a host is that you can trust them. Reliability is very important. You want to know that your account is safe with these people. That they won't suspend without good reason or treat you like you don't matter. We are the customers after all. They wouldn't be needed if not for us, but a few hosts seem to forget that fact. So far godaddy has proven they can be trusted.

My domain name and my web hosting package that I had with GoDaddy came up for renewal on Friday (two days ago), and my intention was to transition to a new domain registrar and web host. The new web host that I chose to go with is HawkHost, but they are not the subject of this particular review. Rather, GoDaddy, the web host that I am leaving, is.
I will save my comments for HawkHost for a separate review dedicated to my experiences with them.
I had not really intended on writing a review for GoDaddy, but my experience with their tech support, tonight, prompted me to write a brief review.
As I sit here at my computer late into the wee morning hours of Sunday morning, right now, I find that there's a lot of irony, when it comes to obtaining or departing web hosts.
Off the top of my head, I don't know exactly how long that I have had this particular web host account with GoDaddy. It's been at least two full years or more, I know. I have statements handy in front of me for the last years, so it's been at least two full years. One statement is dated August of 2007.
Anyway, during my time with GoDaddy as a webhost, I have not really experienced a lot of downtime. There may have been some, but I never really tracked it closely, and the site was pretty much up and running and accessible over that entire period of time, whenever I would try to load it in my web browser.
During that time, I've never had to deal with any rude tech support from GoDaddy. At times, tech support at GoDaddy was more helpful than at other times, but I didn't really need to call them a whole lot during that time frame of 2+ years.
Even though I am leaving GoDaddy as a webhost, my experience with some tech support guy named Austin that was the last person that I spoke to earlier this morning ended with me choosing to extend my web hosting for another month for $4.99. I post this simply to illustrate how good tech support can benefit a web hosting company, even when a paying customer of some time is already in the process of switching paid web hosting to another web hosting company - switching to the competition, so to speak.
So, why am I switching web hosts, if I have numerous positive things that I can honestly and sincerely convey about GoDaddy as a webhost unto those who read the forums here on WebHostingTalk?
Being on a slow dial-up Internet connection (24K to 26.4K, on average), GoDaddy's webhost control panel is the equivalent of Internet Hell. I hate it. I despise it. I absolutely and positively abhor it with a passion that knows no end. I, with my slow dial-up Internet connection, have endured this burden of incalculable magnitude for 2+ years, and I have simply had enough. This is an example of how otherwise good and reliable web hosting service and tech support is undermined by interface issues. It's not an issue, if I am at my sister's place, where she has a DSL Internet connection.
But, it is a very real issue to me at home on my slow dial-up Internet connection. I have dealt with numerous web hosts' respective web host control panels over the last several years, and no other web host that I have interacted with, where their control panels are concerned, come anywhere even remotely close to the abyss of despair that trying to do even simple tasks are in GoDaddy's control panel. 'O, woe is me, when I have to use their control panel, at all.
That said and highlighted, I would like to take a moment out to give GoDaddy two big thumbs up for not rushing to delete all of my site's files, the moment that my web hosting with them expired. If GoDaddy had deleted them, already, then I would not have extended my web hosting with them for another month, here two days later. This, I think, illustrates well how GoDaddy did not slice its own throat by extending the courtesy to myself, a paying customer that was departing for a new web host, by being in a rush to delete the customer's files. Granted, it's not something that GoDaddy had to do, but likewise, neither did I have to extend my web hosting for another month. This type of business approach on GoDaddy's part is conducive to reducing problems, and ultimately yields a more positive image of the company, compared to numerous web hosting horror stories that I have read about in web hosting forums over the years.
I did, however, choose to renew my domain name registration with GoDaddy two days ago, just to ensure that my domain name would not lapse. I've been through that headache, before, and it didn't really matter to me who my domain name was registered with. This aspect was a non-issue.
So, in conclusion, my overall experience with GoDaddy as a web host was positive, but their control panel was - and has always been - a very glaring negative for me. If you have broadband Internet access, their control panel likely won't even be an issue for you. If you have a slow dial-up connection like me, however, then I would not recommend going with GoDaddy as a web host, although I think that if you do, anyway, then you will be likely to enjoy a reliable degree of site uptime, overall - if my own first-hand experience over the past 2+ years is any indication.

i would like to share my review on godaddy webhosting. i have a few domains at godaddy, so i decided to try out the webhosting.
i used godaddy unlimited hosting plan for three months and i can tell you this, stay away from godaddy webhosting. not that much downtime but the pages load so slow!
sometime it will not even load, horrible support on these issues. godaddy support dont know how to respond back and place you on hold until they speak to someone else.
godaddy hosting sucks but there domain registration is ok.
im currently trying namecheap, hostgator.com, and dotstrar.com hosting. as i have domains at each of those places.
hopefully there hosting is not like godaddy.com

While I can’t really comment on the quality of SSL cert that GoDaddy provides, I can attest to the fact that GoDaddy does provide cheap, easy to install, SSL certs. All the SSL certs that I have are provided by GoDaddy and I do plan to continue doing so unless I find out that their SSL certs aren’t comparable to other SSL certs with the same protection e.g. 128 bit encryption.
The bottom line is, if you want a cheap, fairly simple SSL choice, then you may find GoDaddy to be a solid choice.

After trying out GoDaddy shared web hosting for 2 months now, I am confident to give you a good review.
Purpose
I got Web Hosting from GoDaddy in order to get ASP.NET. I looked at other hosts but they are just more expensive. So I decided to go with GoDaddy since they provide quite a lot of storage space, bandwidth and of course ASP, ASP.NET 1, and 2, IIS 7 and quite cheap as well. Since HostGator didn't have that option, I didn't have any other choice.
Server Speed & Uptime
I monitor my website using SiteUptime, and there have been 0 downtimes in two months. Not sure how closely SiteUptime monitors a website, but that's what the stats read.
Server speed is very good. For example file upload/download speed is good and doesn't lag.
Scripting Support
Since I chose Windows Hosting, it comes with ASP.NET support, and the ability to create Virtual Directories via the mini web based IIS Manager.
I was actually surprised to see this but they also have PHP 5 . On their windows web hosting package they don't advertise PHP, but after testing a simple file I was just surprised and happy .
Data Base
They give you MS SQL Databases, Access and MySQL. What I really like in their database management area is, it gives you examples of different connectionstrings for your database.
Support
It usually takes 2-3 hours to process each ticket. The support representatives are kind and really helpful.
In a nutshell, GoDaddy really surprised me with their web hosting features, support and just wow .

Tektonic: Support Go Above giving my VPS a quick once-over to check for rootkits, and then pointing me to the place of infection.
If anyone's looking for a VPS, I'd definately recommend Tektonic for their prompt support, and willingness to go out of their way to help. It was well out of the scope of the support package that I have with them. Thanks Rocky, and thanks Tektonic!

I have a few questions about tektonic, I talked to their costumer service but maybe you guys out of experience can tell me a bit more.
Also if anyone knows of a XEM server that is located near Atlanta, that provides the same as TekTonic I would appreciate the info. and if anyone has one of those lifetime promo codes, that would be apprecialoved.
ok I plan to get 2 VPS from tektonic ( this is my top choice so far ) I want to have one 100% dedicated on the intranet for MYSQL, the other for apache and all the other stuff you know.
I also Need cpanel to move things around, so I need that one ( however someone told me I can buy a cpanel license separately )
ok I am going for the 294MB one for the Mysql and the 1178MB one for the apache and all that.
they say that they warantee the CPU 2.6GHZ on the 294MB one and 7.x GHZ on the 1178MB one, is this for real they really guarantee this CPU, or that's what you can burst.
the costumer service guy told me that CPU is guaranteed, and you can't burst, however they work on virtuosso and all virtuosso VPS I have worked do allow bursts, I would like to know from experience how fast are those servers processing, I mean for real.
because if I get 300MHZ of CPU and I can burst to 2.6GHZ, that would suck because I already have CPU intensive apps on my other VPS, and I plan to move.

I have been a happy customer of Tektonic for 2 years now. If you search my posts on WHT you will see that I have recommended them many times. That's all different now.
I use my VPS just for my personal email and a few *very* low traffic web sites that get only a few dozen hits a day at most. I am very experienced with Linux, and I know that for a barely used server w/o any control panel you really don't need much hardware: I have a 128MB plan and usually my memory usage was around 50-60MB. I never had any alerts in Virtuozzo about resources, and I was happy.
Earlier this week Tektonic sent me an email saying that my VPS would be migrated to a new server, and this would switch my virtualization method from Virtuozzo to OpenVZ. I have had OpenVZ VPSs before, and was not happy with their performance for small systems such as mine (which is one of the reasons I chose Tektonic). A few hours later my migration was complete and then the problems started.
My webmail kept giving me IMAP server errors. I logged in with SSH and couldn't even execute a single command because my VPS had reached its maximum process limit. I rebooted via the HyperVM control panel, and logged in again. My /proc/user_beancounters file lists the maximum number of processes as 50, which obviously isn't enough. So I disabled my Apache and MySQL servers, and now I can only use the VPS for email by logging in and using Pine.
I sent an email to support. In the past their support has responded within an hour, maybe 2. But this response took maybe 8 hours or more. They responded that I am trying to do too much with my plan, and I needed an upgrade...even though I have been using the same plan for 2 years with no problems! The problem is not me trying to do too much, it is them imposing artificial limits on my number of processes.
I replied and said I wanted to be moved back to a Virtuozzo server, since I never had any problems with it in 2 years, plus I NEVER ASKED TO BE MOVED TO OPENVZ ANYWAYS! It's been 36 hours since that email to support, and there has been no response. I sent a follow up about 18 hours ago, and no response to that either.
Sad to say that I will probably be leaving Tektonic. I have always had good things to say about them, but right now my VPS is practically unusable and they really don't seem to care one bit.

I feel like i made the mistake of signing up for a VPS host way too quickly and without good judgement.
I took the plunge and signed up for westhosts Summertime special deal which gave me this: $16.95 (x12 months) -free domain name - 25gig, 500gig transfer, pls all the goodies you can expect from a good plan but not. westhost.com/package-compare.html
They use a special control panel custom made as you may know called Site Manager. Its sorta limited really to install software they tailored for you.
The "root like access" is pure crap. but then again what would you expect? you can even run the top command.
It would have been better to go with shared with shell access!
I wont go deep into the issue; you can find my post on their forums:: forums.westhost.com/showthread.php?p=36727
What i want to know about today is this:
I found a company called TekTonic.net and they seem to have some good prices.
What i am confused about however is their UM1 (unmetered) vs their Linux-1 (Unmanaged) plans.
for example; in the Unmetered UM1 plan it says: 1.0 Mbit Unmetered (equiv. 320GB)
while for Unmanaged Linux-1 it says: Transfer Fully Burstable to 100Mbit
My question here is: for UM1. Is it really unmeterd and if so why does it say equiv to 320gb? .. then what does the "Transfer Fully Burstable to 100Mbit" mean?
also, what OS choice should i go with if i pick these guys? CentOS or Debian, Ubuntu? I know Ubuntu IS debian with crandy on top.
My budget isnt really high. I am trying not to go beyond $25 to a max of $28 per month).. and yes i do have my own domain!

Because my current VPS is so crappy, I'm considering changing to a new VPS and move my sites there. My sites are pretty low traffic, but they're in PHP and my MySQL DB is around 30 MB I think. I have two candidates:
www.turbovps.com (Unmetered or unmanaged $15 plan)
www.tektonic.com ($15.99 plan)

Does anyone have input on either of these VPS hosts? Their plans are similar and prices are nearly identical, and I'm trying to figure out whether I should just flip a coin, or whether one edges the other out.

Would just like to recommend vpsland[dot]com for your VPS Hosting. I ordered my VPS through there very High Tech looking billing system that has a seemless link to their Virtuozzo VPS's as they are both made by Paralells. It then took under 24 hours for my VPS to be setup. I have found no problems with the VPS, the company even assisted with the installing of IonCube Loader for my PHP.
The support is brilliant, LiveSupport is offered and so is ticket support. The support response is very fast and you can reply by email no need to login to a portal or anything. Its so simple to use. They use Kayako for their support, its very reliable and works smoothly.
I have also had completely no downtime caused by VPSLAND and their systems, they have been veyr reliable and I would recommend them to anybody look for a cheap VPS. They also currently have an offer on Doubel Memory on many VPS's aswell as 50% off the first month. THe prices are exptremly competetive.
They are the ideal company if you are either very experienced or if you have no experience of servers at all.
