Custom NameServer Issues For Resellers
Jan 27, 2008
I seem to be having some issues with custom nameservers on my Cpanel VPS.
I've setup Custom nameservers for my resellers after getting some advice from WHT however no my resellers seem to be having DNS issues all of the time when using the custome nameservers.
If a reseller uses our main Nameservers then everything seems to work fine, its just the custom ones that have issues.
The custom name servers are setup as follows.
Main Nameservers
N1.Domainname.co.uk - IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
N2.Domainname.co.uk - IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XX2
Custom Nameserver:
DNS Zone added for
NS1.RESELLERDOMAIN.COM - IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XX1
NS2.RESELLERDOMAIN.COM - IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XX2
DNS zones point to same IPs a Main Nameservers.
Issues include problems with reg companies, Cron Jobs failing when looking for the server etc...

I just ordered a dedicated server from WebNX and I got 5 IPs, I assigned 1st 2 IPS to my server ns1.mydomain.com & ns2.mydomain.com
Now I want to setup other 2 IPs shared for resellers accounts, so each reseller can have ns1.resellerdomain.com & ns2.resellerdomain.com
how can this be done?

I recently signed up for hosting with ASO on a shared hosting plan with intentions to operate an SMF forum. Prior to going live, I would like to prepare for a possible upgrade to a VPS in the near future if the forum exceeds allowed resources on the shared platform, specifically the MySQL connections which appears to be set at 40. I am currently utilizing the ASO nameservers and was wondering the following:
If I setup custom nameservers at Namecheap and request likewise from ASO, when it comes time to switching to a VPS, can I perform the following and anticipate downtime only during steps 2 & 3?
1) Configure the VPS (including DNS)
2) Switch forum to maintenance mode and transfer data to VPS
3) Change the customer nameserver IP addresses at Namecheap
Basically, I want to verify that I won't experience the 24 to 48 hrs of downtime associated with changing nameservers. Additionally, are there any known disadvantages of having custom nameservers on a shared hosting plan?

As the admin user, change the setting for a particular email account called "The maximum number of outgoing email messages" to a value beyond the default. For example if the default is 35, set it to 75. This is common -- often we have customers who send larger quantities of messages than the average user.
Login as a reseller with access to manage the email account and attempt to change any *other* value. For example, you could completely ignore the outgoing mail messages value and change just the Auto-Reply value
Plesk refuses to allow the change and kicks me back to the first tab with the following error:
The value must be in the range 0..35. Only the Plesk administrator can adjust this setting.Click to expand...

1) I use DNSMadeEasy for a couple of my important domains so I can utilize their failover service.
2) I use my own nameservers for everyone else.
At my register (GoDaddy) I've added host entries to my domain (let's call it host.com) for ALL of my nameservers: DNSMadeEasy and mine. For example here are my host entries:
1) nsdme0.host.com = 55.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
2) nsdme1.host.com = 56.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
3) nsdme2.host.com = 57.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
4) nsdme3.host.com = 58.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
5) nsdme4.host.com = 59.55.55.55 (DNSMadeEasy)
6) ns1.host.com = 60.55.55.55 (mine)
7) ns2.host.com = 61.55.55.55 (mine)
At the register I've then configured host.com to use the first five nameservers for itself, the DNSMadeEasy nameservers.
For less critical sites that I host I simply point them to ns1.host.com and ns2.host.com, my nameservers.
Now, here's the twist. If I use dig to look up www.host.com I get:
[root@lax1 ~]# dig +trace www.host.com
; <<>> DiG 9.3.3rc2 <<>> +trace www.host.com

BUT, if I lookup the nameserver (ns1.host.com) I get:
Code:
[root@lax1 ~]# dig +trace ns1.host.com
; <<>> DiG 9.3.3rc2 <<>> +trace ns1.host.com

;; Received 241 bytes from 192.54.112.30#53(H.GTLD-SERVERS.net) in 151 ms
What I've realized is that the actual IP addresses for nameserver host entries come from a higher level server than my own, in this case H.GTLD-SERVERS.net. I guess this makes sense but I just hadn't realized it before. It looks like I don't even need to have record entries in my DNS records for the host nameservers.
Now for the question. Can I:
1) Remove my custom host nameserver entries from my register.
2) Add entries in my DNSMadeEasy records to specify the location of ns1.host.com and ns2.host.com.
3) Use the failover provided by DNSMadeEasy to also fail-over my DNS entries for my nameservers?
I know this would require one more hop if it works but it would allow me to provide failover ability to fifty domains without having to purchase the extra domains at DNSMadeEasy.

When a dedicated server reseller is looking for a new partner, what exactly are they looking for? Is price far and away the primary factor? Are there other features/offerings that a reseller is looking for? Are there things that would prevent you from reselling for someone if they didn't offer them?
Who are currently the best server providers to resell for and why?

any VPS resellers that are using VMWare ESXi as their platform for their hosting plans?
Also, if anyone is familiar with VMWare, I am curious as to what you think of these hardware specifications and how many Linux based CentOS VMs I can comfortably run on this hardware:
Processor:AMD Opteron Quad-Core 1352 Barcelona 2.1GHz
Motherboard:Tyan S2925G2NR AM2 nVidia nForce 3400 ATX n3400B
Memory/RAM:Kingston 1GB 240Pin DDR2800 ECC Unbuffered
RAID Card:Adaptec AAR-2610SA 6Port SATA 64MB RAM
Hard Drive 1:Seagate Barracuda ES.2 500GB 7200RPM SATA
Hard Drive 2:Seagate Barracuda ES.2 500GB 7200RPM SATA
Hard Drive 3:Seagate Barracuda ES.2 500GB 7200RPM SATA
Hard Drive 4:Seagate Barracuda ES.2 500GB 7200RPM SATA
There would be two RAID1's in a RAID10 configuration for the storage.

I have a dedicated business III linux root server (CentOS + Plesk) with 1and1.co.uk and have two domains purchased through them. What I want to do is set up resellers and then the resellers can point their own external domains to their reseller packages. To test the process, this is what I have done...
In the 123-reg.co.uk control panel (where I have my own list of domains), I change the nameservers from ns/ns2.123-reg.co.uk of example.com to ns59/ns60.1and1.co.uk and then proceed to set up web forwarding to my servers IP. Now, after setting up a reseller account through Plesk, I log in and click add the domain example.com. After waiting 24+ hours, when I type in example.com, I get the 'address not found' message through my browser. Clearly something is not set up right.
The only way I can host external domains is to use the domain control panel in the 1and1 screens to transfer an external domain to my root package - not an efficient way of setting up a reseller account.
Does anybody have any guideance on where I am going wrong? Do I need to set up my own nameserver for reseller clients to point their domains to?

with most dns being able to be handled by the domain owner through register/godaddy, etc. are resellers/hosters still finding they need to run their own name servers? or do you tell customer the IP to change their A record to? doesn't seem like running your own dns server is such a requirement like years ago was.

Are there other shared rack colo providers in the Phoenix or Tucson area? Probably will start with 3-5amp draw and 2-3mbit. Are there other DC's I should be looking at? I don't thing I'd be a spec on the radar at Limelight.

how can I share IP with a reseller account so he can have his own private nameservers?
I WHM tweak settings, I have allowed sharing of IP for nameserver purposes.
Now whenever I try editing Privileges/Nameservers in reseller centre and adding a namserver, it tells me I am out or IP addresses?
Why is it doing it when I have checked the box for sharing of IP addresses?
Also can I simply do it by editing zone file of that reseller account and entering values manually?

It's been a long time since I have last transfered an account between 2 servers.
I have reciently purchased a VPS using Xen as an upgrade from my resellers account. Only problem that I am having is actually transfering the accounts between the 2 servers.
I do not have root access to the resellers account and the server that it is on has tight security. I have tried using the transfer between 2 servers method on WHM however this has failed.
I have also tried the method of backing up, transfering to the other server which works fine. However I am unable to restore the full backup.
I have also tried the Restore a Full Backup/cpmove file [url] is WHM of my VPS however it is unable to find the backup files.
(SSH is also my week point when it comes to server knowledge)

I'm considering moving my servers into Fremont II data center with HE. I have a small operation with about 7 servers, all fairly low powered. But I like the idea that it is staffed 24x7 because sometimes I screw up and lock myself out of my box and have to drive down there to fix my stupid mistakes.
I'm basically looking for 1/2 cab with 1/2 cab power (7.5 - 10 amps) - like to have up to 50mb bandwidth (currently running about 30 now). Need block of 64 IP addresses. So it's a little small to buy from HE directly.
I do web hosting email hosting and spam filtering. Nothing too controversial except occasionally the Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org) will ask me to host a site that other hosts were scared off by bogus legal threats. (powerpage.org is an example) So need someone who isn't scared off over a truly bogus threat.
So - I'm looking for information about HE resellers. I've seen ads for servertweak and EGIhosting and a few others and wondering about if they are any good or are there others that I should be considering. Or anything I should know about HE?
I'm especially interested if I can make a deal with someone to trade out spam filtering services for colo space. I have the best spam filtering on the planet.

I have a question for those who manage servers with resellers accounts:
- how do you handle the high server load?
why this question?
- All reseller account that I have used until now had the high load problem
- many of the topics that I see here at wht, about resellers accounts complains of high load
- we have some servers with arround 100's shared accounts in each, without any load problems (without any reseller account)...
...but now, we build a new server to sell reseller accounts and after first reseller was created - high load usage!
what is the reason for that? is possible to have resellers that has a fair server usage?

Just an open-ended question that's been bugging me lately. As the industry moves to a more automated approach, I was wondering if cPanel users would likely move to another CP if it was fully automated (including the migration).
Either a custom solution or H-Sphere, if it meant you had one login for all of your services/no need to contact support for anything except actual problems.

There doesn't seem to be a list of folks that resell Level3 anywhere, and doing a GIS doesn't really help, either.
I'm looking for a couple of names of some companies that offer dedicated servers in Level3 facilities? Preferably in the Northeast, but anywhere on the East Coast is probably fine, too.
I know Limestone and TMS are L3 resellers, but they aren't east coast...

Does someone know any other company besides fxhbackup and bqinternet that sells backup services based on R1Soft CDP?
My current solution is constantly giving broken pipe lines error. I was told this is because of overloaded backup servers. I did had my own CDP server running on the same DC and it worked like a charm, but currently my provider says it will not support it anymore and its terrible slow on his CDP server, besides it breaks backup.
Can someone point me one a CDP solution that works?
Has someone had experience with Acronis True Echo Server Enterprise?
