SoftLayer / ThePlanet Equivalent In Europe

Oct 12, 2008

I am looking for a good dedicated server provider in Europe. Ideally I am looking for something similar to softlayer or theplanet but in the EU.

three things that are important for us and do not seem to be offered by many providers:

- Ability to do automated secure (connection initiated by the backup device) offsite backups via eVault or r1soft.

- Ability to add additional servers in the future (e.g. separate db server) as part of our "internal" network (this is: any traffic between our servers would count as internal traffic and not against our bandwith limits). E.g. Softlayer by default and for free gives you your own virtual private network and you can add new servers as need arises.

- ability to upgrade configurations and have the ability to customize our hardware setup.

other than the above we need cPanel/whm, a trustworthy company, good support, option for managed or unmanaged service.

any suggestions?

Pemium Shared Hosting - Anywhere Similar To MediaTemple

Jun 11, 2009

I have a wordpress based website hosted at mediatemple.net, I am very happy there but recent functionality I added has casued a big increase in cron processing - MT limits the number of GPU's you can have a month to 1000 and I will exceed this. I think I will have to move off as their other offerings are much more expensive

As someone who ran and sold a web host in the past the first thing I did was search here for peoples views, as im out of the loop on whats new - but wasnt too happy with the results

I am after managed shared hosting as I dont have the time to deal with vps or dedicated

budget of about $30 a month unless something special is out there

24/7 Phone support and live chat support
1500 GPU / Month (Grid Performance Unit) - if monitored

Mediatemple Or ThePlanet?

Jul 15, 2008

I am going to begin a social network and for the beginning I just need 100 gb hard disk, 2 ram, 200 TB monthly. I need a web hosting with potential for big traffic and scalability in the near future.

I have read what people from big social networks have said about both companies and they can handle big traffic, though mediatemple has better ranked costumers than the plannet according to Alexa (I checked one by one of their big clients in Alexa.)

My website is going to be about video streaming, webcam streaming and other common things in social networks.

What do you recommend? Do you have a better company in mind that can handle big traffic and scalability?

My budget is between 500 up to 800 monthly?

English Friendly Hosts With Servers In Continental Europe

Aug 29, 2008

I have a handful of short-term projects that require me to have webspace on servers in France, Germany, and Spain. Unfortunately, I don't know any European languages other than English.

Can anyone suggest web hosts with servers in France, Germany, or Spain that are friendly to English-speakers? That is, a website with an English-translated interface and ideally billing/support in English.

Softlayer Support Vs Theplanet Support

Jul 12, 2008

I'm undecided between an upcoming dedicated hosting server and am moving between Softlayer and ThePlanet. My decision partly comes down to support.

I've read many reviews on WHT about both companies, but not necessarily comparing them from people who have experienced both.

So my questions (keep in mind this is my first dedicated. I have used VPS in the past with good support) Which offers MORE support (not better) - I'm curious which company might consider my support questions as "part of the default service package" or "need additional service plan for that" More detailed support - my usual experience with support is support staff assume you already know a high level so it may take going forward and back 5 times via email to get a full answer
Overall support satisfaction - any other comments

Not All IPs At Equal Speed On Our Rack

Mar 27, 2007

Where I'm certain that this is a gateway issue, perhaps experience will prevail, where someone having experienced a similar circumstance will have a solution.

We have a box, running CentOS 4.3 (64 bit) that has an 8-block at LayeredTech through ZipServers. Strangely enough, two of the IPs are operating at a reduced speed!

To test the matter, we've posted a file shared across all IPs (/var/www/html/testfile.gz), and when downloading through different IPs, the speeds are different.

For example (fictitious file links):

72.232.186.42/testfile.gz (DL at 350k/sec)
72.232.186.43/testfile.gz (DL at 350k/sec)
72.343.186.44/testfile.gz (DL at 350k/sec)
72.232.186.45/testfile.gz (DL at 70k/sec)
72.232.186.46/testfile.gz (DL at 70k/sec)

Further, this isn't related to Apache, as FTP is affected in the exact same manner. If we FTP into the machine using a same account, but with different IPs as hostnames, the download speeds differ just as the HTTP downloads do.

PowerVPS CPU Equal Sharing

Sep 22, 2007

I'm a PowerVPS client. I have 3 VPS servers with them, CPANEL POWER-1, POWER-2 and POWER-3

I was very satisfied client, until today. Let me start from the beginning.

Websites on one of my VPS servers (POWER-2) were loading really long, even logging in to cPanel/WHM took me like 8-10 seconds. I didn't use this VPS before, I contacted tech support and they said MySQL and Apache were set to default and have to be optimized, so they did optimize it. I've copied same website to 3 servers. Performance on POWER-1 and POWER-3 was great. I decided to try if that apache/mysql optimization really helped and test it for couple days to see if I got the same problem. After couple hours I got back to them becase performance on POWER-2 was still horrible. Couple hours later, I got an email saying that this issue has been resolved. It said "there was a VPS on your node that was using up excessive amounts of CPU cycles". Until today I was sure that VPS uses "EQUAL CPU SHARE". If other VPS's owners can affect performance of our VPS server, and memory or CPU is not equally shared, what's the point of using Virtual Dedicated Servers over cheap low quality shared hosting accounts? Does PowerVPS lie to us or I misunderstand idea of VPS?

Switching To VM From Dedicated - Equal, Better Or Worse

May 5, 2008

I run several leased dedi machines....have for over a decade now.

I use a couple different places, and now, actually looking to consolidate to one.

This is more due to my growth than anything else.

So one of my providers, recently moved me from a Dedicated machine (very very old - i mean P4's were NEW when i got it)
to a VM setup.

I ended up looking to replace that machine with another (which i did in a diff thread last week)

I have finally heard back from them and amazingly, they are insisting that this situation is "better" and "cheaper" than a dedicated

Mind you i was on a p4 with about half gig memory. Now I am on something with Gigs of Ram and Multiple Xeons with quad cores etc etc etc

For this server, none of that is needed, the box worked great for 5 years, with no need to change hardware...and the system never got taxed. Its a development machine.

ALl that is just background

My question is...am I so out of touch that VM is actually BETTER than Dedicated...or at least EQUAL...and its a waste to have a dedi, when you can have VM with "root" access?

I run windows boxes for these...

what about 3rd party apps, and controllers?

They claim todays top VM technology (when placed on their new 10k boxes) is superior to dedicated...so much so they are switching ALL customers to VM

now I know all the benefits to the HOST for putting clients on VM

those are obvious

Butam I so old fashioned to think its just the "house" versus "condo" situation

its still SHARED...its not dedicated to my needs only..and someone elses actions can effect my own! right?

Or is it a new age, and nobody needs a dedicated box anymore, because we have entered the golden age of hosting?

I asked, has VM become perfect? He said "its near-perfect, nothing anyone else can do will effect you, you have nothing to worry about and we can get an image of you up from RAID instantly in case of drive failure."

Mar 18, 2008

I was using theplanet for "the other datacenter", but their prices are much more expensive than 15ms as far as I check

I'd need some config like:
Xeon 3.06 Ghz, 1024 Megs, 200 GB SATA, RAID-1, FreeBSD 6.x
around $200/month

Hostgator Alternative With Similar Features

Feb 27, 2009

I am having many accounts with hostgator and have been using them for almost three years now. Their prices are good and service is good also (during the recent 6-8 months).

I am looking for some alternative shared hosting service.

We will need around 15 hosting accounts on different servers, with different dedicated IPs (which should be in different C Class).

For a similar plan (baby) with hostgator, i am spending $9.95 per month. I am looking at reducing the hosting costs.

Cpanel Hosting

Dedicated IPs (in different C Class)

4-8 domains to be hosted

MYSQL and PHP with some basic modules installed

What i am looking for is a reliable company with many servers, on which they can give me

small shared accounts, to host around 4-8 low traffic websites.

How To Create/host Similar Site

Jun 3, 2009

My son's have been ordering products from a Japanese website, and I would like to take it a step further and sell some of the products here in Florida. These products vary from shoes, clothes etc.

Basically, I am looking to create a website similar to theirs (gz-b2b.com) ~sorry if links are not allowed, I am not trying to promote them by an means, just trying to follow!~

I would like to register a domain, upload pictures that are organized by a category and have a dedicated email. no online e-checkout stuff, just straight pictures & subsections.

direct me to a cost effective (sub $5/month) webhosting solution, that has a quality web builder built in so I can basically just upload pics and organize sections.

Backup SMTP Or Something Similar Service

Feb 20, 2007

i found the service for backup of SMTP:

If your mail server or network goes down, our backup SMTP can receive and store your incoming e-mail for up to 30 days. E-mail and ecommerce orders will keep coming, giving your IT staff time to repair the problem. Our standard service reattempts delivery every 15 minutes until your mail server is back online.

Seems that is good decision if you want to provide quality services for your cusutmers, but i want to know your opinion regarding this service or similar. did you use services like this , and can you share some experience for this?

Reasonably Priced Colocation Provider With Similar Private Network As Soft Layer's

Jun 9, 2008

Is there a colo provider that has a free private network for use between their locations, similar to what SL has for their dedicated servers between facilities? They have 10GigE between their locations, with free unlimited usage.

We have around 40 servers now, and colo would really make sense, but we are doing multicasting stuff so we really need a backend network to support our services, as well as many locations for better delivery quality.

Universal Hosts (uni-hosts) Two Week Mini Review

Apr 2, 2008

I was in the market for a new dedicated server after a couple of years with my previous provider. The previous provider did nothing wrong but they were no longer competitive when it came to CPU and memory.

I moved first to geekrack. And I left them after a week and a half as they never were able to get my rDNS records setup.

I found Universal Hosts on this forum and gave them a shot. I had asked for an operating system that they didn't offer normally (Debian 64 bit) and they said that they could do it. However, when my server was setup it was 32 bit Debian instead. They apologized and had Debian 64 bit setup less than 24 hours later.

When I asked them to get rDNS records setup it took a few hours but they were setup correctly and they worked.

Universal Hosts is also a BurstNet reseller but compared to my other attempt at using a BurstNet reseller they are fantastic. While the initial config was incorrect they worked quickly to fix it and were very professional about it.

So after two weeks - so far so good. Keep up the good work UniHosts!

Apache :: Virtual Hosts With Windows 8 Hosts File

Aug 11, 2013

I am running Apache2.2, PHP5.I have been running with virtual hosts on a Windows 7 environment fine for a couple of years successfully, but have just had to move to a Windows 8 environment. It looks like Apache and PHP have installed and are working fine, but my Virtual hosts are now not being recognised. From what I can tell, it is the Windows 8 hosts file that is having a problem, as it looks as though it is now just setup to Block websites.

If I make the host file just have the one line127.0.0.1 localhost entry, then the very first Virtual Host from my apache config file will come up, but the rest are not found. If I put the usual 127.0.0.1 mywebsite.name aliasname is appears as though my website works momentarily and then is blocked..

Is Mediatemple Really That Bad

Jan 14, 2008

After almost 6 months of bad experience with our previous web hosting provider, we have decided to move to another one. One of our website's administrators have ended up ordering the ( gs )package from mediatemple which he finds affordable and suitable for our website (500-1000 uniques a day, powered by wordpress & SMF forums) .

Personally, this name (mediatemple) has been buzzing in my head long time ago (yep, they have created a lot of buzz in the internet. great marketers), that's why I didn't reject the idea of choosing them as our hosting provider.

But now, and after searching about them in WHT & google, I've found from your reviews that their gs package is horribly slow, unstable and totally a joke.

Are they really that bad? Have they improved their services since the date of the most bad reviews (few months ago) ? Will the website be damn slow/down again? I'm lost :-)
