Reverse DNS - Which Hostname

Apr 13, 2007

I have a VPS with the hostname myhost.domain.com, with four IP addresses, one of which is assigned to a shared hosting account (using WHM/cPanel) at sub.domain.com.

For email delivery purposes (I'm sending e-commerce receipts (that MUST be delivered) from PHP apps running on sub.domain.com), do I need to set up reverse DNS entries that say their IP addresses belong to myhost.domain.com, or to sub.domain.com?

Plesk 11.x / Linux :: SMTP - Reverse DNS Is Not A Valid Hostname

Jun 11, 2015

I use PLESK 11 on one of my servers, and use NS.mydomain & NS1.mydomain, everything works fine, DNS Zones are OK, reverse DNS is OK...

Except on MXTOOLBOX this :

SMTP Valid Hostname > Reverse DNS is not a valid Hostname
SMTP Reverse > DNS Mismatch OK - 195.154.XXX.XXX resolves to mydomain.eu
SMTP Banner Check > OK - Reverse DNS matches SMTP Banner

Tried so many searches on Google, but no response and always 3 same pages from MXTOOLBOX.

I migrated IP of this server in datacenter, because they ask us to do it, so in /etc/hosts for example I found old IP, I changed it, restart network interface, but always the same thing... postfix too (changed IP and restart).

How Does Reverse DNS Work

Jul 22, 2009

some clarification with regards to Reverse DNS.

An example ip: xx.xxx.xxx.xx is owned by A Company via a DC. The they have their name allocated to the netname and description when i look up their ip address.

I have my ip xx.xxx.xxx.xx this is me and it currently contains my DC's name throughout when i look it up as the description and netname...

Both are from the same DC however the other company has their name allocated to the ip address and i would like to do the same. Does this require Reverse DNS? It dosent involve domains surely does it?

Reverse DNS And PTR Records

Dec 7, 2008

We recently decided to move all our DNS to a service called DNS Made Easy and also our sever box. We setup what they call Vanity DNS with ns0.domain.com and ns1.domain.com so our clients did not have to change their nameservers.

Our records for all domains are now setup and looks like they are beginning to propagate. Here's where the question is:

IP - 1.1.1.1 is for domain1
IP - 1.1.1.2 is for domain2, domain3 and domain4
IP - 1.1.1.3 is for domain5

All domains have MX records pointing to a either Google or Mailtrust.

what is the best way to setup Reverse DNS and PTR's for this setup and what should we ask our ISP to do for Reverse DNS in this case.

Reverse DNS Lookup ...

May 5, 2008

if I do a reverse lookup on my server's IP it returns a host assigned by the data center. So is this something I should even be managing too or is that always left up to the DC? I run my own DNS for the forward lookup zones.

Also just a technical question, when you do a reverse lookup, how does it know where to look to get the host? I'm not sure I fully understand how these work.

HE.net Deligated Reverse DNS On /27

Jun 26, 2007

I am having trouble pinning down exactly what I am doing wrong with reverse DNS at HE.net on a /27 subnet.

Example host:
65.19.156.29
master1.ipcoast.net

It looks to me like HE.net has properly deligated the subnet:

# dig -x 65.19.156.29 @ns1.he.net.

;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
subnet0.156.19.65.in-addr.arpa. 86400 IN NS ns2.ipcoast.net.
subnet0.156.19.65.in-addr.arpa. 86400 IN NS ns1.ipcoast.net.

And I have the zone file on both of those servers. But still won't resolve from outside coming in.

APF Hostname

Mar 9, 2007

Installed APF on a Fedora Core 6 box, had a problem with one of the modules (Unable to load iptables module (ipt_multiport), aborting) which was sorted by editing the functions file.

But I now get this come up 30 times when I start the firewall:

hostname: Unknown host

Some guides talk about setting a hostname but I dont have a domain name just an IP Address.

Then depending on what guide I look at there are references to different files. So I am not sure which file to edit.

Apache2 Reverse Proxy

Apr 26, 2009

I have a mobile email application (for Zimbra) that is not compatible with HTTPS, only with HTTP.

Is it possible to configure a Reverse Proxy so I can bypass the SSL? Something like this:

[url]<-> REVERSE PROXY <-> [url]

I was able to configure a Reverse Proxy but when it comes to https, something does wrong! here is my vhost config:

Quote:

NameVirtualHost mail.domain.com:*

<VirtualHost *>
ServerName mail
ServerAlias mail.domain.com

ProxyPreserveHost On
ProxyVia full
SSLProxyEngine On
ProxyRequests On

<proxy *>
Order deny,allow
Allow from all
</proxy>

ProxyPass / https://mail.domain.com/
ProxyPassReverse / https://mail.domain.com/

</VirtualHost>

I have all mod_proxy modules (and its sub-mods) load. If this is possible to achieve, I think it's only a manner of configuration lamess.

Have someone configured anything like this before?

No Reverse DNS=lost Email

Jun 11, 2007

I have a client coming to me from another provider. Their biggest problem currently is that many emails either vanish or some get emails while others don't.

I did a check on DNS Reports and found that the domain is on a shared IP address (800+domains) whereas its mail server points to another IP address. Neither of the IP addresses appear blacklisted in any spam databases. The only possibility seems to be the IP address for the web site which does not have have a PTR record (reverse DNS record).

Could this be why the emails are disappearing? They have even configured SPF for the domain etc. I would like to avoid facing a similar situation when the client moves to me.

Hostname Does Not Resolve To Any IP

Oct 31, 2009

I hope your day is going good. I've been trying to fix a problem I had all week. I receive daily email notification that "example.[url]" does not resolve to any IP. However, when in WHM, it already contains Server Main Ip: 208.53.183.125. I've tried a few solutions from the web, but to no avail:

IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email.
The hostname (example.mydomainname.com) resolves to . It should resolve to 208.53.183.125. Please be sure to correct /etc/hosts as well as the 'A' entry in zone file for the domain.

Some are all of these problems can be caused by
/etc/resolv.conf being setup incorrectly. Please check this file if you
believe everything else is correct.

You may be able to automaticly correct this problem by using the
'Add an A entry for your hostname' under 'Dns Functions'
in your Web Host Manager

1) Within WHM, I have the following:

-Add an A entry for your hostname (I only have one listed)
Hostname: example.mydomainname.com
Server Main Ip: 208.53.183.125

-Primary/secondary nameserver
Primary Nameserver: ns1.mydomainname.com (A entry = 208.53.181.26)
Secondary Nameserver: ns2.mydomainname.com (A entry = 208.53.181.27)

-Resolver Configuration
Primary Resolver: 66.90.68.25
Secondary Resolver: 66.90.68.26

-Additional IP my webhost gave me to use:
208.53.181.26 (used in primary name server)
208.53.181.27 (used in secondary name server)
208.53.181.28

-Current DNS Zone listing:
example.com (my website URL that is currently working)
example.mydomainname.com (hostname I made myself that contains the server main IP)
ns1.mydomainname.com (A entry = 208.53.181.26)
ns2.mydomainname.com (A entry = 208.53.181.27)

2) My edit "edit /etc/resolv.conf" contains the following:
Search localdomain
nameserver 66.90.68.25
nameserver 66.90.68.26

Issue: I receive daily email notification that "example.mydomainname.com" does not resolve to any IP. However, when in WHM, it already contains Server Main Ip: 208.53.183.125.

WHM Keep On Asking For A Record For Hostname

Apr 5, 2009

Here are the scenarios :

1. This Dedicated Server don't have main domain name but I use something like hostname.domain.com for the hostname.

2. The nameservers I use are something like ns21.domain.com and ns22.domain.com which I registered it already on my domain registrar.

3. Domain.com is use on other Dedicated server

Are these kind of setup okay? or should I really changed the hostname.domain.com to something else that is hosted on the same server?

Hostname, Nameserver WHM

Oct 2, 2008

I have a dedicated server with WHM 11.23.2. I am in the process of "attempting" to change the hostname for a group of websites and also the nameservers.

Let's say for practical senses that these were the old details:
Hostname: abc.example.com
Nameservers: ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com

I changed in the following sections of WHM..

Server Configuration -> Basic cPanel/WHM Setup -> Hostname to
123.newsite.com

and then...

Networking Setup -> Hostname to 123.newsite.com

and then...

Server Configuration -> Basic cPanel/WHM Setup -> Primary Nameserver to ns1.newsite.com and then...

Server Configuration -> Basic cPanel/WHM Setup -> Secondary Nameserver to ns2.newsite.com.

Then...

Networking Setup -> Nameserver IPs. I deleted the old ones and created the two new ones: ns1.newsite.com and ns2.newsite.com.

I have double checked that this information is still there. Obviously newsite.com is listed as a domain/account. However, example.com was naturally the first one associated with this server.

I performed a server reboot, apache reset etc.

This was three days ago. I assumed it had all changed over. Until I (stupidly) remembered that I hadn't changed the goDaddy information to point to these new nameservers. I panicked thinking all the sites (six of them) would be down. However, they weren't. When I tried to change the nameserver information for a domain in goDaddy it came back with errors... it would only accept ns1.example.com and ns2.example.com.

So, I did a tracert to the IP address of the server and indeed it comes back as abc.example.com. Every domain is associated with that static IP.

I can't even find anywhere where abc.example.com is listed within the WHM. All the new values are listed... so, where is it pulling this from? I thought the reset of the server (as a graceful reboot) would resolve this issue.. it hasn't. I've rebooted twice and awaited the thirty minutes for everything to get back online. No success.
