Hostgator Dedicated Servers
May 5, 2008
Has anyone used Hostgator for dedicated servers? Their packages look like great value for money, with cpanel, WHM and even free WHMCS licence all in for $174 a month. Any reviews would be appreciated before I take the plunge.

I recently moved my sites to HostGator's basic server and their service totally shocked me.
It's crazy. I've been around for some time and have used MANY dedicated servers and collocation service providers.
The level of service I was getting from HostGator caught me off guard, in a very good way.
First, I got the server setup within 24 hours of ordering, I got the server log in details and to my surprised HostGator was THE FIRST company who actually done their initial server configuration very properly.
I noticed it right away by seeing the initial server's root password which are using some 128 random string.
This alone shows they are managing their servers seriously, unlike some providers which gives my initial root passwords as myname3893 something like that, that's just plain crazy.
Secondly, I had some issues with EasyApache not doing update properly. I went to Live Chat right away, talked to their tech support and the guy tried to check what was going on and doesn't know how to fix it. Believe me, if I didn't know how to fix that, I am sure it requires advanced sysadmin attention.
I was expecting the issue to be solved in a day or two, but to my surprise it was solved within a few hours of my live chat session. Hmmm that is impressive.
Second case, I was getting confused on why my /usr partition keep getting full all the time. I tried checking apache logs and stuff, cleared all logs and it is still full.
Again, I went to live chat, the same thing happened, but this time it was solved on the spot.
The live chat guy had to ask a sysadmin, but it was solved on the spot and I only waited for 5 minutes while it was being worked on.
Before my eyes, the disk space was freed, and it was from an unusual log file piling up, they even let me know the exact problem that was causing it to prevent this to happen in the future.
It's just crazy, I know HG has an outstanding reputation on their shared hosting customer service, but I totally did not expect the same level of instantaneous service also applies to their dedicated server line.
For those of you who are looking for a dedicated server FOR HOSTING PURPOSES, like to sell web hosting, I highly recommend HostGator way beyond any other server provider.
Because with HG you not only get the server, but along with their experiences doing shared hosting, the last thing you should be concern about is your server not properly configured for shared hosting.
Because with HG's server, their boxes seems to be highly configured for hosting environment, out of the box.
Just amazing, rock on HG, with the way things are, I do think it is very possible for them to be one of the major players in the dedicated sector.
Beware other providers, keep an eye of your customer service response time and solution time, before a big gator eats up your clients

I had posted the review a week back but for some reason everything went bazook with WHT.
I lost all my posts but am making an attempt to write the review again of my exp with HG.
Well, I had been with these guys for close to 14 months. I never knew there was bright world beyond HG for dedicated server untill I came to WHT. I had taken a xeon 2.4 with 2 gb ram for $219 everything was fine untill the server started giving me problems off late. It was supposed to be a managed server but these guys had just no clue whatso ever on any kinda problem. The took like close to 12 hours just to figure out the problem which was an issue with fan.
Imagine they were putting the blame game on me till they figured out it was a problem with the hardware(fan). When I went to claim refund for meeting the SLA, they told me that it was my fault and the onus was on me to ensure the server is up and running. WTF? How do you expect me find and why do you think I took managed service if the onus was on me to make sure the server is up and running.
That wasn't the end of my horror story. I don't remember the number of times I had to suffer with restarting the Apache / Mysql and downtime and when I did goto them, they said my RAM usage is too much. Hmmm when I further digged out and I felt cheated when I found out that they gave me a cheap DDR-200 MHZ RAM which is way outdated technology. I was like WTF? All those problems were because of that Cheap DDR-200 MHZ RAM for which they were charging me a bomb.
Imagine they gave me a trash Hardware and charging me a bomb for that crap and they kept blaming me for it.
I scrapped my Xeon 2.8 to Q9550 for a bit more but it was worth it.

Can you review hostgator dedicated server...?

I have several small websites that I currently host with HostGator without any issues (although I wish customer service was better).
The websites are very small and currently don't require any significant disk space or bandwidth requirements (we currently have less than 10.000 visitors every month).
The problem I currently have is that these websites were all set up in different accounts which are a pain to manage and probably more expensive than required.
We plan to grow both in number of websites and bandwidth capacity requirements in the near future.
I have come to two options: Stay with Hostgator and get a reseller account( http://www.hostgator.com/resellers<dot>shtml ), or switch to MediaTemple and get a dedicated-virtual account ( http://www.mediatemple<dot>net/webhosting/dv/ ) (I have heard good things about MediaTemple).
Can you guys suggest which option would be better? Or a different one? Below are the characteristics I'm looking at.
Price - As long as it’s within market standards according to service I don't mind paying more for a better service. It is important that payment is easy from outside the US. Customer service - fast, effective, available 24x7. Ease of use / reseller - Easy to maintain several independent websites in a single plan. A plus if they have a good reseller setup.
Long term company stability and management - I wouldn’t like the company to disappear or be inconsistent in its business practices. I would like to avoid making changes in hosting provider.
Scalability - We shoot to grow and develop additional businesses that require more capacity. Don't want to change later of host provider when this happens.
Security - Known reliability of external attacks and good backup model Known reliability running the latest version of Drupal and Expression Engine.

This is first time i am writing about hostgator using there service since 4 years.
I have 3 dedicated servers purchased with them within last 6 months and orderd for 4th server on 31st Aug 08. And now as business is growing i will need more and more servers every 2- 3 month. But its seems hostgator is not interested in business as they had already grown now. Even they don't care of their loyal customers who are them with years.
On 3rd day of orderd they told me my server will be deliverd within next 24 hours and on 4th day i contact them serveral times they keep on repiting they will upate and then they said server is out of stock and will be available soon and today is 5th day still there is no reply from them and when i contact them they clearly have no idea about it. Some says will get it soon and when i show my ticket. they say its still out of stock . When i contact with theplant.com datacenter they told me the server is available to order and are never out of stock.
I dont know whats actual reason.
Please help me guys to find good manage dedicated server host so i can cancel my order with them and go to another good company.

Some information about my forum:
I run a VBulletin forum with - 575,614 post, 14,369 members and 2.9 million page views per month. On average there are 300 - 400 people on the site.
The server right now is a Linux CentOS VPS with 1.1 gigs of memory. The hosting provider keeps telling me that I need a dedicated server.
Question # 1 - In your opinion - do you think its time for a dedicated server?
The server I am looking at has these stats:
E8300
2 GB RAM
250GB HD
cPanel
Management
The price I was given is pretty good. So the offer is going to be hard to pass up.
Question # 2 - Has anyone here used Future Hosting for their dedicated server solution?

I am just colocating servers and managing them myself, and renting services off of them. In the future I would like to start offering dedicated servers as well. I am wondering if many companies do this, or if its more of a general practice to just setup as a reseller? The worst part that comes to mind is thinking of how to do billing for the bandwidth per month. With my setup I would only be offering flat bandwidth packages (like 2TB a month) but even so, I cant think of anyway to automate it so WHMCS knows if they went over, if so, how much, etc.

I use shared web hosting service to get my website online. I'm wondering how many people use dedicated servers or virtual private servers instead and pay from $20 to several hundreds of dollars? Will I face any big problem with shared web hosting package which makes me choose dedicated servers?

Currently, I am using 1 VPS, and pay $30/mo.
Now, I want more resource. Should I buy another VPS ($30/mo)? Or buy a dedicated server(<=$60/mo)?
I understand that the 3rd choice is 1 upgraded VPS($60/mo). But I do NOT think it's better than 2 small VPS($30/mo).
which one is better? For now, I do NOT want to pay more than $60/mo.

My lease with LayeredTech is about to renew, so I am looking for better deals, and I found several $23 $24 $30 dedicated offers here. How are those servers/network/dc comparing to layeredtech?
I have not been looking for 2 years, because I was in other business. Badly needing a update on server industry now.
I thought utility bills are up, inflation is high, so it is a shock to see the price of dedicated servers are falling.

Does anyone know of a dedicated servers in USA/Canada that allow IRCd, and the price is UNDER $70/mo.
A server that has atleast 1GHz of processing power is good, such as a (Dual) P3 or a Celeron, or anything better.
It needs atleast 512MB of ram, and atleast 10GB IDE/SCSI (SCSI preferred, not needed) HDD.
And with atleast 1TB+ bandwidth.
Netdirekt has a $50 server which is what I need, though its in Germany, I prefer a USA/Canada server.

Currently I run my forum with a host that is having too much downtime for my liking. I run a new forum on vBulletin with 210 + members with 1-5 new members. My main requirements are PHP5, MySQL5 and OpenSSL. What would your suggestions be for a host / server specification? Unfortunately as I am not using any advertising so my monthly budget is rather low ($50). We currently have a dedicated server with a 2.4ghz processor and 512mb ram but I would be more than happy to move to a vps if it would be more reliable.

Intel Quad-Core Xeon 2.50GHz
2x250gb
2gb
100mbit
10TB bandwidth
$280
That price is pretty competitive, especially for 10tb dedicated bandwidth.
I was wondering if anyone has any servers with them? What's it been like?
Would be interesting to know since their main business line is just shared hosting.

We’ve been asked to offer a technical proposal for a new established TV station, and the IT manager of the station has a long list of requirements, we covered it all, only one issues lift as we never done it before:
They want about 20-100 GB server for hosting and they want to have a mirror server, incase the 1st server was down, so it would redirect the visitors to the mirror server, I'm thinking of getting them a dedicated or semi-dedicated server, but how do you do the mirror issue.
Some one said to get two dedicated servers, but::
1. How we make it that when one is down, it automatically directed to the other, I believe there is software’s for that, so were do we install this software: the original server or the mirror server.
2. Should they be from two different companies and to different countries?
3. The web site will be with CMS and DB, how do you make sure that the mirror server have all the new data that was updated in the 1st server’s DB, do they have like shared DB or something, and how..
Any other information, links, or suggested hosting sites for reliable dedicated server (with big bandwidth) would be greatly appreciated.. thanx
P.S. We use PHP/ MySql technology.

In these past many years I have used 7 major data centers which provide collocation and dedicated servers.
Out of these 7 provides, what would make a client impressed?
One is off course the level of reliability, the network must be up without anyone bothering it.
Second is the level of security, when someone is bothering it, their team must be extremely responsive to provide help to restore service back to normal, it doesn't matter if there is an additional fee for it, availability is crucial.
Third would be the response time, which is critical, because this gets personal. When a client needs an "urgent" help, if the provider successfully responded the urgency in a timely manner, it will build an great sense of trust.
It's like you as the provider is storing up "trust funds" into your clients. If you keep doing this, when something bad happens, you will have enough trust funds deposited into your client's faith, so they will eventually understand the situation.
From these many years of using many major provider, I can only experience an amazing level of service from one single provider, which are always dependable and are able to respond to my inquiries within minutes, not hours.
A client expect a reply in minutes when they are leasing a dedicated server or even collocating their servers with a provider.
So far, only one seems to be able to provide such an excellent service.
This is not a rating about a particular provider, but I would like to give an input to dedicated server providers on what's important when it comes to building a good client relationship.
Willing to do an extra mile help would definitely a big plus which I also experience with the same provider.
Lastly, I would like to leave my total satisfaction review for the one provider which surpasses my expectation being their client. The one and only provider which I personally experienced an outstanding level of service is ThePlanet.
With their pricing, the level of service I received as a client is outstanding.

I am currently using hostmonster.com and I've noticed that my service is starting to go downhill. The site is taking longer to load and I've read that in some cases they will terminate your account without notifications.
I am a photographer and my website will be growing in the future. I am looking for a site that I can host my high res images and maybe video streaming for my wedding events. Should I go with a semi-dedicated server?
What are some cheap reputable semi-dedicated hosting companies?

I have 2 dedicated servers to host several websites at this moment. Each server hosts several website, include both files and database (Apache, PHP, Mysql). And I think that this is not a good model.
I intend to re-organize my servers to have one server for web applications (Apache and PHP) and one server for databases (Mysql). In this case, the servers could be better optimized.
What OS should be used for each server?

I am currently with The Planet with the following configuration - Dual Xeon 2.4 - SCSI, 1 GB RAM, 73 GB 10K RPM SCSI/SAS HDD. But it lag spikes when I run a Counter Strike server on it, I don't know if it's there network or something wrong with the hardware.
I had a Pentium 4 2.8 ghz from Calhost and it never lagged, and keep in mind this is a Dual Xeon. I have been trying to figure out the problem, but no luck yet. My question is - what other companies in Texas sell dedicated servers?
Does anyone know what could be causing the lag spikes? Or had a similar incident with The Planet. I don't know if it's there network.
