View 8 RepliesI wanted to list down all files owned by 'root' inside /home directory and all users directory inside /home/users including subfolders and everything!
the command below works but only works when executed within the working directory.
ls -l | awk '{print $3" " $9}' | grep root
Does anyone knows how on Linux (SuSE) remove files ending with (lets say) *.1.0.1
when I try rm *.a.1
it outputs - to many arguments if rm test.* - everything is fine.
nginx will look for web files under /usr/local/nginx/html. However, I want to put my website files under /home/public_html, is that possible with nginx? I can not find many things about nginx conf file explanation,

I get an e-mail everyday from my server's backup script telling me what new or changed files it found. Yesterday this summary was massive, and it showed new or changed files in these directories:
/proc
and
/home/virtfs
The type of files it contains:
"/home/virtfs/[username]/proc/140/task/140/exe"
"/home/virtfs/[username]/proc/139/exe"
"/home/virtfs/[username]/proc/139/task/139/exe"
"/home/virtfs/[username]/proc/227/exe"
"/home/virtfs/[username]/proc/227/task/227/exe"
"/home/virtfs/[username]/proc/374/exe"
The /home/virtfs directory is something I haven't seen before, and it contained two directories belonging to two accounts on the server.
Does anyone know why these directories would be created or what they are for? The bit of reading I've done on this so far mentions that these directories will be created as a result of jailed SSH, but neither of those two accounts have ever had jailed SSH enabled.
On Linux, what is the command that can show me all of the files in subdirectories with Full Path? For ex, I am looking for something like;
./cgi-bin/library/templates/example.html
I tried ls -alR, but it only show me single file name with each divided section of subdirectories....Should I use some other command or build a script for this?
to found all of index.html files in my /home directory.
how can I found these files?
like this:
/home/a/public_html/index.html
/home/a/public_html/folder/index.html
/home/c/index.html
I have recently switched from Ubuntu to Mint because I would like to enjoy out of the box functionality. I installed Apache, PHP and Mysql. When I go to localhost, the page displays correctly indicating that the server is functioning. In /var/www/html I created devPages. In devPages I created a symlink to a directory in my home directory where I keep all of my html/php files.
When I point my browser to http://localhost/devPages/1/ I get "You don't have permission to access /devPages/1/ on this server". This appears to be a permissions/ownership issue. I don't want to change the permissions for the directory or files in the home directory because they are set to work properly on my production server. Is there a way to get apache to accept files in my home directory?
I have set owner and group for devPages and the symlink to www-data. Set permissions to 755 for devPages.
By the way, under Ubuntu, I have always used a symlink and it always worked without any issues.
I have a WP online shop using WP E-commerce plugin 3.8.9 together with the SEO Yoast plugin. My problem in that when exploring the product URLs ending with / in google webmaster tools, it displays 404. But the same URL without / is found and ok. I must day that both URLs show up correctly in browsers and the non / version is redirected to the one ending in /.Here is my .htaccess:
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>
I could solve this problem by setting a redirect to non / URLs instead.
I need to clean up the .spamassassin directory for all the accounts on the server. The Bayes files are getting too big and causing mail handling issues.
How would I do that?
I assume this won't work - and don't want to try it until I hear a little feedback:
rm -f /home/*/.spamassassin/*bayes*
Basically, I need a command that will do what the above command looks like it would do - I just don't think the wildcards will work in that manner, and don't want to try it for fear of deleting items outside of the .spamassassin directory.
I'm running CentOS 5.3.x with cPanel/WHM - if it matters...
And feel free to suggest other spam blocking software - but we've gotten rather good at tweaking SA to get the job done. Just this annoyance of the bayes files growing continuously is a pain sometimes...
I couldn't keep my mouth shut (technically fingers). A customer wanted to upgrade servers and he needed a way to move the data across. Since I don't allow hard drives to be swapped, they have to do it manually all by themselves. I generally allow up-to 4 days for them to transfer data and make DNS changes, etc. But this time, I offered help! I agreed to move the data (darn me) and it just came out of me, involuntarily.
God knows what just happened... but in a positive way, customer is extremely happy!
So...
Both servers are on cPanel - with root access (duh)
200 odd files which total to 25 GB
1 database about 100 MB in size (no biggie)
I was planning on using one of my Windows 2003 servers (via remote desktop) to download the 25 GB and upload the 25 GB, but that sounds like a waste of resources and time.
i was just wondering can we build our own pc and send it to a data center?
I was planning on just building a cheap pc with maybe an xp3000+, 512mb of ram and stack in 2TB worth of HDD space on it, then just pay for the rack space and the b/w
But, is this possible, is a normal midi tower case to big for this?
one of my client have an in-house subscriber list with 30000 email build with their offline promotional campaign. They need to send 4 to 5 email in a month and the list might expand to 60000 in a year.
they are using a mailing program to schedule the mailing at 250 email per hour as according to the limit of their ISP and they are looking for a better solution.
i want to suggest them taking a VPS but i'm new to VPS so i'm here to looking for suggestion that i can recommend to my client.
Does anyone know why companies like Level3/Yipes/Abovenet/Global Crossing don't make their on-net building list available readily? Cogent/Zayo/etc have it listed right on their website....Zayo even gives you this downloadable KMZ file for Google Earth.
I'm working with a few clients who run their own data center/web hosting facilities and are looking at new spaces in various Class A office buildings. Obviously, I can go around and call all the providers, but it becomes a voicemail game.
Anyone got a list of available VPS platforms, perhaps with feedback? I run Plesk so I was going to run with Virtuozzo but I see Parallels don't want to give us pricing and I don't have time for that kind of rubbish. What alternatives are there?

VPS newbie question: I would like to set a limit on emails for all domains but mine to some number per hour, but I would like mine to be unlimited. I'm not going to be sending a lot, but, when necessary, they will need to go fast. So far, the only way I have figured out how to keep unlimited for me is to not set a throttle at all and allow Mailman only on admin domains. If any user has to have lists, then I can authorize it then and maybe keep tabs on it.(There's probably a lot better way to say that, but I'm tired :-)
Can anyone give me a list of some of the top VPS providers?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI'm currently trying to gather a list of Xen VPS Prviders, maybe you can help me out making it a little bit longer?
Listed here in no particular order:

xeneurope
gplhost
serveraxis

crucial paradgim

I know there are a lot more to it. But could you help me out making it longer?
root@server [~]# replace ns3.host.com ns1.host.com -- /var/named/*

How can I work past this?
Using Centos 4.5 / cpanel
I have a client who is interested in settin up a paying mailing list for a website I built for him.
I figured since he doesn't want to spend $3000 for a full CMS, I would just do things manually.
A customer would pay through Paypal. He would then check PayPal for any new subscribers dailys, add them if new, and then send out his newsletter daily to the people who have paid.
In the mailing list software, there would be a box for how many days this person would be allowed to be sent an e-mail and then once his subscription was up, an e-mail would be sent out (the last part is optional).
Does anyone have any insight of a program/script that would work in this manner? Or maybe a decently cheap script that they know of? This site is a non-profit, donation site.
I understand the risks of not using a datacenter, but for a smallish site to which uptime isn't key, is it possible to get server-quality bandwidth to my house? (No I don't mean like Gigabit, I mean like upwards of 5mbps)? I'd really like to maintain my own server (probably build one).
I live in Milwaukee, so colocation is, AFAIK, out. And while I can save up for and buy a computer every few years, I cannot sustain $80/month. (I am a middle school student. My income isn't exactly regular.)
So the question... can I get an ISP to let me run a server at decent speeds out of my house? Would its costs exceed colocation or that of a dedicated server?
Have had my support ticket open for over a week now, have added a few exta replies to it, no response from them. They haven't been on MSN either.

to replace the current router/firewall/gateway on my home LAN with a lower-end PC running pfSense. (A FreeBSD-based distro with a web GUI for managing pf and the like.)
Since the system will be passing all the network traffic anyway, I'm interested in the possibility of having it watch for anything suspicious. Snort is the obvious choice: I want it to spot incoming/outgoing suspicious network activity.
What I wonder, though, is if there is really a lot of benefit to running this on a home LAN? If it was a big corporate network, I could see wanting it to keep an eye on things, but we only have a handful of machines, and they're all pretty secure.
It'd be running on a ~1 GHz PC with 512 MB RAM... Given that the machine would already be acting as firewall/router, caching DNS server, and running PHP/Apache for the management interface / graph generation, is piling Snort on top of that asking for trouble?
I'm just wondering what the practicalities and problems might be in setting up a web server from home. At the moment we have a 2Mb cable connection but our provider offers a 20Mb connection.
Would it be possible to set up a small hosting business from home with such a connection?
Recently I bought a static IP from an ISP and trying to setup so that I can enable my home PC as a web server and can be accessible thru internet.
I wanted to setup with Apache Server. I have windows vista OS installed. Please point me where I can find some documentation on web server setup and configuring static IP address, firewall setup, etc.,
