Virtual Private Server (VPS) Providers: Which Virtualization Implementation?
I'am curious which (semi) virtualization implementations you use, and why! Just out of interest...
- VMWare Infrastructure 3
- VMWare ESXi
- VMWare Server
- Virtuozo
- OpenVZ
- XEN
- Linux vserver
- FreeBSD jails
- append the list, if I forgot some
What have been the reasons for your decision? Where do you see disadvantages using other than your choice?

List Of Dedicated Providers With Private Or Virtual Private Racks
I am currently with the planet and am happy with them, however as part of a new venture I need to gather a list of hosts as well as the planet that will be able to cater to the ventures needs and go to tender with the requirements. ThePlanet offer something called a virtual rack. This is cheaper than renting a dedicated rack, allows for Gb networking but doesnt not allow for a SAN. Do other providers offer something similar? The cost of putting a machine on the virtual rack is not that much more expensive than just renting the machine. I guess there isn't too much to these set-ups to be fair. If not, then we are looking for dedicated racks, with the ability to host a SAN at some point, but starting off with say 3 servers (2 web servers, 1 storage server with raid5 6Tb of hdd). These servers will be dealing with network cameras although I don't think that many will be streaming at once but the network capacity does need to be there. Who's door should I be knocking on to find out some prices? One final thing, should I bother looking for co-lo providers as well? We are in the Uk but not precious about our host being in the same country at all (it would be nice but uk prices are ££). Really, all we would be able to do with co-lo is buy the hardware outright to save price as we are not interested in looking after the hardware.

Suggestions For Virtual Private Server (VPS)
I am "simply" looking to run a Joomla! community site with an estimated 250 - 500 and then eventually up to 1,000 users onine at one time. The main attraction will be the user forums and profiles. I don't plan on having any videos or anything like that, but I will install a mambot that will integrate Google Video, etc. I am trying to pick a VPS provider and from what I have read so far, I have kind of narrowed it down to a few places: Spry.com vpslink.com knownhost.com mediatemple.net From reading alot so far, I would imagine I would need at least 256-512MB of RAM. Plesk sounds like a good control panel since I won't be reselling any of the space. Webmin sounds too hands on, and I know a little bit, but not a lot. The backup option that comes with Spry.com sounds tempting, but VPSLink has attractive price points. Mediatemple.net also gives you 1TB of bandwidth, a very attractive option. I am "simply" looking to run a Joomla! community site with an estimated 250 - As long as the site can run MySQL, I am happy. Joomla!, statistics software (any suggestions) and WordPress and that is about it as far as applications. Any suggestions on what plans or who I should go with? My budget is about $t50 a month.

Slow Virtual Private Server (VPS)
The subject line pretty much sums up my major problem. My site has been intermittently slow (somtimes slow, sometimes not) for... like since I can remember. So my site isn't that big Sometimes for me it takes forever to load a vbulletin page, or even the main page of the site. I thought I had found the problem (a mysql-intensive script), removed it, improved things quite a bit, but there is still a long way to go! Many site users report the same exact things. "The site is sloowww" ... "It wasn't slow yesterday but it is today" ... "Today it's really fast, but last week I was having problems pulling up pages". Its fustrating becase this is a VPS, and although I know how to use Cpanel, WHM is really big and I am not sure what I could do to speed up my website or to even begin to locate any potential problems. My site is basically Joomla CMS, vBulletin BBS and 4images image gallery. The later two use a common user database. My current mysql usage is 327.55MB in total. Apache 1.3.34, PHP 4.4.1 and MySQL 4.1.19-standard. Powered by WHM/Cpanel & Virtuozzo. What should I do? Where can I start? Where can I look?

Very Cheap Virtual Private Server (VPS)?
I'm just wondering if people could point me in the direction of cheap VPS's - like under $10/month, but ideally nearer $5/month if such a thing exists.. I'm looking for one to host slave DNS so I obviously want it to be fast and reliable but I dont need it to be 100% mega reliable in the sense that an outage here and there wouldn't be the end of the world as there will be no web sites hosted on it. What is the cheapest VPS out there?

Dedicated Or (VPS) Virtual Private Server?
At the moment I run a small membership site. The site mainly consists of creating, downloading a lot of files using fwrite (Based on what the user enters). Last months stats were just under 30GB of data transferred. I'm currently with HostGator Business Plan ($12.99/month). I run a LOT of database connections per minute. I am looking to increase the size of my membership site at which point it will be likely that I am running at least 1 DB connection per second. Can anyone recommend me a decent priced VPS/Dedicated server for my needs? The usage will probably be around 50GB/month. HostGator have shutdown my site a couple times last month due to excessive number of running processes (Limited to 25) so I have decided to leave them.

Customized Virtual Private Server (VPS)
I am completely new to VPS. Currently I have a website on shared hosting, but I'm starting getting problems with it: more precisely CPU exceeded and "slow MySql queries" problems - though MySql code is top notch. Traffic is about 100 G a month, and users' number growing day by day. It seems I do need a VPS now. But since I am all new, I need to ask if a VPS account provides: - MySql databases - Cron jobs - etc. Basically, this question translates into this: does a VPS account offer everything else a shared hosting offers, and in addition guaranteed ram? PS: I do need a CPU guarantee (don't know the exact name) meaning that if my processes get close to RAM limit, all processes are automatically diminished so that the site is still running... very slowly but running... (rather than killing the site)PS: I tried to find the VPS offers link as I am trying to get to see the current VPS offers of several companies, but can't find it. Do you mind giving the link? Thank you, and sorry for the mess... I know I might be a pain in the a**, but I've got to ask in order to learn... You guys had a starting point as well, right?

How To Setup A VPS (Virtual Private Server)
I have a dedicated server with iWeb, but due to revenues being cut short, I'm in search for a new host. Possibly a VPS host that isn't expensive or a shared host. Anyways.. I'm looking for a good host (nothing like the oversellers at Dreamhost) that would work for me. I'd be hosting some domains-- about 10. Three are majorly active, 1 is moderately active, and the others are hardly active. I've tried Dreamhost's shared hosting (along with a PS from them) and that night (my first night with them), their servers went down. HostRefugee, tried them, the server couldn't handle the load and was quite slow. (may be due to coding) So yeah, suggestions? I know how to setup a VPS if needed.

Memory Issues On JaguarPC VPS. Suggestions? Recommend A Virtual Private Server (VPS)
I recently moved my site from a shared hosting plan at $5 a month to a VPS at JaguarPC. I took advantage of one of the offers here at Web Host Talk. My setup has cPanel with 320MB of RAM. I have another site running the same software (Joomla, vBulletin) with cPanel and only 256MB of RAM at KnownHost. I've had zero problems with Knownhost and the site is snappy. The site hosted at JaguarPC continues to have all kinds of problems. Running a number of sites, I don't always get to check in on my sites unless I know of a problem. I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention to this site, because it was having all types of PHP memory issues. When I first contacted JaguarPC, they said they boosted the memory in Apache. The issues remained, so I contacted them again. They recommended more RAM. Now, I checked on my KnownHost site and that's running on 256MB. I figured that maybe JaguarPC didn't allocate enough RAM when they set up the VPS. They confirmed 320MB. Not wanting to change hosts, I asked them to poke around a bit more, considering what I know about KnownHost and my success there. I received this response: have checked and you are running named service on your server. named caches dns data and this can also consume a lot of memory, sometimes over a 100 MB may be consumed by this service. In addition to cPanel and named which are most memory consuming applications running on your server, there are other applications like apache web server and the php scripts running on the server also consume some memory. It is highly recommended that you upgrade the RAM on your VPS significantly to avoid such problems which may cause disruption of service. You can find a list of RAM and other VPS addons in the following link. Instead of helping me resolve the problem, they simply keep asking me to get more RAM. For SEO purposes, I like to keep my sites on different hosts. Can anyone recommend a VPS? I was certainly unaware that "named service" had such an impact on my VPS. If that's the case, is there any harm in not having this? SEO or otherwise?

Virtual Private Server (VPS) Or Shared Hosting?
Hi, is anyone know the advantage of VPS hosting vs shared hosting? I found a cheap VPS plan at in2net.com. I can get 15G space, 200G bandwidth and 256 RAM for $9.95 a month. My site starts getting a lot of users, it might be an issue with shared hosting. My site also hosts a forum, and currently has 1000 unique visitors and 8000 pageviews daily. Sometime the forum has 30-50 concurrent members. So, I'm just wondering in my case, wihch one would you choose, VPS or shared hosting? since they are the same price. I don't know how to manage servers, but my friend has a unmanaged server at theplanet, and he hasn't managed the server at all since he had it. So, if a VPS host comes with all the scripts installed, in this case, it doesn't require any management, am I right? oh, one more quesiton, is the plesk control panel works like whm panel? where each client has his own control panel?

AquariusStorage Virtual Private Server (VPS) Review
Since ditching the sinking boat known as the USS Hostchum, I found AquariusStorage. Initially I wasn't all that interested in their service as the VPS offerings were something new that Aquarius was doing and I had no clue as to how overloaded their servers were (OpenVZ based). After having the a4 package (1GB dedicated RAM, 1.2GB burst) for a few weeks now, I forget that I'm even on a VPS! Ryan has been there for everything, even the small issues that he had no reason to help me fix (unmanaged). From my initial live chat with him, he never lied about any of the specs and went as far as telling me that they had *just* opened up their VPS offerings. Have read plenty of positive things about AS's shared/resellering services and thought meh, lets give them a try. No matter what I throw at the VPS, it handles it as if its a bug hitting the windshield of my rocket. Support: 10/10, replies were within 30 minutes, if there wasn't a reply then the issue was already fixed. Had a DDoS on the node I was on around midnight, Ryan was up and on the issue before I even got a ticket in to him (I was up late working on the VPS and noticied probably within a minute of the DDoS happening). Uptime: To date, 100% uptime of the node (with the exception of the DDoS, which was dealt with within 20 minutes). Performance: WOW! Ryan and the guys at Aquarius sure know how to build a VPS node! Nothing but praise for the service I'm getting. Fairly certain they aren't overloading their nodes either as they have had plenty of time to pack my node to the fullest since I've had service with them, and it still performs just as it did when I bought it, heck its better! Orignal unixbench results were in the 220's, one I ran this morning reported 370 Overall: Ryan knows his stuff and the support is above excellent. If you're looking for a professional host, look no further! Personally, I'll be upgrading to the a6 package as soon as I have a need.

Simultaneous Download Speeds On Virtual Private Server (VPS)
I just got a VPSlink account about a month ago and for all testing purposes, it has been great so far [my first VPS]. But I haven't transferred my main site to it yet mainly due to one specific question about download speeds. Quickly, here's what I've found about their network... VPSLink is owned by Spry, so from all I can tell, they're using the same network speeds. Which are: Unmetered: 1.5 megabits per sec in total traffic. Metered: Spry's site says "throughput of up to 8Mbps" Ok, so here's what I'm trying to find out: I'm running a small software business with some downloads (all legal of course - they're mine ) and would like to know what the real-world download speeds that users would normally see when downloading my files. Here are the knowns: a) Let's assume for this question that all of the user computer's are on very quick connections, so their speed wouldn't be an issue. b) An example file would be say, 20 MB. I'm most looking to see how speeds would be (in Kbps) if say, 20 people are downloading a 20 MB file at the same time (again, with their connections being extremely fast; fast enough for the sake of this example to not be a factor - so the max speed would only depend on my VPSlink server's connection). I don't know of a good way to really test this since I only have access to 1 physical connection. I did try a test with a friend. Here's what happened: I normally get about 500-600kbps sustained on my cable modem, as does my friend. When downloading a test file on my server I was able to get about that when downloading all alone. But, when my friend and I downloaded it at the same time, both of us got around 350kbps -- so the total speed about dropped in half. Again since my site is for software downloads, and when releasing an update to one of our products, sometimes I'm guessing 20+ users download simultaneously for a couple days. This currently seems to work ok on Dreamhost, but for many other reasons, we're needing a VPS. But would this vastly decrease our file transfer download speeds to users? If users got something horrible like 2kbps, that would most certainly loose a lot of business for us since they'd just get frustrated and cancel for the most part. Does anyone know of a rough estimate on how to figure this out, or even better, are there any VPSLink customers out there that have experience with this?

Shared Hosting RAM Vs Virtual Private Server (VPS) RAM
I have a reseller shared hosting plan that allows for 50 sub-accounts and I'm using about 20. I am looking at getting a VPS with between 256 - 394 mb RAM and am wondering if I were to move all of my accounts to the new VPS would I be ending up with less RAM to use for all of my sites. To put this another way how do most reseller plans manage RAM usage? Do each of my sub-accounts have access to say 64 mb RAM so that if I were to use all 50 sub accounts I would have access to 50*64 mb. From what I've experienced and read with shared hosting my thought is I could end up with less access to server resources, CPU and RAM, with a VPS plan - though with VPS the resources are more guaranteed rather than being dependent on the usage of other accounts on the server. The reason I am looking at a VPS account is that I have a site that will likely have 1000s of users with a server intensive script (Moodle) and I know it would violate the reseller account agreement. So maybe my plan should be to keep the reseller account and use it for my database driven sites and use the VPS for the server intensive site and my html based sites. Also, my VPS choice seems to be narrowed down to Liquidweb, JaguarPC and Zone - has anybody heard of any negative experiences with Liquidweb? I can't find any.
