For the last week or two my VPS keeps getting added to blacklists.
Yesterday I noticed that a website on the server was forward mail from a contact form to the clients AOL account, obviously scripts were completing the form on the website and that was being sent to AOL, who would of obviously blacklisted the IP.
I've stopped that now, but we're still getting black listed. I've had my VPS provider get exim to record the path that sent the e-mail, and there are no scripts on the server sending out mails that I should be worried about.
Some questions to help me.
How can you identify an outgoing e-mail? is it by the character '=>'? If so, is it normal for there to be e-mails being sent out: 2007-08-23 19:04:10 1IOH2K-00038j-Jg => /dev/null <shaun[at]sr8.co.uk> F=<aaron_straubegnvu[at]yahoo.com> R=central_filter T=**bypassed** S=0 QT=6s DT=0s 2007-08-23 19:04:10 1IOH2K-00038j-Jg Completed QT=6s
I'm puzzled as to why the server keeps being blacklisted, when I can't really see any problems in the log file?
The CBL website (which blacklisted us) says we were added at around 19:00GMT, so I've checked the logs for that time and can't really find much.
On the server there is one account with an autoresponder set as that person is away on holiday.
I had a client ask me earlier if there was any downsides to having his main site be SSL only ,not his billing his actual site.
For exmaple it would be https://www.yoursite.com rather than the normal http and having that redirect to the https.
Obviously he would need all his images being linked to https in order for it to be secure but apart from that, I couldn't think of any of the top of my head, I was wondering what you guys all thought.
I just uploaded a wordpress site and it already used up 300mb ram. The site receives very little traffic so I doubt the traffic is the cause of the ram usage. Is this normal? my control panel is webmin
Does that look normal to you? Because I read somewhere that you should allow no more then 30 connections per IP. But most are taking much more then that.
We've just started to use a VPS, and so far no problems I've been looking at the resources and they seem a little high considering it's pretty much out of the box, and I've only setup 4 sites which aren't even public yet. The only thing I've changed is the php.ini to increase the memory limit to 32mb. My main concern is that these sites don't suffer when they go live.
In the Plesk control panel the memory says: 3.8 GB of 3.8 GB used; 47.1 MB available The 47.1mb is pretty much average, although I've seen it go as low as 115mb.
In Virtuozzo the system usage (resource: capacity) is usually around 60-75%
Both of these seem a little high, but I'm not sure if these readings are for the whole physical server, or just my portion of it.
Also in the (Virtuozzo) QoS alerts I've had quite a few Yellow zone, black zone and one red zone reports, at around 5am - quite possibly the quietest time on a server which isn't hosting any live sites yet. These have both been on the numproc and the privvmpages services (the red zone was one the privvmpages). Is there anything I should be looking at or is this fairly normal operation for a VPS? I have nightly backups scheduled for around 1am. These were originally set for 4am, but reports were showing that they were running out of memory, so I’ve now staggered the times of these to see if that helps. I've haven't changed anything resource-wise other than the php, so I thought it would be good to go from the start, but maybe it needs some fine tuning.
I am running asp.net on my 1and1 "shared" hosting account. I just was told I could not add a simple .mp3 player control because it requires "higher" security. I only have "medium" security. They could only suggest a dedicated server.
Is this going to be normal amongst all asp.net hosting companies? Are most asp controls at the higher security level?
Is there a hosting company that gives this to you as a shared customer?
I recently got a VPS from VPSLand before reading all the negative reviews... Everything seems to work fine EXCEPT disk operations. Sometimes it seems writing big files to disk, or moving/copying files around on the server will completely lock it up.
I opened up PerfMon and with my IIS/mySQL services stopped (which means my system is running absolutely nothing), the disk queue and disk % values are ridiculous. See:
www|europeinruins|com/temp/disk-noiis-nomysql.JPG (can't post URL's so switch the | with .
I'm not sure if the trafic showed by munin graphics is normal or not because it seems it jumps to 2mbps in the morning and after few hours drops down to .5mbps
I don't host any storage websites, which should have lots of uploads, just normal websites, maybe a total of 10000 unique visitors/day on all accounts (I estimate this as I don't know how to find out exactly the number of visitors on all websites hosted on this server - 182 accounts)
My question is how can I see what exactly is making that trafic, maybe using a netstat command to see what processes are using the bandwidth.
I currently have a VPS host that, for the past 45 days or so, has delivered an average of 66% uptime. The best results are 75% and the worst are 50%. I'm still waiting for an official response from the company so I'm not including any names. But I do have sites at Dreamhost and Hostgator and they're reporting 99% and 100% respectively.
Is it normal for VPS hosts to have lower uptime? Or is this just the result of a bad server or cluster?
Note: I have about 10 sites on the VPS host and all report the same results. Dreamhost has about 3 sites and Hostgator has 1.
My server is running slow, and some process are using high % of CUP.
Please take a look at the screenshot, and also tell me if it's normal to have : /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -DSSL running as nobody and root, and what is this command ?
I have a server with Core2Duo E6600 CPU, 4 gigs of RAM and 2x250 GB HDD's. What is the "normal" load average I can expect having ~50 websites running on it with medium visits. My current load averages (and most of the time ones) are: load average: 0.24, 0.13, 0.16
I have an dedicated server 2 x Xeon CPU 3.20GHz (2GB RAM), now 30 minutes ago my admin tryed to make a benchmark test on it and after a period the server was not responding ( SSH or http.. ftp ) we asked DN to reboot the server. After the reboot in Service Status page (WHM) there ware many services down and the load was ~ 45.00 (4 cpus) .. after aprox. 5 - 10 minutes the load has droped:
Server Load 2.61 (4 cpus)
is it normal to have such a higher load 45.00 (4 cpus) after an reboot ? The memory used was 32%.
Normally on our slowest day of the week, RAM usage is around 20%-25%. We see RAM usage increase as more users hit the site, thus, RAM usage historically, has been tied to public bandwidth. Recently, RAM usage has been hitting 32%-35% on our slowest day of the week (as indicated by bandwidth usage). I am guessing that something is keeping apache threads opened and/or a cron-driven process which invokes httpd isn't finishing for whatever reason. This is only my guess after some research and looking at whm reporting and top. With my limited server knowledge, these are only my guesses.
1. What could be causing this increase RAM usage?
2. How do we find out what is causing it?
3. We did recently installed the OpenX ad server but there are no ads being served, we just implemented the CRON job for testing purposes. Maybe this could be the cause but how do we tell?
Sitemeter is telling me the site gets an average of 38000 page views a day.
The web host is telling us we're using 51gb of bandwidth a day on average.
This is not a video site, or a download site. This is an article site, with jpg images. Our biggest page has about 2.4 meg of images on it. The average page is about 1.34 mb's, counting the navigation images which repeat on every page.
I currently have a Signature VPS with Servint and although I have found their customer service good and am getting concerned about my VPS's reliability. This is the only VPS I have experience with.
At the beginning of the year I was experiencing downtime at least once every couple of weeks and for at least 20 mins each time. Sometimes my VPS was down for over an hour. Most of the time the explanantion I received was a "Kernal Panic". Then for the last month and a half things have been good with no downtime, until today when my VPS went down again for about 50 mins.
So here I am asking what is normal downtime?
Is the downtime I am experiencing the norm and would I get the same reliability from any provider?
Would a dedicated server tend to be more reliable than a VPS?
I am considering moving to a dedicated server at LiquidWeb, not because I need the resources but I am wondering if reliability would improve. I am willing to pay for reliability! Any advice as to whether this would be a good move?

I just recently started monitoring my dedicated server using Top -- previously I used WHM server status -- and noticed that occasionally a "usb-storage" command was being run in SSH under root user. Is that normal?
I've recently purchased a VPS 250P package from EuroVPS and actually signed up for a two year contract as I respect the company so much however the speeds I've got, since finishing optimising the server, surprise me.
I'm already using a VPS from another dutch company until I move everything over to EuroVPS but the difference in speeds are a little concerning to me.
Please can you guys look at these response times and tell me if they are normal?
Current VPS: Page created in 0.035 seconds with 11 queries.
EuroVPS: Page created in 0.199 seconds with 8 queries.
Both servers are using the same spec, optimisations and PHP cache however my current VPS is using Apache1/PHP5/MySQL5 and with EuroVPS I can't afford to get them to upgrade to version5 so it's running on Apache2/PHP4/MySQL4.
I did get this response from EuroVPS, does it explain the difference in times?
"...we are using enterprise kernels which are slower than standard SMP/UP kernels. The performance of our VPS instances is not as high as some competitors who are using these faster, but smaller kernels.".
Once again, I have the utmost respect for EuroVPS and love their support but would appreciate some opinions on this from you guys.
Hi over the last week ive been having numerous problems with hosting accounts on 2 different servers which has lead me to think that my 'security' is not 'secure' and a malicious user is at play. im in the uk on broadband on a private connection to the internet - no-one else should be sharing this connection. This is the traceroute from my connection at home to the server ive had the most problems with - is this normal?
a certain host I've been with for over 6 months now experiences what I would consider always very high server load. The server load is normally around 4-6ish, rarely below that. A few times a day it spikes to around 12ish, sometimes even more. The server has 4 cpus. Is this just some really big time overselling? They had downtime once for 2 days when a server crashed, and after that the server load has been really high, when before that it was normally around 1-2, and in the 0.50s
I reserved a private server on a company n I supposed to have 10GB of space, I recived it with about 2.4GB space used, I thought it's the system files, is that correct or the files shall be deleted?
I recently got a dedi from Hivelocity, and they installed CSF/LFD. On my previous hosts, I didn't have this, just cPHulk. With this dedi, I'm receiving nearly a dozen daily emails from LFD with IPs that have been blocked for multiple failed logins, mostly with username root, but also sales, staff, admin, system, etc., and a few for port scanning.
Is this normal? I've already disabled direct root login via SSH, and I'm not really worried about anyone actually managing to gain access, I'm just curious about the high number of attempts. On previous hosts, where I actually had active sites and forums, with links posted on other forums that are indexed and nicely ranked by Google, I rarely received any emails from cPBrute at all.
