View 3 RepliesI need colo in FL, preferably in the Tampa area
The server I want to colo is a Poweredge T300.
The specs I need are:
10-15 IP's
2 TB bandwidth
Anyone have a ball park figure of what to expect $/MB? on a 100 or 200 megabit Commit From XO in the Tampa/FL market. Also other than Cogent Who else has aggressive pricing at the same commit level as above in the Tampa Market?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI currently have 2 VPSs that I'm monitoring and I noticed that on one of them the memory usage is much higher than the other which doesn't make sense to me. I tracked the high memory usage to the Apache processes.
Here's the overview of the VPSs:
LiquidWeb VPS- 512MB RAM, 10 Sites with minimal usage.
Average httpd process (Owner Priority Cpu% Mem% Command):
nobody 0 0.0 1.2 /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -k start -DSSL
Virpus VPS- 384MB RAM, 61 sites with moderate usage.
Average httpd process (Owner Priority Cpu% Mem% Command):
nobody 0 0.0 0.3 /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -k start -DSSL
Both Apache configurations are identical, the only difference besides the hardware is that LiquidWeb runs CentOS4.7 and Virpus runs CentOS5.2, any ideas? It's not to big of a deal since I'm not near my limit for either of them but I was just curious.
what's going inside my provider Powervps/Defender hosting, they are offering now 25% OFF of new customers + triply bandwidth.
Curent customers are not allowod to get this offer, until they order a new VPS and cancel the older.
I'm asking, because i feel, it's samething, why they don't go upgarading the account throughly with keeping IPs and data..? why do old customers need to cancel the old VPS then they go get a new VPS..?
are Old VPSs powerfully then the newest..? any informations...?
I'm searching for how to create a VPSs From dedicated servers and sell it ..
the dedicated server will be :
4 processors 3.0
8 GB ram
1024 GB H.D.D. Sata II
1 GB Uplink
In order to increase the reliability of a audio streaming service I am thinking to take the action I describe below.
1. Buy two Windows VPSs with WMS installed.
2. Register a domain name (i.e audiostream.com) with 4 nameservers: ns1.ip1_vps1, ns2.ip2_vps1, ns3.ip1_vps2, ns4.ip2_vps2.
3. Create all publishing points (streams) on both servers.
Normaly VPS1 should serve all clients. In case VPS1 goes down, VPS2 should jump in and serve all clients-connections. As soon as VPS1 becomes available (ns1 & ns2 start responding again), VPS1 starts serving all new connections.
Load balancing or any other kind of advanced load, traffic, etc management is not important.
Then we have the following cases:
1. VPS1 is down , which means that VPS2 should take charge.
2. VPS1 is up (ns, http, ftp services), but WMS1 is down (crashed). Means that the playlist (asx) file should be built so that it also includes the IP, port & publishing points of VPS2. This should be done because ns1 & ns2 will answer without any problem, but WMS1 will be crashed and won't serve any media connections, thus ASX will look for the next available stream in the playlist.
Do you think that the above is possible. Is this gonna work?
if i can create 2 VPS with completely different OS such as CentOS5 and Windows 2003 Std.
The main server will be running CentOS with HyperVM.
Last month I order 2 Xen VPSs from Xenvz.co.uk and use them for VPN proxy.
But a few days ago, xenvz stopped one vps and state "This is because it is spreading the Conficker virus.". I'm a little surprise because there's only 10+ users on this vps. Most of them use VPN for visting Youtube or P2P download or gaming. And Conficker virus can only run on Windows, but all my vps is running on Debian.
Maybe someone had download something that contain Conficker virus?
Anyway, I had to move a few users to another vps yesterday.
But xenvz stop my another vps today for the same reason!
I really do not know whether or not one of my user is spreading or other reason, but as I know, Conficker virus had affected thousands of hosts in the past. If someone download or being affect by conficker for any reason, provider then stop their host, I'm afraid thousands of sites would down.
Any recommendations for co-location services in the Bay Area?
Anyone has experience with Peer1 colocation? We're just looking to co-locate a few servers.
What webhosting/domain/server company has the best customer area - ie. the best control panel, billing interface, integration with 3rd party scripts and control panels etc etc.
I think Mediatemple has done a good job, mosso's is excellent and I like what softlayer has done with their server management interface...
Anyone else?
where to find the best prices on 5u rack space, 5Mbps bandwidth, and 5amps power in Fremont or San Jose?
Another question, I'm using a small desktop switch which can fit behind one of my 14 inch deep 1u server. Would colos allow this of would I need to pay for another U for the switch?
Does anyone know any good colocations that are good for gaming? I've been searching for some but couldn't find any. I'm interested in places like San Jose, San Francisco, or Fremont.

my company is looking for a colo provider in the Bay Area. We have done some research and the final choice comes down to these 2 companies: internap and ethr.net.
Price wise, Internap is slightly more expensive on the bandwidth, setup cost and cabinet rental.
Could anyone provide some recommendation based on personal experience? Our service is live video streaming, therefore we are looking for good network with low latency and with a bandwidth of 100mbps.
Can anyone recommend a colo for 1u in Seattle area? Looking to spend < $100/month for 3mbits of bandwidth.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAny suggestions / positive experiences? The 1st preference would be Maryland side (all way up to Frederick) but the whole area is definitely of interest.
1-2 1U boxes or maybe a 4U with initially minimal bandwith reqs and high regard to cost effectiveness
Most VPS offerings have "burstable" memory allocations. I get how you can do this with most things -- letting a VPS access more CPU cycles can be done pretty easily, and a 10 Mbps line burstable to 100 Mbps makes sense.
But how does the guest OS handle all of a sudden having more memory? Since a lot of VPS guests run without modification, how does this work? Does the typical Linux system support dynamic changes in RAM? I can only imagine that dealing with "un-bursting" is even more complex: suppose I have 128MB, burst to 512, but then the host node tries to reclaim some of it. Is the system smart enough to seamlessly swap out to disk when RAM "disappears?" I'd fully expect a kernel panic when the system's RAM shrinks in size, particularly when the RAM was in use.
I'm curious about exactly how all of this is managed. Given that 95% of VPS hosts give a burstable range of RAM, what exactly manages this? Is the virtualization platform handling this and somehow "tricking" the kernel, or is the guest system able to deal with changing RAM allocations? And, if the latter, is this a standard feature of the Linux kernel, or are guest OS mods still necessary to deal with burstable RAM?
I want to create a "Client" only area that a user will have to supply a User-id and Password to gain access to and to ALL of the web pages within it. If a user does not have a User-id and Password, I want them to be able to Register for one, and if they are a "Client", then I will Activate their access.
My question is: Can someone recommend either a Free or low cost script that will allow me to do this. I would want the script to have an "Admin" function to Activate a user request, Cancel a Users access. I would also want a "User" function that would allow the user to change some of the registration data (Password, Email). I would prefer that the script is PHP.
Im trying to install an ssl purchased from godaddy for my client area using whm on my dedicated box

but keep getting an error:
"Sorry, you must have a dedicated ip to use this feature for the user: mydomain! If you are intending to install a shared certificate you must use the username "nobody" for security and bandwidth reporting reasons"
well its a dedicated box and i do have a dedicated ip of course
We are currently hosting a cabinet of servers in our office, looking at adding about another 3/4 of a cabinet worth of servers in a next couple of months. The office is in the Boston area, and we currently are using Verizon for both the loop and bandwidth.
While this is working fairly well, we are starting to look at colo options. We would like to stay in the Boston area, but do not have much experience with the local options.
We have two main questions:
1) What data centers are considered good in Boston?
2) Is it worthwhile to consider resellers once you exceed a full cabinet?
I'm specifically looking for a server in the European area since I am from South Africa.
The reason being they will be more or less in the same timezone as I am and they also generally provide the fastest ping times (220ms to a server in Europe as opposed to 350ms to a server in USA).
I will be using the server as our own hosting space and hopefully be able to rent a monthly license for Parallels Plesk so that I may be able to resell hosting space - this is the primary reason for the dedicated server. I would like to know whether getting at least a quad core for this setup is essential or if I can get away with a dual core (in the case of hosting say 50 - 100 different websites).
So far I have been looking at keyweb.de which has a dual-core setup at 79euro installation fee and 49euro monthly fee. Their quad-core setup is 99euro installation and 59euro monthly. One drawback is it seems that they don't install Ubuntu linux (which is the OS i'm after). Another one is that their website isn't very intuitive - I cannot see whether it is possible to bundle Plesk with my order. I do however like the fact that they generally allow torrents.
A client wants to FTP some files to my server but I don't want him to see/have access to all the other stuff on the server. Is there a way that I can 'corden-off' an area for him to FTP stuff to? A password protected area perhaps?
