I'm planning on moving from a shared hosting environment to a VPS. I've got 2 VPS hosts in mind (FutureHosting and Zone.net), all of them offer cpanel, Plesk, and DirectAdmin.
My question to everyone is which cpanel would be more useful to me? I've used cpanel in the past, but I would like to try something new. With the VPS, I do plan to host people's websites and I would like to create more websites for myself and manage them. I am leaning more towards DirectAdmin since it has an option for creating small user panels for people. What does everyone else think?
Also, how do you determine how much RAM you need? I obviously can't monitor my own RAM usage since I come from a shared hosting environment? How will I know if I need 256, 384 or even 512MB of RAM? Should I just start off with 256 and go from there?

I've taken a look at the SSL certificates offered by eNom and was wondering what you all thought would be the cheapest certificate that is suitable and ready for e-commerce that will process credit cards, etc.
Certainly the more expensive, I can assume is more feature and security laden, but just wanted to know what you all feel is a good balance of price, security and readiness for e-commerce.
Is a basic Cisco ASA 5505 suitable for a low-bandwidth colocation environment? I run a small virtualization network, going to be expanding to multiple hosts with a SAN and looking for something that is more secure and easier to manage.
Right now, I only have 12 virtual servers and I'm only pushing about 1-1.5mbps on average, though going to be expanding it so my capacity will be about 4x, including multiple physical servers and a layer2 switch. Sometimes managing it even now can become a PITA.
I would like to use an external firewall, but don't think I need something as hefty as an ASA 5510, as I doubt I'd max out the 5505 on throughput. I'm also sceptical about putting up a m0n0wall/pfSense box, as it might not be as cost effective to put it on new, reliable hardware, and putting it on some older/purchased off Ebay server could be unreliable as it is the entry point to my network.
Think the ASA 5505 would be a good entry level point?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have built a server so I can co-locate it to be used for shared hosting. The specification is high, compared to most dedicated server offerings, so I was considering splitting it up into different virtual machines for different purposes. The specification is: Intel Xeon 3230 (4x 2.66ghz), 8GB DDR ECC RAM, Seagate Cheetah SAS 15,000rpm (4x 147GB), Adaptec RAID 5405 (RAID 6 Array with Battery Backup), Dual on-board NIC, etc.
The original plan was to use this machine as just one linux server, but I am concerned most of its potential will not be exploited. So I am exploring the possibility of setting it up as 2 Virtual Machines, installing Linux on one and Windows on the other. This way I can offer hosting for ASP and ASP.NET, and possibly MS SQL and/or Exchange depending on costs for their licences.
What Microsoft licences are suitable for servers used for shared hosting? From what I can gather there are several ways of being licenced, but I can't figure out which is the most cost effective. It seems you buy the server OS edition that supports your requirements, then pay another licence per user (CAL?) - I haven't got a clue how many users I will need to have though. Then if you want to use MS SQL, DNS or Exchange you need the correct edition - and buy licences for these too.
Does anyone know roughly what I should be looking to pay for what? I would ideally like to have MS SQL, DNS and Exchange - but am aware that the licence could be so expensive that it wouldn't be worth doing.
Does anyone know of a hosting Linux package (must be UK based) that has the usuals (PHP, MySQL, subdomains, email, Apache ModRewrite) that is geared towards hosting lots of low bandwidth sites?
I use several great hosters but they limit the amount of addon domains or charge you through the roof for extra ones. I'm thinking a package that will let me do 15 - 25 domains. More would be a bonus. The bandwidth allowance is not a problem. A lot of my customers' sites use less than 100 MB a month.
I just applied yum updates and then attempted Plesk microupdates on a Mediatemple dv4 VPS running CentOS release 5.11.
I ran the 'up' alias (as I have done many times with success):

I have just made a personal website using photoshop, html, css and php. My site contains an index page, a gallery page with 8 photos, a contact page with a form and an extra page with some quotes. I am planning to use a paid host for the first time. Based on feedbacks from some of my sitepoint friends, I decided to go in for shared hosting. I thought of using Hostdogs.com as they have the option of a monthly billing cycle. I thought that I have the option of changing my host after a month if I am not happy with them. I have also read a lot about Hostgator.com. A lot of sitepoint members seem hooked to it.
1. Can anyone give an opinion as to which host I should go in for? Hostdogs also give a free domain. Is there any reason I should go in for Hostgator instead of Hostdogs?
2. One more question, I have heard that once I have a site running, I can earn money through the advertisements placed on it? How do I place advertisements on my site?
3. One last and very important question is whether it is right to go in for shared hosting at this point of time. I just read this

Now we have Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 and would like to get Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 to increase our system performance.
Also we have other choice, get Intel Xeon E5405 Harpertown 2.0GHz
to replace two above.
I think it is better to have one server box because one box easy to manage than two. Also Harpertown is much faster than these two together.
What is your opinion?
I currently have a dedicated server, which is hosting several websites. I'm happy with the service I'm getting, but I'm trying to save money. I'm paying $120/month for the dedicated server. Spending half of that each month would be great.
Right now, the websites are either static websites, or are simple database driven websites with not much traffic. My server load averages are pretty close to 0.01
I would think a VPS would be fine for my needs. However, I may have a site I will host in the future that is database driven and uses Ruby on Rails. It would probably have 10-20 users online at any given time, and maybe several hundred subscribers total.
Would a VPS still work in this instance, or should I stick with a dedicated machine?
We have 1 Gb/s channel. We want connect it to switch, than to two routers (first - main, and second - emergency, which will began work if first one dies).

View 14 Replies View RelatedI need a basic L3 switch for maybe 25 mbps that will do hopefully up to 50 VLANs and which will not require me to hire someone to configure it.
As much as I like Cisco, that rules them out.
The reason I'd like a Layer 3 switch is so that I can run my backups and inter-server transfers without adding to my bandwidth bill. Also, VLANS are a critical requirement as i have a lot of customers with root on their managed servers.
So i am looking at HP [gasp] switches. How "easy" is the web-based configuration widget? [I'm an advanced unix admin but networking is a mystery to me.]
This is a starter switch and once i have a full cab of servers I'll be able to spend $7K on a pair of 3560s and hire someone to configure them for me ... but until then what can i get to meet my requirements?
This week connectswitch's service has not been that good. Basically first they restart the node without prior notice and our vps was down for 7 hours. and now we buy our cPanel license via them and they havent paid it so the license is now expired although we have paid them for it.

which switches to buy as there are a myriad of options out there and I'm quite frankly a bit lost.
After reading through a bunch of posts here as well it looks like most people are leaning towards the Cisco Catalyst or HP ProCurve lines.
My requirements are:
- min. 24 Ports (4 SFP ports) 10/100/1000
- Layer 3 routing
- Low latency is more important than high throughput
- Switches will handle a lot of UDP multicasting, thus adequate buffers are important to minimize packet loss due to overflowing buffers
- Budget is ~$2k/switch
What is the purpose of making the switch. If i were to get "unlimited/umetered" shared hosting with cpanel, how is that different then getting a vps with cpanel?
Other then getting large amounts of traffic, what is the purpose?

We have a small hosting company (currently 24 racks) that we are expanding to hold 100 racks. We have several 3640 series routers behind a 7200 series router (our edge router) that feed into numerous 2950 switches and 515 & 525 pix firewalls then into the racks with customer supplied switches within the rack. I want to replace all the 3640 and 2950 switches with a 6500 series switch. The only routing we do within the 3640's is subnet routing to the switches which make up individual networks for each customer. My goal is to use the 6500 switch to limit bandwidth for each port feeding a customer and to eliminate all but the 7200 router and the 2950 switches. Does anyone know of a reason or reasons this would not work or if it's just a bad idea. Looking for pro's and con's,
View 2 Replies View RelatedDoes anyone know of a fairly low cost dual power supply Ethernet switch. Nothing fancy is needed, just a simple 12-24 port switch that has redundant power features.
Our router and four little servers all have dual power supplies. Two big UPS units in a redundant setup would work great for us. The only weak link in the setup is the switch.
I just bought 2 Gbit dedicated bandwidth for me, and my customers. This is the switch the DC gave me. I know it is a 24 port switch, that can handle up to 4 Gbit of bandwidth. And that you can give each port its own dedicated bandwidth.
But this is my question. Off this switch can I give metered bandwidth? Like 2000 GB Bandwidth?
Also how would I offer unmeterd bandwidth? Like hook up a cheap Linksys up to it and limit the bandwidth to the port that the Linksys is in?
