setting up a server running ZFS as a backup server. My only problem is that it's very new to me, and naturally I'm skeptical of it's redundancy capabilities etc, I don't want to get burned. Anyone used ZFS, what's your experience with it?
I entered FreeDNS.afraid.org to set up a backup DNS for my rochasbusiness.com.br domain name. I want to use my own server as the primary DNS server, and I want to use FreeDNS as the secundary DNS server, both have to point to my own server.
So I accessed my registrar, I created the following name server:
Code: ns1.rochasbusiness.com.br -> 75.126.194.2 Then I set up the name servers as follows and saved:
Code: ns1.rochasbusiness.com.br ns2.afraid.org On my server in the zone file I set up:
Code: ns1.rochasbusiness.com.br. 14400 IN A 75.126.194.2 In FreeDNS, I set up my domain to point to the IP address of my server. But it doesn't seem to be set up properly: [url]
This is the scenario, domain.com are setup on server1, however server2 also has the same profile of domain.com as we use ns3 and ns4 using domain.com. This works fine with the nameserver setup on server2.
However I encounter problems as the emails from server2 won't reach server1 as there are duplicate profile on server2.
My question is how do I setup the DNS in cpanel/whm from server2 so the emails from server2 will reach server1?
I am interested in setting up my own server, more than anything just for the experience. I would like it to be a linux-based server and to be managed purly through the command line [i.e. no GUI].
Can anyone point me towards any goods book/resources for learning this? From what I read I believe that sitepoints own book does not cover any command line stuff, and everything happens purly through the GUI.
i bought a dedicated server but i dont know how to configure the dns, finally my brother said that he will setup the server on Wednesday after his work is over..but its quite a long time.can some one pls help me how to set the dns
my nameservers are ns1.vidztec.com and ns2.vidztec.com .
i bought the dedi recently. now since i will be moving all my sites over the server, the nameservers needs to be changed. i asked my host and they said they charge $90 to setup the nameservers, or i can buy the managed package. both costing more money than i thought.
i was wondering there must be a way for setting up one myself? it's a centOS 5. is there a tutorial out there?
I got a VPS, with Ubuntu server on it. I was wondering how i make it so that when it gets http requests, it shows a certain directory? I dont want to install a control panel, i want to learn to do everything manually, so that i can make the VPS show one domain only, with PHP and SQL and all that.
I can find out how to install PHP and SQL, but further than that,
FOr example. demonoid.com resolves to an IP. If you visit that ip directly, you get the site. How do i do that??
We have a database developed in oracel which is accessed be a lot of clients in our organization in our own domain ( a lan within the same building).
My own laptop is a cleint and I have access to the oracle sever finely.
Now I have developed a website in asp which has several quries for the databse. I am using my laptop as a webserver and broweser and the website is working excellent.
Now I want to
(1)All the people in my domain should have access to this website. I dont know how to do it. As it should be using a local network and my own computer should be a webserver. Please advise.
(2) Is it possible for my to uplodoad my site to a third-party webserver like yahoo or brainnet and people should have access to this site globally.
So I have designed some software for my brother who owns a business and needed a website to manage his clients and send emails to them and stuff. Right now we are using Hostmonster, which has been pretty good so far.
He was talking to me how it would be nice to be able to email the website and have the site automatically store the information in these emails into a database for information regarding his clients, which I know is possible, but not on a shared host it seems. I have tested my own email receiving script on a test server on my computer and it works fine. So we are continually finding our limits with a shared host. We have been looking into dedicated hosting, but as you all know its quite a price jump to go from $7 a month to $200+.
I got thinking and remembered that my dad has always had a business web plan from our ISP at home (cause he likes fast internet), which according to there website serves 1Mbps upload speed. We also have 2-3 old computers sitting at home that we don't use anymore (2)2ghz pentium 4 Dells and a 3.0ghz+ Pentium 4 HP. I was thinking we could probably just plug one of those into the router, forward some ports and have our own server up and running. For now we would only host this software I made for my bro, which is used by only 4 people, and that's not even at the same time usually. So there is very little load to deal with. But in the future we may put a few other sites that we have in mind which would use PHP and MySQL quite a bit.
I was just curious what some of your opinions were on creating a home server. I was looking at Ubuntu Server edition as a possibility, or XAMPP since all my machines are Windows XP. One machine doesn't work cause the hard drive is out, so if I use that I would probably have to put Ubuntu on it. Any suggestions on good server software would be great! I believe the business web plan my dad has also comes with a static IP as well, so that will help. Look forward to hearing your suggestions!
as you may know i am fairly new at setting up my own servers, well i was wondering if anyone out there could help me with setting up a dedicated game server to run halo or battlefield i have halo server installed on my windows xp box and followed the read me from start to finish, have port forwarded to the box but i just get the command line coming up saying dedicated server is running on map timberland <0 / 12 players>
im looking to host this game to the internet for people to play off my server not just for a lan server of the game.
Does anyone have experience with SSD drives in a server environment? I've seen now a few offers with SSD (Intel) and wondering if the speed is noticeable?
Are they worth it? from what I have been reading is that they a superior in reliability, but have issues with limited write cycles.
I'm setting up an invite and request email notification system for my website. Its pretty process heavy (since all the invites and requests will need to be sent right away), so I'm planning to setup another machine that is only designed to send the emails.
So I guess a SMTP server right?
I have no problems installing PHP and linking the user generated emails, but how does this work in regards to the domain name?
When the user imports his or her contacts on the main server (domainname.com) which then triggers the invite emails to be sent out with the SMTP server then how does that effect the clients' inboxes?
Since the website that they've registered to is www.domainname.com and the SMTP server domain name is smtp.domainname.com?
How does this all work?
What I worried about is the inbox seeing the emails as apart of a different domain name and then tossing it all to the junk box.
I have installed Apache, PHP and MySQL cus they are |33t.
I am using free dns.. the domain name is PowerfulPlacement.com
localhost WORKS
PowerfulPlacement.com does not work... Here is my VirtualHost in my httpd.conf..
NameVirtualHost 72.219.185.53 <VirtualHost 72.219.185.53:80> ServerName powerfulplacement.com ServerPath D:/www DocumentRoot "D:/www/" <directory D:/www/> allow from all </directory> </VirtualHost>
I dont know why powerfulplacement.com isn't working. I remember in linux I had to start up named or dns or something for it to work but I'm not quit sure with Windows.
when I get a server it comes with cPanel and I don't have to do much to get it going, but this time I don't need all the bells and whistles. What should I do to get a server with only CentOS to start running a pretty simple web server that just listens on whatever ip? I just want it to run php, mysql, and a web server which I know how to setup already. What I want to know is what else is necessary to setup? Resolvers, the hostname, bind, named, etc?
i am trying to setup a remote sql server , the web server which runs everything but sql is cpanel/WHM and the SQL server is Centos 5. I have installed mysql on the SQL server and it is running.
When i put the information in cpanel for remote sql setup it comes up with an error of :
usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'IP Address' failed error: 'Host 'hostname' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server' mysql has failed, please contact the sysadmin (result was "mysql has failed").
Is there something i have to enter in the remote sql server to allow the IP address of the cpanel server to be able to connect to the SQL server?.
I have an old computer that I want to setup as a server, for some small projects that I would like to publish online. I don't want to install any GUI's if I don't have to. What I would like to do is install linux (not sure which one), apache, php, and a webhost manager to handle the domains on that box. Can someone point me to a tutorial or in the right direction here? I would like to practice installing these things on my home box for now so I can get used to. I was going to install ubuntu, but thought that was to excessive for what I want.
Ive just purchased dedicated server (Windows Server 2003) I need to upload a large ammount of files.

My entire hosting life, I've been with Linux, so now that I'm looking to setup a Blackberry Enterprise Server account, things are very new to me.
Let me explain. I have a Blackberry and would like to setup a BES system such that I can get push email, calendar, and contacts for OTA syncing from my own personal.com
So, the question is, what sort of hosting package do I need to do this? And, will this cost a lot of money?
Again, I'm completely new to Windows hosting, so I'm not sure what I need and if it's even possible.
i just bought a dedicated server from godaddy. I need some help to set up a forum.I did everything as said in the guide but doesn't work.i asked for some help from the godaddy support team but they said that this is outside our realm of support.
