I have a questions for you other Canadians out there co-locating machines in the United States. How do you deal with shipping back servers to you that need repaired? I had to ship a server back to me via UPS recently and to my surprise it arrives to me with a $150 COD charge on it. I ended up talking to UPS and it ended up being $50 for brokerage fee's. But I'm wondering if there is any secret some of you are using to get the machines back without crazy border fee's? This is the first instance I've had to ship something back as the provider would not diagnose the machine on site or even help with shipping I had to go through UPS and then had to rely on the provider marking the right reason for shipping which they did not do.
does anyone know of any datacenters in the uk? looking to get a server with lots of hd space but dont wanna pay some of the extortionate prices around as the rest of the server doesnt need to be powerful or anything. im in uk so would be nice not to have to ship a server overseas
we are just in the process of going from dedicated to colocated and I'm wondering where to keep DNS records (used to have at our hosting provider). Where do you usually do this? We have some 300+ domain names and it's critical that DNS is up. I saw on some sites that the price can be around 20USD per domain per year but to me this sounds a bit steep.
I have been with LT for about 4 months i think and have paid already over 700 Bucks or something, and since i plan to be around for quite some time, i dont know if i should continue to rent out server or get my own big beast and get it collocated.
So all the folks out there who are doing collocation can you tell me good providers for server parts and servers and good dc's with suitable prices. Also would sticking to renting out server would be better or collocation would be suitable?
I was a webhost from a while ago leasing dedicated servers and eventually went to work for the datacenter where I had my colo. For a while now I've working with a neat group of 5-6 other folks programming a new uptime monitor/geo-dispersed server load testing system/software. We were looking for possible partners to keep hosting costs down during the alpha stage of the project but while we were drawing up the papers, we saw just too much opportunity for a conflict of interest to arise and realized we couldn't realistically associate ourselves with any single company to that degree. So after a little work and fundraising, we're finally in a position to either lease some servers or colo.
Since I've been out of the loop for a while, I just want to know who the major/reliable players are when it comes to leasing or colo machines in multiple areas (ideally East, Middle, West, Canada and Europe/Asia? We would prefer to be with one company for ease of billing and have our network of monitoring stations spread out geographically. But we don't want all of our eggs in one basket so if a provider goes belly-up or decides to hike our rates 30-40% with little notice, we won't have too much to worry about.
We're watching what we spend during the alpha stage very closely, but I've been insisting we can strike the right balance between cost and reliability (connectivity).
I've been using FreeBSD for a while now, but I still feel like a novice when looking at top because I don't understand or know what all of the STATES mean. I know that many of them represent different kernal states and certain programs have their own unique STATES, but what do the usuals mean? man top only has 2-3 listed with very vague descriptions.
Does anyone here understand many of them? If so it would be greatly appreciated if you could write up a few of the basic ones.
select nanslp kserel RUN pause lockf kqread sbwait pipered
Those are the ones I currently see in top. I know there are probably thosands of others, but those are the ones I usally look at.
I have decided to go with a canadian dedicated for seo purpose's does anyone know where I can find a good server with comparable prices to the US, I have looks and everything seems to be about $100 more then what theplanet offers.
Can anyone recommend a reliable hosting company located in Canada, preferably in Ontario? I am looking to resell hosting to a variety of clients. Excellent customer support is an absolute must. Also need an easy-to-use interface with maybe cPanel, access to eCommerce software, the whole nine yards. I know that NetworkSolutions (U.S.-based) operates in Canada. Anyone deal with them? I do deal with hosting companies in other parts of the world but have some clients who wish to remain domestic.
I have been happy at site5. Due to the Patriot Act, the stricter Canadian PIPEDA law, and my Canadian residency, I am looking for a comparable Canadian host.
I have a number of domains. My research has not revealed any Canadian hosts that offer something comparable to the convenience of Site5's MultiSite. Looks like to operate multiple domains under a single account in Canada the administration is via subdomains or domain pointers rather than what MultiSite does. Is anyone aware of a Canadian host that offers MultiSite like functionality.
The company and all of its hardware must be in Canada so the data does not become subject to the laws of other jurisdictions.
Can any one recommend any Canadian dedicated server providers except iWeb? We have already spoken to them and they do not support our preferred server operating system and control panel.
Anyone aware of a hosting company with all of their hardware in Canada who offers in their basic accounts the ability to host multiple domains without using sub-domains or sub-folders.
I want to host several domains with individual administration and security so that a bad script or hack of one wont affect the other domains.
We currently have a managed server at a datacenter in Ontario, and the provider had always charged us in USD. This is fine with us, as most of our revenue is in USD and then we're not subject to currency risk.
Now that the Canadian dollar has reached parity and then exceeded the USD, I'm wondering more about this policy. Is it typical that datacenters in Canada price in USD, or is our provider the exception? They list prices on their site only in USD, despite being a Canadian company and only having facilities in Canada.
I am looking for a Canadian host who necessarily have their servers in Canada who offer dedicated hosting and who hosts adult sites. I don't have anything particular specifications as of now since my sites are overall small (1k/day).
I would like to know how many dedicated server companies are based in Canada who do colo or have there own Data Center. I do know iweb is one. There are few more like peer1 and who else is there. I know there is search option but its giving too many results and i have very limited internet connectivity atm
We are looking to add canadian data center in our portfolio as well. And I am in Canada these days on business trip.
Anybody used webnx in LA USA to host any mission critical i/o cpu intensive web based applications for UK or European customers? If yes did the distance have any great or neagitive impact on speed of service?
If noboday has the experience does anyone have any experience?
I am considering a server from Iweb wich is based in Canada.
My question is about search engines especially google. My site will be targeting US visitors and I am in the US. When google and other search engines see that my IP address is in Canada will it have any affect on search engine ranking for the regular us google.com? I don't care much about rankings on google.ca since my visitors will mainly be in the USA. anybody have any insite on this? I also want to mention my domain name will be a .com domain
Currently we've got around 15 dedicated servers in the USA, 1 in the Netherlands and 1 in Germany. We're currently expanding a bit and we've just put up another server in Malaysia and now wanting to hit the UK.
I'm after a dedicated server with specifications not to dissimilar to the following:
- Core2 CPU (E6600 or better) - 2GB RAM (or better) - 250GB HDD (or better) - 100MBit NIC - 2000GB b/w (or better) - Windows 2003 (Standard Edition preferred)
We're looking to pay no more than 100/mo. Server will be used for gaming purposes.
I'm after a respected company that will accept PayPal. I'll ask that you do not suggest companies which do not accept PayPal or ask for ID verification because it's extra hassle I don't want to deal with.
I've had a look at RapidSwitch which seem good but I can't find ANYTHING about payment methods on their website which is a bit daft (unless I'm blind).
