Preferred Currency At Canadian Datacenters
Oct 18, 2007
We currently have a managed server at a datacenter in Ontario, and the provider had always charged us in USD. This is fine with us, as most of our revenue is in USD and then we're not subject to currency risk.
Now that the Canadian dollar has reached parity and then exceeded the USD, I'm wondering more about this policy. Is it typical that datacenters in Canada price in USD, or is our provider the exception? They list prices on their site only in USD, despite being a Canadian company and only having facilities in Canada.

I see lots of folks on WHT selling servers at very reasonable prices (3-500), however, shippping to CanadaLand is often about the same as the server.
With that being said, does anyone know of any Canadian outlets, people, persons, or business that offer used 1-5u servers?
I know Dell and HP are out there, but I am looking for used.

Can anyone recommend a reliable hosting company located in Canada, preferably in Ontario? I am looking to resell hosting to a variety of clients. Excellent customer support is an absolute must. Also need an easy-to-use interface with maybe cPanel, access to eCommerce software, the whole nine yards. I know that NetworkSolutions (U.S.-based) operates in Canada. Anyone deal with them? I do deal with hosting companies in other parts of the world but have some clients who wish to remain domestic.

I have been online since 95 and I've got a lot of information I could help others with regarding web development and interface design.
One thing I'm terrible at is System Administration, but I'm getting better and my first step is to pick a reliable operating system for both the webservers and the database servers. Would anyone be willing to answer the following questions or point me to a thread that already discusses these?
A little background, our site has 200k members, 30k active and is growing by about 5k a week. We still run MySQL 4.0.27 on the DB servers and they are running FC2. The webservers are Apache 1.3.37 and PHP 4.4.2 running FC2 and FC4 as well.
My questions
1. What OS would you prefer to upgrade to for the web servers? and a
"few" reasons why?
2. What OS would you prefer to upgrade to for the database servers?
and a "few" reasons why?

I have been happy at site5. Due to the Patriot Act, the stricter Canadian PIPEDA law, and my Canadian residency, I am looking for a comparable Canadian host.
I have a number of domains. My research has not revealed any Canadian hosts that offer something comparable to the convenience of Site5's MultiSite. Looks like to operate multiple domains under a single account in Canada the administration is via subdomains or domain pointers rather than what MultiSite does. Is anyone aware of a Canadian host that offers MultiSite like functionality.
The company and all of its hardware must be in Canada so the data does not become subject to the laws of other jurisdictions.

Anyone aware of a hosting company with all of their hardware in Canada who offers in their basic accounts the ability to host multiple domains without using sub-domains or sub-folders.
I want to host several domains with individual administration and security so that a bad script or hack of one wont affect the other domains.
Hoping to do it with a single account.

Is there a way to change the default value of the "Preferred domain" option in the hosting settings of domains in Plesk 11.5? When ever i create a new subscription/domain it just defaults to the value of "domain.ltd" and i have to go into the hosting settings and manually change it to "None". Is there a way i can set it to use the "None" option every time i create new subscriptions or domains?

I have a questions for you other Canadians out there co-locating machines in the United States. How do you deal with shipping back servers to you that need repaired? I had to ship a server back to me via UPS recently and to my surprise it arrives to me with a $150 COD charge on it. I ended up talking to UPS and it ended up being $50 for brokerage fee's. But I'm wondering if there is any secret some of you are using to get the machines back without crazy border fee's? This is the first instance I've had to ship something back as the provider would not diagnose the machine on site or even help with shipping I had to go through UPS and then had to rely on the provider marking the right reason for shipping which they did not do.

After upgrade plesk 11 to 11.5 there is a new feature in domain hosting settings which is called "Preferred domain"
We can not change the state of Preferred domain. It always remain domain.tld When we try to change it to "none" panel says "Information: The settings were successfully updated."
When we check hosting settings again Preferred domain section is domain.tld . due to that reason we r having lots of diffuculties. Lots web page down due to web.config file has redirection.

I am considering a server from Iweb wich is based in Canada.
My question is about search engines especially google. My site will be targeting US visitors and I am in the US. When google and other search engines see that my IP address is in Canada will it have any affect on search engine ranking for the regular us google.com? I don't care much about rankings on google.ca since my visitors will mainly be in the USA. anybody have any insite on this? I also want to mention my domain name will be a .com domain

so say you have a web site that's uses PHP and MySQL and then your visitors are mostly from Asia and some from the US.
You get a server from a Singaporean datacenter for the Asian traffic and you also get a server in the US for the US and nearby countries traffic.
Both servers will use the same domain. It's just that it will automatically redirect you to the datacenter which is nearer to you so if your from Asia then you will be redirected to the Singapore datacenter otherwise to the US datacenter.

I have partners down in Dallas, Tx. that are deciding on whether or not they want to go with "ThePlanet" datacenter. But, we just want to know before purchasing any or keeping any servers there that the datacenter is fully equipped with 24/7 monitoring, fire safety, flood safety, backup generators, etc. We're thinking of leasing 2 servers there, and we just need to know some details before going on. Now, I know there's all that information on the website and I've done alot of research on them, but I want to know from WHT's first-hand experience of ThePlanet is any good.
So, if you've used ThePlanet datacenters, can you please help me out. I'm highly suggesting ThePlanet as one of the datacenters I might use. Because it's located in Dallas, TX. it would be alot easier to co-locate the server, or check up on it once and a while or sort out any problems, etc.
Please leave a message of your first-hand experience with this datacenter.

I'm sure your facility is great. However, we're from California. You're from Idaho or some similar place. That means you're supposed to be cheaper than our current solution by default. Unless you're in Chicago, then you're going to be very bandwidth and talent poor compared to us, so cheap real estate is the only thing you have going for you. Maybe you just shouldn't pitch Californian companies, because all we can do is point and laugh.
P.S. Terrorists don't attack infrastructure, so stop telling me that your farmland datacenter is a great site because terrorists will never attack it. Terrorists will also never attack any of my other datacenters.

Would you be happy to host your BUSINESS (i.e. servers etc) at a datacenter or ISP that's known for ignoring spam complaints?
I am just curious because I already submitted SEVERAL spam complaints to servercentral.net but they simple ignore it. A big anti-spam list such as Spamcop not even bother to try and submit spam complaints to them and purge such complaints.
abuse#servercentral.net@devnull.spamcop.net
In my opinion it's a high risk to host your servers at a company that ignore spam complaints because many of their IP addresses will eventually be on spam block lists. (And because IP addresses are "recycled" I won't be happy to get IP addresses assigned to a server that was previously used by a spammer)
