Why Can't I Get To My Webpage From Other Computers On The Internet

Jul 23, 2009

so i already have a registered domain name (www dot guiceassociates dot com) which has a DNS record with an authoritative DNS server linking my domain to my IP address 70.91.50.213 (nslookup using "www dot guiceassociates dot com" or "www dot guiceassociates dot co dot uk" will confirm this).

I have a linux computer(it is successfully running apache, php5, and mysql, and the firewall has http services as an allowed service) that i am using as my webserver. i have statically assigned it the ip address 192.168.200.3

My router is configured to forward port 80 traffic to 192.168.200.3
however, when i type www dot guiceassociates dot com into a browser window from another computer, i get nothing (cannot connect to server)

I'm still new to the idea of hosting my own web server, so any and all advice is welcome, but my ultimate question is:

why isn't this set up working?

Apache :: Every Single Webpage Visit Redirects To Webpage - Redirect Loop

Sep 1, 2014

I've been having troubles with my website recently . I installed a forum software (MyBB), and the problem started happening shortly after. I've talked to a few site admins in the MyBB community but they all say that none of MyBB's scripts are capable of doing this.

Every single webpage i visit redirects me to a webpage which then has a redirect loop. I've removed all recent changes made to my website via FTP and restarted apache, but i'm still receiving the same error. I'm not quite sure what to do.

Link to my website: ript.onl
Screenshots: [URL] ....

Every single webpage does this. I dont have any .htaccess files around and i've checked a few config files for anything out of the ordinary, but haven't seen anything.

Now, when I opened my external hard disk, I found a lot of .dat files. I am wondering how can I convert them to something human readable, or how can I move the information to my new computer!

Apache :: Unable To See Symlink From Other Computers

May 12, 2015

I installed Apache2. In the the folder "var/www/html" I created a symlink to a different HDD that holds a number of movie files. My thinking is that it would be easy to access the movies through a browser from any computer on my local network.

I used the following command string while in the html directory, and created the symlink:

ln -sd /media/guy/movie1/Movies test

While sitting at the server, when I click on "test" it opens the correct directory and exposes the files. If I surf to apache from another machine it does not show the symlink.

Here the permissions on the symlink

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 May 11 19:56 test -> /media/guy/movie1/Movies

Protect Your Password In A Cyber Cafe And On Public Computers

Jun 30, 2009

Sometime you must have gone to a cyber cafe or used public computers to access the internet or mail.

Public computers are most prone to password hacking. Anyone can simply install a keylogger software to hack your password. Keylogging is one of the most insidious threats to a users personal information. Passwords, credit card numbers, etc.

It is very easy for the keylogger to harvest passwords. Each and every keystroke (whatever you type on the keyboard) gets recorded in the keylogger software and the person installing it can easily view what you have typed in.

For example,if you go to hotmail.com and check your mails. Say your ID is aaabbbccc@hotmail.com and password is snoopy2,the keylogger software records your usename and password in its log file as

www.hotmail.comaaabbbccc@hotmail.comsnoopy2

Risky isnt it?

Theres a solution to this problem and you can easily fool the software!!

The keylogger software sees and records everything, but it doesnt understand what it sees,it does not know what to do with keys that are typed anywhere other than the password or user name fields.

So between successive keys of the password if you enter random keys, the keylogger software wont ever come to know where you typed in what..

In the process of recording the keys, the string that the keylogger receives will contain the password, but embedded in so much random junk that discovering it is infeasible.

So...

1. Go to hotmail.com or yahoo.com or any other site where you need to insert a password or PIN.

2. Type in your user ID.

3. Type in the first characterof the password.

4. Click on the address bar in the browser, type in some random charachters.

5. Again go to password field and type in the second character of the password and probably third too.

6. Again go to the address bar and type in a few more random characters.

7. Back to the password field and the next characters of the password.

Keep on repeating the process till you type in the full password in the password field.

Instead of the password snoopy2,the keylogger now gets:
www.hotmail.comspqmlainsdgsosdgfsodgfdpuouuyhdg2

Heres a total of 26 random characters have been inserted among the 7 characters of the actual password!

No doubt it takes a little bit of more time than the usual process, but you are safe and secure that way!

Webpage Not Updating On My Network

Feb 2, 2007

I was developing a website on my friend's server.

Due to some DNS problems we couldn't figure out how to resolve, I decided to just go commercial and bought a Dreamhost package.

I updated the nameservers and the DNS has since propagated. At work today, starting with the fresh, new root, I installed vbulletin and started configuring my website checking my progress live.

However, I get home and I go to my URL and it's still the same as it was when my website was hosted on my friend's server. With a DNS and WHOIS check, the nameservers definately propagated correctly. The FTP contents are the way they were at work. I've cleared all my cache and private data. However I STILL see the old "revert" of what my website USED to contain.

I called up a friend to go to my website and he says it's displaying what it should and verified that it's just on my side. How can I resolve this?

I've reset my router and modem and computer and cleared every temp and cache I know about.

Best Free "remote Control" Software For Managing A Few Dozen Computers? (Nonprofit)

May 23, 2008

I have a client who runs a non-profit organization that puts computer kiosks (running Windows XP) in public areas where low-income people can use them for free. They take old computers, put them back together, and then install them into local grocery stores, gas stations, etc.. where people can use them for free.

This is non-profit work, so their budget is pretty much spent on hardware and upkeep of the computers. (ie: internet connections, Windows licenses, etc.)

They have about 3 dozen computers now, and managing them is becoming more and more time consuming and difficult so they have asked if I can make some suggestions to make things more efficient (easier).

All the computers are built with a hidden partition which contains a drive image. If the computer gets too "screwy", then they can simply re-image the machine and "restart". However, this requires a trip to the local computer, which takes a lot of time, and all of this is done by volunteers...)

One idea I had was to use "remote control" software so the volunteers doing the work don't have to actually go and physically see the computer when debugging a problem, updating software, reimaging the drive, or whatever.

A typical problem might be that the store owner where the machine is deployed will call and say, "It's not working any more". So now a volunteer must go and visit the computer to see what's wrong... but with remote control software they could simply login remotely, fix whatever is the problem, or if needed start the drive re-image.. without ever needing to visit the computer. (Save time!)

So... I've done quite a bit of research on remote control software, and there seems to be lots of "for pay" options. However, the organization just does not have the budget to pay for remote control on a few dozen computers. (Also, they are expecting to roll this out in multiple cities soon, so the solution must be scalable, and paying per computer just isn't realistic given their budget.)

I found the "VNC" remote control software, and that seems to be perfect. It's free, and seems to work well.

However, there are no less then 10 different "flavors" of VNC available, so I'm hoping perhaps a few people here might be able to recommend which one is the best solution. tightVNC, ultraVNC, miniVNC, there are even a few pay (one time small fee) projects.

I have no idea which one is best for them, and I just don't have time myself to investigate and test this all out to make an informed decision.

I'm hoping you can help me narrow down the many choices to either one or two options.

Here's what it needs to do:

- Needs to be "always on" so that the remote control software works immediately after the computer boots. (ie: Even if nobody logs in, remote user should still be able to see the screen and do a login.)

- Be impossible for computer users to remove.

- Be able to take control of the machine without anyone being physically present to click "ok" prompts or accept incoming connection, etc.

- Work with remote machines that are in a LAN with an unknown IP. (Some of the computers are plugged into an existing LAN so that they can use the existing internet connectivity.) In this case, the remote machine does not have a public IP, and the current IP might change after each reboot. The remote control software must be able to "see" the local machine, even if the IP changes, etc... (Maybe some software that runs on the remote machine that "sends" its IP or updates a hostname to an intermediary server every few minutes?

- Allow file transfers between remote machine and controlling machine.

TurnKey Internet

Apr 16, 2009

I recently placed an order (based on an add I found while browsing this forum) for a quad xeon. Everything went smoothly and their live support was very helpful. About 2 hours after receiving my confirmation I received an email containing a credit card form. The form is asking me to fill out everything I filled out during the billing process (including my credit card number, security code, and bank number). I know this form is basically a contract so they can bill me if I go over my bandwidth limit, but it seems pretty odd. Is this a normal thing or should I be weary about filling this out?

Solid Internet

Sep 14, 2009

My site/e-mail/etc that is hosted by Solid Internet has been down for almost 2 weeks. This is causing me some major problems.

Their support forum doesn't work, their phones go straight to voicemail, their voicemail inbox is full, they don't respond to e-mails or support tickets. I'm not sure what else I can do to find out what the problem is?

I've only just renewed for a further year too so I'm not overly keen on flushing all that money down the toilet.

I don't think I have any site back ups, certainly no recent ones so I don't want to lose everything which I assume I'll need to do to move to a new host?

Vps @ TurnKey Internet

Jan 17, 2009

first off i will start by saying, as you can see.. this is my first post. Normally i just browse around, but i had to sign up and post a brief thread, about the awesome service i have received over at TurnKey.

A few weeks before christmas break, i signed up with Turnkey VPS, which was quickly setup. I've never really worked with a vps before, or much with servers at all really.

But their prompt and detailed explanation of how things work inside the control panel really helped me out. Then, a week after christmas break, with the economy going south, i had got laid off from work. I sent them an email saying that i wished to cancel cause of my current job status, and was suprised to see that Adam, their president had emailed me back himself and offered me a 90 day free run till i could get back on my feet. and if at the end of the 90days i hadent got on my feet, i could cancel completly. Since then, my job had announced that it would only be set backs and not termination - so i still have my job, and i dont have to cancel anymore!

Wholesale Internet

Dec 1, 2008

Wholesale Internet HAS THE WORST BILLING SYSTEM / CUSTOMER SUPPORT SYSTEM EVER
It has been 3 months and I have yet received my refund. If your server is up then its fine but I have contacted Aaron (great guy) 30+ times but he's always busy

Here's the issue. In ubersmith we have paypal + a spare credit card running. I setup a paypal subscription so I was to be billed automatically.

Ubersmith however was not tracking the subscription payments and instead billed our credit card.

This left me with double the charges for 3 months on my credit card and paypal ...

I have asked for a refund since September and have heard NOTHING.

I have vouched for Wholesale internet plenty but if this does not get taken care of Aaron I will be chargebacking every single charge for the last year ... maybe that'll get your attention

The billing department = Rebecca - a woman who neither answers the phone nor emails

Wholesale Internet ..

Jul 25, 2008

We aquired a dedicated with wholesaleinternet a few months back. Other than slightly annoying but very short periods of downtime several times a week there were no major problems. Then the server became unreachable.

After many hours I finally get a tech response to my priority TT stating a fsck had to be performed. My initial worry was that the HD was failing as huge sectors should not be corrupt - certainly no software was running to cause this.

Over the next 2 weeks the server went down every 24-48 hours with exactly the same problem and the same resolution. Each time it took over 4 hours for a priority TT to be responded to and for the problem to be fixed. 8 hour waits were far from uncommon.

After pointing out the HD worries several times (what else could it be at this stage?) 2 weeks later the girl 'looking after the problem' finally agrees with us and agrees to replace the HD. I drag off any data I need (ie since the last backup) in a brief period of uptime and give her the go ahead. The server goes down again and over 48 hours later they tell me a new HD has been installed.

BEFORE the server went down for the final time we made it very clear that we simply cannot wait any longer and had no choice but to cancel our account. This was ignored and the HD changed anyway. We also made it clear that the huge problems caused should mean that there was no way we should require a month's notice to leave them. The downtime, huge delays in responding to priority tickets and inability of tech staff to recognise a simple HD failure means we need to go elsewhere. The downtime has cost us a LOT of money and several very good google results still have not recovered so the cost to us continues in a big way.

Despite the 2 weeks of more or less continual downtime causing us to have no choice but to switch hosts they now have the audacity to send debt collectors after us for not giving 1 months notice. On cancelling the account my reasons were made very, very clear and that given the situation I would not expect to need a months notice and certainly not to be charged.

So my advice...look elsewhere. There are some very professional companies about with competent tech staff and who give a damn about even their lower end customers.

BQ Internet Corp.

Mar 28, 2008

I have used BQ Internet (bqbackup) for a dedicated server backup for months... On one occasion a while back, I started getting the now infamous "out of space" error message.

They fixed it, that time, fairly quickly telling me it was because they were "changing servers..."

Now, for the last two weeks, their server is telling me it's outta space, and I am getting absolutely no response from them whatsover...

I have sent emails using my regular email accounts plus sent emails using a gmail account.

Are they in some sort of trouble or something?

I guess I am going to have to look for another rsync backup provider...

"Offsite" backups are extremely important to me and my customers, and not having it available for two weeks is completely unacceptable.
