Setting Up A Server

Aug 7, 2007

I got a VPS, with Ubuntu server on it. I was wondering how i make it so that when it gets http requests, it shows a certain directory? I dont want to install a control panel, i want to learn to do everything manually, so that i can make the VPS show one domain only, with PHP and SQL and all that.

I can find out how to install PHP and SQL, but further than that,

FOr example. demonoid.com resolves to an IP. If you visit that ip directly, you get the site. How do i do that??

No control panel, nothing. ONly one domain.

Cpanel Domain Name Server (DNS) Setting For Email On 2 Seperate Server

Nov 7, 2009

This is the scenario, domain.com are setup on server1, however server2 also has the same profile of domain.com as we use ns3 and ns4 using domain.com. This works fine with the nameserver setup on server2.

However I encounter problems as the emails from server2 won't reach server1 as there are duplicate profile on server2.

My question is how do I setup the DNS in cpanel/whm from server2 so the emails from server2 will reach server1?

Server1 (www.domain.com)
ns1.domain.com
ns2.domain.com

Server2
ns3.domain.com
ns4.domain.com

Setting My Own Server

Mar 26, 2009

I am interested in setting up my own server, more than anything just for the experience. I would like it to be a linux-based server and to be managed purly through the command line [i.e. no GUI].

Can anyone point me towards any goods book/resources for learning this? From what I read I believe that sitepoints own book does not cover any command line stuff, and everything happens purly through the GUI.

Setting Up My Own Server At Home

Sep 30, 2009

So I have designed some software for my brother who owns a business and needed a website to manage his clients and send emails to them and stuff. Right now we are using Hostmonster, which has been pretty good so far.

He was talking to me how it would be nice to be able to email the website and have the site automatically store the information in these emails into a database for information regarding his clients, which I know is possible, but not on a shared host it seems. I have tested my own email receiving script on a test server on my computer and it works fine. So we are continually finding our limits with a shared host. We have been looking into dedicated hosting, but as you all know its quite a price jump to go from $7 a month to $200+.

I got thinking and remembered that my dad has always had a business web plan from our ISP at home (cause he likes fast internet), which according to there website serves 1Mbps upload speed. We also have 2-3 old computers sitting at home that we don't use anymore (2)2ghz pentium 4 Dells and a 3.0ghz+ Pentium 4 HP. I was thinking we could probably just plug one of those into the router, forward some ports and have our own server up and running. For now we would only host this software I made for my bro, which is used by only 4 people, and that's not even at the same time usually. So there is very little load to deal with. But in the future we may put a few other sites that we have in mind which would use PHP and MySQL quite a bit.

I was just curious what some of your opinions were on creating a home server. I was looking at Ubuntu Server edition as a possibility, or XAMPP since all my machines are Windows XP. One machine doesn't work cause the hard drive is out, so if I use that I would probably have to put Ubuntu on it. Any suggestions on good server software would be great! I believe the business web plan my dad has also comes with a static IP as well, so that will help. Look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Setting Up A SMTP Server

Feb 5, 2009

I'm setting up an invite and request email notification system for my website. Its pretty process heavy (since all the invites and requests will need to be sent right away), so I'm planning to setup another machine that is only designed to send the emails.

So I guess a SMTP server right?

I have no problems installing PHP and linking the user generated emails, but how does this work in regards to the domain name?

When the user imports his or her contacts on the main server (domainname.com) which then triggers the invite emails to be sent out with the SMTP server then how does that effect the clients' inboxes?

Since the website that they've registered to is www.domainname.com and the SMTP server domain name is smtp.domainname.com?

How does this all work?

What I worried about is the inbox seeing the emails as apart of a different domain name and then tossing it all to the junk box.

Setting Up An Exchange Server

Let me explain. I have a Blackberry and would like to setup a BES system such that I can get push email, calendar, and contacts for OTA syncing from my own personal.com

So, the question is, what sort of hosting package do I need to do this? And, will this cost a lot of money?

Again, I'm completely new to Windows hosting, so I'm not sure what I need and if it's even possible.

Setting Up An SSH Gateway Server For Techs

Jun 15, 2009

I've been battling with this issue for days now, and I'm sure the solution is simple, so hopefully someone can guide me.

Basically this is my server setup:

1) Tech Server

2) Server 1

3) Server 2

The tech server hosts the main company website, billing, etc. It is also used as the SSH gateway to get into the other servers. Server 1 and 2 host end user websites.

The tech server has an "id_dsa" key on it for the root user.

Server 1 and Server 2 have the public key in authorized_keys

I am able to access Server 1 and Server 2 from the tech server when logged in as "root". However - when signed in as a standard user (i.e. "nick") I am unable to use the id_dsa key to login to the remote servers.

I've tried setting the HostKey variable in the sshd_config file but that wasn't it. I also tried adding the "-i" command to my ssh command.

The only solution I found was to put the id_dsa file under each standard user account (i.e. copying it to /home/nick/.ssh) - however - that's not very secure.

In a nutshell - how do I get standard SSH users to be able to use the root id_dsa key without being able to view it
