Home Web Server
I'm just wondering what the practicalities and problems might be in setting up a web server from home. At the moment we have a 2Mb cable connection but our provider offers a 20Mb connection.
Would it be possible to set up a small hosting business from home with such a connection?

Which OS For Home Web Server
I am currently leasing a VPS and the kbps upload rate is below my upload rate at home, so I am going to save 50 bucks/ month and move it to home. I plan on using an older dell desktop with 512mb ram. I would like to use this also as sorta a sync host between my laptop and desktop. I would like to be able to sync certain folders and files which would be stored on the server. I also obviously need to have ftp access, smtp (no knowledge of this area), mysql, php, etc. My big question is which OS should I use? I have fiddled around had a local copy of my site working on my main desktop in windows using apache. Should I stick with windows or would I be better served using a linux distro such as ubuntu? I currently have a static IP address at home. How do I handle the nameservers? Another thing is how easily can I manage things like emails and subdomains?

Web Server At Home--Basic Concepts
I tried installing Apache and, later on, Wampserver. I also tried looking up this topic in Build Your Own Database Driven Web Site, Using PHP and MySQL. My goal is to see, on my home computer, how my new Web pages would look as I work on them, and that includes things like includes, which can't be seen on a regular home computer (mine is Vista). Later on, I also expect to play around a lot with PHP. OK, how am I supposed to do this? Is there a folder on my home computer where these files should be? Do I need to install them on another computer on my home LAN? I just don't get these first basic steps; I don't know what to look for.

Home Web Server Set Up, Relative Paths Not Working
I've had a web server set up for a while at home to do some testing. I can view the site locally using my IP but all relative paths of CSS or images on the html page (eg /something/title.gif) don't show up. Bizarrely, if I go to[url], they appear! Anyone know what the issue may be? The "DocumentRoot" value in Apache conf is pointing to the correct folder.

Web Hosting From Home
I already have a web server hosting around 70 web sites with FastHosts who charge me around £350 per month. I am a one man band and looking to cut monthly costs. On my web server with FastHosts, I have around 6 IP addresses all used for specific purposes such as SSL and public web sites and all works just fine. I have just purchased a fast 8mb BT Network Business broadband connection at home along with 13 static IP addresses and built an office on my land that is secure. I want to host my own servers here on the premises that gives my clients the same services they currently get but without me having to pay £350 per month. BT now tell me that the router they provided cannot route more than 1 IP address to the same machine. The router can only route 1 IP address to 1 PC. This means to achive what I already have would mean purchasing several servers and hosting clients web sites on an individual server. I have a Windows 2003 server that I know can host all the sites I need including secure and public from one machine. I also know that each secure web site requires it's own IP address and I have those from BT. Have you any ideas if there are any routers out there that work on broadband connections that can forward more than 1 IP address to the same computer and still work just fine with the BT set-up that I have?

Web Hosting @ Home
I wanted to host a website from home and - registered domain with godaddy.com - created account with everydns.net and updated the nameserver information at godaddy - My webserver is Apache Http server and I have a router between my system and ISP's modem, so i did the port forwarding and also opened the port to public. I have also used a port other than 80 because I thought my ISP might block port 80. My problem is i can access my webpages from my home machine(server) but not from my office machine. one interesting note is my ISP is COX and i have asked my friend who also has COX to check the site and He was able to access my website. I checked checkdnsDOTnet and nothing seem to be a problem and i have also checked the port at canyouseemeDOTorg and the port seems to be open. I used DOT to indicate '.' , because I am not allowed to link URLs

Home Server ...
I understand the risks of not using a datacenter, but for a smallish site to which uptime isn't key, is it possible to get server-quality bandwidth to my house? (No I don't mean like Gigabit, I mean like upwards of 5mbps)? I'd really like to maintain my own server (probably build one). I live in Milwaukee, so colocation is, AFAIK, out. And while I can save up for and buy a computer every few years, I cannot sustain $80/month. (I am a middle school student. My income isn't exactly regular.) So the question... can I get an ISP to let me run a server at decent speeds out of my house? Would its costs exceed colocation or that of a dedicated server?

Setting Up My Own Server At Home
So I have designed some software for my brother who owns a business and needed a website to manage his clients and send emails to them and stuff. Right now we are using Hostmonster, which has been pretty good so far. He was talking to me how it would be nice to be able to email the website and have the site automatically store the information in these emails into a database for information regarding his clients, which I know is possible, but not on a shared host it seems. I have tested my own email receiving script on a test server on my computer and it works fine. So we are continually finding our limits with a shared host. We have been looking into dedicated hosting, but as you all know its quite a price jump to go from $7 a month to $200+. I got thinking and remembered that my dad has always had a business web plan from our ISP at home (cause he likes fast internet), which according to there website serves 1Mbps upload speed. We also have 2-3 old computers sitting at home that we don't use anymore (2)2ghz pentium 4 Dells and a 3.0ghz+ Pentium 4 HP. I was thinking we could probably just plug one of those into the router, forward some ports and have our own server up and running. For now we would only host this software I made for my bro, which is used by only 4 people, and that's not even at the same time usually. So there is very little load to deal with. But in the future we may put a few other sites that we have in mind which would use PHP and MySQL quite a bit. I was just curious what some of your opinions were on creating a home server. I was looking at Ubuntu Server edition as a possibility, or XAMPP since all my machines are Windows XP. One machine doesn't work cause the hard drive is out, so if I use that I would probably have to put Ubuntu on it. Any suggestions on good server software would be great! I believe the business web plan my dad has also comes with a static IP as well, so that will help. Look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Does anyone run a server from their house? What kind of internet connection do you have? I'm guessing most people don't do this because they find out it cost way to much to get a special connection ran to their house. Colocation might be the only way to go.

Any Security Risks With Setting Up Server On Home Network
Any security risks with setting up server on home network? I would like to set up a computer running linux or xp as a computer on our home network. We have about 3 other computers on the same network. My network manager says that it would be a security risk to the other computers on the network if I were to have the server running on the network. The server would be connected to a netgear wireless router and I would have ports 80 and 21 opened just for the internal ip address of the server. (for example, the server is on 192.168.0.3, and I had just the two ports open for it, while there were computers on 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.4). The netgear router has a firewall built into it. Each of the other computers on the network have software firewalls. I would not have a firewall on the server, and I really don't care if someone hacks it. So, what at worst could happen? Would the other computers be at risk? If you are a professional, I want your opinion also.

Web Hosting On Same Server As Game Server
Does a typical LAMP setup for a high enough traffic site(s) take enough resources to affect the performance of a game server? (we'll say 1million page views per day) I'm speaking of say, 2MB of ram, dual xeon 2.8 type machine, with IDE drives. Nothing too fancy. 1 milion page views per day may be pushing it, so what about say, 200 per day? Just wondering if anyone has a setup like this and how it fairs out at the game server end. I'm thinking of moving my websites over to my game server + add more sites over time, but don't want it to lag the game. I know as a fact bandwidth would not be the issue, I'm thinking more ram/cpu. The game I host (Ultima Online) uses very little bandwidth with even 30+ people online. I use less then 1% of my link capacity at most times. I've seen it spike to 5% and that's most likely when I was downloading data.

Network Web Server And Database Server Together

Beta is taking over alphas database duties. We have a Sonicwall router/firewall as our main connection access point. I am trying to decicde if we should simply connect alpha and beta together locally via a gigabit crossover cable, or if I should connect beta into our sonicwall router/firewall. Beta does not need to be outside accessible at all. So if I connect beta to the sonicwall I simply would not open any ports. What do you guys think is best for performance and the overall right way to do it.

Reason I ask is beacause I've found and excellent deal for a DB server and would like to keep my current server for the front end..

How To Setup A WEB Server Which Talks With DB A Server
I have been shooting away a lot of questions on these forums lately, but you guys have been very helpful. Thanks. My problem is this. We are going to get rackspace. Then we are going to purchase two servers. The first (WEB) is a httpd, dns, ftp, smtp, pop3 server. The second (DB) is purely a database server which will run mysql and mssql. The first server (WEB) runs a asp/php applications that need to connect and talk with the database (DB) server. I was thinking of only connection the WEB server to the physical internet through the co-location drop. Then connecting the WEB and DB server directly via a CAT6 cable. Both servers will have gigabit NIC cards. Then in theory in the asp/php applications all I have to do, is point them to the local ip address of the DB server as this should work. Is this a good solution? Will speed be an issue, the delay from talking to the WEB server and talking to the DB server? I was thinking this is more secure, because the WEB server is the only machine physically connected to the internet, the DB server is not. Though, is it true, if hackers compromise the web server, they then would be able to compromise the DB server as well via the WEB server? I am open to suggestions though, and better ways of setting this up.

Using A Second Web Server
in a site to help save some Ram: Use a 2nd server You can use a tiny, lightning fast server to handle static documents & images, and pass any more complicated requests on to Apache on the same machine. This way Apache won't tie up its multi-megabyte processes serving simple streams of bytes. You can have Apache only get used, for example, when a php script needs to be executed. is this Good? if yes how could it be done, having apache and another one at the same time

we have 2 servers at different data centres we have successfully managed to have 2 A names that point to 2 different ip's/data centres so if we switch one server off the other is there seamlessly which wouldn't be a problem and is ideal for a website that doesn't rely on a database because you cant guarantee what server you will be viewing, so we need to find a way of having normal mysql replication (master/slave) on both servers but have the slave server hidden/disabled until the master server goes down then have the slave server come to life someway,

Web Server Has Been Attacked
Server info: Windows 2003 box Dedicated server currently hosted at the planet. Problem: It would appear there has been a security breach into the server recently. This morning we cleared off a Trojan, and also a new user that had been created on the server. All of our websites we host (around 200) had been affected. Almost every file had new javascript or links to an .swf, they load in iframes and are very malicious, actually giving any vistor to the site a virus. I tracked down the embed code that I found in most files appended to the end of each file. Below shows up in most .asp, .cfm, .html files (no spaces, just can't paste a url in here yet)... <scRipT s rc=[url] <scRipT sr c=[url] Below shows up any any .js file (no spaces, just can't paste a url in here yet)... document.writeln ("<script sr c=[url] document.writeln ("<script sr c=[url] So I got a script that opens up every file looking for this code and stripping it out. Seemed to work at first, but now all the sites have been rewritten again..... and again. So obviously something is overwriting this.

Web Server Logging
Firstly this question is not related to running a web hosting business, but to dedicated servers hosting our own websites. I was just wondering, other than security reasons, what is the importance (if any) of keeping Apache/WWW logs? Are there legal reasons? If it is best to keep Apache logs, how should we go about this? If we don't look after them properly there will be massive amounts of logs being kept - what is the best way to store them? I know they can be "rolled over" and kept for a certain amount of time, which is the best utility to do this? The OS is Linux (CentOS) and the web servers are Apache and Lighttpd. and should proxy/gateway/cache server logs be kept?
