Difference Between RAM And Burstable RAM?
What is the difference between RAM and burstable RAM? What even is RAM! I ask because I upgraded my server (again) today. I went from 256 RAM, to 512, now to 1024 of RAM. Is 1 gig of RAM good? Also, I want to know in general if I am getting a good deal here I have a VPS now with these specs: Dedicated RAM: 1024 MB Burstable RAM: 4096 MB RAID 10 Disk Space: 100 GB FREE Backup Space: 100 GB Premium Bandwidth: 4000 GB Dedicated IP Address: 2 Monthly Price: $119.99 does that seem like a good deal to you? I ask because I am new to all of this, and don't know if I am getting jipped. Should a site on this server run fast, if it is a high traffic "tube" site?

RAM Guaranteed/burstable, Discspace
I currently have the SilverVS package from RoseHosting: [url] With this specification, I also have DirectAdmin running and my website is www.christianforumsite.com (A forum) So far, It's really good but there are some hourly lag times and two very very short downtimes in a few months time span. RH told me that my site had a high memory usage and that I might have to upgrade it. So my questions are: 1. Could forums take a lot of memory and force the OS to kill some processes. In my case the forum is active but it not like huge community. Traffic report on alexa: [url] It appears on top if you search for christian forum or christian forums, so the bots might be doing some damage too. Also I am using DirectAdmin with the lowest plan. 2. Could upgrading to the next VPS plan make the site noticeably faster and eliminate the lag times I've been experiencing? 3. What specifically (RAM guaranteed/burstable, discspace) should be high in case of a growing forum. Any other recommendation?

"Burstable" RAM In VPSs
Most VPS offerings have "burstable" memory allocations. I get how you can do this with most things -- letting a VPS access more CPU cycles can be done pretty easily, and a 10 Mbps line burstable to 100 Mbps makes sense. But how does the guest OS handle all of a sudden having more memory? Since a lot of VPS guests run without modification, how does this work? Does the typical Linux system support dynamic changes in RAM? I can only imagine that dealing with "un-bursting" is even more complex: suppose I have 128MB, burst to 512, but then the host node tries to reclaim some of it. Is the system smart enough to seamlessly swap out to disk when RAM "disappears?" I'd fully expect a kernel panic when the system's RAM shrinks in size, particularly when the RAM was in use. I'm curious about exactly how all of this is managed. Given that 95% of VPS hosts give a burstable range of RAM, what exactly manages this? Is the virtualization platform handling this and somehow "tricking" the kernel, or is the guest system able to deal with changing RAM allocations? And, if the latter, is this a standard feature of the Linux kernel, or are guest OS mods still necessary to deal with burstable RAM?

Burstable Billing
I'm really confused about burstable billing. I'm hoping you guys can help me out. I'm currently with Softlayer and I have two dedicated servers with 2TB of bandwidth a month. So far this has been fine for me. I'm getting ready to move to a third server and therefore I'm looking at colo space. The problem is that they all seem to charge by the Mbps instead of by the overall bandwidth you use. The bandwidth here in Austin is expensive (About $200+ per Mbps) and I have no idea how much I'd need. Here's a sample of the last 7 days of traffic on one of my servers Any idea how much bandwidth I'd need? Also, are these colos just screwing with me? Should I be able to find a plan that charges me by overall bandwidth instead of using bustable billing?

if a provider provides me a 1Mbps AIMS dedicated line for my dedicated server, is it possible for him to make it burstable to 1.5Mbps? i thought when i get a dedicated line i would be able to get max 1Mbps only? How is it possible that it can be burstable? Does that mean its not dedicated, instead shared?

OpenVZ Burstable Memory
Let say your VPS has 128MB of memory. My understanding would be that if you had, say, another 128MB of 'burstable' memory, that if another guest on the system wasn't using all it's memory, or if there was some spare on the system, then your VPS could use that. But, how much memory does your VPS really think it has available? and what happens if the other VPS (or the system) decides it wants it memory back? Does OpenVZ just start killing off your processes until it free's up enough memory?

Burstable To A 100mbits Full Duplex
I wonder what does this mean. I no what a 100mbit connectivity is but what does it mean by burstable. Does it mean that the downloading will start off really fast and then go down to my normal internet connection. What i mean is that if i download say from the microsoft.com, It will start at about 400kb/sec and then slowely progress to 260kb/sec. With my server with in a datacenter, it starts from about 100kb/sec and then makes it way up to 260kb/sec. I am moving datacenter. So what does it mean by burstable.

CPanel/WHM Managed VPS With At Least 512MB Burstable
I'm currently in the market for a new VPS that will be used for a single website. The client had it on a shared server, and ended up having it get suspended from too many httpd connections one day. Though the 2+ months it's been up, there haven't been any prior issues, so I think there was just something on that day that people found the website. Anyway, according to WHM's bandwidth log, it hasn't used more then 46GB in a month, so I don't foresee this account needing to surpass 100GB of bandwidth. The amount if disk space being used it currently at 1GB but up to 3-5GB would suffice. I've tried out Direct Admin, but I'm much more knowledgable with WHM and cPanel that if at all possible, I'd want that on it. I'd prefer not to have to pay extra monthly for a license; I'd like for it to be included in the price. I'm not looking for full management, but just basic management (and having support that actually reads your tickets as opposed to repeating the same bs every other ticket.. speaking from personal experience with another *cough* VPS host.) I'm looking for the price range to be under $30 a month for the specs needed. I realize cPanel needs a bit more memory, so.. hopefully this is justifiable: Requirements: OS - CentOS CP - cPanel+WHM RAM - 128-256MB dedicated, burstable to 512MB+ (though not a necessity) DISK - 3-5GB of disk space (obviously more would be fine if it's available within PR) Bandwidth - 100GB Price Range - $30 or less I've already tried out Primary VPS, so I don't want to go there. Spry's VPS is unmanaged, and I don't want to configure the VPS myself at all (I'm lazy and I really suck at SSH commands.) If any of you guys can offer some ideas of VPS hosts to look into, that would fit the prereqs I listed, I would be forever in your debt (or not) but I'd really appreciate it. I just don't want to deal with Primary VPS anymore, and have been stumped as to what other VPS hosts to look into. Shared Hosting RAM Vs Virtual Private Server (VPS) RAM
I have a reseller shared hosting plan that allows for 50 sub-accounts and I'm using about 20. I am looking at getting a VPS with between 256 - 394 mb RAM and am wondering if I were to move all of my accounts to the new VPS would I be ending up with less RAM to use for all of my sites. To put this another way how do most reseller plans manage RAM usage? Do each of my sub-accounts have access to say 64 mb RAM so that if I were to use all 50 sub accounts I would have access to 50*64 mb. From what I've experienced and read with shared hosting my thought is I could end up with less access to server resources, CPU and RAM, with a VPS plan - though with VPS the resources are more guaranteed rather than being dependent on the usage of other accounts on the server. The reason I am looking at a VPS account is that I have a site that will likely have 1000s of users with a server intensive script (Moodle) and I know it would violate the reseller account agreement. So maybe my plan should be to keep the reseller account and use it for my database driven sites and use the VPS for the server intensive site and my html based sites. Also, my VPS choice seems to be narrowed down to Liquidweb, JaguarPC and Zone - has anybody heard of any negative experiences with Liquidweb? I can't find any.

I have a question because I am a bit confused. On one of our servers we needed more RAM. So we ordered RAM from our provider and we paid. After 3-4 hours i get a reply the ram could not be added. (No explanation given) The server can handle 32GB ram and currently has 16GB. We added 8GB more but this is what they said: " The server will not post with anything over 16GB, even though the board supports up to 32GB. The server in question has 4GB of memory. This 4GB of memory has been replaced recently in order to solve this problem, with no avail. RAM For Cheap
I am shopping for servers with 32-64GB of RAM and the typical list price of $10/gbyte is not in line with reality (ie 4GB ECC DDR2 RAM can be bought for 70 bucks). I saw WebNX special offers between 2-300 dollars for 32GB machines, now that's more like it but, I cant really rely on special offers on the long run. As my application will be frontended by a CDN, network quality is somewhat less of an issue. Reliability and price is. So who be good a choice for machines with lots of RAM? Should I Upgrade My Ram
I'm in a vps with 512 MB ram now, my visitors per day is 10K and from top command, i just use about 200 MB. But, my vps is always got downtime everyday about 30 minutes. VPS: What's Using All My RAM
I'm running a vB forum (runemart.com), and my VPS has the following specs: ~666MHz CPU 512MB RAM CentOS 5.3 64-bit DirectAdmin In my VPS control panel, it's saying that I'm using around 350MB to 450MB RAM - this is 24/7, it never goes below 350MB. At the moment all I'm running is a vB forum, that doesn't have many memory consuming plugins (such as no shoutbox at the moment). Is it normal for a vB forum to use so much RAM? Is there any way that I can find out what's using the RAM?

X7DCL-i RAM
I have a X7DCL-i here.. Board works fine with my dual L5410's in it, posts, great. My problem is with the RAM. I have 4 4GB DDR2-667 ECC Registered DIMM's. The box posts with any one stick just fine, and the same with any 2 sticks. Whenever I put all 4 in, or all 4 and the 2 2GB's I have, the box won't post and just beeps. I called SuperMicro, and they blamed it on the revision of the board, and it only works with 2 slots. So the board has 6 slots but you can only use 2?

More RAM Or Better CPU
We currently have a server with the following specs at ThePlanet * Intel Xeon 3060 Dual Core Conroe (2.4Ghz) * 146GB, 10K RPM SCSI/SAS Hard Drive * 2048 MB RAM and have recently started to get a lot of problems with the server. The server is deicated to one website with a vBulletin forum. When we're reaching around 5-600 concurrent users the server starts to slow down and the load skyrockets (100+). Some quick stats from phpMyAdmin (just restarted the SQL server): This MySQL server has been running for 0 days, 0 hours, 7 minutes and 23 seconds. Query statistics: Since its startup, 15,001 queries have been sent to the server. Totalř per hourř per minuteř per second 15 k121.90 k2.03 k33.86 As you can see, the mySQL server is the one thats struggling the most. What should we do at this point... Do we need to go for a better processor and/or just get 4GB RAM?

MySQL = How Much RAM
I'm trying to understand, generally, on a Hybrid VPS with 1gig guaranteed/4gig burst- for small sites that might be installing stuff like Wordpress, a Forum, Joomla!, etc., how many MySQL databases this system can support. I realize traffic would be a major factor but for discussion sake lets assume an average of 50 users for each db with a peak of 100 users. Just trying to get a 'rule of thumb'. Wondering also, how much RAM (resources?) an idle db consumes.

Which CP Has The Least Ram Requierments
VPS after being with wiredtree for less than a week because of weird connection timeouts which only occur to my IP connection. Wiredtree's great and fast support assured me that it was my ISP and my ISP is saying that its not them , so it seems this issue isn't going to be resolved and all this while my site sits there being neglected, so its time to move on. anyway i would like to know which out of the three control panales use up the least ram, because i have my eyes on knownhost and would like to go with a CP that hopefully hogs less ram than Cpanel/WHM. -Webmin -Cpanel/WHM -Plesk -Directadmin so which one uses up the least Ram?

NAS And RAM
We have a NAS server with 2GB of RAM. It gets a TON of disk traffic and it overloaded right now. Would a quick fix be to add more memory? Would that help at all relieve some load from the disks? VPS And Ram
for either VPS or dedicated hosting for a few websites (a mix of Wordpress, Joomla and custom Ruby on Rails). Traffic is likely to be low to medium. I'm confused about memory on VPS. Most of the ones I've seen start at 128MB going up to about 512MB (at prices approaching those of dedicated servers). Now, to me, that all sounds woefully low for a server. If I was getting a dedicated server I'd be looking at a gig at least. Is there something I'm missing? I've seen reference to guaranteed versus burstable memory. I presume burstable means my server can take up to that amount for a short time but only if it happens to be available on the host - no guarantee. Given that traffic to my sites is likely to be bursty should I be paying more attention to the guaranteed or the burstable level of memory? I'll be running Linux, Apache, MySQL BTW.

4 Gb RAM Limit

I’ve been reading several posts about cpanel vs. directadmin and the difference in RAM usage. I understand that cpanel is a resource hog that uses more RAM... so here is my noob question... Ram On A Vps
I'm currently hosting a bunch of small sites on a VPS with serverforce.net with 64mb ram. I'm no longer living in england, and I'm thinking about moving to a provider closer to my new home (Toronto). I've had a look around and I'm thinking about going with future hosting. I'm looking at their unmanaged no control panel vps which would be similar to what I have now. I'm deciding between 2 packages, the silver package with 128mb ram for $14.95/month and the pearl package with 256mb plus an extra 128mb (they have an offer on) for $19.95 a month. My fiance says the extra $5 is a waste because I don't need that much ram, and I think for an extra $5 I might as well have it, everyone always says the more ram the better. (He thinks I should host on his home server with his bog standard DSL connection) I'm planning to run ubuntu 7.04, lighttpd, php5, sqlite (same as I have at the moment). My sites are mostly text, very few images, no video or anything. At the moment I have low traffic, but I'm starting to build web apps which will hopefully bring more traffic and will use more databasey stuff.

How To Check Ram
Let's say I have a VPS with 512 MBs of RAM. How do I check in shell that this is indeed the case? I read in some places that "top" and "free -m" and such can help. But these gave me way more than 512. Here is the output from my "free -m". Total shows here 3886 MBs of MEM??? That is almost 4 Gigs. VPS And RAM
I want to host around 20 sites. The sites will not be very intensive. They are going to be either static or dynamic (CMS) but not too intensive. My requirement is that the sites are very fast, the loading of the pages to be very quick. I am thinking of a VPS instead of a reseller acount, because I think that with a VPS I will control the account better and will have guaranteed resources so that the sites are fast and not affected by other heavy users/sites. I will manage the VPS with a control panel like cPanel. Now, because it is my first time with a VPS I have some questions: 1) For the above requirements (loading speed), and for hosting around 20-25 sites, how much RAM (guaranteed) you think that I should have. As I told, I have no experience, so I don't know how much RAM is required. Will 512 MB RAM will be enough for very fast loading sites? MAybe more than this? Please make your proposal! 2)Another question is: I have not experience with a VPS; will a control panel will be enough to control all aspects of the sites, and have the sites up and running? Or a control panel will not cover me (and I will need to know more of management)? 3) IS a VPS as difficult as a dedicated server to manage or more easy? 4) Can you tell me what are the steps on a VPS, in order to have my sites up and running? (e.g. first I need to setup DNS? secondly what? create a new site or a new customer/domain? what about the services like email, ftp, mysql? are these automatically set up by the control panel or I have to do this manually myself?) 5) I need a very high uptime! at least 99.9% and if possible more than this, like 99,95 or 99,99%. I don't care about the cost. (up to $150/month) Can you propose me a VPS provider that is famous about quality of service (speedy servers, exellent uptime, and great support 24/7)? Also I want this provider to have excellent and fast 24/7 support, and if possible to provide best-effort support for 3rd party software and helo with installation.

Q1: You've got one server with 8MB RAM. You offer a single VPS plan with 256GB guaranteed RAM. Does this mean that you are limited to exactly 32 VPS clients on this machine? (Or 8 clients if you had a single 1MB plan.) Q2: On a single Virtuozzo machine, again with 8MB RAM, do providers typically mix and match plans on the same box? RAM Or CPU
I tried using the search function but I kept on getting random results. But to the point, which is more important (effective) when handling hundreds to thousands of users at the same time (most usually uploading 50-150kb files constantly). Do I need more RAM or a stronger CPU? Right now I'm running on 320mb RAM burstable to 1gb, and a Dual AMD Opteron setup.

Is A VPS With 128mb RAM Enough For...?
I'm looking at a VPS with 128mb dedicated and 256mb burstable RAM. What I need to have on it is MYSQL, HTTPD (HTTP + HTTPS), Mail and FTP. My site has not much traffic, not more than 3000 visitors per month and it's an online shop so not CPU intensive. Do you think that would work on a VPS with the mentioned specs? Anything special I should think about if/when I install the apps on the server? Any good light FTP server or/and mail server you can recomend? I need HTTPD as webserver since I've worked with it before.

SolarVPS, Do You Not Have 1gig Ram?
My choice of VPS provider has come down to FutureHosting and SolarVPS... I like SolarVPS because Douglas has experience with hosting a high traffic SMF forum and therefore I hope he would be very useful and understanding if I encounter resource problems from my SMF forum. I've looked at the VPS packages on the SolarVPS website and I can't seem to find a UK VPS with 1gig of RAM... am I going blind? Most VPS providers I have looked at always have that and more.
