Computer Parts Distribuitors In Orange, CA? (to Build 1U Servers)
Jun 25, 2008
can you tell me of a few distribuitors/wholesale to get parts from for building a few 1U servers. I would like to find Supermicro cases/motherboards but if they are general computer parts I guess they work.
I know INGRAM Micro has a program to get discount or something, but haven't researched much about it.

I signed up with Orangewebhosting.net a couple of months ago and as of today morning - my server is down, there is no support response and the mail I wrote to support@orangewebhosting.net bounced!
Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:
support@orangewbehosting.net
Technical details of permanent failure:
PERM_FAILURE: DNS Error: Domain name not found
I was wondering if anyone else has the same issue - is there an issue with them or was this a complete scam and I got taken in? They had / have good cheap dedicated servers for $35 / month which is why i jumped at it but this outage is ridiculous!

I know this is like comparing apples to oranges but I've never been on a VPS.
So am wondering, given the following plans, which would you choose?
I mean, for $5 more, you get VPS, more bandwidth, more space.
A2 Hosting Core VPS (128mb) Hosting - $15/mth
A Small Orange Medium Shared Hosting - $10/mth
Assuming 2 wordpress blogs with 1000 uv/day.

How did A Small Orange get the name? Years ago Tim Dorr, owner/operator, used it as his AYM screen name. There's a great interview with him from 2005 here. Even have a look around if you want.
"A Small Orange" is an Atlanta based web hosting company with a great attitude. It began as my backup host for my web based voiceover site and now it is my main host. I first read about them on this forum where they came highly recommended. When I first joined they would only accept 25 new accounts a night to ensure the best customer experience.
It took me two nights to get mine and I'm still there. Don't worry, they haven't done that in years and you can sign up any time.
The first thing I check when selecting a new host are their forums. A Small Orange (ASO) has a very active one that has "support" members who post, and even Tim himself. "Pre-sales Questions" is a popular area.
Not that this takes the place of a superb tech support who won't quit until the problem is solved. I've found them to be very patient with folks who may not be the most tech savvy. That would be me. There is a thorough Knowledge base online as well as an ASO Wiki written by staff and customers. Plus, step by step demonstrations of CPanel functions. The only issue I've ever had happened a couple of weeks ago. I had a problem with a disappearing sub domain. It was a CPanel code problem. Tech support was nothing short of amazing.
Their plans are very reasonable. All have the same features. Even their "Tiny plan" with 75 MB of space and 3GB Bandwidth at $25 a year has all the features of their most expensive "Super plan" with 4500MB of space and 100GB Bandwidth. Turn any account (except Tiny) into a Reseller account for $5 more a month. You can easily upgrade or downgrade as needed. Plus there's ASO Extreme which is just for file sharing. No scripts, e-mail or Cpanel. But, you get 1500MB of space and 100GB Bandwidth for $20 a month.
As far as up time, I don't think my site has ever been down for longer than a few minutes. The time I caught it they were doing some server maintenance. I'm always on my site since one of my web pages is my browser start page. I've hosted two sites with them, one for me and one for a local band. They were on different servers and both had the same great performance and reliability. ASO's business concept is to not overload shared servers. Period. I can go online any time and check my hosts status from a web site and CPanel. If there's any problem it's corrected quickly.
ASO offers CPanel and the latest updates and features. I like to check my stats often and use a lot of subdomains. Latest Visitors and AWStats helps me keep tabs of things. It has everything you'd expect from CPanel.
Believe me, I'm no expert. But, I do recognize a friendly attitude and willingness to help when I see it. The most important thing is that my web site up and online. If it didn't work well and consistently, I wouldn't be there. If that ever changes you can bet I'll be the first to leave. So far I am very impressed with A Small Orange.

i plan to buy some used 1750 and 1850 Dell servers and 2 new 1950. I need spare parts: I know i have to get Power Supply, Motherboard, headsink, and others (cdrom, floppy) from DEll, but what about hard drives, rams, cpu's? Can I get these things from outside companies such as buying the same technical specs SCSI harddrive from Seagate (which is generally cheaper) to replace failed harddrives in these Dell's? what about Rams (given same tech specs)? Will they fit!
i know building servers with SuperMicro case and server mobo, we can get generic parts. maybe we can go this route, but we need to know from those who have worked with Dells.

I am building a server using two Clovertown E5320 processors for a project. I need some suggestions for a motherboard and memory. I have looked at some boards on Newegg, but I'm still unsure. I do not have a large budget for the motherboard, so the cheaper, the better.
If anyone has other processors they would go with alternatively I'm open to suggestions there as well. It was either going to be a single Clovertown (later to be two) or two AMD Opteron 2212's....

Wondering what kind of storage hardware server builders are using to keep organized? I am currently storing HDD, RAM, PSU, CPUs, and other various parts on shelves and it gets disorganized and messy very quick.
I found this product for HDD and may order some to help organize HDDs:

Anyone know of similar products or good shevling / cabinets that are computer parts friendly?

I have short-listed the hosting services I initially liked down to the following:
1. FatCow
2. An Hosting
3. Host Excellence
4. Netfirms
5. StableHost
6. A Small Orange
Which of them would be most suitable for me. I am about to start a small online business: two websites and a couple of blogs.
I am after proven reliability, 24/7 support, no down time and many resources (which most do anyway).

I host about 30 sites for clients who don't want to manage their own hosting. All of the sites are low-traffic. Almost all use FrogCMS or Wordpress /w minify and cacheing options. All of my clients use Google Apps for email.
I guess I'm looking for a reasonable host (nothing unlimited) more storage than ASO would be nice - I'm looking from something from $10-20 monthly and I can purchase for a year at a time.
Sharkspace, downtown host and host gator seem a little "dreamhost-like"... but have good reviews.
Also, I'm in Montreal so a datacenter on the east-coast would be nice

I got a good deal on the Supermicro SC822T-R550LPB case, and then bought a Tyan Motherboard(S3970).
Unfortunately, the IO shield that comes w/the board does not fit the case, and the one from the case does not fit the mboard. A set of FAN cables do not reach the mboard either. Does anyone know of any place that sells these parts?

I am trying to set up a reverse proxy to the application Surveillance Station on my Synology NAS. Altough the reverse proxy works ok for other apps like Webadmin, Download Station and such, parts of the Surveillance Station app do not work, particulary the Live View & Time Line.
From the logs, I suspect an authorisation problem (because of the 401), but I'm not sure. I have tried ProxyPreserveHost on, ProxyVia full, and some rewrite rules, but I'm not sure what I'm doing Direct access to the port of the app works (i.e. 83.xxx.x.xxx:9900), so i know it has something to do with the reverse proxy.

I was just wondering if there is a way to control your website (that is, uploading, editing and so on) when you do not have access to your own "home-computer". You do have access to other computers and the internet, but these computers do not have your local root folder of course.
So is there a way to control your website, let's say, when you are on vacation.

I have been using Vista 32-bit with FileZilla for 2-years on this computer. I haven't made any recent changes to my system, but suddently NO FTP clients work.
I tried FileZilla and FireFTP (firefox extension). Neither can connect. FileZilla just gives a timeout error. FireFTP has been "connecting" for 5-minutes. No success.
I tried to bypass my Linksys router and go directly through my cable model. They still do not work.
I *CAN* connect to an FTP site using telnet command.

Are all computer modems cabable of recieveing caller ID information. I came across some opensource code for caller on on a computer and the information says that the phone wire has to be plugged into the computers "caller id capable" modem.
Know I know most people these days have a network card because most people connect using a high speed connection. However I would love to setup this program on my home computers for when I get a call and I am at my desktop I can see who is calling
