First of all let me tell you, i want VPS hosting not for hosting websites but for downloading and uploading purpose..(not specifically torrents)
I have already got VPS hosting with VPSland.com at $18 per month with 50% off for first month that i have just got yesterday.
My hardware spcifications are:
Lite plan with 6GB harddisk space, 512 MB Ram, 200 GB Bandwidth, Intel core 2 quad CPU Q6600 2.40 Ghz. with one dedicated IP...
It also comes with remote desktop and window 2003 set up..
Can i get this anywhere or even more for cheaper than this as i just want it for downloading and uploading and web surfing because my internet connection is not that fast (i am at 256KBps)
Also, If i download something to my VPS server, is there any fast way to get that on my local machine. because my VPS is fast but when it comes to transfer files from VPS to my local machine, it again takes some time. Is there solution for this..
I also find sarorahosting very cheap at $7.99 per month with 30GB Hard disk, 384 Ram, 100 GB bandwith, and 2 IPs......it is a good host.. any review on that..
Probably, i am looking for such cheap VPS for my downloading and uploading but not sure about their service and uptime..
when I'm using any download manager such as FDM or DAP file download with extension *.r instead to *.rm. but when using windows default downloader file downloaded with right extension *.rm.
So what do you think about it? please note that I'm not change any configuration in server.
I`m not looking for a debate on the APF, CFS or whatever firewall is better!
Seems the RFXnetworks website is not available, does anyone have the latest APF floating around for a wget download?
Has RFX gone for good or is this outage blip - anyone know?

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy site is hosted on eUKhost, and there are some users who get an incomplete download of an msi-file (about 12 MB in size) hosted on my website. They don't get an error in their browser, it's just like they have a complete download.
The incomplete file users download is usually about 2.7 MB big. When they re-download the file afterwards, they never seem to have the problem again.
It seems to happen completely at random and I haven't got a clue what the reason could be.
Is there a free site out there that lets users download files directly... ie there is no submission forms or download verifications?

We have a video streaming server, sometimes the server gets really slow and when we digg into it, we see that the same ip is trying to download the same file many many times. for example i either run this command
netstat -n | grep :80 | awk '{ print $5 }' | awk -F: '{ print $1 }' | sort | uniq -c | sort -n | tail
or go to WHM and see the 'apache stats' and i see 100 http connections from the same ip, trying to download the same video 100 times,,,
what is this? is this some sort of attack? could that be 100 different people that use a proxy? or what is going on?
im using vmware in centOS dedicated server

Anyone have a good download test in chicago other then FDC's?
I was told i was upgraded to a 1GBPS port for free by my host(from a 10mbit) which is sort of weird, i want to confirm. at this time FDC's 100MB file takes me about 3 seconds to download and downloads at 44.7M/s.
the file is too small for me to try and pull 1gbit, by that speed i have a 500mbit line odviosely but i want to test against something outside of FDC.
I've been trying in vain to find out how to download files from online sites directly to my server hosted with Siteground. Basically, I figure why bother downloading to my local HDD when I back everything up on my online server anyway.
I know this classes as a server to server file transfer but I want to download things like software, particularly Linux distros, and archive them directly on my server. I just can't think how to word it any other way. I use my browser and click the download link and it asks me to save it to my local HDD but instead I'd like to save it to my backup server bypassing my local comp totally.
Currently Siteground give me "unlimited" bandwidth and "unlimited" storage space, overselling obviously but now I want to use some of my space. My home upload speed it 20kb on average so this is why I'd rather upload/download/save interesting software etc onto my backup server.
I've looked briefly at WGET and CURL but it looks too complicated. I'd just like to be able to FTP all my 'normal' downloads right onto my server. I'd use an intermediary service for this as well as this backup is for non-private files only, if only I knew how to word the concept.
I just don't know how to search for the right tools or whatever for what I want to do.
I just want to add a "save to my server" option to my normal download dialog for want of a better description.
What is typical for a download speed of a file from a VPS?
Will a dedicated server do better?
Network connection?
Does RAM have anything to do with speed?
Who has the best VPS download speed?
How do you know if the vendor isn't cheating somehow?
I'm starting a file download site. I've done a lot of research and I'm currently planning a head for growth and scaling. Looking to serve around 250-500 thousand 5MB files a day.
I would like some input from people that KNOW what they are talking about, hopefully people that have hosted/ran similar sites.
The main question I need answered is what will be the first bottle neck for a single download server will run into when delivering the following.
File size = 10MB.
Number of downloads = As many 1.2mbit download streams as possible.
Example Server, lets say...
Intel 5405
8GB Ram
2x640GB RE3 Hardware Raid 1
1000mbit
Am I correct in assuming the bottle neck will be the HD's here? So would I be right in assuming this could handle around 200 concurrent downloads @ 1.2mbit(250mbit)?
I wanted to know a rough estimation of resources needed for a download server with these specifications..
1- No cPanel needed
2- Unmanaged plan
3- VPS or Dedicated
4- Space needed -- not much . maybe maximum 20 giga
5- Direct links with no software to upload or download all is done through FTP and HTTP browsing
6- Bandwidth / month more than 300 giga and less than 600 giga ( can compromise ) .
7- maximum simultaneous downloads will be 10 - 20 individuals on the same moment
8- Files on server wont exceed 30 mega per file
How much Ram/CPU mainly I may need?
I have a website which has a FLV player serving .flv files which are hosted in the server. I notice that some users are directly downloading the files using the direct URL and they seem to be using download managers for that which is opening several Apache connections and open slows down Apache. I want to prevent this. I thought of preventing it using a .htaccess file but did not help. This is what I used:
<Files *>
order allow,deny
allow from 127.0.0.1
allow from localhost
deny from all
</Files>
I thought this would work but it doesn't as it is blocking the FLV player from playing the file. Can anyone tell me the right way to do it?

What download speed do you get
I have 100MB/Sec port and normally always get around 500-600kbps download speed with DedicatedNOW but today I am only getting around 170kbps
I have a 10mb connection and when downloading file from here [url]I get 1.2MB/sec download speed
I asked support to confirm if I had 100MB/sec port and got a reply with:
"Your server is on a 100mbps port:
-bash-3.2# ethtool eth0 |grep Speed:
Speed: 100Mb/s
-bash-3.2#"
Sounds like a local issue. I am able to download at:
Response: 226-File successfully transferred
Response: 226 32.674 seconds (measured here), 6.12 Mbytes per second
I've two shared hosting accounts, one is hostgator and other is godaddy.
I've uploaded a file (.flv) on hostgator and same file on godaddy.
here a link to both
Hostgator flv
Goddady flv
Now i am use a Download manager " free download manager" to download files
The hostgator file downloads at 17-35kb/s
The godaddy file downloads at 200kb/s
I am using 2Mbps dsl.
Also my hostgator cpanel loads slow. and other files are downloads at very low max 40kb/s.
What are the issues. I've contacted hostgator support and they say that every thing is ok on their end.
I have to stream videos on hostgator but the speed is too slow. and it buffers alot.
I'm currently using ipower, which just switched to fewer but larger servers. The impact for me is a new throttle in download speed, which is about 350KB/sec (although I can do FTP downloads when logged in at 500KB/sec. Previously, with the more but smaller servers, you just got a share of what was available on the server with no throttle, and when activity was low on a server, it was enough to max out my cable's limitation of about 1.5MB/sec (12 mega-bits / second).
It seems that few web hosting sites will specify typical download speeds from a web hosting account. I'm hoping that members here could report what they are getting from various web hosting services.
My web site is
jeffareid.net
A "hobby" web site, mostly videos from car racing games, just niche market enough to not attract excessive traffic.
What's best way to limit upload/download from/to server?

View 0 Replies View RelatedI am having a large problem moving my sites over to another server. WHM is timing out transferring some large sites that are 4-16 gigs in size, so I tried to manually pkgacct and was able to get one of the accounts setup as root, moved it over to public_html so I could wget from the 2nd server. No luck, permission denied. I tried to change permissions in FTP and found out I couldn't change them so I chmodded the file as root, no luck.
From there I set chown and changed it to the user of the FTP account and was able to modify the file from FTP. I'm still getting a forbidden message when I try wget or download from browser.
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /backup/cpmove-azcorp.tar.gz on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
At this point I'm clueless, I chmodded the file to 777 so what else could be causing this?
Can someone who has a server with ecatel check what their download speeds are from USA?
I'm getting < 30kb/s and the port is at 20mb/s... so there should be much more speed.
