If I Use My Domain As A Nameserver Can It Still Be The Website
Mar 30, 2009
Basically as the title says I have a domain thedrunkengamer.net that is my main domain and website, I just got a dedicated server and in the startup steps in WHM im at the Nameserver setup screen.
If i go to GoDaddy and register ns1.thedrunkengamer.net and ns2.thedrunkengamer.net as nameservers can I still use www.thedrunkengamer.net as my website?
If so by doing this will it impact the performance of my website at all? Should I register a seperate domain to use for nameservers?

I updated my account from shared to my first VPS account with GoDaddy and they assigned me a I.P.
Now,I choose the options to use GoDaddy NameServers, and i changed the entry there so that my domain name points to my I.P,like this:
Host: @
Point to: <I.P assigned to my domain>
Now,if i type my domain name in the browser,it shows my website but if i click on any link, my I.P address is being shown on the browser instead of my I.P.This is happening for all the links.
what nameservers settings i need to so that this does not happens.

Well, the ns1.NAME.com and ns2.NAME.com is done. It works and links to the right place.
My host name is "dog.NAME.com" and links to the main server IP (example 1.1.1.1). So when i try to do this:
1.1.1.1/~NAME, it redirects me to dog.NAME.com which is good but then dog.NAME.com can't be found.
Server not found is the exact error i get. The IP works. i don't know what i am doing wrong.
My host said they will charge me to fix it, so i am relaying on you guys to save me money.

I've purchased a forum, using a sub-domain name like bbs.mywebsite.com.
All the files will be moved to my new dedicated server.
I'd like to use a new domain name for it, like newname. com
but still to not lose current memebers, still we want to keep bbs.mywebsite.com working as before.
I have 5 IP availble and want to allocate one of them to the new domain name newname .com
================================================== ====
Now, question, what should I do, can some one give me instruction step by step please, to make 2 domains both bbs.mywebsite.com and newname. com working properly. don't want to use redirect.
Now what I can think of is, add newname. com to my account, and change DNS to point to my nameserver, then copy the whole forum under new website. I dont know if this way is correct. Then I don't know how to link the original forum address to the new space.

This is the second time this week that my website was hacked. On the first hack attempt they somehow got into my cpanel and corrupted my license file which I had my host fix. Other than that the only damage done was an html file that replaced my main page. Then today, I find that my website has been further compromised, but by a completely different group. The first hacker was g3n3t1x and this second hack was done by www.turkishdefacerteam.com
Now, the problem is my sites dedicated IP is 72.36.192.150, and my domain name is gamingguilds.net, but if you resolve the domain name, it resolves to 74.53.52.66. I have checked my nameservers and everything is set properly. But the thing I don't get is that when you type in my domain name in a web browser, you see my website. How can it be resolving to the wrong IP and STILL show my website. Also note that when you type in my dedicated IP it would still show my website (before this second attack).
Now after the second attack, my dedicated IP no longer works, I cant get into cpanel using the IP, I cant get into my FTP account, and I get view my website. Yet if you use the domain name to log into cpanel or view the website it works. The strange part here is that I can't get into the FTP using the domain name.
SO, if you go to [url]you see a blank cpanel site, if you go to [url] you get a 404 error, and if you go to www.gamingguilds.net you get my website.

I came across a problematic situation today. Our client pmb.com.my has complained that their domain, when accessed from search engines will go to another site, not theirs. So, perhaps you guys can try this out.
1. Type the URL on the browser directly: [url]
You'll get the real site.
2. Try searching for "pmb malaysia" on Google:
[url]
3. You should see a normal listing for the site as the 1st result. Try clicking that link.
4. In our checks, it will go to a landing page (black bankground), and will redirect to an adult site.
5. You get this landing page too when you click the link to the site in step 1.
Appreciate if more people can try this out and post your findings here. I've contacted the RZ (site hosted there), and they said it is an issue with Google's cache. Not sure I buy that.

I've recently opened an account at a shared webhosting, cPanel managed. I've assigned it the main domain name I plan to use, but currently that domain points to another webhosting.
Before I proceed with the change of nameservers and make the definitive switch from the old to the new host, is there any way I can privately preview my site (100% HTML) from the new host? I'd like to ensure it's working OK before making the jump.
I've tried to add an entry to my local HOSTS file assigning my domain to the new host IP, but I only get a default page from the new server.

I would like to create an SSL website for parts of my domain. I have a few VPS's one running cPanel, the others running just Webmin.
Now I have managed to install SSL as I can login to WHM/cPanel using the secure port fine. Also I have installed SSL on the Webmin VPS's as I followed www.webmin.com/ssl.html which tells you how.
However I would like to get sections of my website secure i.e secure.mydomain.com would be HTTPS, and the rest of the site just normal HTTP.

1) I use DNSMadeEasy for a couple of my important domains so I can utilize their failover service.
2) I use my own nameservers for everyone else.
At my register (GoDaddy) I've added host entries to my domain (let's call it host.com) for ALL of my nameservers: DNSMadeEasy and mine. For example here are my host entries:
1) nsdme0.host.com = 55.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
2) nsdme1.host.com = 56.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
3) nsdme2.host.com = 57.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
4) nsdme3.host.com = 58.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
5) nsdme4.host.com = 59.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
6) ns1.host.com = 60.55.55.55 (mine)
7) ns2.host.com = 61.55.55.55 (mine)
At the register I've then configured host.com to use the first five nameservers for itself, the DNSMadeEasy nameservers.
For less critical sites that I host I simply point them to ns1.host.com and ns2.host.com, my nameservers.
Now, here's the twist. If I use dig to look up www.host.com I get:
[root@lax1 ~]# dig +trace www.host.com
; <<>> DiG 9.3.3rc2 <<>> +trace www.host.com

BUT, if I lookup the nameserver (ns1.host.com) I get:
Code:

;; Received 241 bytes from 192.54.112.30#53(H.GTLD-SERVERS.net) in 151 ms
What I've realized is that the actual IP addresses for nameserver host entries come from a higher level server than my own, in this case H.GTLD-SERVERS.net. I guess this makes sense but I just hadn't realized it before. It looks like I don't even need to have record entries in my DNS records for the host nameservers.
Now for the question. Can I:
1) Remove my custom host nameserver entries from my register.
2) Add entries in my DNSMadeEasy records to specify the location of ns1.host.com and ns2.host.com.
3) Use the failover provided by DNSMadeEasy to also fail-over my DNS entries for my nameservers?
I know this would require one more hop if it works but it would allow me to provide failover ability to fifty domains without having to purchase the extra domains at DNSMadeEasy.

If I type google.com in my address bar, it forwards me to www.google.com. This is not happening for my website right now. I think its a good idea to do this, since then search engines will have only 1 main URL for the website to index.
My question is:
How do I implement this? I think this may involve mucking with CNAME settings...

I have a domain hosted at godaddy.com and I decided to go with VPS hosting elsewhere. I have changed the nameservers to [url]and [url]at godaddy. I set up the reseller account in WHM but the nameservers point to something other than [url]I am trying to change them to the correct nameservers by using the "Nameserver IP Assigment" tool but it is taking literally forever. Is this normal?
Should I have to wait until it assigns an IP address to use the correct nameserver?

I just moved my site from a shared host to a VPS with PhotonVPS.
I forwarded the name servers at my registrar, GoDaddy.
However, when I look at my INTODNS report, I am getting all sorts of nameserver errors:
[url]
Is this normal while the changes propogate? Or did I mess something up, because I also cannot access my VPS cpanel now.

Have you come across this problem where you change the NameServer IP in '/etc/nameserverips' but the change does not reflect , instead it reverts to the old IP?
Doing the following fixed the issue for me.

Say a person has a domain called mydomain.com
and this domain mydomain.com is hosted from a nameserver called ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com
will this mean that:
the person who own mydomain.com owned his/her own webhost server?
and is that what is being called dedicated server? where I already did some research that would mean the whole server is owned by the 1 person/domain only?
I have been asking question to myself quite sometime now.. and hoping that this forum could help me in understanding this matter.

I just took out a VPS hosting plan with Hostican, but I'm a bit confused about whether I followed their instructions properly... please be patient
Their instructions said this:
Quote:
Please note that on our network a VPS is like your own private space on the network to work from. This is why we provide your account with two dedicated IP addresses that you will need to use to register your name servers with. Please view the below name servers and IP addresses that you should use to register them.
ns1.mydomain.com <==> xx.xx.xx.xx
ns2.mydomain.com <==> xx.xx.xx.xx
Now all my domains are registered with 1&1, who don't provide an option for creating private nameservers in their control panel. So, I created two subdomains (ns1 and ns2.mydomain.com) and then created A records for ns1 and ns2, pointing to the IPs supplied by Hostican. Then I changed the nameserver for my domains to ns1 and ns2.mydomain.com
After a couple of days, this seems to have worked - domains point to new VPS webspace and emails working. I'm worried whether I did this properly though, or whether I'm going to get problems in future with reverse dns and stuff?

I did ping the nameservers,
ns1.mydomain.com [130.74.135.102]
ns2.mydomain.com [66.21.114.11]
And this is when I added a new domain in Cpanel.
Using nameservers with the following IPs: 66.21.113.11,66.21.114.11 Bind reconfiguring on serverprovider using rndc
Created DNS entry for mydomain.com
Should it really be 2 different nameserver IPs?
