Software Or Service To Allows Shared Storage Access

Sep 17, 2008

I'm trying to setup a shared virtual storage enviroment (much like a external harddisk) for about 5 users working offsite/remote in a drag n drop environment like windows folder.. It's mostly just doc/xls file.

Is there any service out that that allows this or software I could use if I have my own webspace/server?

Large Backup Storage

Feb 9, 2009

I have a website that is approx 50GB, that I essentially would like to take offline for a while. Obviously, while the site is offline, I don't want to be paying for my server.

Can anyone let me know of some options to "store" this mammoth of a site. Downloading it locally is not an option, so it needs to stay in the cloud for the lowest possible price.

Cheap VPS For Backup With A Lot Of Storage

May 20, 2008

I'm searching a vps to store backups of my "primary vps".

My requirements:
40+ GB disk
400+ Bandwidth
price < 40$/month

a nice plus would be:
UK/Europe location
ubuntu 64bit

The best plan that I've found with these specs is the Serveraxis VS000.5G-0050.0GM: 512MB RAM, 50GB disk, 400GB/month, 35$/month.

Is there something better? (more storage for the same price or same storage for a minor price)

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Required Storage For Multi-volume Scheduled FTP Backup

Apr 8, 2015

My Centos server running Plesk12 is running scheduled backups every sunday 3AM.

The backup is configured so that it's created as a multivolume backup with a volume size of 2047MB.

The backup is placed on my Personal FTP repo (another plesk12 server mounted with big storage).

The backup content is configured to backup server config and content (all).

The problem I have is when the backup is running I can see that it creates the volumes and stores it locally. After it send all the volumes the the external FTP repo it will delete the local (tmp) data. See my attached screenshot for storage health during backup.

Is this behaviour normal? This way we can never run a backup to an external FTP repo when our server passed 50% storage. Is it not normal to:

- Create a volume
- Send it to FTP repo
- Delete volume locally
- Repeat until done

Scalable Raid Storage Storage On A Budget? Also Hdd Reliability Q's

Sep 20, 2007

I'm completely torn on going the absolute budget route vs spending more for something that'll allow easy upgradeability in the future. I basically need lots of space but file sending-- media like mp3s, video, etc.

it'll be raid 5 and I'll need at least 2-3TB initially but the ability to expand would be nice.

option 1:
nice chassis with plenty of hotswap bays with sas expanders
expensive sas raid card

option 2:
cheap chassis to serve "immediate" needs and go with more later.
not sure what I'd use as a card? maybe even onboard?

regarding reliability: I once saw a database of failure rates of different models. raptor was the most reliable of the "desktop" drives. anyone have the link? I'm wondering of the seagate ES drives are worth the extra money vs the non-ES drives. they're supposedely more reliable and the "server versions" of sata drives.

Bad Crissic Backup Service

Oct 23, 2008

First of all, forgive me if I am posting this on the wrong section .
I am the owner of CyberSP.org, a really small service provider running on a2b2, and PROUD OF IT.

I had a deal with Skylar, the owner of Crissic.com, which I am not going to talk about it in this forums, but, all I can say, is that he offered me a 1 year 50gb backup account, (well, he didn't offer , it was our deal).

About 2 months using it, and it was running perfectly until then, I thought: ok, let's see how's the server going, and then, I made df -h and it shows: 3GB Available.
WHAT? 3 GB available on a BACKUPS SERVER? How's this possible!!!??

So, opened the first ticket regarding this, waited about 6 ~8 hours and he said (Skylar): We're working on the issue, bla bla bla.

Well, fine.

Some days later, it shows 158 GB Free.... Problem solved.

Now, some days later, I see that the backups was taking DAYS to do, haha! It's true, DAYS! (It was NOT a2b2 problem.)

So, logged in by SSH to the backups server (took me 5 minutes to log in!), and it was
SUPER slow, reaaaaaaally slow, downloaded a backup (at 200 kb/s xD) which I needed, and logged out.

Tried to contact Skylar on MSN, but he then log out some time later. (without answer)
Heh, I thought: well, this is a temporary problem, etc etc.

3 Days passed, yesterday I opened a ticket regarding that problem:

Dear Crissic,

The backup server seems to have issue for some days already.

It's more than slow, it's super slow.

This has been all day... the backup service was great, but it seems that last week problems arrived.

uptime
3:40AM up 136 days, 18:31, 1 user, load averages: 4.25, 5.27, 5.45
--
$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/da1s1d 1.9T 1.8T 168G 92% /
---
So, let's see, load is high and this is super super slow, and there are some GB's free for backups, but... can we really use it? I mean you guys should just put some more drives.
Please fix this instability issue, as this is causing my server to don't make the backups, which is really really serious.
Regards
----------
Note: it was opened as CRITICAL! 20 Hours without answer... what a poor service.
Every service providers know that backups ARE URGENTLY.

About some minutes ago, received an email regarding my ticket, saying that I didn't have any action, so the ticket was closed(automated ones), bla bla bla, I replied to it saying: No answer from crissic on a critical ticket, at backups service??? <- Only to keep the ticket opened.

And then, tried to contact Skylar on MSN, until he log out, 2 minutes later .

The server doesn't even answer anymore :

I know that I didn't gave him money, but our deal was 1 year of free 50gb backup, so I deserve respect and to be treated as a loyal client, I don't even should say FREE, because it was paid, in another way.

I have all my bills at a2b2 PAID (anyone from their staff can confirm), I DO NOT owe anything, all I want is to have a good service, I'm a honest guy.

From a2b2, everything is perfect, from Crissic, this is horrible. Really... I don't have money at this moment to buy another backup account.

This serves to prove you, that maybe Skylar is not a good person as you thought so.

Automatic Backup Service

Jul 2, 2008

I have around 750 megabytes of data on a Windows 2003 server, and I would like to find an off-site / web service that I can use to back this data up incrementally at least nightly. Nightly incrementals would probably be 1-25MB in size. Full backups could run every other week or monthly, as the update rate is fairly low.

Ideally, I'd like to find some software to make this set-it and forget-it. Of course, periodic audits of the backup would be performed, but I don't want something I have to nanny constantly.

As I said, this is a Windows server, so a service would be ideal. A scheduled task would be just as good, I suppose.

i found the service for backup of SMTP:

If your mail server or network goes down, our backup SMTP can receive and store your incoming e-mail for up to 30 days. E-mail and ecommerce orders will keep coming, giving your IT staff time to repair the problem. Our standard service reattempts delivery every 15 minutes until your mail server is back online.

Seems that is good decision if you want to provide quality services for your cusutmers, but i want to know your opinion regarding this service or similar. did you use services like this , and can you share some experience for this?

SAS Storage

Feb 9, 2008

Not sure if this is beyond anyones experience here or knowledge but I thought I would give it a try here and see if I can get any insight on this.

Recently I had to work with a IBM xSeries 226 server which runs two SCSI Ultra320 drives in it at this time. I've actually purchased two extra drives for it but the distributor sent me the wrong drives for that server. Now they are saying its my fault of not proving them with more information but I think stating that I have two SCSI Ultra320 drives would be enough for them to send the right ones.

Now they sent me the IBM SAS Serial ATA SCSI drives, so I was wondering if anyone in here has enough knowledge to possibly provide me on the insight on the solution I think might be right to still use these two drives and not being stuck with a $2000 bill and two drives that I don't use.

My solution would be to buy one of the support or any Adaptec SAS Serial ATA SCSI controller cards and put it into one of the available PCIe slots and connect the drives. I've tried contacting IBM regarding this but they want $200 bucks just to say "yeah it will work or no it wont".

Logically I think it would work, the only thing I'm afraid is that let say I spend $400 - $1000 bucks on a controller card and it doesn't work they way you would think, then I'm out $3000 bucks. (drives are $2000 + $1000 for a controller card).

Storage, Why Do They Do This

Jul 8, 2007

I just clicked on the Lunarpages webhosting ad at the top of this forum. Not really hunting for hosting myself but regularly suggest places to clients.

I noticed something strange. Their business account has unlimited storage:

# Unlimited Storage
# 3500 Gigs Data Transfer

For 21.95 per month. That's more space than you get with their virtual private servers.

Now we know that's not possible, machines have limits right? I've seen other hosting providers offer unlimited features as well - and since all servers have limited space and bandwidth abilities how can they offer these types of services with out the FTC cracking down for false advertising?

Beyond that, I don't recommend any service that offers unrealistic plans. Am I just overreacting since it seems more and more common?

** note, this isn't an attack on Lunarpages. They were there and it made this thought pop in my head.

I just like to thank Ryan from Aquarius Storage for helping me the other day set up my test account and test the server's loading time with my website. I now have fully transferred from my previous host, PeachyDandy, as my site loaded very slowly. I have now cancelled my account with PeachyDandy.

With Aquarius Storage my website now loads twice as fast as before. Site loading time according to Pingdom:

PeachyDandy - Average of 6 Seconds
Aquarius Storage - Average of 3 Seconds

Website - Mango Chico

Great job with the support Aquarius Storage! Moreover, the staff are very approachable and welcoming!

If you need speed, Aquarius Storage, is your hosting solution

Thumbs up Aquarius!
