Where To Buy And What Hardware Spec To Run Big Bandwidth Download Service ?
Oct 31, 2009
i find some company rent dedicated server to offer download server,
the package of month bandwidth is 1TB,and month fee is about $8,
for a stand server with $120 permonth,
it can only run 15 accounts,
and it will need 15TB per month to use,
i wonder where to buy so cheaper dedicated server can offer 15TB with $120 month fee,
and what hardware to run 15TB but only $120 per month?

When a company offers you 1000gb bandwidth,
Is that for upload or download or maybe both?

which case is more preferred: a shared web hosting service with unlimited space/bandwidth, or a dedicated one with limited space/bandwidth?

Seems like some of the more premium colo's out there will only do full racks or higher. And to me, "premium" are companies like equinix, savvis, and iland.
We are coming from managed servers at Rackspace and are used to a pretty awesome support level. While reliability and uptime are the most important to us we also need a great service level.
Anyone have any recommendations on any Colo's that provide that sort of premium bandwidth, data center and service but also does half-racks?

What kind of spec would I need for serving direct/hotlinking 100mb+ files? I've looked all over the place but couldn't find anything.
And let say a sudden spike of 400+ people and they are downloading a file [url]simultaneously that is 100mb+ in size.
How much ram would I require?

What vps you can get for 50$-100$ max. I need to find some offers for a friend.
What is needed for this vps, much ram, unmetered bandwith (10mbps), as much HD space as possible. Lxadmin is fine for cp.

I am just wondering what specs on a server is needed to run a website like Craigslist, where there will be thousandsd of users posting data into a database and at the same time retrieving information from MySQL database.
We will not be streaming videos or anything of that sort.

Just looking at getting a 1u box with a local provider. They provide .75amps per box.
Previously we have gone a bit crazy and gone with dell 1950s with dual quad cores and a few disks. As you can imagine these specs go well over the .75 amps.
What type of spec server would you recommend for that power? Looking at something for small scale web hosting, duall HDs and about 2gb of ram.

I'm considering building the following 1U rack server for colocation. I'm completely new to rack servers and colocation so I would be very grateful to hear your opinions:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU
ASUS P5B-VM SE Motherboard
8GB PC5300 667MHz Non-ECC RAM
500GB HDD
345W Power Supply
I also have a few specific questions:Are there any differences between the Q6600 and it's Xeon equivalent? (especially power wise?)
Are there any disadvantages using a desktop motherboard in a (1U) server? (again, especially power wise?)
I've read that non-ECC memory is a lot more acceptable for servers now than it was a few years ago, is this true?
Does a 500GB drive use much more power than a 160GB drive?
How many watts of power can I expect the server to use?
Does a 1U chassis usually come with uATX mounting points?

I run a large service on 2 machines (we're talking 8x2.66Ghz processing power, 4-6GB ram, etc), however we are thinking about creating a node/clustered setup to help spread the load, bandwidth, mysql (having one server for hundreds of thousands of databases is not wise it seems :p), diskspace etc. Lots of machines just seems to be a cheaper and more powerful option.
Would you advise going with lots of lower end machines, or just a few mid-range machines.
Here is what I propose:
3 of these
Dual Xeon 3GHZ Dual-Core (4x3GHz)
3GB RAM
500GB Sata Drive
4000 GB Bandwidth
100mbit
or
4 of these
XEON X3220 QUAD CORE 2.4GHZ 1066FSB
2GB DDR2 RAM (Upgradeable)
250GB HDD
2000GB Bandwidth
100mbit
or
7 of these
Dual Xeon 3.06 Ghz
2GB DDR2 RAM
250GB SATA
2000GB BW/MONTH
100mbit
All of the above are roughly similar prices in total.

I have a Sonicwall NSA 3500. Does anyone know if you can use it to create bandwidth charts of Network Objects (e.g. IPs or Groups of IPs)?
I am thinking something like Cacti, but I don't know the code to pull that info or if it's even technically possible.

First of all let me tell you, i want VPS hosting not for hosting websites but for downloading and uploading purpose..(not specifically torrents)
I have already got VPS hosting with VPSland.com at $18 per month with 50% off for first month that i have just got yesterday.
My hardware spcifications are:
Lite plan with 6GB harddisk space, 512 MB Ram, 200 GB Bandwidth, Intel core 2 quad CPU Q6600 2.40 Ghz. with one dedicated IP...
It also comes with remote desktop and window 2003 set up..
Can i get this anywhere or even more for cheaper than this as i just want it for downloading and uploading and web surfing because my internet connection is not that fast (i am at 256KBps)
Also, If i download something to my VPS server, is there any fast way to get that on my local machine. because my VPS is fast but when it comes to transfer files from VPS to my local machine, it again takes some time. Is there solution for this..
I also find sarorahosting very cheap at $7.99 per month with 30GB Hard disk, 384 Ram, 100 GB bandwith, and 2 IPs......it is a good host.. any review on that..
Probably, i am looking for such cheap VPS for my downloading and uploading but not sure about their service and uptime..

My site is hosted on eUKhost, and there are some users who get an incomplete download of an msi-file (about 12 MB in size) hosted on my website. They don't get an error in their browser, it's just like they have a complete download.
The incomplete file users download is usually about 2.7 MB big. When they re-download the file afterwards, they never seem to have the problem again.
It seems to happen completely at random and I haven't got a clue what the reason could be.

A user from Europe clicks the same link and they go to Netherlands server.
A user from Asia clicks the same link and they go to Hong Kong.
How can I configure Lighttpd to point *.flv to a specific server based on location. I don't want the www.domain.com to change, I would like it to always show www.domain.com but point to different countries depending on where the person is located.
I want this for *.flv only
