My (soon to be ex) isp had email outage for over 3 days, I lost emails which means losing business and I don't want to be in this situation ever again.
I know that stuff happens and machines do go down etc. but I need to know how if possible a decent isp would be able to work around this, should they have a standby server, could they intercept/redirect incoming emails even though the account was down.
I'm not very technical but these are the questions I need to ask any prospective isp's
We are curently implementing a bulk emailing service,a ConstantContact type of service, that will be offering to our hosting customers. We are debating whether to use our own servers, or outsource this to a company that deals specifically with bulk email delivery.
View 0 Replies View RelatedFor one of my server based on cpanel i want to disable all email services/ send/receive etc. How do i go about it ?
Would Main >> Service Configuration >> Service Manager be the best place and disable the following services :
antirelayd
POP before SMTP daemon
exim
SMTP Server
imap
IMAP Server
pop
POP3 Server
spamd
SpamAssasin Server (if you choose to disable this, you should disable SpamAssasin in tweak settings as well)
Would that be enough to stop any emails from going out of server? Say via any contact form or any other way?
Please advice or i need to do it mannually via ssh and disable them.
I have SIM installed, so would i need to configure or remove something out of it too?
Our mail queue is getting stuffed with emails because remote hosts cant find our hostname.....
Should we change the hostname? Should we change the main IP? Submit a ticket with the DC? (This'll be faster, thats a last min option)
hostname: piper.bluepipes.net
IP: 208.53.131.149 (i think)
I have completed email set up on my server and have checked that email ports are open, but for some reason outlook keeps returning : "Outlook cannot find the server. Verify the server information is entered correctly in the Account Settings, and that you DNS settings in the Network pane of System Preferences are correct."
The odd thing is that outlook still picks up emails if I receive any, but keeps returning above error every minute.
Anybody have any comments about Hosting Metro's services?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI bought a hosting package from Yahoo Small Business India.
Initially i was happy because the package was cheap and had good features. Database was easily set up I installed php admin tool also with one click install. No other packages are available. One has to manually upload and install.
I tried to upload phpbb but i wasn't able to upload some files. I emailed them and asked why the server gives an error while uploading .htaccess files, the reply was we don't support it. I uploaded it without .htaccess and installed it. I installed wordpess and wanted to have clean URLs but yahoo does not support mod rewrite. I don’t know much about php and databases.
9th July 2008: While I was learning I modified some tables due to which my database administrator permissions were lost. I was able to login using phpadmin but unable to create new databases and modify previously created databases and tables. I emailed customer care regarding the problem and got a useless reply on 10th July that I should change the password of the database administrator.
I changed the password but the problem was not resolved. On 11th I again emailed the problem in detail with screenshots to the customer care. On 12th, I got a reply “we have forwarded this issue to the technical team and we will inform you once this issue is resolved.”
On 12th I emailed to ask when the problem will be resolved but got no reply from them. Till date (15th July) the problem is not resolved. No one even wants to reply to emails.

When i log in using phpadmin and try to see any tables i get the message. Access denied. Moreover, I also cannot create any new tables. I have NOT modified the yroot user;. Can it be recovered.

My email to yahoo customer care on 10th July:
Dear Sir,
Thanks for your reply. I have already done that from database administrator link but the problem is not resolved. This problem has started since yesterday because of my mistake. I modified the original database administrator "user name" from the database "mysql". After modification all my permissions have lost. I have not modified the yroot user. So can you grant the administrator permissions to new user The problem is that after logging in using phpadmin i don't have permission to create a new database. The databases and tables that I created earlier are also not available to me. I am also attaching the screenshot (.gif) of what error i am getting. When i click any database in phpadmin i get the following message:
SQL query:
SHOW TABLE STATUS FROM `wpress` ;
MySQL said:#1044 - Access denied for user to database 'wpress'
If there is no solution then please reset the database, so that MySQL database can be set up again.
Regards,
(Vinay Chhabra)

If you want good customer support then do not buy any package from Yahoo.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a managed dedicated server in England, but I have no idea about the quality of services I get from the person that does the management of my server.
Unfortunately I do not have the technical knowledge to evaluate it by myself. The server looks fast but I am not sure whether it is optimised for security, protection from spammers, etc.
Is there a way to find out if everything has been setup in the best possible way? Can this be done without giving access to the server?
I shifted my website universalteacher.com from yahoo to Medialayer in July 2008 because yahoo has a very bad customer support. You can read my review about yahoo here:

The support provided by medialayer is excellent. Whenever I contact them, they reply within 1 hour. Mostly I have got reply within 15 minutes. The executives are knowledgeable and very helpful.
I am located in India and Medialayer is in US. I always contact them in odd hours. Please see the following query that I asked when I was testing wordpress MU on one of my sites at 6:13 AM and i got the reply at 6:26 AM. The second query i asked at 12:40 PM and got reply at 12:48 PM ....
I've had a VPS from vpsland.com for a while now, but for the past week the services I've recieved are absolutely abysmal.
My server just went *off* - no clue, no trace. Then after repeated requests the server comes online, and just BARELY. All my websites, and the control panel (plesk) are offline. In fact even the virtuozzo control panel (on port 4643) is offline.
No credit, no apologies, nothing. Quite ridiculous.
I'll be shifting elsewhere. Any suggestions? I need a VPS around $50 a month - excellent services necessary.
Currently I am hosting my web site myself on my PC at home (Jboss+ mysql). Using a dedicated server with the highest spec can cost me a fortune knowing that I've just started my online recruitment business.
Should I just hire good hosting services to do things more professionally or should I keep hosting myself and learn how avoid many downtimes
hosting company that will allow me to expand as much as I like in terms of RAM, Storage and Bandwidth without having to move from a dedicated server to another dedicated server each time.
I guess the answer is something like Amazons Web Services (AWS). However, I haven't heard great things about them, but I wanted to know what everyone thought of them and any other similar cloud services that is more affordable and reliable.
I own a semi-popular downloads website which I host on one server while the actual files/downloads are hosted on another server. This downloads server is very low-end ( AMD Sempron 3000, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB HD, CentOS with lighttpd, no control panel, etc.) and is connected via a 100Mbit shared line with a 3300GB bandwidth limit. Originally, I had it on a 10Mbit dedicated unmetered line but I hoped that by upgrading to the 100Mbit, I'd get better burst speeds, faster transfers/downloads, and a bit more bandwidth in general. Well, this doesn't seem to be the case so I'm looking for a new server or file hosting service hopefully on a better and faster network.
Right now, I'm considering the following companies/services:
* Profithost.net - Decent Dedicated server with nice bandwidth
* Redhostservers.com - OK Dedicated server with awesome bandwidth
* Server4you.com - Great Dedicated server with good bandwidth
* File-services.com - Decently priced pure file hosting with OK features
* MegaUpload Business account with Hotlink Quota - Decently priced pure file hosting with nice features
If I go to Hosting Services - Domains and try to switch page, i get this error:
plesk TypeError: item.owner Name is null undefined
And beyond that point, no domains are displayed in Domains...

find a hosting provider which will meet the following requirements
1. Multiple sites (more than 6)
2. MS SQL Server 2005 or 2008 (two will be enough may need 500Mb on one)
3. More than one FTP user
4. ASP.NET 2.0 and 3.5 Support
5. PHP support also needed
6. $10 monthly (120$/Year) maximum
Supporting more than 2 sub domains on each domain will be an added advantage
What are the most important things to look for in a hosting company?
Cost?
Network Speed?
Uptime?
Quality hardware?
Quality Support?
Fast Support?
Redundancy?
Most people would say all of above right? Well, if you had to stack each of the above in order of importance, where would you put cost at? Is it at the top for you or at the bottom? If I had to rate each of them it would look something like this:
Uptime
Network Speed and reliability
Redundancy of power, bandwidth, cooling
Reputable Tier 1 carriers of bandwidth
Quality Support
Fast Support
Quality hardware
Cost
The problem is that I see many people on WHT acting like Cost if the #1 factor in determining a host. And when you let cost be your #1 determining factor, you will be usually sacrificing on some or all of the other factors that you should be looking at. The higher up the list you put cost in deciding where to host, the more you will sacrifice quality in these other important areas.
"But", you say, "I see many quality companies offering cheap pricing. Shouldn't I choose to go with them?" Consider this, hosting companies like any other business need to be able to make a profit. Sale prices are great but there are reasons for sale prices and you need to consider these reasons when choosing to buy a cheap server. Some common reasons for selling servers for extremely cheap are;
- The hardware is used and old and the hosting company is just looking get something for it. ANYTHING!
- They have an excess of inventory for one reason or another that they need to get rid of.
- They buy their servers used on Ebay and can therefore afford to sell them cheap.
- The cheap server is merely a loss leader used to bring business in order to sell other products and services at full price but is not a regular price that you can expect from this company.
- The company is new and is looking to attract prospective clients on price alone and is dropping the price just to get their client base increased quickly.
There are companies selling servers on WHT who fall into each of these categories so you need to think about this when you make a decision for who to go with. The common denominator with the above list is simple... It is Unsustainable! Not one of the reasons listed above can be sustained for a long period of time.
If you can get a good deal on a server with a solid company, and there are many on WHT that are great companies who have great deals on servers at times, then that is wonderful. But do not expect that you will be able to get insanely cheap pricing on a regular basis from this company and don't be surprised when you want another server if the price is significantly higher. Every hosting company has certain costs that are unavoidable:
- Rent
- Power
- Bandwidth
- Payroll
- Employee Benefits
- Server Hardware Costs
- Software Licensing
- Marketing and Advertising
- Maintenance Contracts
- Network Equipment
- Infrastructure Replacement (a/c's, generators, UPS units, etc.)
- Other Utilities
The point in bringing all of this up is that if you plan on finding a hosting company that you can stay with for the long haul, you need to look at their regular pricing for retail servers and for reselling servers. Cheap prices are great, but no business can stay in business if they only offer cheap pricing. And if a hosting company is only attracting you by their cheap pricing, then it shows that they are most likely weak when it comes to the other essential factors mentioned above that need to be considered. Any hosting company selling servers for under $80 per month for instance is loosing money in some way. Eventually, the price will be raised to cover those costs (like at LT this year) and then you are left to make up that difference.
As with most things in life, good quality cannot be sold cheap, and that which is cheap is usually not good quality.
find a none overselling hosting company
unlimited?No!I don't need the "unlimited".
like the bluehost,dreamhost etc.
I'm just looking for a normal hosting company...
budget is under $10/month.
I'm wondering if someone can recommend a host to me. I know that researching a host before I go with it is important, this is part of my research.
I would like to make a site with ASP.NET 2.0 and a database (MS SQL preferred).
I'm just starting, so I don't have any traffic, but I don't want to rule out the possibility in the future.
I'd like a host that has no lock-in (Does not own my domain name, lets me backup and download my own database files) to a host that scales (allows me to upgrade plans easily, or purchase add-on space and bandwidth), although both are useful, I really don't want to be locked-in.
The site is not for profit (personal) and budget is a concern.
Right now Lunarpages Windows plan is looking good, it does give me a ‘free domain’, but specifies that they do not own it. Does anyone know how easy it is to transfer a free domain from lunarpages to godaddy or another registry? Has anyone had experience with this host for asp.net?
I'm also interested in finding a unbiased, legitimate host searching site that allows me to search hosts by features, with no affiliate links to the hosts reviewed, that do not sell hosting, etc.
I would like to find out all sites hosted by [url]. Is there an easy way to do that?
