Is Your ISP Supposed To Add Reverse DNS For A Dedicated Server

Jun 1, 2009

I've been having a problem for the last year: most of my pages are indexed by the IP address - not domian name and I suspect it is because of the lack of reverse DNS

Is my ISP supposed to add reverse DNS or should I buy one from dyndns as I am using their DNS service

Reverse Proxy - Protect A Web Server

May 31, 2008

Background (so you know what I am planning)

I will be storing personal customer information in mysql, so security is driving all my requirements. I was thinking the architecture will be :-a dedicated web server within a DMZ and placed behind a firewall and border router.

a dedicated database server inside the internal network behind another firewall,
All running Linux

building out and management of the servers to be done by hosting provider or third party
Please feel free to comment on this setup.

QuestionsIs a reverse proxy a benefit for security.

Am I right in saying that a reverse proxy hides the OS and server details from prying eyes and provides another layer of security

if a reverse proxy server is a benefit, is it normally the default architecture at most reputable hosts.

Reverse Proxy For Server-A Through Server-B Using Squid

Jun 10, 2007

Is it possible to implement reverse proxy for Sever-A through Sever-B.

The issue is let's say, Server-A is located in Network-A, and the Sever-B is located in Network-B. And the users in Network-B are allowed to access only to Sever-B while the Sever-B itself can access to Server-A. So, when the users from Network-B access to Sever-B, the traffic will be proxied through Sever-B to Server-A transparently without letting the users notice about how's the traffics go. The Server-B will be linux, thus squid is the primary proxy application to deal with. Is it possible to do with squid or it needs some other application?

How about a comparison of mod_proxy for apache vs. squid as all Sever-B should do is forward the requests coming from Network-B to forward to Sever-A and acting as a middle box between the two network scopes transparently. All the users in Network-B should do is accessing the Sever-B and the requests will be transparently going to Server-A without any configuration is done at their browser or any kind of NAT/Firewall rules on either of the networks.

Reverse Domain Name Server (DNS) Problems With My Provider. Why?

Mar 20, 2008

Maybe somebody here can shed light on this issue. I have a VPS that is hosted at the Colo4Dallas datacenter. I have purchased a block of 5 IP addresses, and then requested reverse dns zones be added for each IP.

The original 2 IP addresses that came with it, adding reverse DNS zones were no problem, it was done within a day. For some reason though, these additional 5 IP addresses they are having a horrible time with getting the zones added. My host that I have the VPS through said they put the ticket in, and Colo4Dallas is saying they may not be able to add the reverse DNS entries for some reason. I could not get any technical detail yet though because they are still working on it.

My question to everyone here is.... why? Granted I do not know *THAT* much about the datacenter-side of things, but it would seem to me that an IP is an IP, and if you could add the zones for the original 2 IP addresses, why is it not as easy with an additional 5? I *have* to have reverse dns entries for these IP's for email reasons for my customers that will be on these IP addresses.

Can anyone shed some light on what the technical problem could possibly be?

Apache :: Reverse Proxy Modules - Error Reading Status Line From Remote Server

Oct 17, 2013

We have been using Apache 2.2.x with reverse proxy modules for our clients to access their OWA servers for over a year. I want to get us to Apache 2.4.x so I setup a test box with latest 2.4 on it. I fixed the config file issues since 2.4 has changes in it. OWA proxy is working on my test server with Apache 2.4. But with 2.4 I do have an issue I cannot figure out. Note that this does NOT occur with Apache 2.2. I get the following errors when using ActiveSync through reverse proxy:

[Thu Oct 17 12:19:11.670665 2013] [proxy_http:error] [pid 748:tid 8440] (OS 10060)A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond. : [client x.x.x.x:20311] AH01102: error reading status line from remote server mail.nameredacted.net:443
[Thu Oct 17 12:19:11.670665 2013] [proxy:error] [pid 748:tid 8440] [client x.x.x.x:20311] AH00898: Error reading from remote server returned by /Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync

So somehow with Apache 2.4 there is some sort of timeout that was not there with 2.2.

Reverse Domain Name Server (DNS) ARPA For Domain On VPS

Jul 6, 2007

I have a vps with dedicated ip's for my domain names.

I read that in order for mails coming from my server not be picked up as spam, i need to add reverse ip entries.

Now i have already added the glue nameserver records on my godaddy control panel,

ns1.mydomain.com -> 10.20.30.40
ns2.mydomain.com -> 10.20.30.41

But do i need to speak to the datacenter to add the reverse dns entries for my domain on their nameservers? What about if i host my nameservers offsite, but then have my webserver/mailserver etc inside the datacenter? Would i need to request the datacenter where the nameservers are hosted to add the reverse ip entries for the domain, and then the request the same from the datacenter for my web/mail servers to add the reverse entries?

Is it really required?

Dedicated Server Vs Virtual Dedicated Server ..

Sep 7, 2008

I am currently using a shared hosting but due to increasing traffic and server load my existing host is not able to provide reliable services and I am planning to upgrade my hosting service.

While I was searching for Dedicated Servers, I learnt about Virtual Dedicated Servers but I am not very sure about their reliability? Are Virtual Dedicated Servers useful? My website current serves over 2500-3000 visitors a day resulting in 30,000 pageviews and I am expecting the traffic to grow by atleast 2 folds in the next few months as I start some PPC campaigns and Email Marketing for my website. Can a Virtual Dedicated Server cater such needs assuming my website to be more of less dynamic website written in php?

How Does Reverse DNS Work

Jul 22, 2009

some clarification with regards to Reverse DNS.

An example ip: xx.xxx.xxx.xx is owned by A Company via a DC. The they have their name allocated to the netname and description when i look up their ip address.

I have my ip xx.xxx.xxx.xx this is me and it currently contains my DC's name throughout when i look it up as the description and netname...

Both are from the same DC however the other company has their name allocated to the ip address and i would like to do the same. Does this require Reverse DNS? It dosent involve domains surely does it?

Reverse DNS And PTR Records

Dec 7, 2008

We recently decided to move all our DNS to a service called DNS Made Easy and also our sever box. We setup what they call Vanity DNS with ns0.domain.com and ns1.domain.com so our clients did not have to change their nameservers.

Our records for all domains are now setup and looks like they are beginning to propagate. Here's where the question is:

IP - 1.1.1.1 is for domain1
IP - 1.1.1.2 is for domain2, domain3 and domain4
IP - 1.1.1.3 is for domain5

All domains have MX records pointing to a either Google or Mailtrust.

what is the best way to setup Reverse DNS and PTR's for this setup and what should we ask our ISP to do for Reverse DNS in this case.

Reverse DNS Lookup ...

May 5, 2008

if I do a reverse lookup on my server's IP it returns a host assigned by the data center. So is this something I should even be managing too or is that always left up to the DC? I run my own DNS for the forward lookup zones.

Also just a technical question, when you do a reverse lookup, how does it know where to look to get the host? I'm not sure I fully understand how these work.

HE.net Deligated Reverse DNS On /27

Jun 26, 2007

I am having trouble pinning down exactly what I am doing wrong with reverse DNS at HE.net on a /27 subnet.

Example host:
65.19.156.29
master1.ipcoast.net

It looks to me like HE.net has properly deligated the subnet:

# dig -x 65.19.156.29 @ns1.he.net.

;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
subnet0.156.19.65.in-addr.arpa. 86400 IN NS ns2.ipcoast.net.
subnet0.156.19.65.in-addr.arpa. 86400 IN NS ns1.ipcoast.net.

And I have the zone file on both of those servers. But still won't resolve from outside coming in.
