Apr 14, 2015Starting point: a working site using a shared IPv4, dedicated IPv6, and SSL. HTTP and HTTPS work, the latter only using SNI of course.
The good news: If I simply allocate an IP resource of 1 to a subscription it is pulled from the pool, assigned to the service node, assigned to the web site, DNS is updated, and the site is automatically changed to using a Dedicated IPv4 and Dedicated IPv6.
The bad news: visitors land on the default web site of the service node, with the default SSL certificate.
Other info: I can't ping the new IP, even though it shows in "ip a l" and /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:0. [edited]
After the IP assignment, it is still installed, and /etc/httpd/conf/plesk.conf.d/ip_default/domainname.conf shows the new certificate is being used.
However, a second set of VirtualHost entries is created in server.conf for this IP for ports 80 and 443, with NameVirtualHost enabled on the new IP. The port 443 entry uses the default certificate. Apache's setup this default VirtualHost entry will override the web site configuration because Apache is listening on port 443 with the wrong cert.
If I go to "Change webspace settings" and toggle to Shared IPv4, Dedicated IPv6 the site works again via HTTPS, and Dedicated IPv4 and Dedicated IPv6 breaks it again. Setting the SSL cert to None and back again does not work.
Setting the SSL cert to None, changing to a dedicated IP, and enabling SSL results in the server being inexplicably inaccessible...browsers no longer connect to either the default site or the correct site, and I don't see any entries in the vhosts's logs.
Photography Community
May 28, 2009I run a small forum of (100-200) users that belong to a photographic community.
I now have it running off my personal hosting account that I have with dreamhost.
I pay around USD 90-100.
Its an ok account, as I have unlimited domains, databases, even disk space I undesrstand.
The idea is to move it on a hosting account of its own.
I just want an advice for a company and a price, around the same margins, that I can move it too.
As I said above, there are around 100-150 users, with prospects of it going up but not very much. They also upload images on a daily basis, so disk space and reliability in that area (i know backups are usually my responsability but anyway) are important.
Which Host Is Best For Web 2.0 Community
May 30, 2008I am starting a social networking website that will give people the ability to have their own pages and upload videos to the site. The site is geared towards a specific niche, but has the potential to be very large and receive a lot of videos and traffic.
We are looking at different web developers and one is saying that we should go with a dedicated server with 500GB of disk space and 1500 GB of bandwidth.
The other developer is suggesting we go with a company that hosts media content and you only pay a low monthly charge and then the additional charges are based on number of video views per month. That way we don't have to worry about additional servers and this grows with us.
I am very confused, because it can get quite costly the more views we get, but they keep telling me it is cheaper than going with dedicated servers.
I'm trying to figure out how much can be held on a dedicated server with the above specifications and how much traffic/video views can it handle at one time.

Aug 25, 2008I've got my new hosting provider choice narrowed down to two providers (ServIt & WiredTree) for a Managed VPS. From the reviews here they both seem to be very similiar in customer support and reliability. The only difference I have found is that ServIt does have a community forum and WiredTree does not have a forum. It's wierd to be choosing a hosting provider based on this, so I thought I would come get your opinions on this.

Mar 20, 2007Taken from /proc/user_beancounters on this vps. This vps is given 512RAM and burstable to 1GB ram deal. On my whm server information, it is showing me 200+RAM, burstable to 500-600RAM. Am i really given what i am offer?

Level3 Discard Bgp Community
Jan 13, 2008Has anyone had issues with Level3 honoring their discard community recently (3556:9999)? We had to null 2 IPs earlier in the week. The first one they didn't pick up the route when advertised via BGP (or if they did, it took hours). We ended up having to call and get them to filter it manually. The second IP we were able to null route fine using BGP. Now we have another IP being attacked and it looks like Level3 isn't going to pick up the route and discard traffic.

Jul 9, 2008I've had four different hosts in 1½ year, and I'm noe experiencing problems again with my current host, Lunarpages. Therefore, I really want to make the right choice this time. It would be such a pleasure to see my website run without any problems for more than just 8-9 months at a time...
Anyway, let me try to describe it. It's based on the Content Management System phpFusion. It has news, downloads, forums and screenshots. The site itself is c. 2 GB large (because of forum attachments and screenshots), the download section is c. 15 GB, and the site use up about 700 GB og bandwidth each month. In the forum, there's 100.000 posts, growing day for day, of course. We have 12.000 registered members, but we only have c. 50 members online at the same time -- maximum. Throughout a week, 2.000 members log in, but as said, they are never online at the same time. The members are mostly from Europe, but we do also have members from USA and Australia.
I've had both Lunarpages and Servage as hosts, but I have experienced problems with both of them. Servage has a daily bandwidth limit which I had overlooked, and the website constantly exceeded this. Lunarpages is very, very slow when using a MySQL DB.
Hosting For Mid Size Community
Dec 11, 2008I own a parenting site, mid-sized I think (1100 members). We were recently "fired" by our host for server load. Sooo, I'm in the market for a new host. I'm so gun shy right now, because everyone is reassuring me they can handle us, but then so did the company that we're currently with.
Specs:
Phpbb3 software
Bandwith - 17.7gb so far this month
Disk Space - 111.3 mb this month
There are an average of 100 members on line at a time. I've been told we need a dedicated server by some, though I don't think we're big enough at this venture for one, and it's out of our budget. I realize the things I listed above don't have much to do with server load, but I figured I'd share anyway.
Community String For Server
Jul 20, 2007We have some Cisco servers that are being administrated by Affant. I recently downloaded a network management tool called SolarWinds and it looks really interesting and amazing because it can do so much for network monitoring. It seems that it needs not only the IP address for out server, but also a Community String. I tried the basic defaults (private, public) but they will not connect. I researched online and found some other defaults for a 3COM network, but none of those worked either.
I was going to try and telnet through to the server but port 23 (default telnet port) is closed. Im sure its for security purposes. I also read online that if I used a packet sniffer, I would be able to sniff out packets which hed the community string in them.
However, I could not find a sniffer which would actually do this. Any suggestions on a good packet sniffer that could do this?
Also, If the telnet port is closed, is there any other way I could telnet into the server on a different port? Or maybe use some other way to access the server?
I really want to use this program but I dont think my corperate office would like us to be monitoring it using this third party software, but us IT people dont really care...
If there is anything you can help out with, it would be most appreciated.
Burstable Billing
Sep 15, 2009I'm really confused about burstable billing. I'm hoping you guys can help me out.
I'm currently with Softlayer and I have two dedicated servers with 2TB of bandwidth a month. So far this has been fine for me.
I'm getting ready to move to a third server and therefore I'm looking at colo space. The problem is that they all seem to charge by the Mbps instead of by the overall bandwidth you use.
The bandwidth here in Austin is expensive (About $200+ per Mbps) and I have no idea how much I'd need.

Any idea how much bandwidth I'd need? Also, are these colos just screwing with me? Should I be able to find a plan that charges me by overall bandwidth instead of using bustable billing?

OpenVZ Burstable Memory
Dec 1, 2007Let say your VPS has 128MB of memory. My understanding would be that if you had, say, another 128MB of 'burstable' memory, that if another guest on the system wasn't using all it's memory, or if there was some spare on the system, then your VPS could use that.
But, how much memory does your VPS really think it has available? and what happens if the other VPS (or the system) decides it wants it memory back?
Does OpenVZ just start killing off your processes until it free's up enough memory?

With this specification, I also have DirectAdmin running and my website is www.christianforumsite.com (A forum)
So far, It's really good but there are some hourly lag times and two very very short downtimes in a few months time span. RH told me that my site had a high memory usage and that I might have to upgrade it.
So my questions are:
1. Could forums take a lot of memory and force the OS to kill some processes. In my case the forum is active but it not like huge community. Traffic report on alexa: [url]
It appears on top if you search for christian forum or christian forums, so the bots might be doing some damage too. Also I am using DirectAdmin with the lowest plan.
2. Could upgrading to the next VPS plan make the site noticeably faster and eliminate the lag times I've been experiencing?
3. What specifically (RAM guaranteed/burstable, discspace) should be high in case of a growing forum. Any other recommendation?

Jun 17, 2007I wonder what does this mean. I no what a 100mbit connectivity is but what does it mean by burstable.
Does it mean that the downloading will start off really fast and then go down to my normal internet connection. What i mean is that if i download say from the microsoft.com, It will start at about 400kb/sec and then slowely progress to 260kb/sec.
With my server with in a datacenter, it starts from about 100kb/sec and then makes it way up to 260kb/sec. I am moving datacenter. So what does it mean by burstable.
CPanel/WHM Managed VPS With At Least 512MB Burstable
Jun 29, 2007I'm currently in the market for a new VPS that will be used for a single website. The client had it on a shared server, and ended up having it get suspended from too many httpd connections one day. Though the 2+ months it's been up, there haven't been any prior issues, so I think there was just something on that day that people found the website.
Anyway, according to WHM's bandwidth log, it hasn't used more then 46GB in a month, so I don't foresee this account needing to surpass 100GB of bandwidth.
The amount if disk space being used it currently at 1GB but up to 3-5GB would suffice.
I've tried out Direct Admin, but I'm much more knowledgable with WHM and cPanel that if at all possible, I'd want that on it. I'd prefer not to have to pay extra monthly for a license; I'd like for it to be included in the price.
I'm not looking for full management, but just basic management (and having support that actually reads your tickets as opposed to repeating the same bs every other ticket.. speaking from personal experience with another *cough* VPS host.)
I'm looking for the price range to be under $30 a month for the specs needed.
I realize cPanel needs a bit more memory, so.. hopefully this is justifiable:

I've already tried out Primary VPS, so I don't want to go there. Spry's VPS is unmanaged, and I don't want to configure the VPS myself at all (I'm lazy and I really suck at SSH commands.)
If any of you guys can offer some ideas of VPS hosts to look into, that would fit the prereqs I listed, I would be forever in your debt (or not) but I'd really appreciate it.
I just don't want to deal with Primary VPS anymore, and have been stumped as to what other VPS hosts to look into. Obviously I'm still going to search around here, but sometimes I like hearing personal recommendations...

Does My Site Need A VPS Or Dedicated Server
Jun 14, 2008I own a site that is MySQL driven, shared hosting is no way to go now with over 100 guests on the site, and alot of MySQL usage...
My question is, do we need a dedicated server? or the site would function great with 99% uptime on a VPS?
Another issue is, the site gets DDoS / DoS attacks between now and then, haters out there... so would a VPS be able to stay up against the attacks? can I install CSF with no problems? or any other firewall?
Let me know what you think, and if VPS is the way to go, please suggest some VPS hosting providers...
Site Capacity Of Dedicated Server
Apr 3, 2008What would be the site hosting capacity of a dedicated server in terms of numbers of small sites.
1000 visitors a day for example.
Perhaps 5 page views a vistor and each site having a VBulletin as a sub-domain.
Would it be best to run them all off one dedicated server or each site just off a small hosting plan?
For organizational purposes it seems the dedicated server would be the way to go?

Originally the intention was to forget as soon as possible about what happened in the past three months and to move on with our new isp. To our regret, Leaseweb has besides the overall lack of service in the past months found it neccessary to kill our network connection without notice a day prior to the ending of our contract. Dedicated Vs Rackspace Cloud For Classified Site
Oct 2, 2009I'm currently running two classified ad sites with a php script and a mysql database. Both just launched, but I expect them to have decent traffic within 1 year.
Here are the two options I'm currently considering:
1. a fully managed dedicated server such as Wiredtree provides. This will roughly cost me between $250 and $350/month.
2. go with Rackspace Cloud. Take advantage of their $100/month and then just pay as you go as traffic increases.
It's a hard decision.
