To Do Virtualization Inside VPS
I have this nice vps, but its on linux, and I always wanted to run windows apps on the vps, because of the nice configuration. I already tried wine, but most of my windows apps don't work, cuz they require .net framework to run.
I tried to instal vmware server and virtualbox, but both of them complain about a kernel problem, they are unable to locate my kernel source, so they can't run.
I am linux newbie, and i am running on a centos 5 operating system.
Some people say its impossible to run virtualization 'inside' virtualization, but i already read some people that say its possible.

Configuring Openswan(ipsec) Or Poptop(pptp) Vpn Inside VPS
I'm trying to establish a VPN server inside a Fedora 10 VPS under OpenVZ. Openswan or Poptop is preferred over OpenVPN because Windows has built-in support for these protocols. It looks like the host node (it's actually the vps from myprohost.com) doesn't have the required kernel modules enabled(installed?). Take Poptop for example, if I run pppd after rpm installation, the output is like this: [root@v ~]# /usr/sbin/pppd /usr/sbin/pppd: This system lacks kernel support for PPP. This could be because the PPP kernel module could not be loaded, or because PPP was not included in the kernel configuration. If PPP was included as a module, try `/sbin/modprobe -v ppp'. If that fails, check that ppp.o exists in /lib/modules/`uname -r`/net. See README.linux file in the ppp distribution for more details. [root@v ~]# modprobe -v ppp FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.1.18.el5.028stab060.2/modules.dep: No such file or directory And when I check for the availability of the encryption module "MPPE", I got the same result: [root@v ~]# modprobe mppe FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.18-92.1.18.el5.028stab060.2/modules.dep: No such file or directory Openswan complains about some missing kernel modules too. So what do I do? Do I tell the provider to enable these modules? Do they normally do that? Will the host node require a reboot after having done that? What modules are required for Poptop and Openswan? And, do I need to tell them to re-enable these modules every time I rebuild my OS?

ClearanceRack.ca: REVIEW - A+ All Around, Look Inside
I've been using Clearancerack for about 4 or 5 months now and feel I should write an honest review about them considering there really doesn't seem to be too many. Ever since the start several months ago, I've had nothing but a pleasant experience working with Chris and clearancerack. So, here we go they get a : Setup: 10/10 The setup is stellar. The first server I ordered was up the night that I ordered it (only a few hours) all ready to go. The servers even come with a free apc remote reboot port! Pricing: 10/10 You could not ask for more affordable pricing than that of ClearanceRack, considering the extraordinary support, network, and all around company. Their prices are cheaper than those of the highest quality competitors, yet provide even higher quality service! Even collocation pricing is very affordable! I will probably be sending up a few nodes in the next several months. Network: 10/10 There has not been one second of downtime in the month's that I've been there. There was an issue with the network routing once, using bandwidth suppliers that the DC has connections to, yet Clearancerack does not use. This was fixed within several hours as well. The network consists of a BGP mix of Peer1, All Stream, Shaw Big Pipe, MCI and peering to TorIX. Almost all of my users experience faster downloads around the globe on the ClearanceRack network, than several of the other networks we've used throughout the US. Support: 11/10 - Yes 11... The support is stellar. They provide 24/7 E-mail (it really is 24/7) and REAL HUMAN Phone support (you won't get the usual leave a message, unless they really are busy and cannot take your call). At any time of day you email them, you'll have a response within minutes, even sales! We've had one issue with one of our nodes in which Chris had to go into the datacenter to take a quick look. The issue was resolved in 30 minutes at the most. Any requests we've made, whether it be licensing, IP allocations have all been handled extremely quickly, no matter what time of day it is. Company: Many times you'll hear people say, "They're great for a small scale company." Meaning, they're decent, but do have their downs that the higher scale competitors don't. Its not like that at Clearancerack. Every single thing about them is stellar, and the service is MUCH better than service I've received at various considered "higher scale and known" datacenters around the globe. Clearancerack, ran by Chris - is ran by REAL people, wanting to make a REAL difference in the hosting market, and he/they are doing an amazing job at that. You don't experience any poor customer service that you'll experience elsewhere. They are 100% honest with any sort of question, issue, or comment you may have. You WON'T get any of the lies, or uninformative information you receive elsewhere when an issue arises. Personal: Chris, I will continue to be working with you for many years to come, as I hope many of the current subscribers, and the future do to. Someone like you deserves the very best, and should GREATLY succeed in their business career. - Thank you for everything Chris! - You really know what hosting is all about. Thats It! Thanks for taking the time to read this review. Generally you won't find a honest review with the ratings that I've given these guys, but THEY do deserve it, at the very least. I do not have one complaint about them as I do many other providers, and I've tried many throughout the globe. I hope you will go ahead and try ClearanceRack for your dedicated solutions needs. They have no contracts, so you can sign up for one month, test out the service and make a final decision (although I can pretty much guarantee you will stay!) Hostingcon: If your going to hostingcon, check em' out! They have their own booth there! -----------------------

I purchased a NEW one June 1st. Why is thunderbird grabbing my old ssl cert? The website's https:// works perfectly. I also checked the server ssl self-signed certs and all are up to date.

Pix501 Bidirectional Nat Outside To Inside To Internet
I have a PIX501 firewall with a wireless network attached to the outside interface and our local network attached to the inside interface. I've setup access lists to permit the wireless clients attached to the outside interface to be able to access services on our inside interfaces. The wireless clients are on a totally seperate /24 subnet. Now everything seems to work fine with nat statements for our local wired subnets for example wirelessClients accessing the email server etc however the wireless clients cannot access the internet. For the wireless clients to get out onto our internet connection they have to take the following path wirelessLaptop - CiscoAccessPoint - OutsideIntPIX501 - InsideIntPIX501 - CiscoSwitch - InsideCorporatePIX515E - OutsideCorporatePIX515E - Internet Below is a cut of some of the PIX501 config that the wireless clients are connected to. name 10.1.1.2 accessPoint name 10.1.1.0 WirelessLan name 100.100.100.1 pix515fw object-group network WirelessLan network-object WirelessLan 255.255.255.0 object-group network WebAccessNetwork network-object pix515fw 255.255.255.255 object-group network InternalAccessNetwork network-object ..All our local servers here... object-group service WebAccessUDP udp port-object eq domain object-group service WebAccessTCP tcp port-object eq www port-object eq ftp-data port-object eq domain port-object eq ftp object-group service InternalAccessUDP udp port-object eq all our local server ports object-group service InternalAccessTCP tcp port-object eq all our local server ports access-list outside_access_in permit udp object-group WirelessLan object-group InternalAccessNetwork object-group InternalAccessUDP access-list outside_access_in permit tcp object-group WirelessLan object-group InternalAccessNetwork object-group InternalAccessTCP access-list outside_access_in permit udp object-group WirelessLan object-group WebAccessNetwork object-group WebAccessUDP access-list outside_access_in permit tcp object-group WirelessLan object-group WebAccessNetwork object-group WebAccessTCP ip address outside 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0 ip address inside 100.100.100.2 255.255.255.0 nat (outside) 0 WirelessLan 255.255.255.0 outside 0 0 static (outside, inside) accessPoint accessPoint netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0 static (inside, outside) InternalSubnet1 InternalSubnet1 netmask 255.255.255.0 0 0 access-group outside_access_in in interface outside route inside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 pix515fw 1 route inside InternalSubnet1 255.255.255.0 OurLocalRouter 1 So my question is how should I go about giving the access for the WirelessClients to be able to open web pages on the internet? For that to happen the traffic has to pass through the outside interface on the 501 firewall out of the inside interface onto the local switch and then back out of our main PIX515E to reach the destionation. I'm fairly sure I'd need to modify the WebAccessNetwork access-list to permit WirelessLan to any against the port listings so thats not a problem I can change that how I'm not entirely sure I to go about it with the NAT statements.

Performace Of Windows Inside Xen & VMWare VM
I need several Windows VMs to test out some softwares and I plan on using virtualization technology to cut some costs. I have a Linux(Debian Etch) dedicated server sitting to accomplish this. Specs are Quad Core Xeon 2.13Ghz with 4GB Ram/500GB HDD. Now if I were to choose between Xen 3.1 and VMWare Server for the virtualization technology which would provide better performance? I tried Windows on Xen 3.1 with PV Drivers and it seemed some what slow, but I'm not sure what the case was there so I can't say which would provide better performance overall.

How To Cache/proxy Streaming Content - More Details Inside
I've got a dedicated server running my portal. Now we plan to soon launch broadcasting, where we via a webcam + microphone will broadcast (streaming WMV media) to all our members. Our members will then be able to interact with the speakers via chatting. Now we are currently undergoing loadtesting, with our current setup, which is: 1. dedicated server+ultrafast connection=>chatting 2. home PC with static IP and 1 MBit upload=>Video+Audio Streaming So the member requests a page from the dedicated server, which has a chat window and a windows media player. The player will retrieve the video/audio content from the home PC. This is done by the client. Now is pretty logical to see that there will be limitations in how many connections the home pc will be able to handle. The question is: How do i make the dedicated server get the content from the home pc (so it only serves one connection) and then get all the clients to get their video content from the dedicated server ? I've looked into the proxy modules for the apache server, however they (forward/reverse proxy) both passes the connection on to the remote machine and thereby not doing what I want to do.

Which Virtualization For Desktop
This is a little bit Offtopic here but maybe it's okay to ask my question. For my GUI software development i need a virtual server solution. It must run WinXP, WinVista, LinuxI386, LinuxAMD64, FreeBSDI386, FreeBSDAMD64 and Solaris. I'm currently running VMWare with all this systems. But their KVM tools are very instable - especially when waking up from hibernate etc. They eat the key/mouse focus and the only way to get any reaction is often a hard shutdown. How good are the other Virtualization Kits? I heared that FreeBSD does not work on VirtualBox? I'm especially interested in Xen but i'm not sure if this is good for Desktop use. Seems that it is promoted almost exclusively as a server solution.

Apache X Virtualization
We usually find some constrains using Apache/cpanel (1.3.41). Basically, we serve simple php codes and few images. We usually setup our server to use lighttpd for static content and apache for dynamic content. Ok, due to some complex requirements on mod_rewrite we use that setup. But frequently we see our apache reaches it limit and slow down with 0 idle servers. Specially as we have about 270 requests/per second on apache. Our load is low, barely passes 1,2 of load for small periods, our memory ok, our I/O is fine. But we almost always reaches the 0 idle servers. Until now, our best config was: Timeout between 60-120 KeepAlive Off MaxKeepAliveRequests 1000 KeepAliveTimeout 15 MinSpareServers 50 MaxSpareServers 200 StartServers 50 MaxClients 256 MaxRequestsPerChild 80 As we clearly see that our server is under usage, I was wondering if it's a limitation on Apache or if I put virtualization on my server and run two apache webservers as cluster I would get better results. So what do you think about guys? It's a matter of optimization (what could I do better for this httpd.conf setup?) ? Or cluster with virtualization would deliver what I'm looking for.

Virtual Iron Virtualization
Basically I need to virtualize a single new dell server. One virtual server needs to run windows 2003 server standard and Microsoft SQL 2005. The other virtual server will run CentOS Linux with a perl and PostgreSQL application. The dell server is going to have two quad core xeon processors (8 cores total), 8gigs of ram, and two 15,000rpm SAS drives. I came across Virutal Iron which is free for the single server instance and seems like it will do the job well. Has anybody used it? What is performance like? Seems to run a Java backend so wondering about the performance there. Any other recommendations? I looked at VMware but the cost is so high, and probably more then I need, since I only need to virtualize a single server.

Virtualization Solution? VMware, Virtuozzo, Xen..?
I'm running a dedicated server and the main site on the server relies on Windows OS. The site is not fully utilizing the potential of the dedicated server, so I'd like to put some of my other sites on the same server and eliminate the other (shared) hosting I've been using. Here's the catch... For the other sites, I'd like to run WHM/Cpanel which requires Linux. If I understand correctly, this leaves me with having to decide on a virtualization solution, which I know nothing about. Some options I have been given are VMware, Virtuozzo, and Xen. Would you suggest one of these or a different solution entirely?

Virtualization --48Gb @ 1333Mhz Or 72GB @ 800Mhz
So when buying nehalem servers, if you populate 6 rdimms, you can run at 1333Mhz, if you populate 18 rdimms, 800 Mhz (12 rdimms, 1066mhz) So what do you do for virtualization? the reality is most of the time 48gb is going to be enough for virtualization (that would run 12 4GB servers or 32 2GB servers) and i think at 64gb or more, CPU starts to become a limting factor, but the price of 48GB @ 1333 is slightly more than 72GB @ 800. So what are you guys doing out there? do you go for the performance or do you go with the overkill of memory (that might sometimes come in handy but you probably wont use it all -- more likely just give your VMs more memory for the fun it)? The problem is the 1333 Mhz vs 800 Mhz performance. Our current environment is a bunch of 16GB servers (50xx chip) and the limitation on us virtualizating more per host is the memory. So I know 48GB is going to be very much welcomed and I think we could use more.. 64gb would be ideal, but we will be happy with 48@1333, but 72GB sounds interesting too, there might be some scenarios where we could use that 72GB although i think performance will shift from memory limitation now to CPU Do you think if we buy 800Mhz 72gb we will ever look back and think "wish we bought the 48gb 1333 rdimms and not these 800mhz ones"?

Obviously VMWare is the market leader, the big boys are using it and its something you can bank on. (literally! HSBC use it ALOT!) Is it even worth looking at VI/Xen for something like this? What I'm looking for: - linux hosting - hosting for 30+ accounts, some with several domains - at least 6 IP addresses for SSL certs - each account in a full chroot environment (ssh/sftp/ftp) so they can't poke around each others' files, or each account set up in a virtual machine setup (ie: openvz) - maildir - spamassassin - php 5, mysql, perl 5.8.8 - suexec apache would be nice

Memory Issues On JaguarPC VPS. Suggestions? Recommend A Virtual Private Server (VPS)
I recently moved my site from a shared hosting plan at $5 a month to a VPS at JaguarPC. I took advantage of one of the offers here at Web Host Talk. My setup has cPanel with 320MB of RAM. I have another site running the same software (Joomla, vBulletin) with cPanel and only 256MB of RAM at KnownHost. I've had zero problems with Knownhost and the site is snappy. The site hosted at JaguarPC continues to have all kinds of problems. Running a number of sites, I don't always get to check in on my sites unless I know of a problem. I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention to this site, because it was having all types of PHP memory issues. When I first contacted JaguarPC, they said they boosted the memory in Apache. The issues remained, so I contacted them again. They recommended more RAM. Now, I checked on my KnownHost site and that's running on 256MB. I figured that maybe JaguarPC didn't allocate enough RAM when they set up the VPS. They confirmed 320MB. Not wanting to change hosts, I asked them to poke around a bit more, considering what I know about KnownHost and my success there. I received this response: have checked and you are running named service on your server. named caches dns data and this can also consume a lot of memory, sometimes over a 100 MB may be consumed by this service. In addition to cPanel and named which are most memory consuming applications running on your server, there are other applications like apache web server and the php scripts running on the server also consume some memory. It is highly recommended that you upgrade the RAM on your VPS significantly to avoid such problems which may cause disruption of service. You can find a list of RAM and other VPS addons in the following link. Instead of helping me resolve the problem, they simply keep asking me to get more RAM. For SEO purposes, I like to keep my sites on different hosts. Can anyone recommend a VPS? I was certainly unaware that "named service" had such an impact on my VPS. If that's the case, is there any harm in not having this? SEO or otherwise?

Ubiquity VPS Four-month Review (and About Adventures With VPS In General
The short: Professional, honest, and competent. I've learned that when dealing with VPSes, if you want to be fancy you need to tolerate problems. While Icertainly had some interesting issues [url] with Ubiquity, besides a few of them they fall into the categories of 'stuff happens' and 'should get a dedicated server, instead'. It ran two of the most active adult communities in the world without a hitch. Except my members are addicted to them like crack and 15 minute lag issues are the end of the world for some : ) So now, four months after I left Acceleratedweb for Ubiquity [url]I am the proud owner of an overstock server from Ubiquity and am reviewing their VPS. As the first link suggests - it wasn't my first shot with Ubiquity. I think that says a lot for making "If you ever want to come back." offers. They now have $125/month of my money, most of that guaranteed (I dislike having only one host so am probably going to try poking Futurehosting again after Lenny becomes a VPS install option there, or maybe Steadfast). I really appreciate Ubiquity's patience with me while I learned how to self manage. I've come to detest control panels and have gotten rather good at it, especially after custom designing my own LAMP stack (handled over four thousand php page landings and forty thousand queries a minute from seventy connections... bad AJAX is a good DDOS simulation). Typical Response Time: Ten minutes or so - pretty fast, though resolution can often be longer. The clock on vz010 is off by six hours on reboot. Very annoying. General attitude: Not as individually detailed as AcceleratedWeb was, but this is okay, since I know more on my own now. Beyond that, they are generally pleasant compared to other VPS host's I've tried. Server ping: Originally around 15 milliseconds. 40 now, and the same to my new server - I wonder if echo requests or replies are throttled. I'm not sure if I'm a good judge here - the forums rarely take more than 2 mbps during any given minute unless I'm downloading a backup. Server uptime: There was a crash a few days after I moved the forums to the VPS. November was around 99% with that, but otherwise it's closer to 99.8%, if you count occasional local outages. There is a router in between their network and their VPSes which sometimes goes haywire, which seems to be the main culprit. Server speed: This is a bit tricky. Ubiquity only gives you access to one core. This may seem bad, but occasionally VPS members get hoggy, do you want one person out of thirty bringing your VPS down or one person out of four? In the end, raw disk bandwidth is what counts for performance for me. The VPS server itself has a monstrous amount of RAM making this, usually, a non-issue. Occasionally though another VPSer would do something disk-heavy enough for us to suffer. "Get dedicated" <- we just did, that's why this review is here : ) Security: Ubiquity only took my root password when trying to diagnose the mystery disappearing disk space issue. They run a RAID and perform daily backups, and their control and billing software has no obvious security issues (though their billing software is plenty funky in other ways). Price: Futurehosting is a bit more expensive but offers the future protect deal, while Ubiquity only permits one backup via the control panel. Pretty competitive for what is offered and allowed. ---- I did have issues with Ubiquity. Their DNS servers fritz occasionally. There was the mysterious disk issue that caused me to leave them in the first place. The server crash really made me grit my teeth. The system clock on vz010 gets set ahead 6 hours on reboot - very annoying (and the butt of a lot of time travel jokes on my forums). Even though that only happened twice. There are lag spike issues, but it never brought the forums down after the first time and even then it was resolved within 15 minutes. Something I've learned and made it a bit of a mantra. Tolerate mistakes, cheap, do what you want - pick two. Or better, a good balance between them. The support staff is both professional and, in general, technically competent. If something is over someone's head, it happens, it gets forwarded on and is generally dealt with. The only thing I really blame them for is letting vz010's clock be off for six hours after I notified them - but they were apparently rather busy. ---- I looked over dozens of VPSes for the criteria I wanted, and paid for several. I needed a US host, in a fairly liberal state - I do not want my server hijacked by puritan authorities as had happened in Florida and Pennsylvania. I needed to host adult content, with an irc policy that makes sense. I needed to run Debian Lenny, and manage it on my own. Out of all of them, Ubiquity was the only one that let me do everything I needed to, reliably and with confidence, for a price I could comfortably afford. Not sure what else could matter, in the end. : )

I want to start my blog farm(many blogs linking to eachother) so I need a VPS. I was thinking about a VPS with at least 748Ram and 20GB disk space and at least 200GB data traffic. The VPS must be full managed with top nitch support via live chat or email. Speed must be perfect, worldwide. At least 4 IP's or more,or available for less then $2,50 per month. The VPS provider must have his own hardware and tech staff 24/7/365. My budget will be around $40 per month.

Lunarpages VPS Or Servint VPS? What Is Your Opinion On Lunarpages VPS?
I am looking for a new VPS and once again I think I am going to ditch Servint VPS in preference of a cheaper VPS. I know Servint is well known and they have a very good reputation here in this forum. I been longing to sign up with them but Lunarpages' offer looks very attractive. What about Lunarpages? It is $10 cheaper than Servint. Lunarpages has 1000 GB bandwidth but Servint has only 500 GB. Lunarpages has 20 GB storage but Servint has only 15 GB. Lunarpages has 500 MB RAM but Servint has 384 MB guaranteed RAM (1 GB burst RAM). Is the 500 MB RAM here http://www.lunarpages.com/virtual-private-server/ GUARANTEED RAM or SHARED BURSTABLE RAM? The only thing that Lunarpages lost to Servint here is the number of IP address. Lunarpages comes with 1 IP but Servint offers 4 IP which is good for SEO. I wanted to contact Lunarpages but couldn't find their contact email. Anyone know their contact email?

Convert From Plesk VPS To CPanel VPS
I mostly work with cPanel/WHM but, I have to work with Plesk for just one client of mine. He's on Plesk becoz I came to know Plesk worked better on 256MB VPS than cPanel in the early days. Hence, on my recommendation, he is on Plesk on a 512 MB Memory VPS till now for all these years. I wonder how tedious it might be to convert from Plesk to cPanel? The client basically uses Joomala + vBulletin and runs forums as of now. Also, which CP will perform better on 512 MB VPS - Plesk or cPanel.

Transfer Sites From VPS To Another VPS Transparently
We've got about 40 sites hosted on a VPS from a provider that we'd like to put elsewhere due to reliability problems where we are. So is there a way to transfer all of this between VPS's (assuming similar environment) and maintain all existing web content, email addresses/passwords/aliases/forwarders, MySQL databases, etc? I know I'd have to change everyone's DNS records.

Linux VPS Vs. Windows VPS
I'm thinking of upgrading my shared hosting account to a VPS account, but I do not know which to go for. Right now I'm using Linux for my website. I do understand that there are differences between Linux and Windows. What I don't understand is why would someone choose Linux over Windows or Windows over Linux. If I understand correctly, I would be able to install applications such as mIRC on windows via Remote Desktop. That's something I like. However, I never controlled my website on a Windows computer before. So basically what are the differences between Linux VPS and Windows VPS?

Cpanel VPS - Plenty Of Free Memory, But 'committed' Memory Exceeds VPS RAM
I have a VPS. And have had an issue both when it was 1Gig and now I recently downgraded it to 768m, because I am moving some sites to a dedicated. However, the part I am having trouble grasping is that when I look at graphs from Munin, it will typically always show 200-400MB free memory (and free -m and top agrees with munin), but Munin shows 'committed' memory that is above the total Ram on the VPS and once the 'committed' ram exceeds the VPS limit, processes start failing. So, why is 'committed' memory exceeding the RAM on my VPS, when Munin, free -m and top all show there is free memory available? Code: root@server [~]# free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 768 449 318 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 449 318 Swap: 0 0 0 Here's a graph that munin produces that shows the 'committed' memory exceeding the total memory. Looking For A VPS ~$25
Looking for a VPS that has the following: - Datacenter/Server located in the north east of USA (Something in NY or Chicago would be good enough) - Approx 200~300GB bandwidth - 256~512MB Ram preferred - HDD Space is not an issue, something like 5GB is more than enough. - Win2003 is a must - A share of 1Ghz or more of CPU utilization preferred. - Budget: $20 (+/- $5) USD/mth - Accepts PayPal as payment method preferred, but not a requirement. Also, if its possible, please give me a sample IP to ping with, since I am running a Warcraft 3 DotA server, plus a small webserver to serve stats, so I wanted the lowest ping possible.

Get Everything Out From A VPS
So it seems my proxy got linked on a lot of blogs, and is more popular than ever... 8.2k unique and 14.6k pageviews in 12 hours... It seems like my VPS is getting slower and slower now, as it takes a lot of time to load the page. Any suggestion on how I could optimize the VPS in the best way, making it faster? It isn't directly resource intensive, the current stats is: CPU load averages 0.08 (1 min) 0.10 (5 mins) 0.09 (15 mins) Real memory 1024 MB total, 57.28 MB used (I'm using nginx btw) Is it that the internet connection is slow/can't handle it?
