I Have Lots Of Bandwidth, But My Host Is Slow - Should I Pay For Virtualization
I use a host that gives me way more bandwidth and space than I need, but it is still super slow. It's Dreamhost who is known for charging very low fees and promising the world. Although my sites do load and I get unlimited everything pretty much, I can't stand the slow loads.
They have offered me virtualization of my server so I can create my own virtual server with 150Mhz and 150MB of dedicated CPU/memory for $15 more a month... do you think that will speed me up a lot or should I just suck it up and pay for a better host that doesn't pimp themselves out so badly?

Lots Of Bandwidth
My friend is setting up a media sharing site which will use a lot of bandwidth. He would like to colo two 2U servers with 10TB or so of bandwidth each. I have advised him that FDCservers unmetered is about the best price he can have. Can anyone else suggest a place offering 100mbit or 10TB of transfer for less than $1000/month per server.

Lots Of Bandwidth For Arcades Sites
I've a few arcades sites and they're using more bandwidth than my servers can handle (> 2TB month). I currently have two dedicated boxes. The sites are static, so they don't require much processing power, just bandwidth (lots of .swf files). My current host(liquidweb) offered me a 10mb unmetered for 100usd/month, which sounded too much, as I think that I'd be better renting more servers(Or VPSs) and spreading the sites (avoiding single point of failure). I searched and thought about trying mediatemple grid service, which offers 1TB bw/month. What do you guys think? Will I be able to use all the BW they promise, ow they will try to kick me off saying that I'm using too much resources(even I hosting only static files)?

Best Way To Pay For Bandwidth
Is it better to pay for 95th percentile or (what ever that is) is it better to pay per GB used. I pay per 100GB used and I can upgrade it at anytime during the month which makes it very easy to manage but I would like to more about the differences here. My issue is and not really that big of one but when I have paid for 400GB and then on the last day of the month I go to 410GB and have to buy 100GB more so I do not get charged overages. I end up with 90GB left unused which someone is banking my cash on. Besides that I think this really works well for me. Which way do most co-lo users pay?

Node Setup - Lots And Lots Of Low Spec Servers Or
I run a large service on 2 machines (we're talking 8x2.66Ghz processing power, 4-6GB ram, etc), however we are thinking about creating a node/clustered setup to help spread the load, bandwidth, mysql (having one server for hundreds of thousands of databases is not wise it seems :p), diskspace etc. Lots of machines just seems to be a cheaper and more powerful option. Would you advise going with lots of lower end machines, or just a few mid-range machines. Here is what I propose: 3 of these Dual Xeon 3GHZ Dual-Core (4x3GHz) 3GB RAM 500GB Sata Drive 4000 GB Bandwidth 100mbit or 4 of these XEON X3220 QUAD CORE 2.4GHZ 1066FSB 2GB DDR2 RAM (Upgradeable) 250GB HDD 2000GB Bandwidth 100mbit or 7 of these Dual Xeon 3.06 Ghz 2GB DDR2 RAM 250GB SATA 2000GB BW/MONTH 100mbit All of the above are roughly similar prices in total.

Is There Any "Pay As You Use On Additional Servers + Bandwidth" Providers
This is my 1st post on this forum and my sole reason is to gain some valuable advice from members of this great community to my hosting predicament below. We are currently developing an e-commerce website that has similar business model as woot.com. I believe you have heard of this website before as it is very popular in the U.S. Their business model is to sell 1 item a day and the sale will end prematurely if the quantity of the product is sold off before the day ends. What I would like to bring your attention is that woot.com has a special event called “WOOTOFF”, whereby instead of selling 1 item a day, they would have successive items for sale JUST FOR THE DAY. On this special “WOOTOFF” occasion, there would be A HUGE TRAFFIC SPIKE FOR THE DAY as compared to their regular days. Traffic could increase 10 FOLD or more for this “WOOTOFF” event when compared to their regular daily affair sales. OUR WEBSITE As a startup business similar to woot.com, we intend to start off with only 1 dedicated server to handle our entire frontend, backend, and database web operation and to handle REGULAR traffic flow on normal day sales, in which we would expect around less than 5K CONCURRENT active users to visit our website on a daily basis for the first few months. There would also be a blog and forum as well on our site. Since we will be having such similar “WOOTOFF” event (probably once every 2 – 3 months), the traffic will definitely increase multiple folds for that 24 hours and our 1 unit server definitely will not be able to cope with the increased traffic load. Also, it is not economical to just go out and rent extra dedicated servers to handle that spike of traffic load (in that 24 hours) whereby we will have pay for the extra servers based on the entire month’s fee. This means out of the 30 days in a month, the additional rented servers’ and bandwidth resource are only fully utilized for that 1 day while the remaining 29 days are sitting there idle. Just to illustrate my point. Let say to handle our normal traffic flow, we have 2 present servers in place. When we run the “WOOTOFF” event and if we were to expect a 10 fold hike in traffic, then the additional number of servers we need to add is 10 x 2 = 20 additional servers. If each server rental costs like US$400.00 per month, we are looking at paying US$8,000 just for the rental of the 20 additional servers in a month, but are only used for ONE day to handle the traffic and bandwidth spike while the remaining days are left idle. This method and the associated cost involved to handle that 1 day traffic spike is not acceptable for us at all. I HOPE YOU GUYS CAN SOLVE THE QUESTIONS I HAVE BELOW BASED ON THE ABOVE “WOOTOFF” SCENARIO. 1. Is there any dedicated server provider that allows for customers to only pay for the additional servers and bandwidth resources just to handle the additional traffic spike for that day’s usage? 2. I understand that there is a method to pay as you use method by utilizing Amazon S3 or CDN network but I’m completely clueless about how to go about this. 3. To your knowledge, what would be the most cost effective solution and how you’d go about it if you were in a shoestring budget whereby you’d only want to pay for the additional servers and bandwidth just for the day’s usage? HERE IS A QUESTION FOR YOU BASED ON NORMAL SERVER UPGRADE OR ADDITIONS BASED ON STEADY INCREASE OF NORMAL TRAFFIC. In the near future, if our website is recording a steady increase of NORMAL traffic and our primary 1st server cannot handle the increased traffic, of course we would have to add more dedicated servers whereby the newly added servers will be a permanent fixture paid on a monthly basis to take care of the steady increase of NORMAL traffic. 4. What would be your advice to me to load balance the traffic who insist on the most convenient, optimal and economical load balance solution to handle the steady increase of NORMAL traffic flow? E.g. server clustering, server mirrors, round robin DNS, etc as opposed to renting a load balancing router hardware from server providers that could cost like US$500+ monthly (rental + each server setup) whether it is being used or not.

Is There An "email Host" That Lets You Send Lots Of Emails
I have a list of a few thousands subscribers and want to use a joomla component to handle my sign ups and announcements. Problem is my web host only allows a certain amount of emails per hour, and a cap on emails per day. Are there any email hosts, meaning, a service I can sign up with that will allow me to send these emails? I don't want anything complex like aweber and constant contact. I just want the articles on my site's news section to become the actual announcement/newsletter. I thought about Feedburner, but they don't let you import your subscribers.. I wouldn't be sending announcements every day, but perhaps a couple of times per month..

High Bandwidth Host
I have a client who has came to me for advice on his web site. I own a dedicated server and manage it using PLESK. I do pretty well managing it but I'm definitely not an expert on hosting by any means. So I need your help. He is starting a new web site and he is going to do radio advertising on a lot of stations and expects to get a lot of hits. The web site seems to be pretty small with only a few pages of text and minimal pictures, so I don't think it will use that much just by the site being so small. But anyway, I want him and me to feel comfortable that the site is not going to go down no matter how many hits he gets. How do I guesstimate this? What are some good hosting companies that offer high bandwidth and protect you from overage charges -- or at least charge little for overages. I'm looking to spend less than $80/month. Also, do you have any idea: How many users will 10GB bandwidth cover if it's only a 5 page site with one picture on each page and 5 paragraphs of text just to get an idea.

Adult Host, Managed, With Unmetered Bandwidth
I am hosting a few websites with my host, powweb.com (shared hosting). Now I am thinking to go for an adult xxx website, and my host is not ready to host an adult website with them, and thus, I am looking for a new host now. Things are: 1. I have very little knowledge about server management, as till now my shared host was doing everything, so I may need a host who offers a completely managed hosting, including backups, security, etc (just as a shared host would do). 2. I need a host that allows extreme adult contents. 3. The site will be a new one, but I am planning to go for offline marketing and hoping that I will get a good amount of visitors. Also the site will offer online movies. Taking these things into consideration, I am thinking that I may need a host that offers unmetered bandwidth. I would like to get some tips from you guys, and if any of you know a good host, thanks for letting me know as well.

Shared Host <$5/mo - 10+ Addons, 1gb+ Bandwidth
I tried to put as much as possible into the title I've had asmallorange for like 6 years now, was great host but lately uptime seemed to suffer a bit. Searching for some new one to try. Could You recommend a cheap less than $5/mo shared hosting? What I need: highest uptime available, 99.8 or above would be great use more than 10 websites with them, addon domains feature. bandwidth above 1 gig, maybe above 5, not sure. support doesn't matter that much, cause I almost never ned to contact them, lol another thing I'd prefer is to use company's details in WHOIS info - that's really kind of important. Don't like Godaddy's $10 service. Just don't want to pay.

Host Location, Storage/bandwidth, SiteBuildIt.com...
I have a few questions: 1. I was wondering whether my choice in web host is limited to the particular country where I reside, or whether I can choose a web host from any country? If the latter is true, are there any disadvantages to this? 2. Also, I would like to set up a website and from what I understand of my investigations so far, there exist two possibilities. The first is to download all the necessary software and do it all by myself which will also involve finding a good host that meets my needs and also optimising the website for Google. The other way would be to subscribe to an online company which provides all of these services in one package at a determined price. Which would be better? 3. Has anyone ever come across a site called SiteBuildIt.com, or also known as SiteSell.com? Would this be a good option and are they or do they do what they claim? If it is a good option, are there any other sites similar to SiteSell? Therefore, would it be more practical to subscribe to a company like SiteSell where I can get all my hosting, web design and SEO needs all under one roof or would I be better off going it on my own? 4. With regard to my hosting needs, how much storage and bandwidth will I be looking at in order to run a small real estate website?

Host That Doesn't Lie About Bandwidth Space?
I am sure this thread was most likely created before but I haven't been able to find anything on the particular host I just had an issue with. It goes like this. I've been through web hosts ever since 1998. I've grown accustomed to web hosts deceiving their customers by listing '20 gigs of BW use, or 'Unlimited BW' (which we all know is BS) but for the past few years, I actually had a host who didn't lie about how much BW their customers got with the packages. I signed up for a 20 gig BW account with HostVector and I've used up to 19 gigs and they have never said a single word. I left them recently because they were bought out by Millennium Services and ever since then, its been a nightmare. Constant down time, tech support nowhere to be found. Sadly to say, I had to leave that host due to fact that their new owners have no clue what they are doing. I found ELIEF and thought they looked promising. I signed up for the package that listed 20 gigs of BW, now at first I thought okay.. this may be fishy, but if this was a flake, they would have specified that customers really won't get 20 gigs of BW. Regardless, I trusted them the way I trusted HostVector. Seeing how I am a musician, I uploaded a 80MB pack and sent it to some friends to download and not even a 12 hours later. My account was suspended because it apparently caused their server to crash? I checked the stats and only 68 users downloaded that 80MB file. This is beyond aggravating. I know there are countless web hosts who lie about this type of stuff but why cant at least specify someplace on their page a more detailed info about bandwidth usage? Maybe put an asterisks next to the BW section like some hosts do and explain that what is listed there is not the reality. So here I am, my domain is suspended. My fans/listeners/friends are wondering what happened and I am sitting here angered beyond belief because I thought this type of lying was something that hosts stopped doing in the late 90s. Any recommendation guys? Does an honest web host who actually offers the same amount of BW they list on their hosting packages, exist anywhere?

VPS Incredibly Slow, Huge Numbers Of Slow MySQL Queries For Plesk/Watchdog
I've got 25 domains on a Virtuozzo/Plesk8.6/CentOS5 VPS. Each domain has one up-to-date install of WordPress, most have very little traffic (average 200mb per month), maybe 2 domains get 5-7gb traffic per month. I monitor port 80 connections and rarely see more than 10 at a time. That should in my opinion be no problem at all for a VPS with 768mb guaranteed ram and 2.4ghz cpu. I've got 30gb hard drive spare too. But.... about 8 or 10 times a day it grinds to a complete halt: server load at 500-1000%, sites timing out, plesk takes 3mins to load, often I can't even connect with SSH, and the plesk web server, apache INSERT INTO module_watchdog_sys_stat (time, type, value, service_id) VALUES(FROM_UNIXTIME(1226404705), 'MAINMEM_USAGE', 17472, 11); 80 seconds sounds like a huge amount of time for a MySQL insert to me! Does anyone know if this is likely to be the cause of my trouble? Some problem with Plesk and the database? Or could it be something else?

Will 512MB RAM And 200GB Bandwidth Host 5 Low-key Websites
I'm seriously considering the LVPS-2 plan at SWVPS: 10GB space, 200GB bandwidth, 512MB RAM (burstable to 768MB). I have four sites hosted with MediaTemple but I want to give VPS another shot since it provides full root access. MediaTemple is hosting me fine, but I keep running into roadblocks with things that involve custom compiling. I'd really like some more flexibility. So how easy would it be to add 4 domains to one VPS plan and have them all in their own subdirectory? Also, two of these domains would have one e-mail address, so I'd need a mail server along with a FTP server. I know these two to be slight resource hogs from my previous VPS experiences, as they both caused me to go over my limit (which was, I think, 256MB). I sent SWVPS an email but all I got was a suggestion to get a dedicated server. These days it's hard to tell a genuine recommendation from someone trying to milk another $40/mo out of you. I really don't think I need a dedicated server for these sites, as I've hosted much more than that on shared servers (granted, that's a completely different area). I also can't afford dedicated hosting. This $20 price point for LVPS-2 is convenient, because it's the same price at MT, which I'm barely skimming by on. Site #1 is a personal blog with one email account, powered by PHP and MySQL. Site #2 is a company website and blog, powered by RoR, but not much database load. It would, however, run Subversion and browse it with Warehouse, a RoR SVN browser. This would probably be the main offender as everything SVN would be managed and run from here. Site #3 is a software website in RoR, all downloads would be from Site #2's SVN server. It has forums, a bug tracker, a plugin/theme browser, and a development blog, and everything else is just (R)HTML. Site #4 is another personal site, with one email account.

Getting Lots Of Data Off A Dedicated Server...
I have a project (using multiple servers) that has generated 3TB of data (compressed), with another .5TB or so each month, and the hard drives on my servers are very close to capacity. The data doesn't need to be accessible online, so I'm trying to find a low cost way to deal with this data. Keeping the data on dedicated server(s) raises the monthly cost every few months, which isn't good. Transferring that much data to my location via the Internet is costly and inconvenient. I'm thinking the best option would be to find a host that can ship hard drives to me, after I copy data over. Does anyone know if that is something that hosting companies are willing to do?

Which Virtualization For Desktop
This is a little bit Offtopic here but maybe it's okay to ask my question. For my GUI software development i need a virtual server solution. It must run WinXP, WinVista, LinuxI386, LinuxAMD64, FreeBSDI386, FreeBSDAMD64 and Solaris. I'm currently running VMWare with all this systems. But their KVM tools are very instable - especially when waking up from hibernate etc. They eat the key/mouse focus and the only way to get any reaction is often a hard shutdown. How good are the other Virtualization Kits? I heared that FreeBSD does not work on VirtualBox? I'm especially interested in Xen but i'm not sure if this is good for Desktop use. Seems that it is promoted almost exclusively as a server solution.

Apache X Virtualization
We usually find some constrains using Apache/cpanel (1.3.41). Basically, we serve simple php codes and few images. We usually setup our server to use lighttpd for static content and apache for dynamic content. Ok, due to some complex requirements on mod_rewrite we use that setup. But frequently we see our apache reaches it limit and slow down with 0 idle servers. Specially as we have about 270 requests/per second on apache. Our load is low, barely passes 1,2 of load for small periods, our memory ok, our I/O is fine. But we almost always reaches the 0 idle servers. Until now, our best config was: Timeout between 60-120 KeepAlive Off MaxKeepAliveRequests 1000 KeepAliveTimeout 15 MinSpareServers 50 MaxSpareServers 200 StartServers 50 MaxClients 256 MaxRequestsPerChild 80 As we clearly see that our server is under usage, I was wondering if it's a limitation on Apache or if I put virtualization on my server and run two apache webservers as cluster I would get better results. So what do you think about guys? It's a matter of optimization (what could I do better for this httpd.conf setup?) ? Or cluster with virtualization would deliver what I'm looking for.

I have 2 options to choose and I'm not pretty sure which is better. a) Win 2008 32bits Enterprize using PAE for ram support and running Mdaemon 32 and Mysql 32. b) Win 2008 64bits standard having virtualized a win 2008 64 bits for Mysql 64 and a win 2008 32 bits for MDaemon 32.

SSH Or Program How To File Replace Lots Of Files
I have anywhere between 80,000 - 90,000 webpages that have a single code into this. Unfortunately at the time the web developer I used didn't use PHP includes. So each .html file has the code in it. I want a way so I can do a single command either a program or an SSH command can find the syntax in the files and replace it will code I have. Its just a single line of code that is basically for an adsense code, so the pub-blahblahblah etc.. Does anyone know of a SSH command I can use, or a program that will find and replace without manually opening up each file? 80k - 90k of opening files then find/replace will take forever!

Suitable UK Linux Hosting Packages For Lots Of Small Sites
Does anyone know of a hosting Linux package (must be UK based) that has the usuals (PHP, MySQL, subdomains, email, Apache ModRewrite) that is geared towards hosting lots of low bandwidth sites? I use several great hosters but they limit the amount of addon domains or charge you through the roof for extra ones. I'm thinking a package that will let me do 15 - 25 domains. More would be a bonus. The bandwidth allowance is not a problem. A lot of my customers' sites use less than 100 MB a month.

Dnsreport Goes Pay Only - Alternatives?
One of my favorite web tools, dnsreport dot com, has gone pay only apparently Is there any other service that is as close to advanced with the nice breakdown it does? Perhaps some tool I can install on one of my own servers? I know the super skilled will says oh just run this, that and the other command line tool for the same info but I really liked the way they did it and how it explained the details.

Network Solutions - Would You Pay To Go Elsewhere
I impulsively signed up for 2 years of web-hosting at Network Solutions @ $89 /year, thinking I was covered by their 30 day money back guarantee. Normally I due a little research but I was actually calling them about another matter and made an (uncharacteristic) impulse decision, thinking I was covered by the money back guarantee. Reading the fine print today, their user agreement says it will cost $24.95 per contract year (x2) to cancel. In addition to this bit of marketing shenanigans, a additional bit of research seems to indicate that they are not exactly a "preferred host" among experienced users. Q's - Is it worth $50 to walk away from NetSol and start fresh with a new host? Although I'm a newb with simple hosting needs, I still get just a frustrated with poor customer as the next guy. Am I likely to encounter any added grief, compared to other hosting options, by staying with NetSol? FWIW - I will need hosting for four small sites, two that are nothing more than "multi page" splash pages and two will be new vBulletin powered sites. The vBulletin sites will start simple, but hopefully progress as my skills and traffic grow. While I recognize my needs are modest by any standard, I don't want my learning curve with vBulletin (and as a first time Site Administrator) to be hampered by a mediocre host and/or customer service.

Can You Actually Pay Monthly For Your Hosting
I've only ever been with 2 hosts, so I'm not that experienced with web hosting. But I notice everybody gives a monthly price, but the 2 host's I've used I have payed the yearly sum. When I first got my host I was 16 and it was quite a bit of money, I could afford the monthly price, but It was a shock to have it all taken in one go. Is there anywhere out there that you can choose to actually pay monthly, or is it done yearly to avoid the hasstle of setting up a server for someone who after one month decides not to continue paying?
