Are Chained Root Ssl Certificates More Secure Than Single Root?

Nov 25, 2008

I have read that although chained root ssl certificates can be more difficult to install they are actually more secure since the root certificate cannot be compromised, only the intermediary.

Is this true? It looks like both google and amazon both use chained SGC certs.

Minimum Packages

Jan 27, 2007

Has anyone put together a list of minimum packages required for a LAMP box on RHEL4?

After doing a so-called "minimal" server install, there are several packages I uninstall during the hardening process (anacron at autofs cups* gpm irda-utils isdn4k-utils nfs* pcmcia-cs portmap redhat-lsb xinetd yp-tools ypbind). While deploying a new box recently, I got to thinking about how many other packages included in the so-called "minimal" install aren't really necessary on a typical LAMP server. Obviously the answer is "it depends", but... what else are folks uninstalling?

What Do Server Resellers Look For

Apr 23, 2008

When a dedicated server reseller is looking for a new partner, what exactly are they looking for? Is price far and away the primary factor? Are there other features/offerings that a reseller is looking for? Are there things that would prevent you from reselling for someone if they didn't offer them?

Who are currently the best server providers to resell for and why?

VPS Resellers Using VMWare

Dec 31, 2008

any VPS resellers that are using VMWare ESXi as their platform for their hosting plans?

Also, if anyone is familiar with VMWare, I am curious as to what you think of these hardware specifications and how many Linux based CentOS VMs I can comfortably run on this hardware:

Processor:AMD Opteron Quad-Core 1352 Barcelona 2.1GHz
Motherboard:Tyan S2925G2NR AM2 nVidia nForce 3400 ATX n3400B
Memory/RAM:Kingston 1GB 240Pin DDR2800 ECC Unbuffered
RAID Card:Adaptec AAR-2610SA 6Port SATA 64MB RAM
Hard Drive 1:Seagate Barracuda ES.2 500GB 7200RPM SATA
Hard Drive 2:Seagate Barracuda ES.2 500GB 7200RPM SATA
Hard Drive 3:Seagate Barracuda ES.2 500GB 7200RPM SATA
Hard Drive 4:Seagate Barracuda ES.2 500GB 7200RPM SATA

There would be two RAID1's in a RAID10 configuration for the storage.

IP Addresses, Packages On CPanel WHM

Apr 13, 2008

I've been on shared hosting for ages but I needed to add an IP and site5 only allows one per account (even on the 'multi-site' plans). Before that I was with Pair Networks.

So, I got the VPS server all setup and I went through and did the initial configuration of the WHM. I have two IPs with my account. My question is about setting up packages and dedicated IPs. When I first set up a package with a dedicated IP, it only lets me choose the second IP on my account. So, I created a package without a dedicated IP for the first site. But now it's on a shared package. So, I take it I can't setup two dedicated IP packages unless I have 3 IPs? Does the cPanel access for the package with the dedicated IP allow for SSL functions? The cpanel access for my first account doesn't have any SSL options - so I guess I need to manage that with the WHM?

Anyway, if someone would be so kind as to shed a little light on the topic of IPs and packages with dedicated IPs and SSL management for accounts under both types of packages,

Cleaning Up Packages - CentOS

Mar 10, 2007

When I run yum update as normal it always says something like

Added xx packages, deleted 0 old in x seconds.

I was wondering where ARE these old packages stored? It seems like every time I run yum update it uses a tiny bit of my disk space whenever it downloads all the packages, seems natural though. But for all I know I probably have update package downloads from when the OS was first installed...

My question is, if they are anywhere, how do I just clean out ALL old packages from yum update that I don't need anymore? Are there old packages sitting in there because it says "deleted 0 old" all the time? Just curious because it all adds up when I think about it.

And oh one more question, when I update the kernel - I noticed it keeps packing kernel files in /boot/. How can I tell which of these I don't need anymore? It seems to be getting quite full.

Reinstalling Packages On Debian

Feb 27, 2007

Linux user trying to install a few packages on a new dedicated Debian server.

Following some tutorials, I installed Apache1.3 & PHP4 using apt-get install and had them up and running no problem.

I then decided to change the versions, so removed them using apt-get remove and deleted the relevant folders from /etc (this was before I knew of the apt-get --purge option).

I then tried to install Apache2 and PHP5, and although it appears to have worked, folders are not created for them in /etc so it doesn't work.

Is there a way of doing a fresh clean install so that the folders are created? I've tried apt-get clean without success.

Alternatively, a way to rollback Debian to it's previous state before I got my grubby little hands on it!

Creating Resellers Using 1and1

May 9, 2009

I have a dedicated business III linux root server (CentOS + Plesk) with 1and1.co.uk and have two domains purchased through them. What I want to do is set up resellers and then the resellers can point their own external domains to their reseller packages. To test the process, this is what I have done...

In the 123-reg.co.uk control panel (where I have my own list of domains), I change the nameservers from ns/ns2.123-reg.co.uk of example.com to ns59/ns60.1and1.co.uk and then proceed to set up web forwarding to my servers IP. Now, after setting up a reseller account through Plesk, I log in and click add the domain example.com. After waiting 24+ hours, when I type in example.com, I get the 'address not found' message through my browser. Clearly something is not set up right.

The only way I can host external domains is to use the domain control panel in the 1and1 screens to transfer an external domain to my root package - not an efficient way of setting up a reseller account.

Does anybody have any guideance on where I am going wrong? Do I need to set up my own nameserver for reseller clients to point their domains to?

Why is it doing it when I have checked the box for sharing of IP addresses?

Also can I simply do it by editing zone file of that reseller account and entering values manually?

Transfering Accounts (Resellers -> VPS)

Dec 29, 2008

It's been a long time since I have last transfered an account between 2 servers.

I have reciently purchased a VPS using Xen as an upgrade from my resellers account. Only problem that I am having is actually transfering the accounts between the 2 servers.

I do not have root access to the resellers account and the server that it is on has tight security. I have tried using the transfer between 2 servers method on WHM however this has failed.

I have also tried the method of backing up, transfering to the other server which works fine. However I am unable to restore the full backup.

I have also tried the Restore a Full Backup/cpmove file [url] is WHM of my VPS however it is unable to find the backup files.

(SSH is also my week point when it comes to server knowledge)

Colo In HE Fremont II Resellers

Aug 31, 2007

I'm considering moving my servers into Fremont II data center with HE. I have a small operation with about 7 servers, all fairly low powered. But I like the idea that it is staffed 24x7 because sometimes I screw up and lock myself out of my box and have to drive down there to fix my stupid mistakes.

I'm basically looking for 1/2 cab with 1/2 cab power (7.5 - 10 amps) - like to have up to 50mb bandwidth (currently running about 30 now). Need block of 64 IP addresses. So it's a little small to buy from HE directly.

I do web hosting email hosting and spam filtering. Nothing too controversial except occasionally the Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org) will ask me to host a site that other hosts were scared off by bogus legal threats. (powerpage.org is an example) So need someone who isn't scared off over a truly bogus threat.

So - I'm looking for information about HE resellers. I've seen ads for servertweak and EGIhosting and a few others and wondering about if they are any good or are there others that I should be considering. Or anything I should know about HE?

I'm especially interested if I can make a deal with someone to trade out spam filtering services for colo space. I have the best spam filtering on the planet.
