Good Free Panel Or Really Cheap Ones

Dec 20, 2007

Other then webmin and virtualmin are there any other decent free panels out there?

I was looking at some of the pricing on some of the panels out there and their pricing models. Direct Admin seems to be the cheapest with 9 dollars a month (if you qualify that is.) Is that pretty much as low as it will get? I would think there might be some that are cheaper then that depending on the bulk size and others.

Looking For Good Cheap ASP.NET Shared Hosting

Jan 17, 2009

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on good, cheap, ASP.NET web hosting companies preferably in the 5-7$/month range. I have a tiny site, but a lot of email, so having a few gigs of storage space would be nice. Bandwidth has never been an issue in the past, but the more the merrier. Support for the newest .NET stuff would be highly desirable (.NET 3.5, preferably win2008 servers, maybe a MSSQL db?)

Cheap Host With Good Customer Service

Jun 30, 2008

I am creating a basic static site for my friend's gardening business. It will use html and CSS only, be around 5MB at most and does not require any databases, php support etc.

My problem is that he wants to basically have the site up and running and then be able to forget about it really. I will be going on now and again to update it for him, but that is about it. My experience with free hosts is limited, I have used byethost before, and though very good, they do require a log on every week else they assume the site is no longer wanted and delete the account and all files!

So, my requirements are:
Free host that easily allows to have your own domain name
Email address with the company domain, so quotes@domain.com, not quotes@domain.host.com
Cheap
Good customer service
Need no more than 20MB (allow for some extra photos to be added)
UK Based would be preferable

Free Control Panel

May 12, 2007

I'm on dedicated server/[Os-fedora, php5 installed] and going to install any free control panel (as i don't have more experience of working via ssh), which can give me chance to do this:

1. setup domain (primary) and add domains [too]
2. setup nameservers to IP
3. setup cronjob
4. add new mysql database/db_user/

... and of course be user friendly. i don't going to have users, give hosting, it's just for me. and don't eat much resources :-)

can u suggest any control panel?

i try to know price for plesk and DA, but unfortunately don't find any information [on theis sites] how much they are ?

DA is my favorite panel, but as told my hoster their price is increased, that's why is search any free panel

Good Free Hosting For A Freeware Application

May 23, 2009

I have developed a small application that I want to put somewhere online so that people can download it and use it for free. I'm not much into free hosting so maybe some of you could recommend a good solution. This will be a 2-3 MB download but I don't think there will be any huge traffic. I know sourceforge.net offers hosting for open source software but I don't know yet if I want to make it open source. Preferrably, I would like a web host with a decent likelihood that my address will not change, no overintrusive ads and somewhat reliable. Or perhaps there are dedicated sites for hosting free programs that would better suit my needs?

Why Is Cheap Colo More Expensive Than Cheap Dedicated?

Oct 19, 2007

This is probably a dumb question, but I've been curious about something. While shopping around for either a cheap dedicated server (less than $75/mo) or a cheap colo for a 1u server, I have noticed that the cheap dedicated servers are often less than a cheap colo, which seems odd to me since with a colo you bring your own machine.

For example, Sago Networks has cheap dedicateds for $50, $59, $79 etc. yet their cheapest colo option is $99. For Sago's $50 dedicated you get 1000GB transfer and 2 IP's, and with their $99 colo you get only get 100 GB transfer and 1 IP.

And Sago is not unusual in this respect. I've priced other providers that fall into this category and they have similar differences.

So why is colo more expensive than dedicated for similar, if not lower, features?

List Of Good Hosters With Good TELEPHONE Tech Support

May 6, 2008

I'd like to start an ongoing thread here listing the 'Good Hosters with Good TELEPHONE tech support'. In other words, out of the 1,000s of host companies, this may cut it down to less than a dozen.

( And for all you Hosters out there who really want your company to grow, and want to know how, - it's easy: just read here.)

Good telephone support is the #1 ultimate requirement, because:

-It's a lot faster and easier for both the user and the host company, because you can state and answer all questions and clarifications on the spot, you don't need to continually pass new emails with new questions and clarifications, back and forth for days on end, until the issue is solved. It saves tech time and user's time. And saves a lot of nerves.

- It's the best way to sort the good guys from the bad. A bad company isn't going to bother to answer the phone, - or will make you wait way too long, - because they are likely getting endless complaints. The good guys are always ready to answer the phones, with a friendly voice, - because they really WANT to please the customer.

- If a company can't be bothered to pick up the phone, we can't be bothered to even consider them. They're a joke, and so won't be listed here on this thread. (So, before adding or listing any Hosters here, please verfify that they do have Good, quick, friendly, telephone support,; ideally 24/7, but 9am to 10pm might be acceptable, if it was supplemented by some emergency contact.
AND:

- Hoster ALSO needs good EMAIL support (and preferably, Chat online, extended hour availability). (I spend a lot of time overseas). It sems all emails should get a non-automated response within about an hour, - and then support should jump on fixing any problem.

I only need support a few times a year. To answer some questions, or fix a problem, or do an install. That's lesss than 1 hour total, so any company paying maybe $18/hour tech support should be able to handle this. It IS reasonable to charge a custm for extended calls, beyond say, 90minutes a year, IF you don't count the 80%? Of times an issue is the Hoster;s fault of stmg gone wrong, and don't count the 'hold' times.

ALSO IMPORTANT:
- Uptime
- site Speeds
- Monthly plans, no contract (Only a dishonest host will try to force you into a contract, where they can then ignore you.)
- Reasonable price. (? Maybe $12 to $18/month for a basic business site. We don't need massive bandwitdths, - we all know that's an overselling scam, and can't ever be delivered.)
- a good upgrade plan of bigger options. Maybe even VPS.
- Dedicated IP, and availbility of SSL
-PHP 5, mysql, phpMyAdmin, etc
- cPanel ( Some Hosts are using problematic panels, like Hsphere, which are slow to load, slow in operation, require many more clicks, have too many options, spread apart on many separate pages. Time is money, and this really slows down the ability of a small business to manage his own site in effective time. For example, one WHT user wrote somewhere: "I don't feel that HSphere's interface is nice at all, although I have worked with cPanel and DA all my life... I just found it to include un-necessary features or split features up in to different hard to find pages, such as backups - mysql backups you had to find on a completely different page than file backups, and then there were options to have it in the home directory or server-end backup, in which then you had to wait a good 10 minutes before it was ready. cPanel, just hit backup and hit download and instantly it does everything you need...".

I have used several hosters. Currently on Aplus.net and Godad, which have phone support, and mediocre service.

My LIST So Far:
- Liquidweb: a very impressive company with good, 24 hour support. But to get dedicated IP, you need to go with their $25/month plan. Yikes!
- NewIdeaHosting.com. A very small company. My call was returned, and the owner chatted with me for an hour on the phone! Plans have small bandwidth, but promises No overselling, and personalized attention. Extra $5 for dedi IP. He specializes in Small business sites, and small eCommerce sites. He has only 250 accounts, on 3 servers. He rents servers from the Equinox data center of Chicago. Seems exceptionaly honest.
- MegaHosters. Excellent phone support and WHT reviews. But company was taken over by another company, and so may well go downhill in future. Another problem: uses Hsphere.
- Steadfast. Has a good rep on WHT, and seems impressive. Tech answered the phone immediately, but they say they prefer emails. Sales phone has limited hours. Good price on $20 SSL. But, uses Hshhere.
- JodoHost 24 hour phone. But, uses Hsphere. An Indian company with office in Florida, and good rep. I like the idea of outsourcing phone support, if it makes it more available and affordable. But, the accent on the phone was very hard for me to understand, so maybe this might not work.....
- Hostgator. Yes, it's a big overseller, but seems to get good reviews/results anyway, and good phone support.
- ? ThePrimeHost ?? Mostly good WHT reviews; some dissenters. Site says 24hour phone, but when I called on several nights, no one ever answered...
- Can anyone add to this list? Please list only hosts that meet the above minimum requirements of phone support, etc. Especially useful is hosters you've tried.
TO AVOID:
- Avoid Arvixe. I had a horrid experience with them, here: [WHT forum]:/showthread.php?p=5097822#post5097822
- Avoid WebHostingBuzz. This company never returned my phone msessage inquiries.

Plesk Vs. C-Panel / Control Panel

Oct 11, 2007

I indicated that I've basically been using my webhosting company as "file storage".

1) I create all my files in .html using notepad

2) My files are limited to .html, .jpg, .gif, (and a couple of .js and .css) files.

3) My domain is not connected with my webhost; I use the nameserver zoneedit.com and I use URL forwarding and mask/cloak the domain the address bar (using multiple domains) as follows:

domain1.com --> forwards to [url]

domain2.com --> forwards to [url]

domain3.com --> forwards to [url]

4) For uploading files, I go to ftp://123.456.78 and drop/drag/copy/paste files into the window using my browser

5) I'm able to password protect the subdirectories as I choose.

---------------

I called my webhost, Hostik, and told them that I was unable to do anything on my web console. I can't change a password, create a user, or even access my usage/bandwidth quotas.

They told me that I'm on an "old server" using the windows-based console (probably C-Panel / Control Panel) and they're in the process over the next three months of transfering everyone over to "Plesk".

So, they set me up with a new Plesk account, while keeping the old one in place, so that I could move/transfer my files to the Plesk account.

When I went to Plesk, I realized things are not the same:

1) In my Control Panel / C-Panel, I had a unique IP URL Address - [url]

2) In Plesk, it seems there's a set IP URL Address - [url] - that everyone shares.

3) I was told that in Plesk, many people use that IP URL address and that I'm supposed to place my files into the "httpdocs" folder.

Appearently, this is a system of shared hosting whereby many people have the same IP URL address (different from what I had before) and it recognizes each account by the login or something, so the "httpdocs" folder would identify my domain.

I was then told that in Plesk, I must have my domain affixed to the Plesk account.

In other words, I can no longer do what I was doing before, having my domain separated in another location and using URL forwarding from an outside nameserver.

--------------------------

So, my original question is what's the difference between Plesk vs. C-Panel/Control Panel?

Perhaps I answered most of it above.

Is it correct that I can't do things the way I've been doing them so far if that's the case?

It might be that Plesk is not for me and I may need to find a host that gives me my own unique IP URL Address. However, I was informed that not many companies are doing that as most are switching over to Plesk.

In addition, Hostik does not offer multiple domains.

In response to this thread, David recommended I try synhosting.com

synhosting.com has "Multiple Websites". I assume this means mulitiple domains. Correct?

What's my best option at this point?

1) Find a host that has C-Panel / Control Panel (if any there are)?

2) Use a service such as synhosting.com and move all my domains over to them?

3) If I do use synhosting.com, am I required to move my domains over to their nameservers?

4) I have my MX Mail records pointing to Fastmail.fm for my email virtual domains. Would I still be able to do this if my domain is dedicated to a webhost and opt not to use their email feature?

5) Should I get rid of this old-school thought of using my web host as "file storage" and stop this practice of using URL forwarding and cloaking?

RAM For Cheap

Feb 6, 2009

I am shopping for servers with 32-64GB of RAM and the typical list price of $10/gbyte is not in line with reality (ie 4GB ECC DDR2 RAM can be bought for 70 bucks). I saw WebNX special offers between 2-300 dollars for 32GB machines, now that's more like it but, I cant really rely on special offers on the long run.

As my application will be frontended by a CDN, network quality is somewhat less of an issue. Reliability and price is. So who be good a choice for machines with lots of RAM? (almost obviously, AMD, Intel uses FB-DIMM and I am not inclined to pay through my nose for that) I guess WebNX is one,

then either cpanel or directadmin, not bothered really but since i really want to keep prices low it will probably end up being direcadmin unless there are any other options?

i am not bother for support really so unmanaged is fine although i do want the ability to do remote reboots from hypervm or something.
