Ping Doesnt Work Until Remote Desktop Connection Is Made

Nov 14, 2007

I have a remote XP PC: 172.16.1.5 OpenVPN connection with route added for 192.168.2.0/24 to go via the VPN

Now on the other end the network consists of:

I have a OpenVPN server inside the lan on 192.168.2.245
Its default gateway is 192.168.2.1

I have 3 Windows Servers, 192.168.2.246, 247 and 248. All gateways are set to 192.168.2.1.

I have a ethernet router on the network, 192.168.2.1, it has a route added for 192.168.0.0/16 to go via 192.168.2.245, and route added for 172.16.0.0/24 to go via 192.168.2.245 also). the 192.168.0.0/16 is incase any other LANs are connected at a later date, if computers saw any packets not on the the 192.168.2.x subnet they would be routed to the default gateway which would then pass them to the OpenVPN router.

The trouble is, i can remotely connect and ping to the OpenVPN router fine and also the ethernet router, however when i ping any of the Windows boxes it times out. But i can open up Remote Desktop and connect to the windows box without problem, infact if i am running 'ping 192.168.2.246 -t' it will suddenly come alive but only after the RDP connection is made.

Is this something funny with the routing? I want to keep the OpenVPN server internal to the network and i appreciate it is hitting the ethernet router then being passed to the OpenVPN but something is weird as it fires up RDP fine but not ping. No firewalls are enabled on any of the boxes. If i log into ssh on the OpenVPN router or ethernet router i can ping from that to the windows boxes fine.

Its as if a ICMP redirect is issued, and all is well after the 1st connection. Not too sure but could anyone be kind enough to enlighten me?

Controlling Website Without Computer

Mar 29, 2009

I was just wondering if there is a way to control your website (that is, uploading, editing and so on) when you do not have access to your own "home-computer". You do have access to other computers and the internet, but these computers do not have your local root folder of course.

So is there a way to control your website, let's say, when you are on vacation.

FTP Clients Are Not Working On My Computer

Jun 26, 2009

I have been using Vista 32-bit with FileZilla for 2-years on this computer. I haven't made any recent changes to my system, but suddently NO FTP clients work.

I tried FileZilla and FireFTP (firefox extension). Neither can connect. FileZilla just gives a timeout error. FireFTP has been "connecting" for 5-minutes. No success.

I tried to bypass my Linksys router and go directly through my cable model. They still do not work.

I *CAN* connect to an FTP site using telnet command.

Starting To Look At Multi-computer / Rack Hosting

Sep 28, 2008

We are currently in a limited Alpha for a very demanding web application. We'll (hopefully) be in closed Beta in 3 months and go live / open beta after all issues are fixed.

Our problem is that we know that we will need, even for the open beta, a costly setup.

We are talking about 2 front-end servers for Apache / PHP / Memcached, 2 for a Mysql Cluster / replication / partitioned (undecided) and at least 1 just for pre-processing stuff that later will go to the database.

Growing from those requirements is very possible, so we would like to be able to add new computers to the cluster, more processing machines, more front-ends, a load balancer, etc.

Of course we have considered the Cloud (Amazon S3 and stuff), but those 5 initial machines are a must for us.

My question is, what is the best solution here, a rack with a private Lan/fast switches?

What are the recommended companies for this kind of installations? Will they manage everything or just rent the rack?

Any clues about how costly (setup and monthly) this kind of setup would be? I can't find specific prices for these "special installations" anywhere, they all want us to call and we are just preparing for 4/6 months on the road.

Windows Program To Display Big WARNING If Computer IP Is Not As Expected

Apr 17, 2009

I have some customers who use a VPN to connect to the internet securely. (They live in a restricted country.)

So when they connect to the VPN, it gives them a new IP, and when they go to "whatismyip.com" it shows the IP of the VPN server, as expected.

The problem is that sometimes their IP changes back to their local ISP without any indication. The VPN still appears to work (green lights are displayed in the VPN icon in the sytem tray), but their IP is now the local ISP providers, which means they are not fully "protected" any more.

And that is bad.

So, what I'm thinking is to find a Windows program or script or something that runs every x minutes.. and checks to see what is the current IP. If it isn't as expected (the VPN server's IP), then a big red warning window would start flashing on the screen, so they can then reboot or restart the VPN.

Does anyone know of such a program?

(BTW - they are using openVPN, latest version. And yes -- it works properly 99% of the time.. but for some reason the IP just changes back to local ISP for no apparent reason. The log does not show any errors or helpful indicators.)

Mysterious Computer Slowdown (windows 2003 Server)

Feb 15, 2008

I have a Windows 2003 Server I use as a regular computer.

It would occasionally slow down to a crawl and programs become unresponsive. The hard drive light is usually on when this happens, and it usually lasts like a minute or two, then things are back to normal again.

Sometimes I'm lucky and get to open up task manager to try and see what's causing this. However every time the CPU load is low, and memory usage is normal.

How can I figure out what is causing this, or how to get rid of it?

SSH Login Works From Another Linux Terminal, And Always Fails From My Windows Computer

Jul 31, 2009

1) If I'm logged into my {other VPS} with Putty, then
ssh root@67.xx.xx.xxx
successfully logs me into {new VPS}, after the password prompt, so I know the root password can login (some of the time)

2) ...but not my Windows computer, both Putty, and SFTP fail.
The SFTP error message is :
"ERROR:> [7/31/2009 9:48:08 AM] Can't connect to 67.xx.xx.xxx:22. SFTP21 error = #0."
Port 22 is correct, according to hosting support.

3a) Hosting support said...
"Based on the information you have provided to us, I am assuming that either your firewall or ISP is blocking the standard 22 SSH port. If you would like, we can change this to a custom port number."

3b) That response doesn't help, since I'm using port 22 for the {other VPS}
