Www Record Change

i've had the same issue come up a couple of times recently and i'm looking for a bit of advice before i go any further. i'm doing web development on a couple of websites where the companies want to preserve the mail exchange set up with their existing hosts, but wish to move their website to a different hosting platform. i have just set up a VPS which i want to host the websites on, however, i am unsure if i can simply request that the existing providers change the www record to point to my VPS IP address. is this sufficient or do i have to ask the hosts for a nameservers change?

Creating An SSL Certificate - Www Vs No Www
When you create a SSL certificate for www.mydomain.com vs mydomain.com, is the "www" vs "non-www" decided when you generate the CSR (for example, in cpanel/whm)? Or is it "decided" when you actually purchase the certificate?

Site Www Does Not Work But Without Www Does
Like the title says, I just moved my site over to my own server, and it is running cpanel. Anyways the main site [url]works, but [url]does not.

What is really strange is, [url]works fine as does [url]

So I figure there is something I have to do to get it all to work right.

The other issue is that if you are logged into [url]but goto [url], you are not logged in anymore, but if you go back to the original link, then you are still logged in. This happened on the other guys server before with the main site as well.

Getting Www.domain.com To Work, Domain.com Resolves Correctly, Just Not With Www
Okay guys, a quick question for all the gurus out there. I'll admit I'm a bit embarassed posting such an easy question, but give a guy a break, I've been using managed servers for god knows how long and I've finally decided to take a dive into administration. Everything is firewalled and secured properly, I'm just having trouble getting the ServerAlias to work right.

What happens is I go into my browser and enter in [url]walaa! It works.

Now, when I enter in [url], it does not resolve.

I have checked with "dig" the domain settings and it looks as though all of the nameservers are set up fine, this is an apache problem. I'm running apache 2.2 on Ubuntu 7.10 for all those who are interested.

Here is my etc/apache2/sites-available/domain.com:

<VirtualHost *:80>

# Admin email, Server Name (domain name) and any aliases
ServerAdmin webmaster@domain1.com
ServerName domain.com
ServerAlias www.domain.com

# Index file and Document Root (where the public files are located)
DirectoryIndex index.html
DocumentRoot /home/demo/public_html/domain.com/public

# Custom log file locations
LogLevel warn
ErrorLog /home/demo/public_html/domain.com/logs/error.log
CustomLog /home/demo/public_html/domain.com/logs/access.log combined

</VirtualHost>

I've been messing with it for about 45 minutes and I'm worn out at ~4:30am and could use a helping hand from the pros.

Change Host, Change Domain And Getting Search Engines Up To Speed
Has anyone helped clients transition from one domain to another? Maybe dissolving a partnership or renaming their company... so a new domain name has been registered and a new website created.

2 Issues:

#1 Using .htaccess 301 redirect
We used the following command line in their old website's htaccess file

Redirect 301 / [url]

The goal was to get people try to visit any page of their old website (i.e. OldWebsite.com/contact.html) redirected to their new website (i.e. NewWebsite.com/contact.html). Isn't that supposed to change the address bar's URL, too? For some reason, I visit their old site and I seem to be redirected to their new website but the address bar still has their old domain name? Something is going on???

#2 Having their new company name for 2 years now. People can enter her new company name in Google, MSN or Yahoo. Her new company name appears in the search results but has the old domain name associated with it. We are trying to get rid of any reference to that old domain name? What's the easiest way to do this? So what people see in search engines is:

New Company
Short Meta Description
www.OldDomain.com

What steps did I miss in this transition?

What steps do I have to take on their old website/old web server to control it's appearance on search engines and make sure people get to the new website?

A Record
i have a simple reseller account to give my clients some hosting space. one specific client keeps the domain registered with his current domain registrar. to point the domain name at his new hosting account (provided by me) he's saying that he just needs the "a-record", not the nameservers that i gave him originally. i can not seem to find an a-record for my hosting accounts anywhere ...

my hosting support is saying the client will just need the IP address. but afaik ip address is not == a-record

can anyone clarify what an a-record is exactly and whether or not it can be interchanged with an ip address?

this is for a .co.uk domain name and my reseller account is with hostgator

DN Transfer And A Record
I cannot use DN's so Ive had to use dot in place of periods below)

I have a domain name registered with Netfirms - lets call it mydomain dot com. I didnt want to use their hosting services, just reg'd the DN with them. I host the mydomain dot com website on my home PC. In order to get both mydomain dot com and www dot mydomain dot com to resolve to my Home IP address I had to create an A record for each on the Netfirms Domain manager GUI.

I have since purchased Hosting services from Webhostingpad dot com and now wish to move/point my mydomain dot com and www dot mydomain dot com to my webhostingpad dot com hosted account.

When I spoke with Webhostingpad about pointing mydomain dot com to them they said all I had to do was use their Name Servers on the Netfirms side and I should be set. When I asked 'what about the A records? Do I need to create A records on their side for mydomain dot com and www dot mydomain dot com' they said 'Nope' - once its pointed to their NS I should be all set

My questions are:

- Why did I need to create A records on the Netfirms side to point to my Home IP?

- Will what Webhostingpad is saying work (once I point my DN to their NS, and remove the existing A records on the Netfirms side, I should be good to go)

- Will both mydomain dot com and www dot mydomain dot com resolve properly to my webhostingpad server?

I just want to make sure this works before I do it and potentially down my website.

SPF Record
Common scenario; email sent from our server to Yahoo does not arrive. It is so bad that we have a 23% order completion rate for Yahoo users. To compare, Gmail is 83%.

We send emails to confirm registration, and also to remind users to complete their invoices.

Our setup is like so:

User registers at registration.domain.com, a different server to domain.com.

Upon registering an email is sent to the user using the registration.domain.com web server but with a from address of info@domain.com

Our info@domain.com email address is hooked up to Google Apps as this is who we use to manage our inbox.

how to construct our SPF records? I am slightly confused as we have a mail server, a different reply to domain and MX records with Google..

A Record To Alias
I have built a new website (ASP) for a friend. Their current domain "hissite.co.uk" is on another server - they want their email to stay with that hosting company.

I have created their new site on another server using a similar domain name "hissite2.co.uk". The server is a shared hosting account so the IP isn't dedicated.

Question

Making a change to the A Record asks for an IP address but doesn't work when pointing to a shared hosting server which holds lots of domains. I don't want to change the CName or set up a 301 Redirect.

I was told that if I add an alias of the main domain (hissite.co.uk) on the new server the change to the A record on the current server, although the IP address is pointing to a shared hosting server will work.

SPF Record
I would like to setup SPF record for my domain. I am using Google Apps for the domain.

But I will also be sending mail from my vps server. Hence what should I use?

Quote:

v=spf1 a include:aspmx.googlemail.com ~all

or

Quote:

v=spf1 a mx ~all

If both works, which one is better? I will be sending emails from subdomains of my main site too, so do I need to anything special for that?

I am using ~all instead of -all, because I sometimes send emails from my development server(which is having dynamic ip). Hence I don't want those emails to rejected, even if they are marked as spam.[url]

Nameservers And A Record For Hostname?
Hello I am totally new to Dedicated hosting

I got my server for $350 as I am going to host some high resource sites

Everything went well. I learned to use SSH plus I have Cpanel/WHM

One thing I am confused about is?

what exactly is this damn thing called "Hostname"? why do we need it and whats its significance?

in WHM I entered my hostname as "web1.mydomain.com" (where mydomain.com is one of my domains that I specially registered and is not being used anywhere else)

now in the A records for mydomain.com, am I supposed to give the IP of the server?

also what about the Nameservers for mydomain.com that I am supposed to enter in my domain admin panel, should I leave them blank?

3. Domain.com is use on other Dedicated server

Are these kind of setup okay? or should I really changed the hostname.domain.com to something else that is hosted on the same server?

Wildcard Dns Record

If I'm setting a sub domain of serverB such as site1.serverB.maindomain.com I have to setup an A record on serverA for the subdomain and I don't want to have to do this every time.

Is there anyway I can setup a wildcard A record for subdomains such as:

DNS A-Record Hosting
I have lot of proxies hosted on my dedicated server. Currently i use servage.net nameservers and change the A-Record ip of the domain to the dedicated server ips.My dedicated server provides only very limited DNS services so i cant use them.

Since i have sold all my other sites in servage,i dont want to continue that hosting account. All the domains are registered in Domain.com which do not provide any DNS services.

So is there any free or very cheap place where i can use the nameservers and edit A-record to my dedicated server?it should not have any down time etc and should be reliable. Thats the only requirement i need so i dont want to waste a full hosting account for just that redirecting functionality.

Registering Nameserver And A Record
I always thought that i can just go and point nsa.mydomain.com and nsb.mydomain.com A hosts to my personal dns server from my mydomain.com's dns service and use them anydomain.com's name servers.

But today i've been trying to setup another domain (mynewdomain.com) with a different registar and decided to use ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com as name servers and setup A host names. when i try to add name servers ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com to mynewdomain.com i get error saying name servers not registered. i could only do it by going mydomain.com's current registrar and add name sevrer records ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com.

now, i dont want to know why this is but my question is if i register ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com at my registrar , would they resolve like a current A host record? do i need to add a records at my dns service for those name servers too? if they do resolve without adding A records, instead of usiong dns service why i dont just add more nameserver records on my registar and use them like a records?

So i created the MX records for the .com domain .. Now my question is do i have to also contact my registar for the domain and ask them to update their records so that now it points to the new MX?

I am really new at this stuff so please bare with me.. when i do an nslookup in DOS it still shows the .org as my mail server.

mydomain-name.com MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = mail.mydomain-name.org

Is this something that needs to be changed at the registrar level?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SPF lookup of sender droid@domain.net from IP 12.34.56.789:</B>

SPF string used: v=spf1amxip4:12.34.56.789mx:domain.net~all.

Processing SPF string: v=spf1amxip4:12.34.56.789mx:domain.net~all.
Error: No space in SPF string. Returning UNKNOWN.

Result: PERMERROR
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see, there are no spaces! I've entered it in to WHM with the spaces intact so am not sure why this is happening.

Pointing An A-Record To A PLESK Server
I am currently having a few technical difficulties with configuring my PLESK server to accept an A Record from another domain. Perhaps I have been going about this all wrong but I will explain what I am trying to do and how I have currently been trying to get it to work. Hopefully you might have a suggestion for me to try.

We currently run an On-Demand web design platform. This CMS can be completely rebranded for our Partners who can then sell this facility to their clients. There is only one installation of the code base but we need to give our partners a their own web address to access the cms.

For example:
cms.altstudio.com.au
cms.pcgraphicart.com.au

cms.pcgraphicart.com.au has been set up as a domain alias. The reason this is working is because the primary domain pcgraphicart.com.au is also hosted on this server.

So I thought if the partner has their domain delegated elsewhere then I could simply get them to create an A record for their chosen subdomain and point it to our IP address, then I could configure the domain alias again for their particular A record and hey presto. Unfortunately not so easy.

Here are two of the examples of what is happening

cms.newlight.com.au - their root domain is delegated elsewhere, but they have created an A-record for that subdomain and pointed it to 202.60.87.185. Now it reaches my server as I see a PLESK error page at that address.

At this stage I don't really know what to try to get PLESK to register that entry. I have created a domain alias for cms.newlight.com.au on the cms.altstudio.com.au account but it didn't pick things up.

Another example is cms.abconsulting.com.au
