Moodle VPS Catch-22
Going through [url] Installing_Moodle I came to see the thumb rule of 1GB RAM for 50 concurrent users. While I do not think it is mentioned for VPS, it may imply around 15 concurrent users for 256 MB RAM. A cheap shared hosting can handle that easily without moodle chat. I have heard that VPS is more powerful than typical shared hosting. But, if it is only powerful for the root access but not for handling larger users then it looks like a dilemma situation.

Crons Not Working In ONE Reseller Account
I have WHM 10.8.0 cPanel 10.9.0-R10737 Fedora i686 - WHM X v3.1.0 One of my resellers got a bunch of complaints this morning from her own customers that their crons have stopped running. She checked her own sites, and they're not running for her either. I double checked. They ARE running on the rest of the server. I have no complaints from anybody else on the server, they show from shell as running on the server, and crons are running in the site I'm working on to fix a broken script (in a different reseller account).

Db Migration
I am planning to move host of my friends to another server, its un-managed he asked me to restored db , as he is running an IPB FORUM, I thought I would use the vbulletin docs of backup and restore as I use these typically for most of the scripts and I never had a problem. these are the vb docs based on moving into new host and restoring: [url] [url] I have the code to do it, but the problem to understand is the following: when I am in totally new host, do I NEED to create new database either via ssh or control panel and give that name in the ssh code or ? do I need to give the old dbname that was used with previous host ? its too confusing for me, consider me as beginner @ database transfer on a new host and help me in detailed explanation. I have done restore on same server but never done for any one to restore on a different server

Migration To VM
I've been getting frustrated with my hosting provider, and after doing application development and sysadmin for a while now, I'm ready to have a go at doing it all myself on a VM. I plan on migrating my site to the new server and when everything is set up, pointing my domain to the new name servers... My question is - what's the best order to do things to minimize downtime? Can I set up email, MySQL, Apache, DNS etc before I have the domain pointing at the new server, while still being able to test adequately? Would I just set up the services and test them using the IP, then once I'm happy with everything, setup DNS, point domain at new nameservers, then change all configs to use the domain name rather than the IP? In theory if it email etc works with the IP, then the name server change shouldn't matter because it will resolve to the IP...

Migration Testing
I am migrating my website to Hostgator, and before I change the DNS entries, I want to make sure that everything displays properly. To do this, I have added an entry into my /etc/hosts file pointing the domain to the new host. If I then ping the domain, the reply comes from the correct IP address. However, if I try to view the website, it is still served by the old host. I thought it might be a caching issue, but I have checked with wireshark and using curl, and it is definitely connecting to the new IP address, but the server that is returning the pages is still the old one. I've contacted hostgator support, but when they make the changes to their hosts file, it loads correctly. Is this a local problem (my system), or something with their server configuration?

Unfortunately, migration from an Apache server is no possible. I find this hard to believe. Is there anyone who can confirm this before I buy a copy of Plesk, which according to SW Soft would not work with my current server... Also, if they are wrong, how should this be done? Plesk should be fairly straightforward, I'm a bit worried about the DNS. The DNS is managed by Plesk and will continue to be managed by Plesk, but again it's the IPs that I'm worried about. All of the hosting accounts on the current VPS use the nameserver "ns1.citedata.net" and "ns2.citedata.net" as well as their associated IP addresses. Although the nameserver domains will remain the same, their IPs will change.

Choopa Migration Gone Awry
It seems something has gone awry with choopa's recently planned migration. All but one of my servers returned to life, of course, the one that didnt is the database server that they all rely on. That server has been down going on 18 hours now, and of course no one answers the telephones, AIM, or support tickets. Of the one or two times that I've gotten through on the telephone, the tech has told me that they're putting hands on every machine that got migrated, and connecting a console. They also mentioned something about not sleeping for 24 hours. I think its time to make plans to move my equipment elsewhere... 18 hours of downtime for a 2 hour planned maintenance window seems a bit wonky to me. I forgot to mention, each time I had gotten someone on the phone / aim, they said they would immediately go check the server and see whats wrong, and none of them updated any of my tickets or got back to me.

Moving To Hostgator - Migration Steps
I've been with midphase/autica on a $10 reseller plan for several years, but I think it's time for a change. I have a personal site, and 2 small business websites. I think I'm just going to sign up for a shared hosting plan, as I really don't need the separate cpanel access for each domain. These are the migration steps as I understand them. Am I missing anything? 1. Sign up with hostgator 2. Set up main domain and 2 other domains. 3. FTP over all files and folders, including mail folders. 4. Set up email addresses with new host 5. Go to my registrar (namecheap) and change the name server from old to new (that hostgator gave me). Is that about it? Am I missing any critical steps? Mainly, I just don't want to miss any emails. According to the chat at hostgator, once I switch the name servers, the change should be instantaneous. True?

Gigenet: Post-migration Review
It's been close to a month since we've migrated away from our former provider to Gigenet, and after monitoring the activity and health of our new servers, I felt it was time to write a review. This isn't about bashing our old partners, the data center and our former managed hosting provider. I'm leaving names out of this, and I'll appreciate it if the couple people on WHT who know our old providers keep that info to themselves, because this is not about them; it's about Gigenet. Support Tickets/support is about as good a place as any to start. Our old setup had all management running through our managed hosting provider, and tickets were either closed unanswered, or we might wait days to get a response, which was too often less than helpful. Our setup now includes standard management through Gigenet, and we've contracted Rack911 to handle management of some very specialized services and security requirements we wouldn't expect Gigenet or any other data center-based management team anywhere to handle. That's another (very positive) review for another day. During the course of migrating (five servers during three weekends), we opened perhaps 10 tickets regarding server config, IPs, provisioning certain services, etc., and the longest we had to wait for any ticket to get answered was 9 minutes. In all but one case, the first response resolved the ticket - the remaining ticket did require more back-and-forth communication, which is to be expected. Even better, instead of hearing about everything that can't be done (something we'd come to expect from our previous provider), they focused on what could be done, and they did it. Things were handled properly and professionally every time. Best of all, I can actually call my admins or chat with them, sort out issues in minutes instead of days or months. Hardware Performance Despite how much happier we are with the response we're getting from our admins, this benefit pales in comparison to the performance increase we've seen since we moved. We have a single client who accounts for three of the five servers we're hosting right now. Again, I'm leaving names out, because this is not their endorsement of Gigenet - it's our endorsement. The performance boost we've seen since moving has been nothing less than astonishing. Of those three servers, let's consider the old Web server config: - Xeon Quad Core, one of the mid-2008 E series - 6GB RAM - Public 100MBPS connection - SATAII 250GB HD And now the new Web server: - Core i7 920 - 8GB RAM - Public 100MBPS connection - 10k Raptor 147GB x2, RAID1 So, it's a step up. Is it a significant step up? I'll leave that to hardware geeks to debate. But I don't think anyone can argue that the increase in hardware does not match the increase in performance when you look at these numbers: Old Web Server Typical Load: 2 - 5 High Traffic Load: Always 15+, often 40+, sometimes reaching 200+ and requiring a restart Typical Idle: 85% High Traffic Idle: 0%, and it could stay buried for 15-30 minutes at a time! New Web Server: Typical Load: .1 - .3 High Traffic Load: .5 - 1 (I've only seen it go above 1 twice) Typical Idle: 95-100% High Traffic Idle: 80-90% We have even more revealing numbers from when we did some post-migration stress testing. I won't get into details here (I might be doing a more thorough write-up about this in the future), but the general conclusion was that the new server could handle 6x the traffic of the old server and still serve pages faster than the old server did even with all traffic already routed off that server. I attribute this to three things (caveat: I'm not a hardware expert, and this is my best guess). 1) The hardware is a step up, and that will account for some performance boost. 2) Rack911 optimized this server from day one. 3) The components/build are simply higher quality. If you happen to know the client who uses these three servers, again, please keep this info to yourself, but try surfing their site now, and you tell me whether it's faster, like maybe 3-4x faster! They've been getting quite a few people complimenting them on their site's performance over the last few weeks. I'd like to take credit for that, but I can't. ---------- So there you have it - another satisfied customer of Gigenet (and Rack911). I hope over time my experience with them continues to be the same quality it is now. We're paying a bit more than we were before (for both hosting and administration), but we're getting so much more for our money!

Reseller / Cpanel Migration Failure
I have a really urgent problem. I signed up for a new WHM/CPanel reseller account, and want to transfer my sites from an existing reseller account (also WHM/CPanel) with a new (very well-known & positiviely-reviewed) provider. (I'm moving because the new host offers services my existing host doesn't.) Now, I have moved a reseller account from one WHM/CPanel host to another before without any issues. But this time - moving from my current host to the new account - it doesn't work. This is the error my *new* host got when transferring one of my clients' accounts: ********************************************* /scripts/restorepkg /home/migrate/backup-10.27.2009_06-42-18_abiaheno.tar.gz Using backup archive cPanel restorepkg 2 cPanel user: abiaheno Force Mode: no Reseller Privs Restore: yes Searching /home/migrate.... Is the archive missing (cwd: /home/migrate/cprestore loaded backup-10.27.2009_06-42-18_abiaheno/cp/abiaheno)? checked 6 files..... *************************************************************** They told me to ask my current host to fix whatever's wrong. I did so, and his response was, (paraphrasing) "I'll submit a bug report to CPanel, but it will take quite a while for us to get an answer, and we backup and restore websites every day so I don't think there's a problem." I'm very frustrated, and desperate to get this migration done. I've notified my own hosting clients that a move is imminent, and they are all holding off on updating their own sites until the migration is done. This was all supposed to be done yesterday, so I'm getting so anxious and think I'm losing credibility with my clients every moment. my question is, does anyone have experience with this type of issue, and what can cause the error mentioned above?

Migration Of Emails From Plesk 8.x To Cpanel 11.x
I´m gonna migrate my server with Plesk 8.4 to Cpanel 11.24 in the next days using a manual method (account transfer failed in my test, i guess it is not fully functional). Creation of accounts and migration of databases is already done, but i have some doubts with email account transfers: 1) Cpanel and Plesk, share the maildir format for messages. A transfer of email messages should be smooth, just copying the data of this directory´s. Plesk directory: /var/qmail/mailnames/domain.com/user/Maildir/ Cpanel directory: /home/domain/mail/domain.com/user Is it ok? 2) Is there any way of migrate usernames/passwords to cpanel without recreate accounts (with a new password) and copy the email messages?

HyperVM To Virtuozzo Migration Guide
So a few days ago we had the wonderful experience of migrating Virtual Private Servers from HyperVM to Virtuozzo. After spending endless hours attempting to migrate with vzmigrate, vzp2v and rsync we were getting very frustrated and were just about to give up. With this we decided to contact our datacenter SoftLayer who usually is able to help out. Like always they managed to rise to the challange and save the day providing us with a solution thay may not have been the best, but probably the only one. We must have searched the entire Internet looking for guides and after we found out a solution we knew it had to be posted so that the frustration we went through would never have to happen again. While this solution is a little timely and requires some work it actually isn't as bad as it sounds. Also we have created a little shell scripts that does a good amount of the migration for you. Below I have made step by step instructions so that there will no longer be "no answer" to this question. Also just to let you know we contacted Parallels and unfortunatly we were told that "I can not find anything in our knowledgebase". Basiclly useless support... they regurgiate their online knowledgebase to you. So below is the guide. Pre-Requisites: 1. Download the Migration Kit zip that includes the shell scripts for the migration. Migration Kit Download: [url] 2. You must create a new container in Virtuozzo for each HyperVM VPS that you would like to migrate. You MUST use the same VEID and I you need to keep the hostname the same. Also the OS TEMPLATE you pick DOES NOT MATTER! If you are copying a customer HyperVM template don't worry cause the OS Template has no effect as far as I know. We transfered 30+ VPS's and the OS TEMPLATE made no difference. 3. Stop the container you created and mount it. Code: # vzctl stop <VEID> #vzctl mount <VEID> For LIVE MIGRATION SKIP TO STEP 4b. 4a. Stop the VPS on the source server (HyperVM) and mount it. Code: # vzctl stop <VEID> #vzctl mount <VEID> 4b. Leaving the VPS running while migrating has a risk of posible database corruption. During our migration we did it this way and we experienced no issues so I think it is safe to say that in rare cases there may be problems but usually not. 5. Unzip the Migration Kit and be inside the folder where it was unziped. 6. Execute the shell script. Code: ./migrate.sh <IP-ADDRESS> IP-ADDRESS = the IP Address of the source VPS Node 7. Enter the CTID when the prompt requests it. (CTID = VEID) 8. Enter the root password for the server you are migrating from. 9. The script runs inside a screen session so to back out of it to do other things or start another migration you must hit: Code: CTRL + A + D To list all the screens you have open. Code: # screen -ls To enter a screen session Code: # screen -r SESS-ID SESS-ID = the numbers before the period listed when you list all the open screens. 10. Once the migration is completed a broadcast message will alert you. Also if you check /var/log/migrate/migrate.log will contain all the migrations that have completed. 11. Once a migration has completed you must unmount the VPS and start it. Code: # vzctl umount <VEID> # vzctl start <VEID> If everything went "ok" than your VPS should start up without issues and should be just like it was on the old server. Lastly I would like to give credit to SoftLayer for the method of migration. Thanks again SoftLayer

Server Migration...... Seeksadmin Support
I Foolishly entrusted a server migration to seeksadmin recently... however they seem unable to provide the required level of support to complete this task... Up to now the average response time per query is between 12 to 24 hours... amazing as we have paid for one hour response package. We have a small window of opportunity to complete a seemless migration tonight... but again seeksadmin are nowhere to be seen... We have coordinated with our datacentre and informed our customers that the move will take place tonight, however seeksadmin are either asleep or just can't be bothered to respond... which leaves us with no other option than to try and locate an alternative support company to assist with this migration... All accounts are copied... it is just a case of hardening the server and installing third party softwares, ensuring all data is up to date and addressing any issues which may arise... Can anyone suggest a tech/support company who can help out at short notice? Migration will start at CET 01:00 and needs to be completed during the night before my users come back online in the morning...

I have lost total of 3 months of hard work and there's no way for me for getting the files back. From their VPS plan "All VPSs include Future Protect which makes a backup every 6 hours." I did not get the recent backup instead of last February backup. This is outrageous and there's no sleep for me on tonight while I'm going to create all those missing files.

This is a personal favor for a friend, so I apologize for the lack of specific details. Long story short, he resells VPSs and needs to move hosts (again) as the one he is on turned crappy. Does that mean I have to lower the TTL for just the MX record or does the SOA's TTL take precedence over everything else and I have to modify both?

Smooth Migration From Mod_php To Suphp

There are hundreds of accounts on my different servers and I am worried about the transition. I know cpanel has a permission conversion script, but I dont completely trust it. The biggest issue to me though, is all the users that have php_values and flags in their htaccess files that would then be needed converted to php.ini's. Has anyone created a conversion script for doing this in an automated fashion? I might not even convert my full servers to this and just do with the partial ones (less than 25%), but I really think it would benefit the customers and myself with the nice added layer of protection of suphp.

Basic Windows Migration Info
We primarily work with unix servers and are new to the windows hosting. We have have a client with a large site moving from a shared account to a vps account on another host. The shared account is on a server run by a local company and any type of login could probably be gotten for that host. And the other is a VPS so essentially functioning like dedicated. Is there a way to transfer server to server instead of server to local to server? The equivalent of SSHing files from server to server on Unix?

Host Has Lost Important Files During Migration
I asked my host to migrate my account from a PHP4 to a PHP5 server which they did without question. During the transfer they have lost a folder containing every product image my site sells, over 1000 different items. I know I'm foolish not to have backed it up, but I didn't, I have all the photos but not after they're all been renamed and resized. Basically, so far today - 24hrs, I have only had 2 orders when I normally get 60-70 a day.
