I have dedicated server and I have daily,weekly and monthly backups located in:
root: /backup/cpbackup (my secondary drive)
each account's backup locate in specific directory like:
the backup of account website1.com will be located in:
root: /backup/cpbackup/website1
all backups are not compressed file
So, How can I restore one or more backup?
A couple weeks ago, I encountered a big server crash on my VPS that caused me a lot of downtime. I'm currently trying to figure out a solution to keep a current "clone" of all of my server accounts on a second server. That way, if I ever encounter another crash, I'll be able to simply change DNS information to have all accounts "live" using the backup server.
I appreciate any input, advice, suggestions, criticism, etc. Here's what I have in mind...
1. I currently have all of my websites hosted on Server #1. (We'll call it that for the sake of avoiding confusion.)
2. I have an automatic nightly backup setup via cPanel / WHM that backs up all accounts from Server #1 to Server #2 via FTP. (Server #2 is in a totally different data center, with a different provider.)
3. The nightly backup packages all of the accounts as "cPanel Full Backups." So, they're compressed, and as such, they don't work as "live, functioning websites" on Server #2.
The only way to make them "live and functional" on Server #2 would be to use cPanel to "restore" the backups.
4. So, what I'd like to do is setup a CRON job that would automatically "Restore" the backups each morning on Server #2. That way, Server #2 would always have a functional version of all my accounts, that is less than a day old. Then, if Server #1 ever crashed, I'd just have to change DNS information to point to Server #2, and all of the websites would be live again, without having to physically restore all of the backups using cPanel.
I don't know a ton about CRON. However, as I understand it, CRON couldn't actually make cPanel restore the backups. However, I'm assuming that when you use cPanel's "Restore" function, it just goes through a series of processes. So, it seems logical to me that, if you knew what those processes were, you could write a CRON job to automate the process every morning.
Did that make sense?
If so, is it possible?
Do you guys have any input, criticism, etc?
If it's doable, can you make any suggestions that would help me make this happen?

I set up a FTP backup repository today however when attempting to restore selected objects from the backup there are a couple of messages that state:
"Restore the backup file despite a corrupted signature"
"You can select objects to restore only when you are restoring from backups that were created in Plesk 12.0 or later."
I noticed that the backup residing in the FTP repository has a .tar extension whilst the one I did in the server repository has a .xml extension.
Restoring selected objects from the server repository works fine.
Why is this not possible? I'd like to restore selected objects from the FTP repository. Otherwise I'll have to transfer the backup file from FTP repository to the server which is really inefficient.
Would like to know what are the dangers of backing up and restoring full entire system backups (with plesk installed) to another server with a different ip address? Will the restored plesk setup operate properly and offer an ip address change in the system, or will there be any pre-requisites required such as manual ip changing within the system core files?

How many would you guys recommend me? Currently I make backups on my own server and one at offsite. And what's the diffrence making backups trough ssh ot ftp? Because right now I work with ftp because I don't understand ssh.

What's the best way to go about backing up the data to this remote host?
Would you say WHM's backup system is sufficient?
I don't feel comfortable with one backup every 24 hours, so i'm wondering if there's anyway to reduce that to every 6 hours?
Or would you guys recommend RSync instead?

If it's set to backup the sites every 6 hours and only backs up when something changes (Files/databases)
If, god forbid, a site gets hacked, but isn't noticed and Rsync kicks in and backs up the hacked site, there'd be no way to go back to a previous backup, would there?

I don't want to pay to have my server managed just to be able to have automated backups, so what other solutions do I have? I need to colocate ½ rack to host my Backups, Bandwidth needed is 5 MB since I use Rsync at different hours, so I don’t need to push more than that.
I try to look for colocation services here in Colorado, but all companies quote me $50 to $70 for each server and $130 per MB.
I do not have a restore disk for my Toshiba laptop and there is a virus on it. Can I use my restore disk from my HP computer? Both use windows XP?
