I am looking to add 2 servers running debian and suse. We want to use it for a pilot A-Z voip termination project. Do we have any recommeneded colo's in NY or east coast USA with top nothc bandwidth for VoIP (L3). We currently have our servers in McLean, VA and Philadelphia on Level 3 providing USA and Canada SIP termination and the quality is excellent. We need similar at a lower cost.
I am looking to setup a voip CLEC business (basic voip services only). I already have a softswitch class 5 running on dedicated server in a Data center.
But unfortunately, that data center would not allow T1s connection to ILEC.
My questions are:
1. what is the best top 3 data centers that can offer dedicated voice servers and cross connect to ILEC in NJ-PA-NY area?
2. Any recommendations of certain services/experts that I can consult them about this kind of project and/or may assist in doing the paperwork associated with all filing requirements, ILEC negotiations, etc..?
3. Any resources for direct information that can help me with understanding this business, help in setting up this kind of service and run it etc..?
I've always had to use a bandwidth mix. I recently got offered a great deal on a full rack/cabinet with 30 Mbps of Level3 and Qwest bandwidth in the Chicago area and am thinking about moving my dedicated servers to colo.
I would appreciate your opinions and assistance with these questions.
What is considered a good deal for a full rack, power, and 30 Mbps of Level 3/Qwest bandwidth in the Chicago area? Assuming that it's in a nice and secure datacenter.
Is Level 3 still considered a top bandwidth provider these days?
How good is it compared (in terms of network quality, latency, etc.) to providers like Abovenet, Mzima, and Internap?
Lastly, how does Qwest bandwidth rate among the other carriers?
I was wondering what kind of rates I can get for Level3/WilTel (the old WilTel "cheap" bandwidth, if they still sell that as a separate product) in St. Louis on a 500Mbps commit. Looking for this bandwidth at either 900 Walnut or 210 N Tucker (Bandwidth Exchange Buildings).
I am working on finding a colo provider in Los Angeles that can meet these requirements:
* Full Cabinet
* 2x20A 220v Power
* Bandwidth either 1Gbps full burstable or 1Gbps dedicated (with plans to move up to 2-3Gbps within a year)
* Available ASAP
The sites that it will be hosting are sales and informational for a consumer product that sporadically gets news or magazine coverage which massively spikes its traffic. These times are when a good chunk of the revenue comes in but we do not necessarily know when they are coming. Does anyone know if having a full burstable line will cover this sort of eventuality or should we grab the entire dedicated line just to ensure we have it waiting? We would be providing all of our own firewalls and equipment, we just need the bandwidth, preferably without having to deal with a router on our side.
Price isn't the biggest consideration; reliability, stability, security, and performance are.
As an additional question, we are looking at a Catalyst 4507R-E switch for the core of our network, with redundant supervisors (for the purposes of ensuring we have no single points of failure). Any one have experience with this switch that can say whether it's a good choice or not for that?
Considering skipping VPS and going to a colo setup for a handful of sites. Nothing major, so the server will be very entry level, but with redundancy in mind (software RAID1 and 2 nics). But I have a few basic questions:
How good is hot swapping in Linux? This was very hard to me to find out online. I am getting a 1U rack with a hot swap backplane and 2 SATA drives. I won't be using any commercial software with my setup.
How does redundant NIC work? This is new to me and am wondering how this is setup.
I think I can shop around NYC for a 1U slot for around $40 a month. I don't need a lot of transfer, but would like a decent pipe. The thought of 1Mbit sounds unattractive (transfer is around 100KBytes/s, right?). How much would 10Mbit cost? I found some quotes but they seem way too much (I could be wrong).
Is a basic Cisco ASA 5505 suitable for a low-bandwidth colocation environment? I run a small virtualization network, going to be expanding to multiple hosts with a SAN and looking for something that is more secure and easier to manage.
Right now, I only have 12 virtual servers and I'm only pushing about 1-1.5mbps on average, though going to be expanding it so my capacity will be about 4x, including multiple physical servers and a layer2 switch. Sometimes managing it even now can become a PITA.
I would like to use an external firewall, but don't think I need something as hefty as an ASA 5510, as I doubt I'd max out the 5505 on throughput. I'm also sceptical about putting up a m0n0wall/pfSense box, as it might not be as cost effective to put it on new, reliable hardware, and putting it on some older/purchased off Ebay server could be unreliable as it is the entry point to my network.
Think the ASA 5505 would be a good entry level point?
whenever one of my customers tries to install an application from the application installer, they get an error that looks like this.

Hi,We are a VoIP company. We need two dedicated servers in UK for VoIP applications, Which datacenter have best ping reply time or best route from UK to UAE and UK to Pakistan? bandwidth usage can be go up to 30 Mbps at peak timings. monthly bandwidth usage will be aroung 2500 GB. Please guide us reliable datacenter which can offer reasonable price.
I currently have a dialup isp. We use a couple of wholesale dialup service providers to provide service to our users across the nation. I would like to provide my own dialup services across the nation if the cost is justible.
Here is what I want to do:
1. Buy a remote access server (RAS) with hundreds of modems in it. The RAS will have multiple T1/PRI/T3 interface cards in it depending on which one I get.
2.Place the RAS in a Houston, TX datacenter.
3. Get voice services from a carrier that can deliever multiple T1/PRI lines (or a T3). I would want a local DID or phone number in hundredes of locations across the nation. When a number is called, it would be rerouted back to the Houston, TX PRI/T1/T3 connections WITHOUT ANY LONG DISTANCE CHARGES.
Is this possible without paying an arm and a leg for it? Can anyone give me any recommendations besides stay with a wholesale dialup provider.
I have a VPS and i have a VoIP phone that i use (i use it alot) i was putting credit into my account then i thought why cant i install my own VoIP Server. I started searching and came up with some software but now iam stuck.
What i realy like to do is have a VoIP server installed on my VPS
how would i do this?
What is the best software to use?
Do you have to pay for the software?
Is there somesort of webapplication so i can easily configure the software?
Can you make calls to other VoIP servers and Home Landlines?
If I visit my own public IP address, it won't show Apache from the computer running it. If I visit the private IP (http://192.168.1.102/) I can see it fine.
If I enter the private IP of the computer it is on, I can connect to it through internet explorer on a different computer in the network. When I visit my public IP, I get "page cannot be displayed".
Setup:
Modem (bridged) cable goes into VOIP box. Cable from VOIP box goes into router. Cables from router go into computers on network.
The IP address of my router is currently 192.168.1.1 The private IP of the computer running Apache is 192.168.1.102 I have forwarded port 80 (the apache port) on my router
Here are screenshots of my VOIP box (linksys) and router (dlink) admin pages: ....
I'm looking for datacenters in Europe and Asia. My application is primarily going to be VoIP (95%). Connecting to Telcos via SIP in North America (mainly USA, so connectivity should be good) to terminate calls in North America, and later into UK and Japan, China, Australia and Singapore.
Please give me the difference. Colo in carrier hotel, we can choose our preferred network provider, but should we do that if we cannot have our own tech in datacenter? How about the supporting service from carrier hotel? Just general question, cause I dont address exactly which facility.
And the second would be more expensive? Saying the same number of rack, amount of bandwidth... Who is providing IP addresses then?
We are looking for co-location in all big cities of Canada. To start with we are looking for Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary. The space required is 1U to 2U. Monthly bandwidth consumption will be around 5MB or slightly more. The Gateway will be connected with PRI's coming from telco. We'll take care of Telco.
I've written an application that acts as a game server for a simple game I'm creating. From what my friends tell me you can't run an exe on a webhost. They did however tell me that you can run java apps on a host that gives ssh access.
I want to monitor my application to make sure it is 24x7 uptime, if there is anything interrupt, I will be notified by email/SMS right away. There are several web monitoring service, but they all monitor ports, not application. I have bad experience, like, althoguh the web server is alive, but the application is already dead.
So, I want to monitor application instead of monitor a port. Anybody knows where I may find this kind of service?
One of our customers have a Web Application with Framework 2.0, but many times a day the Application just stop working, if you try to open any file into the application it never answered. We need to restart the Application for solve the problem.
Is posible to know why the application stop working, where can i the logs or something?
We need a good (best?) network/hardware monitoring application for monitoring our servers located at 3 different datacenters and around 50 servers.. I've founded some programs but they don't cover my needs 100%
Basicly I need these;
- Adding servers easily.
- Adding monitoring channel for each servers. (load, network, disk/ram usage etc..)
- Adding users and attaching users to servers seperately. (For example I will add justify user and attach him to server1, will add wht user and attach him the server2 and their permissions will be different and they will have no control on other's servers.)
- Web based controller for users/admins
- I want to install it to my windows/linux servers and monitor all remotely..
I'm currently running some .NET 2.0 apps on a W2003 standard server but am in the process of ordering another server and not sure if I can get by with just a Windows web or Small Business server edition for the OS (because W2003 standard is so ridiculously expensive).
I need to run:
IIS & ASP.NET PHP MySQL
And
VB.NET applications Some 3rd party applications (Mailbee etc.). Email (POP3)
I don't have any clients accessing the server (all users hit the web app) although I do have about 10 or so POP3 accounts. Other than that I just use remote access or LogMeIn for administration.
When I try and run a Rails application, I got this error:

This is my first post here and this sub-forum seems to be adequate for my question. If it is not, I apologize in advance.
I want to create a web application for an upcoming project of mine that has the potential to attract a large number of people. So the web application needs to be fast and secure at the same time.
I used PHP for minor projects for some time now, and although it is really efficient for quick web development, it _appears_ to me like a house of cards waiting to collapse. If you know how to use it properly, it can be acceptable, but there are still numerous security exploits in PHP itself that have surfaced over the last decade. Additionally, it tends to be quite slow and has a lot of bugs that aren't really security related, but can make your life hard. I've run test scripts (that I optimized for web deployment) on my own computer, and even on my own computer which is way faster (in terms of CPU speed, number of cores, RAM, and so on) than most servers, it runs slow--without any database access! And I honestly don't buy the "your server will spend most time in your database anyway, so don't worry about that" statements. I've tested it with databases that have millions of rows in them, and coded a test script that accesses the table and then calculates stuff from that and outputs it. If I comment out the database access the time needed to execute the script is only marginally reduced. I observed the same in my other projects. I also used Python and the problem seems to be the same.
Now, before the PHP/Python fanboy crowd yells at me: "Google uses Python and Wikipedia uses PHP, too". Yes, I know. But they have a lot of money to throw at the problem and can easily add new hardware if needed (Wikipedia alone has collected over 6m USD in the last year from donations). And a Wikipedia staff member I talked to some while ago told me that it's a miracle that Wikipedia is still running given that it is written in PHP with all its security problems (not my words).
So I thought: why not use a compiled language?
The obvious advantages would be that it is faster, and that I can leave out all the junk that is not needed in my case, thereby decreasing the chance of badly written code running in memory.
I have coded in C and C++ for a long time, including security-critical applications. So I absolutely know how hard it can be to write really secure applications, but I think it is also fair to say that I know how to minimize the risk of buffer overflows, validate user input properly, and so on. I often force myself to review my code some time later, in order to spot coding mistakes that you just won't see the first time. Additionally, I've created a neat string library around the standard library that makes string manipulation as easy as in PHP or Python.
So I continued my thinking: why not use C/C++ for your web applications and 'somehow' interface them with your web server?
And that's the problem--the 'somehow interface'. I don't know what to use that won't be deprecated in like 5-10 years from now. CGI seems to be quite okay, but I heard there's a huge overhead due to loading the executable into memory each time a user requests a page. FastCGI seems to be a better solution, but is not as widely supported.
My question is: What interface should I use if I want my web apps to be compiled? CGI, FastCGI, what else? The interface needs to be supported into the far future, it needs to be efficient and fast. And there's also one more important factor: time. Coding the application itself is an acceptable time loss, but if I can only run the app on a dedicated server and have to manage the whole server myself, this can become quite cumbersome. I'd really like to use a solution that can be run on a managed server.
