I've been asked to update a local shops website and set them up with a new commerce site. I'm Looking for linux hosting around $10-$20 a month.
This might be a funny request but I want to be able to create my own username with whatever hostI go with.
Personally I use 1and1 for my own sites and its decent but I seriously hate how my username for ssh and ftp accounts are something like u334423423 or if I try to create a new username it is u334423423-newuser
I have a use for multiple FTP accounts on my server for different graphic design projects and clients. I would like to give my clients each their own account to upload files too and download from. I have noticed currently I am forced to use usernames such as "username@domain_name.com" on FTP accounts. I would like to avoid this so I can have accounts set-up as below.
ftp server: ftp.domainname.com (<--- would use this domain exclusively for FTP only, no hosting or email) user: usermame password: password
I know cPanel says you must use the domain name in the username when the server is hosting multiple accounts, however if I rent another server exclusively for FTP can this be avoided? I have personally used many FTP sites where the domain name is NOT included when accessing the account. This is exactly what I want. Any ideas on how I go about doing this?
I'm unresting noticing lately in 'top' that there're users represented as numbers using 'php' without any increase in server's load or connection flooding ..
I get 'rootkithunter' reporting similar number-users too
PHP Code:
/usr/bin/find: //home/virtfs/mohamy/proc/12873/task: No such file or directory /usr/bin/find: //home/virtfs/mohamy/proc/16870/task: No such file or directory /usr/bin/find: //proc/16873/task: No such file or directory /usr/bin/find: //proc/16875/task: No such file or directory
to keep credit card information on one of my sites for a few days to process orders offline. Once ordered, I would like to blank out the credit card numbers. What would the SQL code be to change all credit card information in the table `orders` field `cc_numbers` to `11111111111111111` be?
I see on the HostGator sign up page they are including a 100 minute toll free number, with additional minutes bein 4.9 cents... this is with the Business plan. That is downright visionary product synergy in my opinion... ol Brent has done laid down some VISION spankins!

Click on the little question mark for more detail... strangely, there is NO discussion that I can find of it in their own forums, so I posted it there as well, in the public pre-sales section, so anyone interested should probably keep an eye on both spots for maybe some official info droppage... I'd definitely like to know more about how it will operate and whatnot. Very interesting. I know I DEFINITELY have some good uses. I want to take live calls on a show, fer one.
I've run into a wall trying to run apache with multiple websites allowing users to use FTPd to manage files.
I'm running FreeBSD 7.1 on Apache 2.2.x
The issue is that Apache runs as www:www but FTPd writes the files as username:client. When performing some scripts that edit back-end files, this obviously can cause errors.
The data for each directory is stored in /home/username/www
I looked into some apache directives I could use. I tried putting User and Group directives into the vhost configuration for each vhost, but that did not work. I even found the perchild module and it looked like it can do the job but was a bit scared and turned off by the fact that it states it is beta at the top of the page. (I cannot link to it because I do not have enough posts.)
I've got 25 domains on a Virtuozzo/Plesk8.6/CentOS5 VPS. Each domain has one up-to-date install of WordPress, most have very little traffic (average 200mb per month), maybe 2 domains get 5-7gb traffic per month.
I monitor port 80 connections and rarely see more than 10 at a time. That should in my opinion be no problem at all for a VPS with 768mb guaranteed ram and 2.4ghz cpu. I've got 30gb hard drive spare too.
But.... about 8 or 10 times a day it grinds to a complete halt: server load at 500-1000%, sites timing out, plesk takes 3mins to load, often I can't even connect with SSH, and the plesk web server, apache
80 seconds sounds like a huge amount of time for a MySQL insert to me! Does anyone know if this is likely to be the cause of my trouble? Some problem with Plesk and the database? Or could it be something else?
I am developping a cart for a few clients and credit card numbers need to be stored in the database.
I was wondering if it was acceptable to let the client decides if he wants to encrypt or not cc numbers. There are several advantages/disadvatanges for both sides, like the key management issues and lost keys. Some persons argue that if access to your db is well secured encryption is not needed.
I thought I knew enough about my .htaccess stuff to do this, but I can't seem to work it out. What I want to do is if a user visits domain.com/folder, we check to see if the folder exists. If so, show as normal (IE domain.com/support)
If a user visits domain.com/dynamicusername (dynamicusername is not a physical folder), redirect to dynamicusername.domain.com
when I find the subscription from the admin side of PPA, if I select "Login as user" I've noticed that it is different from actually logging in as the user - for example - "add domain alias" is missing when I login as a customer - but not as an admin... I need my customers to add their own aliases and manage them - how do I add that feature to the client login side?
I'm configuring a website for a client who has moved their web hosting to downtownhost, but is keeping their email hosting with their current provider. They do not want to configure an MX entry on DTH to autoforward email back to their current provider because they don't want their email to pass through DTH.
In order to do this, do I keep the nameserver entries on the current provider the same, and configure an http redirect to point to DTH? Or is there something else I should configure on the current provider?
I was with Blue Host and their support and service was pretty bad. Servers going down all the time, and chat support was terrible. Then I moved to Host Monster and received the same kind of service/support. I later then figured out that Blue Host and Host Monster is runned by the same people. For example, I opened up a tech support ticket with Host Monster and then they replied signing their signature with Blue Host. So I got the same service: terrible tech support and servers kept going down. Now I'm looking for a new web hosting. I a few people here gave Host Gator some good reviews. I hope Host Gator is not run be the same people that runs Blue Host and Host Monster.
with this being my first website goddady's website tonight or there blog site plan seem pretty good as I do not know how to build a professional looking website nor do I have a knowledge of HTML. Are there other hosts that offer better services such as these?
Also I would want to register with 1&1 as to register privately is free but with godaddy it costs around $15 and I've heard of godaddy stealing persons domains when they haven't even expired yet i.e. familyAlbum.com?
Is it allowed for instance to register my domain name with 1&1 and host my site with godaddy?
If you had to chose either Host Gator or Hawk Host which would you go with and why? Don't bring any other hosts into consideration just compare these two. This would be for a standard website, forum, and a few downloads if it makes a difference...nothing too fancy.
I have just made a personal website using photoshop, html, css and php. My site contains an index page, a gallery page with 8 photos, a contact page with a form and an extra page with some quotes. I am planning to use a paid host for the first time. Based on feedbacks from some of my sitepoint friends, I decided to go in for shared hosting. I thought of using Hostdogs.com as they have the option of a monthly billing cycle. I thought that I have the option of changing my host after a month if I am not happy with them. I have also read a lot about Hostgator.com. A lot of sitepoint members seem hooked to it.
1. Can anyone give an opinion as to which host I should go in for? Hostdogs also give a free domain. Is there any reason I should go in for Hostgator instead of Hostdogs?
2. One more question, I have heard that once I have a site running, I can earn money through the advertisements placed on it? How do I place advertisements on my site?
3. One last and very important question is whether it is right to go in for shared hosting at this point of time. I just read this
Quote:
When you look for a suitable host, be sure to check out the amount of bandwidth that will be available to your site. Even a site that doesn't require a great deal of data transfer per month could run slowly if you're hosted on a shared server; particularly if you are on the same server as a more popular or bandwidth-intensive site. The more sites hosted on a server, the more likely they are to compete with each other for available resources, including bandwidth. This is why you may notice a reduction in server response times during busy periods, or during a sudden peak in traffic at a busier site on a server that you share.
This made me wonder whether I should go in for shared hosting. But then mine is a personal home page which may not have so much of traffic.
4. What does the paragraph below mean? How does one handle ones registration manually?
Self-Management (no cost) Select this option if you prefer to handle your registration manually.Your web host can establish service with any Top-Level Domain (TLD), international or domestic.
I will be setting up a site which uses ASP.NET 1.1. I know versions 3.0/3.5 are available, but they are not yet V2.0 compliant. Anyway thst is not the issue - just context.
Would like your advice as to whether it would be better to host this site with a company who looks as though they are specialising in ASP; such as DiscountASP, or Softsyhosting, or go with a general Windows hoster such as Steadfast, Fluidhosting, or 3Essentials?
I know nothing about ASP, so I don't know whether it is not at all neccessary to have a host specifically knowledgable about it, as I am unlikely to ever have problems with it, OR; I will most certainly have to address ASP issues sometime, so it would be essential to have support who really knows ASP.
use "nobody" is using 2much cpu on my server ... can someone explain me how is this possible ?
[url]
I already have checked
"Prevent the user "nobody" from sending out mail to remote addresses (PHP and CGI scripts generally run as nobody if you are not using PHPSuexec and Suexec respectively.)"
I am currently looking for a new IP KVM. Right now I use a mix of HP and Raritan KVMs and I'm honestly not super happy with either of them. The main feature I'm looking for is the ability to setup multiple users and only allow them to access certain ports/devices on the KVM.
What would be the best IP KVM to look at for this?
I basically have a script that uses passthru when people login with FTP so it can connect users from multiple interfaces.
Thing is, it uses the default php.ini file so, to get this script to work I have to enable passthru in the default php.ini file, affecting all users with an account. I am currently running SuExec and can change the php.ini file each user uses from httpd.conf. But as far as I am aware the FTP user isn't in httpd.conf.
What user does FTP run under and how can I use a custom php.ini file just for the FTP daemon. Also, as a side note, what are the effects of passthru and can it be used for malicious intent if wanted?
I have webmin and virtualmin running on my server, but it's set up to create usernames in the form name@domain.tld.
Is it possible to create an alias, say myname that points to myname@mydomain.tld, so that I am able to have certain users to login via SSH using a shorter name?
