I was wondering what kind of web hosting I need to have to build an online shopping cart site? Does a shared hosting package work? The site will need to process credit card transactions so it needs to be secured. I'd appreciate some recommendations.

Large VBulletin Site -- What Should I Look For In A Server Setup

Apr 17, 2009

I run a large adult vBulletin community with 70,000 members, 1/2 million posts, 186,000 attachments (a lot video), and closing in on 100 million downloads since our start some odd years ago. I've been battling keeping the site up for quite some time, and I am starting to wonder whether we shot too low on the server setup. I figure I would ask the pros here at WHT for some advice.

This is our current setup:

Site server:

Quote:

CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz
4 Gig ram
250 Gig sata harddrive
Unix FreeBSD 6.2
Apache

MySQL server:

Quote:

CPU: Pentium III/Pentium III Xeon/Celeron (2666.62-MHz 686-class CPU)
Cores per package: 4
4 Gig ram
750 Gig SATA harddrive
Unix FreeBSD 6.4
Apache

Do you think the site would perform better under one server and maybe a more powerful processor? What should I be looking at exactly as far as hardware goes for this type of site. I should note we push about 2.5TB of bandwidth monthly.

Now that I have learnt what I guess is enough to build a web site (including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and Photoshop), I need to know what are the steps to put a web site online. I need to know everything:

1- Purchasing a domain and what are the different possibilities.

2- All about Web Servers (Buying - Renting - different operating systems and platforms)

3- Mail Servers and other services.

4- Security issues that I need to worry about.

5- Any other things I need to consider.

Moving Large Site

Typically for small sites i am able to use server to server ftp to move files.

However, when moving large site like this, ftp might be disconnected and lost track of which files are not transferred.

How can i transfer/move the files (server to server) and resume if disconnected?

Managed VPS For Large Video Site

Oct 27, 2007

I'm currently building a large guitar lesson website that will launch around the end of the year or so. Basically there will be multiple instructors on the site who submit video files from 10mb to 20mb in size each. There will eventually be a couple thousand videos on the site, so around 30gb of disk space right there give or take. So I need plenty of disk space.

I'm on a shared hosting account right now with iPowerweb, and that of course won't do me much good once the site's up and running. Plus they have a 12mb upload limit, but the instructors need to upload videos larger than that. And I'm aware that with a VPS I'd be able to set my own upload file size limit.

Anyway, this server stuff gives me a headache and I feel totally clueless. I've always loved the basic shared account because I don't have to do anything to keep the server in tact. But from what I've read, a VPS or dedicated server would take a lot of work on my part. So for that reason, I'm guessing I would need a managed VPS or managed dedicated server. I don't totally know what "managed" means, but hopefully to where I wouldn't have to do any upkeep. I need to focus my time on a bazillion other things besides the server, so it'd be nice to find a plan where I wouldn't have to worry about server security updates, software updates, and any other server maintenance etc.

I need tons of bandwidth. It's going to be a membership site with hundreds and eventually thousands of members who all watch the lesson videos. So that's a ton of bandwidth. I'll be the only one on my server though, I'm not going to also host clients or anything.

I'll of course need super reliability. With eventually having thousands of members, my site needs to be totally professional with near flawless uptime.

So I'm thinking I'd want to start off with AT LEAST 40gb of disk space, but 60gb might be better. At least 1000gb transfer, but again, maybe more? And I guess a lot of ram, although I admit I hardly know what ram is haha, does that have to do with the speed of the site? And what's burstable ram? But yes, I'd need to have a server that can handle all the many files and users, with great uptime and great speed.

Budget-wise, I'd like to keep it under $70 or $80 a month if possible. If absolutely necessary, maybe a little more.

Anyway, if you guys were in my shoes, what would you do. Assuming you're clueless about VPS, and have the needs mentioned above. Any host recommendations or advice?

Price-wise and size-wise, Start Logic looks pretty good, but I think their VPSs are all unmanaged. Ive looked at a lot of other companies, but it's hard to find the right plan.

Online Graphics Hosting

Jan 9, 2007

I tried signing up for a few of those online image hosts. I would upload a few images, carefully read their instructions, and code my page to go get the pictures to show up on my webpages. I tried about four different ones. No matter what I did, following their instructions, looking in different browsers, checking file names etc, I always had trouble finding my pictures. Not just trouble--my images just never show up when I put them in these free online file places. Usually I am pretty sharp about stuff like this but now I have to wonder: What is going on with that?

SSL Email And SMTP Error - WHM/cPanel - Retail Host Certificate

Apr 16, 2007

We have a few users that use SSL email and we decided to purchase a cheap single-root SSL cert over at namecheap for the host name so that it would end the "self-signed cert" whining.

We got the cert installed and it works great for WHM/cPanel and also works for SSL over IMAP and POP3, but the very first email anyone sends (SMTP) per day gives this warning (Outlook Express):

The server you are connected to is using a security certificate that could not be verified.
A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider.

It seems obvious that the cert used by the SMTP system is not the new one we installed.

We used WHM's SSL/TLS -> Change Server Certificates link to install the cert.

We then made sure that:

/usr/share/ssl/certs/host.domain.com.crt
/usr/share/ssl/private/host.domain.com.key
/etc/exim.crt
/etc/exim.key

...all contained the current cert or key as appropriate.

Just for grins, we even made sure:
/usr/local/cpanel/etc/cpanel.pem
...had the correct pair.

We restarted all the mail services and even restarted the whole server. (I know...Windows reaction...bad tech.)

Does anyone know of a stealth location where the SSL cert for SMTP should be updated?

WHM 10.8.0 cPanel 10.9.0-R139

What Type Of Hosting For Online Clothing Website?

Mar 31, 2008

I'm starting a streetwear clothing company and am about to get a website done to display my catalogue - it will have medium amounts of flash and will be like most other e-commerce clothing stores

However, I won't be needing a full e-commerce site as I do not intend to sell through my website - if needed, all I hope to have on it is a link for payments to be made via paypal

What I will need is a host that is reliable and doesn't bug out as soon as traffic to my site increases - I have no idea as to the amount of traffic i will be receiving when things are just starting out but I'd like to at least be prepared for high traffic - I was stupid enough to believe in all the overselling from big hosting companies until I did more reading - now I know their limits are just for show and I want to avoid getting shut down or whatever for putting a load on their resources

My hope is that some of you learned ones can advise me on the direction i should be heading Though I have no idea exactly what VPS and dedicated servers are, I assume these are more suitable for my needs? Are big hosting companies more reliable when it comes to their package plans for VPS or dedicated servers?

Medium-end HA Cluster - Providers

Jul 2, 2008

I'm planning to upgrade my servers to a more "enterprise-class" installation and would like to hear your advice for good managed hosting providers for this.

Currently I use RackSpace which are great but pricey (leased servers); in the past we had a colocation with another provider: it was good cost-wise and generally proffesional but alas the provider's infrastructure was not sufficiently resilient to natural disasters and unlikely but occurring infrastructure accidents.

My feeling is to stay with a more managed service rather than try to colocate again: we need someone making sure the hardware stays around 24/7 and makes sure to have the appropriate spare parts and expertise in the hardware they sell us. We can handle the software parts.

I'll probably stay with RackSpace because they can and have already built stuff like the below. But maybe there's another provider out there which fullfills similar needs for customers.

My needs are:
1.5 TB of shared storage (i.e. SAN or NAS; must be reasonably fast (maybe 10MB/s sustained) and 99.99% up); add .5TB per year
4 application servers in various configuration (8-16G of RAM, quad or dual-quad Xeons)
2 database servers (With fast drives in RAID-10 but not much disk; most of our data is not in an SQL server)
Some appropriate load balancing appliance (with at least 99.99% reliability)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
Redundancy to a point (i.e. redundant mechnical parts, hot-swap drives)
Usual stuff: managed backup, private network, hardware monitoring with fast hardware exchange
No Linux system administration beyond a sane installation needed

99.99% uptime on the network and infrastructure (i.e. if an UPS blows up or a router goes down this should not affect me; redundant connections to multiple network providers etc. etc). RackSpace has a 100% network uptime guarantee and in the many years we've been with them in one form of another I haven't been disappointed in their competency on that front.

This would be in some US datacenter. Does someone have experience with such a scale installations with other providers (or RackSpace too) ?

(I wrote "SAN or NAS" because I'm not really yet sure if some NFS server or maybe shared storage via SAN and something like RedHat's GFS will be best for my needs; it would be nice if the provider was capable of advicing on things like that).

Hosting Large Flv Files

Oct 6, 2008

I have a customer who wants to sell access to videos of conferences he runs.

Each flv vid is approx 1 - 1 1/2 hors long approx 380MB each and there will be about 12 videos per conference.

approx 4 - 8 conferences per year.

My customer suggests 10 - 20 people will buy access to watch each video.

Access to watch the videos will be through a password protected webpage.

issue - the current site hosting company only allow uploads up to 150MB per file.

Can I host the flash videos elsewhere and deliver them through the password protected web page without anyone else being able to see them via server they are hosted on?

This would also reduce the bandwidth going through his current site server.

I am unsure of where to look, the sites I have seen are pretty small in scale as far as capacity.

Further, I would also like to be able to re-sell this, instead of just setting up a straight account.

Further if at all possible I would like to bundled with some other small hosting packages (wordpress sites) on a reselling basis.
