Setting Up A Web Server

We have a database developed in oracel which is accessed be a lot of clients in our organization in our own domain ( a lan within the same building).

My own laptop is a cleint and I have access to the oracle sever finely.

Now I have developed a website in asp which has several quries for the databse. I am using my laptop as a webserver and broweser and the website is working excellent.

Now I want to

(1)All the people in my domain should have access to this website.
I dont know how to do it. As it should be using a local network and my own computer should be a webserver. Please advise.

(2) Is it possible for my to uplodoad my site to a third-party webserver like yahoo or brainnet and people should have access to this site globally.

Setting Up A Mirror/Mirroring Site With A 2nd Web Host
I currently have a mirror site set-up on a seperate server (with a seperate web hosting company) for risk management purposes.

For zero downtime dependability, a load balancer cluster checking both servers in real time, and directing traffic at only servers that were online has been suggested.

However this option is rather expensive. Does anyone know of any other options?

Cpanel Domain Name Server (DNS) Setting For Email On 2 Seperate Server
This is the scenario, domain.com are setup on server1, however server2 also has the same profile of domain.com as we use ns3 and ns4 using domain.com. This works fine with the nameserver setup on server2.

However I encounter problems as the emails from server2 won't reach server1 as there are duplicate profile on server2.

My question is how do I setup the DNS in cpanel/whm from server2 so the emails from server2 will reach server1?

Server1 (www.domain.com)
ns1.domain.com
ns2.domain.com

Server2
ns3.domain.com
ns4.domain.com

I can find out how to install PHP and SQL, but further than that,

FOr example. demonoid.com resolves to an IP. If you visit that ip directly, you get the site. How do i do that??

No control panel, nothing. ONly one domain.

Setting Up My Own Server At Home
So I have designed some software for my brother who owns a business and needed a website to manage his clients and send emails to them and stuff. Right now we are using Hostmonster, which has been pretty good so far.

He was talking to me how it would be nice to be able to email the website and have the site automatically store the information in these emails into a database for information regarding his clients, which I know is possible, but not on a shared host it seems. I have tested my own email receiving script on a test server on my computer and it works fine. So we are continually finding our limits with a shared host. We have been looking into dedicated hosting, but as you all know its quite a price jump to go from $7 a month to $200+.

I got thinking and remembered that my dad has always had a business web plan from our ISP at home (cause he likes fast internet), which according to there website serves 1Mbps upload speed. We also have 2-3 old computers sitting at home that we don't use anymore (2)2ghz pentium 4 Dells and a 3.0ghz+ Pentium 4 HP. I was thinking we could probably just plug one of those into the router, forward some ports and have our own server up and running. For now we would only host this software I made for my bro, which is used by only 4 people, and that's not even at the same time usually. So there is very little load to deal with. But in the future we may put a few other sites that we have in mind which would use PHP and MySQL quite a bit.

I was just curious what some of your opinions were on creating a home server. I was looking at Ubuntu Server edition as a possibility, or XAMPP since all my machines are Windows XP. One machine doesn't work cause the hard drive is out, so if I use that I would probably have to put Ubuntu on it. Any suggestions on good server software would be great! I believe the business web plan my dad has also comes with a static IP as well, so that will help. Look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Setting Up A SMTP Server
I'm setting up an invite and request email notification system for my website. Its pretty process heavy (since all the invites and requests will need to be sent right away), so I'm planning to setup another machine that is only designed to send the emails.

So I guess a SMTP server right?

I have no problems installing PHP and linking the user generated emails, but how does this work in regards to the domain name?

When the user imports his or her contacts on the main server (domainname.com) which then triggers the invite emails to be sent out with the SMTP server then how does that effect the clients' inboxes?

Since the website that they've registered to is www.domainname.com and the SMTP server domain name is smtp.domainname.com?

How does this all work?

What I worried about is the inbox seeing the emails as apart of a different domain name and then tossing it all to the junk box.

Setting Up Identical Development Server
I have a dedicated Centos 5 server that is a live production server.

Now I need to have a server for testing things like new kernels, updated packages or changed settings to check if the web applications still run after these updates or changes before I update the live production server.

For this purpose I think the best way would be to have local virtual machines under vmware, also putting Centos 5 onto the virtual machine and even creating snapshots of it, before an update in case the update breaks too many things, I could just revert back.

My question is how can I make sure that I install the exact same packages and same versions of everything onto the development server that I have on the production server now?

How do I create an exact duplicate of my production server before I start to test updates?

Setting Up Download Server With Lighttpd
to getting a second server, specifically for downloads for my site. Without going into too much detail, my website requires that I get a separate server for downloads, and another for the webserver.

I've already gone ahead and configured the server I want; however, I'm trying to do something different from what I'm used to. I'd like to use Lighttpd, instead of apache, as well as not having cPanel installed on the server. I'd still have cPanel and Apache on my regular webserver, but I'd rather keep my download server relatively clean.

So, once I get my server, and I install Lighttpd, how do I go about setting up everything so that my two servers can communicate? I'd like the download server to be something like: download.mydomain.com , so would I have to set up an A Hostname on my webserver?

What are the steps I should take?

Seeking Buying/Setting-up Server
Me and a friend want to buy a really cheap server. We're kind of tired of buying hosting of people, VPS, dedi even if the price is really cheap.

For once we'd just like a little server ourself. We are located in the UK.

We're hoping to spend max £110. So far we ain't been able to get a good deal for that much.

(tried ebay)

To make a pc - it would cost us more than that pricewise. To buy an old one and do few upgrades.. it would still cost us a bomb.

Do you know where I can purchase cheap pre-built webservers direct? I can't seem to find any websites. There mostly £200+

Also I'm hoping to run windows platform (mainly due to near null experiance with Linux), what simple software can I install to get:

FTP
Webpages//PHP
DNS

running? (other than apache which still look's complex).

My main problem is where to buy a cheap server.

Setting Up An SSH Gateway Server For Techs
I've been battling with this issue for days now, and I'm sure the solution is simple, so hopefully someone can guide me.

Basically this is my server setup:

1) Tech Server

2) Server 1

3) Server 2

The tech server hosts the main company website, billing, etc. It is also used as the SSH gateway to get into the other servers. Server 1 and 2 host end user websites.

The tech server has an "id_dsa" key on it for the root user.

Server 1 and Server 2 have the public key in authorized_keys

I am able to access Server 1 and Server 2 from the tech server when logged in as "root". However - when signed in as a standard user (i.e. "nick") I am unable to use the id_dsa key to login to the remote servers.

I've tried setting the HostKey variable in the sshd_config file but that wasn't it. I also tried adding the "-i" command to my ssh command.

The only solution I found was to put the id_dsa file under each standard user account (i.e. copying it to /home/nick/.ssh) - however - that's not very secure.

In a nutshell - how do I get standard SSH users to be able to use the root id_dsa key without being able to view it

Setting Up A New Server For Small Data Transfers
I am an end-program computer engineering student. I have experience with programming languages such as C++, Java and various others but have very little experience with web based applications and hosting.

I am working on a project for my local chapter of Engineering regulators. Once a year, they hold a popsicle stick bridge building competition in different areas of the province and measure and record the maximum force that each bridge can withstand before breaking. I am tasked with measuring this data for each bridge and displaying it on a GUI.

There are approximately 5 of these competitions held in the same week, each in a different area of the province. I would like to bring the data recorded in each competition online so that the competitions can be linked together regardless of geographic location.

To do this I would need some very small scale web hosting. These competitions tak place only once a year and the amount of data sent to the server from each competition is minimal - approximately 5 entries per bridge (number, weight, max load, owner, age group) for about 200 bridges. Each competition would sample this data at regular intervals so that they can compare their top scores with those of different locations.

I have come here for some advice on the best way to set this up. I have considered the following options:

1. Purchasing server space online - This seems to come at too high a cost ($10/month is the minimum that I could find) and come with more space and speed than is required for this purpose.

2. Setting up my own server space online - This would require a dedicated PC running at all times for a long period of time (it will probably be 10-15 years before this system is redesigned). This system needs to be self maintaining as once I am off this project it will not have IT support.

3. Using the engineering regulators website space to host this data - They have a website already and I may be able to keep this data there, however, I am unsure about accessibility of this space. This database will have to be accessed by a Java or C++ based program as the GUI will be written in one of those languages, and I am note sure if this type of webspace supports the commands needed to access this information.

Domain Name Server (DNS) Redirection / Setting Up Zone(s)
I have a quick question about some DNS zones I'm trying to set up for a customer. I figured I would try asking the community before bugging our top-level admins (they have enough to do already, and I'd rather learn this myself).

We have a customer for whom we are managing their DNS. The site is actually hosted elsewhere, but the DNS originates on our server.

They have another site that is hosted with us, and they would like to set up a subdomain redirect from the remotely-hosted site to the site hosted on our hardware. So, the situation looks something like this:

example.com : hosted elsewhere (primary IP not ours), DNS with us
FooSite.example.com : redirect this to www.FooSite.com

I could edit httpd.conf, but it would be easiest (for firewall reasons at the moment) if I could enter in the proper zones via WHM zone editor. I'll be able to see the results either way. I tried setting up the 'A' and 'CNAME' records, and I got as far as directing the 'A' records for the subdomain to the local IP, but I'm not sure how to finish it off (assuming I'm going down the right path). My own knowledge level in this regard is somewhere between novice and intermediate (which is why I have partners and admins ).

Any Security Risks With Setting Up Server On Home Network
Any security risks with setting up server on home network? I would like to set up a computer running linux or xp as a computer on our home network. We have about 3 other computers on the same network.

My network manager says that it would be a security risk to the other computers on the network if I were to have the server running on the network. The server would be connected to a netgear wireless router and I would have ports 80 and 21 opened just for the internal ip address of the server. (for example, the server is on 192.168.0.3, and I had just the two ports open for it, while there were computers on 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.4).

The netgear router has a firewall built into it. Each of the other computers on the network have software firewalls. I would not have a firewall on the server, and I really don't care if someone hacks it. So, what at worst could happen? Would the other computers be at risk?

If you are a professional, I want your opinion also.

Setting A Server At Home + Adding Own DDOS Protection
intend to hire someone to setup a server at my house. I will communicate with my isp in order to get a permanent IP. The reason I am doing this is I get too frustrated beings ddos'ed and even gigenet proxyshield cannot help me becuase of DMCA and other things.

Once I will have my server up and runnings, do you think it is possible to setup a ddos protection software/hardware ? If it's possible, do you have recommendation/lead for me so I can start looking at ?

How Fast Can I Change My DNS Setting On The Name Server Pointing To My Hosted IP
speed(time) with which a DNS setting change to a different IP will show up on a query.

Also, what's the fastest way to do this?

Is there someone I can buy my own IP from?

Improve Performance- Web Server, SSH Server, And Mail Server
I've got a VPS which is serving as the main server for a number of sites. Web Server, SSH Server, and Mail Server.

What I've got running:

Apache2, PHP5, MySQL5, Dovecot, Postfix

One of the sites is a growing forum with a MASSIVE photo album. This is the site where I notice the most slowness.

Changing the server software is not an option - Only optimization.
