Do A Lot Of Companies Throttle Your Uplink Port
Mar 1, 2008
Like for example, recently talked to liquidweb. They have a 100mbs uplink port on their servers, but they only let you use 30% of it. But you can upgrade at anytime. Is that normal for hosts to do that?

I'm new to linux and handling my dedicated server. I wanted to know how to setup a bandwidth cap/throttle for the users from my site. I wanted to limit the speeds to 300-400kb/s per user/IP. I've looked around but I haven't found anything really that solves my problem just scripts that protect CPU.

cPanel server with EXIM.
Seems the standard feature there - number of emails per hour limit is not working in this case of script emailing.
Any way to limit the number of emails sent via .php scripts or/and throttle this emailing speed cause in the case of spamer the server load hit the roof.

I'm not much of a co-location expert as we do not own our own equipment but a customer we help from time to time is asking me about this. They have a cabinet at theplanet and only a pair of redundant 100mbit uplinks coming into their cisco 2924 they rent from theplanet. Theplanet wants $350/mo along with $350 setup for a pair of redundant gigabit uplinks. Then another $225/mo for a Cisco Catalyst 2960G.
Does this at all seem reasonable to anyone? The switch can just be purchased so it's not that big of a deal. The uplink cost cannot be avoided though. If it's not reasonable obviously they can go back to their account manager to discuss it but I don't know what you'd expect to pay in Dallas for that.
Also before anyone suggests any other provider not an option. Last time they looked around theplanet was the only provider in dallas capable of handling the attacks. Others would just null route the IP's rather than trying to mitigate the attacks. So no point in making suggestions as it's been explored in the past.

What are the benefits of moving to faster uplink speeds? I'm considering upgrading from 10 to 100 Mbps. Does it only mean being able to send information faster or are response times improved as well?

Well i need for a week some provider who can setup a spare server/vps with 1000gps uplink , to maybe convince my college to get in contract and get better providers, instead of hosting the college site on our in-house machines. Since the loading speed of site is awful ! So am thinking of trying out for only a week the machine from that provider, and if am able to convince the department to maybe get into some contract with me (who in turn will be than using that provider for getting the server).
So if anyone around wht knows someone who has spare box for a week with 1000mbps uplink would be great.
Please note, no mysql is required, just simple apache, and no traffic, just 1 or 10 hits in the entire week.
I was told that there are some companies out there that provide universities free hosting, so if anyone is aware of such company do let me know please.

What kind of difference will I see between my server having a 10 vs. 100 vs. 1000 Mbps Uplink?
If I had to choose between 1000Mbps Uplink w/ 3000GB/mo BW or 10Mbps Uplink Unmetered, what should I take into consideration?
What will the impact to the customer be speedwise?

I recently purchased a new Dedi server, and got 100 MBPS Uplink. Now, I'm uploading 16GB size of files into this server, and I have a suspicious feeling that this upload speed is not what they told me. For the very 1st day, I opened a ticket and they said that they upgraded it to 100 mbps. I saw this speed was faster immediately. On 2nd day, it went down to around same slow speed before. Since then, I kept opening a new ticket and they said it was done, or sometimes I am under DDos attack..? What? I don't even have the site up yet! How come there is DDos attack?
Anyway, today I was told that I'm getting billed for this 100 mbps uplink, because it's a new service. What a crazy thing going on here... I am so tired of this ticket game and just don't understand why they don't commit what they told me initially.
Can anyone please tell me how I can verify and prove that I am having this 100 MBPS Uplink speed? The only thing I can tell with my eyes is that I can see those FTP upload progress bar. When it's very fast to upload one file, I assume that I have right speed.
But is there any tool or command that I can execute on the server shell, and tell them what I get as a proof?

Is 100Mbps a lot better (10 times?) than 10Mbps uplink?
What does 100Mbps mean? 100M bits per second right? So 10M bytes per second, inclusive of both download and upload?

As per topic, what is the best method to do to the hardware to improve bandwidth / uplink speed of server?
I have a production server that is used for regular file serving.
P4 3.0Ghz
4GB RAM
500GB + 160GB + 160GB hard disk
2Mbps Dedicated + 10Mbps shared.
However, the most I can pulled through the whole server is always between 1.5Mbps - 3Mbps, anyway to pull the speed up to around 10Mbps should there be availability of bandwidth for me to burst?
For any informations, the hard disk is SATA 2.

Does anyone know of a private Data Center with Satellite uplink/downlink connectivity in addition to Fiber?
I know the government depends on them for military purposes, but I was wondering if anyone is aware of a private, FCC liscenced data center with the capability to transmite/host data via satellite in case of disasters, remoteness etc. It seems complimentary for a data center but I haven't heard of it.
Is there any market research on this? What is a good source of information to find out about how many data centers there are, how much revenue they bring in, costs, etc? What is the data center bible?

I have an office internal website and I opened a port in the gateway of my office (7080) to this website (server )'s 80 port. That makes this website open to public as office has static IP. And then when I view the site from home . it's fine. But when I tried to login, the site is using a pop-up, I guess it's http authentciation, login, I was redirected to a url without my port number any more, that stops my access to the site as obviously I would.
How can I keep my connection/port number ...?

I need some real multidomain shared hosting accounts (ie DirectAdmin, Hsphere, or cPanel only with WHM access because no way I am going to use add-on domains), with support for 4 domain names, 1GB disk space, 40gb multihomed bandwith, fast mysql server with at least 6databases.
My budget is less than 30US$/mo/account, and i need both PHP5 and Mysql 5.
Now this would seem pretty regular requirements.
The fact is I would like to get some of these accounts in not-so-popular locations for an application I am developing and some tests I will do, etc.
The California/Chicago/Dallas/NewYork part was quite easy, indeed ...
Now I am looking for some decent webhosting companies co-locating in :
- Upper West USA (any amongst Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, etc)
- Colorado (ie, Denver)
- Kansas
- Vienna,McLeod corner in VA, or at the very least maybe Asburn,VA
- Toronto, Canada
If you are a web hoster and you colocate in some of these places please anwer: I don't think a simple message like "We are amongst the hosting companies located in XYZ" without reference to plans, price or promotions would be considered self-advertising in any way and is far better, useful and more informative than writing a post like "look at the advertising section, I am sure you will find some", because trust me I am searching till hours and I dind't find any:

Found some in WHT ads forum, provide 800 GB space and 8000GB bankwitch. Other companies are similar offer. I talked with them, and ask: "Do you really provide 800 GB space?" they replied, yes.
Then I told them I am going to order. I have a 600GB sized website want to move into it and planed finish moving in 3 weeks to 1 month, then they just left me there, never had one word, so frustrating.
Asked a few more, and got similar result.
Are they real companies with real ads? If not, Why WHT allow false ads listed in there and waste us time.

I own a IT/Computer related blog site & community right now. I have plans to contact the top 25-50 hosting companies posing as a potential new client. I plan ask questions similar to the following and publish it on my blog. (This project will be geared towards shared hosting only, on low to mid sized budgets.
1.) What are the exact specs of the shared servers you are using? Smp, Uni processors? What are the manufactures of this hardware?
2.) How many clients are added to a server before it's considered 'Full'? If your company doesn't use this method, then what is the average I/O, CPU, & Memory usage on a full server in the opinion of your company for shared hosting?
3.) What is your mass email policy? Emails per hour?
4.) Where is the physical location of your companies shared servers in regards to country, city, and state?
5.) Are you a Reseller? If so, with whom do you resell for?
6.) Physical location of Technical Support?
7.) What is the average wait time for a Technical Support ticket submission during server peek hours for your company?
8.) Do you currently have a link of client testimonials that includes URL's to the
clients website?
Do you think publishing this information to be public for each host would be illegal, imoral, or disrespectful in anyway? If not, does anyone have any other suggestions as far as questions that are usually not disclosed on hosts website in regards to shared hosting?

I'm currently using Bluehost to run some of my clients web sites. Nothing with huge traffic or sophistication, but good uptime is a requirement.
I used to use webfusion, but they were expensive and unreliable, and their support was bad. I migrated all of my sites to Bluehost, at considerable expense in terms of billed time.
At the moment, the server I am running on has been down for 16 hours with a projected further 12 hours to restore. I find this unacceptable.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could sign up to two shared hosting providers, but manage the DNS in such a way I can switch between the two?
Sort of a crude co-location (my clients aren't in the market for high end services). Having been burnt more than twice -I don't want to trust just one company.

I still have some NT 4s and Windows 2000 servers out there. My main issues are these are very very old clients who will not want to move, either their programmers had long disappeared or they just had an attachment to their old servers.
Now what should I do with these? Or rather what do you guys facing similar issues deal with this? Migrate these old contented clients and risk breaking something or just leave it as it is?
