Multiple Accounts/Subnets Hosting Plans
Apr 10, 2009
I am the IT Director for a Furniture Manufacturing Company. I would like to establish relationships with Web Hosting Professionals that can provide me with multiple hosting accounts. Each must be on a different subnet. They do not require dedicated IP's. These accounts will be used to back link to a master domain. I can assure you that there will be no spamming or other unscrupulous activity on these accounts. Our company has been in business since 1862. I welcome this community to give me feedback thoughts ideas etc..

I just tried westhost. Very nice folks, good reviews, worth a shot. I signed up for a regular hosting account that allows multiple domains. That didn't work for email. An email user has access to email under that users name for all domains attached to the account. so you can't have info@abc.com, info@def.com, etc. One info@ per account. I did find a hack for it, but it wouldn't work with web mail.
So now I need to find a host that separates mail by domain WITH webmail.
This is getting so tiresome. I have a VPS with "the planet", but so many things just don't work out of the box. I've been fighting with them about PHP not sending mail for months. DNS problems everytime I setup a new domain. There has to be an easier way!
15 domains, everything needs to work. I don't want to manage anything. No resellers. The company I host with will own the data center.

How do you think specialized hosting plans (specially for blog, forum, gallery, etc) with less features for newbies in comparison with those mostly offered by huge hosting companies are worth selling?

I have noticed that most "reputable" VPS providers state both guaranteed and burst amount of RAM. However there also seems like plenty that only advertise burstable (looks better in the ad, I know) no matter how closely I look over the details.
For a Virtuozzo based VPS, is the guaranteed amount of ram something that must be specified? Or can it be configured for some sort of free for all burstable only accounts?
What I am wondering is if there is any good reason why a host would NOT tell me how much guaranteed RAM I would get?

I would like to hear some opinions about shared and VPS (VDS) hosting plans. Is it the new trend to get a VPS plan? What are the criteria for opting for VPS or shared plan? I don't know how to create a survay here,
The question is:
Do you prefer Shared or VPS(VDS) hosting plans?

Google App Engine offers free quotas of 1 GB outbound traffic per day and 6.5 CPU-hours (based on a 1.2 GHz Intel x86 processor) per day.
How do those free quotas compare to web hosting plans? For example, the traffic supported by the free quotas -- is that
generally higher or less than the traffic supported by a typical $5/mo shared hosting account?
Above the free quotas, Google charges $0.12 per GB outgoing traffic, $0.10 per GB incoming traffic, $0.10 per CPU-hour, $0.15 per GB storage per month.
How do those numbers translate to normal web hosting plans? For example, the traffic that can be supported by a $40/mo VPS plan and $200/mo dedicated server plan, what would they cost on Google App Engine?
I know it depends on a lot of factors, but if anyone has any ballpark estimates or experiences they're willing to share I'd really appreciate it.
I'm trying to decide between App Engine and standard web hosting for a DB-backed Python site. The site will start small, but if the traffic grows I want to see which would be a better option long term.

From reading a good lot of posts here, I can see that HostGator seems to be a good company and that many have a good feedback to give about it. I've also been reading that you should avoid overselling, though understand that some companies, even though they offer "Unlimited space and bandwidth", they can manage it well. I guess HostGator falls in that category too. My questions here:
1) So what are the conditions under which it is okay to go for a company that offers unlimited space and bandwidth? (Expecting answers like 'if you just have a few blogs and don't require...')
I have read (here and elsewhere) that for most people's requirements, a shared web hosting would do. However, for someone a with a little more web baggage (individuals, not businesses), it is generally advised that they look at semi-dedicated hosting plans.
2) Based on the above quoted, objectively, what are the things that you should look at (like traffic per day etc) and what should be their values (for e.g. like 15000 uniques per day etc) while considering moving from sharing to semi-dedicated plans? I think some of them are the following, can you give me approximate values for these when I should consider the move?
a) Traffic
b) Number of active websites
c) Sites with heavy resource usage. (Can you give me some examples of this?)
d)...
What else am I missing in this list?

do Dedicated Server hosting plans always allow for unlimited domains?"
It would be great if it was so, but I have NO idea if it is that way. My common sense says "of course stupid, you have the whole box for yourself", but my guts tell me I should know better before assuming it.

Did anyone ever had an issue, when you click fetch accounts list and it displays 0 packages and 0 accounts? Even if there are hundreds of accounts in server.
cPanel 11.18.5-R23897
Could this be cPanel bug?

We offer virtual servers and have had a couple of inquiries we don't fully understand. In both cases we have been asked how many subnets we have, as the potential customer uses the servers for virtual private networking and will only run one per subnet.
Of course we are happy to divulge such information, and inform people when we acquire new subnets, but I can't help but be curious about the need for diverse subnets.
Searching for VPN and subnets has been problematic as every VPN guide out there tells you how to set up your virtual subnet. What I haven't found is why the subnet the VPN server is publicly available on makes any difference.
Is there some routing resilience aspect I am missing? I suppose this might be related to some DNS registrars' requirement to have two servers on different class C subnets, that is all about enforcing redundancy.

I've just put all my own domains on their own server, away from my clients' domains.
I don't really want to go through 60 Cpanel accounts creating an email address for myself in each.
Is there a way to create a single pop account in each account? I seem to recall there's a way to change the default email address to fail: or blackhole: server-wide so I guess there'll be a way to create a mail account.

I have to mass change the ownership of accounts and I find "Change Owner of Multiple Accounts" tedious.
I found a bash script but I'm not sure if this works
Quote:
#!/bin/bash
IFS="$"
cd /var/cpanel/users
if [ $# = 2 ]; then
replace "OWNER=${1}" "OWNER=${2}" -- /var/cpanel/users/*
else
echo "USAGE: ./${0} <old reseller login> <new reseller login>"
fi
If that works, how can I tweak it so that the change in ownership of accounts will be based in the hosting package and not in the old reseller account?

I've got a few colocated servers hooked up to a 3COM switch. When I looked at the MRTG for the ports, I noticed that all the ports had a similar inbound traffic graphing. Thinking that something was amiss, I sniffed the port and found that I was seeing a lot of traffic from different subnets (could even see pop3 passwords!).
Now, I contacted the IDC and they said that this was normal, and that that was how their network was configured (I did tell them that other IDCs didn't have this issue). I think something's not right somewhere. And assuming that the IDC won't fix this issue, I don't want to have constant 1Mbps of inbound traffic that I don't even use.

We're managing a CMS script which we offer as a hosted solution / leased script. This means we have several accounts on our server, one pr. client/script user. They all run the same script software and occasionally we have to upgrade the script on these sites. Until now this is being done manually.
Connect with FTP -> upload new files -> Done.
This is very easy work but takes annoyingly much time due to FTP needing to set up connections, switching accounts, etc.. and if you have 100s or 1000s of accounts this becomes...yes...you know..
The question is now, how can this be done easier? I was hoping that it would be possible to do this automated somehow (we have root access to our server).

I have about 5 sites all hosted on my same hosting account. One of those domains is attached to the hosting account. I place my other domains in a folder of a sub-directory of my main domain. This has been working fine, up until today when i noticed a weird error. I give you a little example of how my sites are setup
my main domain:
www.maindomain.com
My other sites hosted in a sub-directory of my main domain:
www.maindomain.com/sites/site2/
www.maindomain.com/sites/site3/
How my other sites appear on the web:
www.site2.com
www.site3.com
This works fine for every page until i go to www.site2.com/index.php
It redirects to www.maindomain.com/sites/site2/index.php for some reason

I know that after you have been running a site for a while you will have some "clutter" after a while. For example, email boxes that are not used might be taking up a lot of space because they are getting spammed.

I am looking for a multiple IP hosting solution for our network of 10 sites. Ideally I'm hoping to find a host which will allow me to consolidate all of our sites within one control panel, but be able to offer each site to be hosted on a unique class-c IP so that we can enhance the benefit of inter-linking between sites.
If you can suggest a solution beyond www.seohosting.com that would be fantastic.

The first thing i'm thinking of is cpanel but there's many others If you're runing a server with 5000gb traffic/bandwidth per month When you're creating hosting accounts, could you allow 5000gb in
each new account you're creating?
Like if you had unmetered, you'd put unmetered in every new account Considering no account would ever reach any way near their monthly allowance.

I just want to provide what it takes to change hosting company or moving from one to another.
Here is 10 steps how you can do it.
Please correct me if I forgot something or I am totally wrong (wing-wong)
1.Identify a web hosting company that provides the features and services most suitable for you.
2.Order an appropriate hosting package from the supplier.
3.Use the Control Panel facilities to manage your email boxes and such like.
4.Begin the transfer of your domain or change the domain records and change email settings if required (your new web hosting supplier
should provide guidance and support to make this as simple as possible).
5.Copy all your files from your previous web hosting service.
6.Upload the files to your new hosted web space.
7.Transfer any databases required for your website.
8.Check that all files have been copied and uploaded successfully.
9.Test functionality and content related to any databases.
10.If you have not done so already, cancel your previous hosting service.
By the way I think that the most biggest problem is to know how to get moving from one to another hosting that’s why people always thinks that
they will stick to one hosting company and forget all major problems with that company (downtimes, long servers maintenance and etc.)…
I am trying to analyze cPanel, DirectAdmin and Plesk and will provide all (as much as I can) information regarding how to transfer your website.
