Ubuntu Server Or Debian

Jul 9, 2008

I've just ordered a dedicated server with Ubuntu server, but they've come back to me to say that they've had trouble installing Ubuntu server on these particular servers.

As an alternative, they're offering to install Debian. My concern is that I come from a windows background and have spent the last month reading and playing with Ubuntu Server in vmware. I'll be running a small handful of sites on the server and will rely on the apt-get and package installer in webmin to get things set up and for administration. I'll dabble in the shell a little, but only when needed.

Should I go with a different host that can offer Ubuntu, or will I be okay with Debian?

Advantage Debian 64 Versus Regular Debian

Oct 9, 2008

I just ordered a server which has that setup:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Dual Core
8MB RAM
2x750GB RAID 1 HD

Now I wanna run it with DirectAdmin, but obviously DirectAdmin doesn´t support the Debian 64 which is installed but only 32 bit Debian.

Now I wonder wether I could setup a Debian 32 as well on that system and if yes, wether it would give me a deficit in Performance?

Or would you rather go with CentOS 64 which Directadmin supports?

Ubuntu VPN Tunnel Between 2 Ubuntu Servers

Both will be in seperate datacentres but I'd like a secure tunnel so I can setup jobs to backup to one another.

This has to be done on the server level and cannot be done at the router/firewall as I do not have access to this kit.

Windows Server 2003 X86 Or Ubuntu 9.04 X64

Apr 28, 2009

The past week I've been trying to answer the hardest question. I'm an expert windows user and a Novice Linux user.

I have a server built and ready for an operating system, this will be a development server for database and web development. It will also likely turn into an encrypted file server as well.

I do not plan on doing much else other then that.

Is it worth it to struggle through and learn the Linux command line or should I go for Windows Server something I am more familiar with?

I've considered VMware although I have "Fake Raid" and ESXi does not see my Raid-1 setup.

Setting Up My First Ever Debian Dedi Server

I just purchased a Debian server with a plesk control panel. It is suppose to be online within 24 hours. I have no idea how to set it up because so far I have only used shared hosts.

I need to know the following

1. how do I create the httpdocs/public_html folder

2. is it possible to FTP? If not what can I use for file uploading?

3. How do I setup a MySQl database? Is it possible to do this using plesk control panel? (Shared hosting can do this through plesk)

4. How do I setup my domain name servers? through plesk?

Ubuntu Server Edition Compared To CentOS

Aug 23, 2008

I asked this question before in the past and I still have to ask it: has anyone used both Ubuntu Server Edition and CentOS? I would like to compare both operating system, in terms of speed, performance, security, and stability.

I have decided to build my new server and use Ubuntu Server Edition 64-bit operating system after using CentOS 64-bit operating system for a bit over a year now.

The reason why I have chosen to use Ubuntu Server Edition is because of the operating system's fabulous reputation among desktop PC users, and its large and helpful support community.

Support is what I need most, and Ubuntu seems to have it. I also am not the best with Linux yet, so it will definitely be needed. Ubuntu also seems to update its software faster than other operating systems.

I hope my decision to switch from CentOS 64-bit to Ubuntu Server Edition 64-bit will not be in vain.

Can anyone compare these two 64-bit operating systems and possibly link me to some reviews, comparisons, and/or benchmark results?

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Server Transfer - Ubuntu 12 To 14

Feb 10, 2015

I am trying to transfer Plesk 12.0.18#34 from an Ubuntu 12 server to an Ubuntu 14 server.

Using the transfer manager, I got these warnings:

The following Apache modules are not installed on the destination server: authz_default. Please install and enable these modules to prevent possible problems. The following Apache modules are disabled on the destination server: roxy_http,proxy_html,proxy,authz_groupfile,reqtimeout. Please enable these modules to prevent possible problems. The php_version 5.3 is not available on the destination server. Instead, Plesk will use the following version: 5.5. To use the same php_version as on the source server, you should turn on or install it on the destination server. 3 domain(s) will be affected.

I am a bit puzzled by the authz_default warning as it is not supported anymore on Apache 2.4.

If I override and launch the transfer, I get these errors:

PHP Notice: Trying to get property of non-object; File: /opt/psa/admin/plib/backup/Conflicts/PleskDataManager.php, Line: 173

how to install Ubuntu (either 7.10 or 8.04) as a XEN domU guest on a CentOS 5 / Fedora Core 8 XEN dom0 server?

I have tried installing Ubuntu as a fully virtualized guest, but the Ubuntu CD doesn't even bootup. I get the Linux bootloader, and that's it,it doesn't continue to boot. Odd.

When trying to install a Paravirtualized guest, I had to use the debootstrap method, but can't get it to boot up.

How To Run PHP 4 And 5 In Ubuntu Without CGI

Jun 21, 2007

When we chose Symfony to implement [url], PHP 5 was needed but we only had PHP 4 installed in our Ubuntu hosting servers. We couldn¡¯t just migrate everyone to PHP 5 since some of client¡¯s applications were incompatible with PHP 5. Some tutorials were found online explaining how to run PHP 4 and PHP 5 simultaneously such as [url] and [url]but they all used CGI. As you probably know, CGI is not scalable and we needed to scale in PHP4 and PHP5 since we needed to server millions of hits in both configurations. The following are additional the requirements we had:

1. Run Apache

2. Use mod_php for both PHP versions.

3. Run eAccelerator with both PHP versions.

4. Use as many Ubuntu packages as possible to ease maintenance issues and easily deploy on multiple servers.

5. Use Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS

The solution we came up with was to run Apache 2 with PHP 5 and run Apache 1 with PHP 4 on separate IPs. Ubuntu comes already with these packages. The only package we had to compile was eAccelerator. The following lists the steps taken to get this setup:

Apache 2 with PHP 5

* apt-get install apache2 libapache2-mod-php5 php5 php5-cli php5-curl php5-gd php5-mysql php5-dev make php5-mcrypt php5-imap

Php.ini On Ubuntu Is Confusing Me

Mar 11, 2009

I am all too familiar with php on my win box but now am working on Linux.

the extension_dir is commented out (??) however CURL does work but there is nothing about CURL in php.ini. I cant find any php.so files.

Also the php.ini file lives in /etc/php5/apache2

Does this look like a standard install? Where do the .so files live?

Ultimatly I want to install Turck MMCache which requires some extensions and when ever I try to do phpize there is the error message
Cannot find config.m4 (google is not helping solve the problem)

apt-get install m4 says I have the latest version.

phpize is a shortcut in usr/bin that points to etc/alternatives/phpize which in turn is a shortcut to usr/bin/phpize5

Install Required software

NX server needs ssh and some libraries to run. These packages are normally not installed during the basic installation process.Use the following comamnd to install

#aptitude libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2 ssh

Install Free NX Server in Debian Etch

First you need to download the .deb packages using the follwoing commands
i did the three steps..

Now you need to install .deb packages in the following order this is very important

#dpkg -i nxclient_2.1.0-17_i386.deb

#dpkg -i nxnode_2.1.0-22_i386.deb

#dpkg -i nxserver_2.1.0-22_i386.deb

If you get any errors use the following comamnd to fix

#apt-get -f install

Now you need to make sure ssh and nx servers are running if not start with the following commands

#/etc/init.d/ssh start

#/etc/init.d/nxserver start
--------------------
but the problem is i cannot connect to the nx .
i installed the program on windows but what is the username and password should i use? i tried to use the root but it said that the user root cannot be used.
