Move Files From Server 2 Server
Jul 25, 2007
I want to move around 20Gb of files from one shared hosting account with custom contraol panel to a cpanel VPS.
Is there anyway of transferring all the files to new host without downloading and uploading to the new host. Coz i have normal DSL and 20 GB downloading and uploading can take years.
There are some forum files CHMOD to specific values if you can transfer them without resetting them in new host also cool.
both servers have SSH and FTP

I'm trying to move all files in the public_html folder from one server to the other. The way I used to do it was download all the files to my computer, then upload them again to the new server. This is a hassle and time consuming, obviously.
My question is, what is the SSH command to do the following:
- Zip the public_html folder
- Move or Copy zipped file from server #1 to server #2
- Unzip it the public_html folder
I figure this is the easiest way to do what I'm trying to do, unless you know of a better and faster way.

For those of you who are techies you will probably laugh, but to me this is like Greek and scarey
The deal is that I blog for PayPerPost and after they implemented Real Rank only my main blog was able to be monitored for RR. I have 4 other blogs in the system that I can't take any assignments on because they have no real rank. The reason they don't is that the URLs are all the same as the first blog, except that the other 4 have "blog1, blog2, etc., at the end of their address.
SO I went into my hosting control panel of Yahoo and created subdomains for each of the four, reversing the address from internetmarketingreview.org/blog1 to blog1.internetmarketingreview. org. (I thought I was pretty smart to do even that!)
Now you can see my blogs at the addresses. I was really happy, that is until I realized that the permalinks won't work! Of course they won't. Nothing has been done but cosmetic changes. I am just now understanding that somewhere I am missing a step, I have been researching this and I believe I need to move some files, but I am afraid of screwing things up.
I went to the Wordpress forum and found a permalink plugin from Yahoo, but I don't know if installing that will solve my problem. I have a pretty good idea that no, it won't. That too is about cosmetics, right?

I have some 100's of MB's to move and I'm definitely not doing it by transferring it via my PC / FTP.
I seen all the tutorials on how to move your MySQL databases, but what about full folders etc, how do I move those (putty?)?

We have three virtual hosts on our Apache 2.2 installation on Windows Server 2003. For some reason, I'm unable to open log files (error.log and each virtual hosts-specific log), even though I have full administrator rights. (The log folder is full access to admins.) Every time I try to open the file or even copy it to another location, it just says "Access Denied." I temporarily solved the issue for one of the logs by adding BufferedLogs On

I've been with LayeredTech and my yearly renewal is up. Their pricing went up significantly, so I'm shopping at SoftLayer amongst others. My site gets roughly 700k unique visitors and 1.8 million pageviews. These numbers will likely go up. I run vBulletin and Joomla dbs. I have two identical servers (one has cPanel). They are configured:
Dual Quad Core 5310 Intel XEON's 1.60 GHz-- Dual 73GB SCSI drives - 4GB RAM -- 8GB Cache.
The webserver uses Litespeed as an apache replacement.
Q: They are offering upgrades to either Xeon 5320 or 5335. Does anyone have a recommendation on either?
Q: I've heard that database servers don't necessarily need as much spec wise as webservers. Should I upgrade my webserver? Downgrade the mySQL server?
Unfortunately, I need to make this move today to get the pricing and put the wheels in motion, so I don't get billed by Layered Tech for 1 year of service.

I was just wondering is it possible to move a directory to another server through SSH?
I bought a website a few weeks ago and I have all the files on the server except 30gb of content, now I've tried to put the folder into a tar archive but every time I try it brings up this error:
So I need a way to drag that folder from the old server to my new server through SSH because it will take me ages downloading and uploading all the content.

I'm a programmer at a company, and since I'm the only technical inclined person I have been given the responsibility of a "server" move - even though I'm a bit on the deep end here.
At the moment we have a shared hosting solution were we have our email and an ASP.NET application. We need better performance and thus we are moving to a dedicated server at ServerBeach.
I need to install our app at the dedicated server (that's the easy part), and then I need to setup Exchange Server (hard part) and then also obviously move the domain so it points at the new domain.
I have never ever installed Exchange on a server and I've heard it's a real PITA.
My checklist is this:
Install db
Install app
Make a redirect from the old server place to the new server
Set up Exchange Server 2007
Point the domain to the new place.
I'm the process of reading a 172-page long guide from MS on how to installing Exchange 2007, but I'd be interested in hearing any hints and tips on this.

I have two dedicated server, and I want move a domain from one to the other.
Although I changed the name server 3 or 4 weeks ago, still some mails hit to old server (this can be checked after POP3 login with IP address of old server).
Most of mail reach to a new server but still some to old.
if this would be propagation problem with ISP or something wrong with DNS set up on the server?

Only just started designing sites for clients as an add-on to promotional work, all of which are on shared servers that clients have organised for themselves, so all we do is Ftp content to the servers when required. However, we now have a client who wants to use video on their site, which, I understand, requires a dedicated server if we do not want to use a video hosting service (is there a video hosting service that does not demand credit when the video is run?).
The move to a dedicated server is a step into the unknown for us. If we have a dedicated server, does this give us the potential to host other client sites on it? What should we be looking for in terms of bandwidth, transfer rates, etc? Can anyone recommend good video streaming software? What are the potential pitfalls?

to move 14 servers from one facility in the Westin Building to another. IPs are changing too.
Any nuggets of wisdom to share on things that I need to make sure happen for the move to be successful?
Here is my list so far:
- lower TTLs on A records in DNS to 600 seconds at least 24 hours before move.
- prepare to update IPs in config files for each server for networking, firewall, email servers, apache configs andresolv.confs.
- ensure backup MX is ready to handle the load.

A chicken or egg type of problem with potential to escalate into an egg on the face problem.
I have two VPS accounts with PowerVPS, which we need to move to one new VPS account. Problem is I'm not sure how to handle the DNS move or settings to minimise downtime.
Currently the DNS is spread over the two VPS accounts. How do we keep the same DNS names and move to one new VPS without dramas?
PS. Before you say "ask PowerVPS", they don't support DNS config on two VPS accounts.

we're a webdesign company who also sell hosting (white labled). we have over 500 websites hosted with a company (based at telehouse in london - which is a good selling point for us when selling hosting packages). Theyve been really good (reliable servers, good support, good control panel etc...). Theyve also won awards for the reliability of their servers. Unfortunatley, over the past year we've noticed theyve raised their charges by quite a bit and the support has been very poor.
My question is: does anyone reccommend a company we can move all our sites to? this is obviously business critical (not only for us but for all our clients too!), and so we want to be absolutely certain of the company and what they can offer before we move over everything.
We've thought about a dedicated server with 1&1. It would be a fraction of the cost, but I always believe in 'you get what you pay for'. could this be the case here?
