CPanel/WHM: How To Setup Secure Subdomain
Mar 20, 2007
I am really getting confused now. Some people tell me it is possible to set up a simple subdomain and add a SSL-certificate to this, while others tell me I have to set up a new account for the subdomain (subdomain.domain.com) in WHM and assign it to it's own IP-adress.
So, my queston is what is the best way to set up a secure subdomain, like [url]? I have already purchased a SSL-certificate for secure.domain.com.

I am seeking a little input from others who use multi-CPU machines with large memory as web servers and mysql servers.
I will be more than happy to give additional information I might have overlooked if you need it. Just ask.
We are starting to run more and more dedicated hosts running joomla applications. I've been trying to find the very best settings for both performance and security that I can for the servers to function well specifically with their joomla applications.
Serves are not used for *anything* else at all.
The servers are strictly used to serve up web pages. No need for anything other than what apache/php, joomla requires and a few other things such as ffmpeg, etc.
I would like to remove all tools which aren't needed for such a server, leaving a bare minimum server which is less susceptible to hacking.
I've never messed with the root account so wonder if I can simply not allow any access as root other than terminal, perhaps not even su by giving another account full root access and of course, while allowing the system to continue to function properly with the many things which must run as root.
I would like to do this on all of my public machines which are of course behind firewalls. I also have load balancers and cache devices in front of the web servers but at this time, they are not activated so aren't in the realm of this question.
Development is done in a separate environment and the data is pushed to the web server via private network to the web servers. This means no need for shared tools, FTP, or anything else which users would need in a shared environment.
The servers are 8-way IBM, running linux and apache, php/APC.
Servers have 32GB of memory and I can install up to 64GB.
Databases are run on separate machines which are also dedicated only to running mysql databases. Same machines as above.
Machines all run multiple network cards bonded as a single IP.
So, my questions are;
How can I best utilize my hardware to take advantage of their memory capacities.
For example, on the web servers, I'd like to find the best settings for httpd.conf which takes advantage of the machines resources.
On MySQL servers, I'd like to do the same as the above, taking the best advantage of the hardware/memory.
For web serving and for joomla, I seek the very best security settings I can possibly get. I say best because since they aren't used by users, there is no need to have a lot of tools and access to these machines so it should not be a problem to tighten these machines up a great deal.
Any input from those who have such experiences would be very welcome as I've been finding no one place for help on this.

to setup 1.domain.com to another host
I have domain (domain.com) which is on dedicate server with root access.
also have 2-nd-domain.com which is on hostgator host(where can i add domains via addon domains)
now i need to setup 1.domain.com subdomain on hostgator.
how can i do it ?
pls correct me, if i'm wrong
1. via Directadmin Subdomain Management tool (on domain.com) add "1" subdomain
2. check "DNS Management" section -> 1.domain.com is on main domain.com IP
Unfortunately there isn't any option to edit this record. i can only delete it and add manually. (i know, that i can do it via SSH - > edit config file, but i don't have enought experience to edit files via SSH. just know, few commands, how to archive, reboot, move, etc ...)
delete this record and add manually
DNS Management -> Add Domain Records ->
1.domain.com - A record =IP of hostgatore host
btw, did i need to add NS records?
3. go to 2-nd-domain.com and try to add 1.domain.com via addon domains.
hmm
it seems, that i'm doing something wrong, as i got
Quote:
Using nameservers with the following IPs: **.***.***.**2, **.***.***.**1 (my main domain IPs) Bind reconfiguring on gator using rndc
Created DNS entry for 1.domain.com
account is created, but IP-s are wrong

I am trying to setup a subdomain and/or virtual host to redirect to a specific port and path. I have setup my server with DDYNS through my domain name registar. Through the ddyns client I have set it to assign a subdomain of "outside.name.com" so that my server will have a easy name to get to instead of a dynamic ip address.
I have also setup on my registrars host records another subdomain of "inside.name.com" with a static IP address for internet network accessing to my server. My problem is that I have a service/program on my server that I need access to both internally and externally and this service can only be access through a port of 32400 and HTTP address of /web. (e.g. outside.name.com:32400/web or inside.name.com:32400/web)...
Is there a way that I can create a VirtualHost or Subdomain of "service.*.name.com" that redirects them to ":32400/web" of the hostname they're on? (e.g. service.outside.name.com automatically forwards or proxies--to keep it pretty--to service.outside.name.com:32400/web)

I've used many webhosts over the years and have run into various issues from which I've compiled my key wants:
Reliability - availability of mail & web are both just as important - I've had a few hosts who have great HTTP uptime, but mail can go down for hours and is not covered by any SLA. Prefer clustered solutions using a NAS, or at the least RAID-1 (or 10). I recognise downtime is inevitable, I care more about the impact of single component failure and recovery time.
Control Panel/Security - I'd prefer the host to have a custom control panel (i.e. not cPanel/WHM, Plesk/Parallels, DirectAdmin, H-Sphere etc). I really like DreamHost's panel, in particular their model of arbitrary combinations of shell users and domains underneath them. I like to use this to separate installs of untrusted software (such as MovableType, Wordpress, Gallery, Joomla) into their own user accounts so that if one gets compromised it doesn't hose everything. Need multiple domain hosting.
Disk - 2GB sufficient, 3-4GB preferable.
Bandwidth - 10GB or more (I don't really use more than 2GB but prefer not to worry about overage)
Price - I'm happy to pay US$20-30 for a premium service.
Support - I'm technically savvy and only need for support to be responsive to technical questions & issues (i.e. reporting downtime).
To provide some background - I'm currently a customer of both DreamHost and Media Temple (gs). DH sucks because their uptime is completely unpredictable, I have kept it only because their user/domain model is convenient for toying with untrusted software. (mt) was to be the ideal host but reliability of their (gs) service is crap despite all the claims about superior architecture. Additionally they don't allow separation of users/domains and I don't want to host multiple 3rd party apps in the one account. To their credit (mt)'s support is extremely responsive and the company as a whole are very transparent about outages but they simply have too many technology issues.

Wordpress installation (WPML with 3rd level domain es. site. com, fr. site. com).
I need to redirect page from subdomain to a new subdomain
Example:
esp.site.com/oldpage -> es.site.com/newpage (different subdomain)
esp.site.com/oldpage1 -> es.site.com/newpage
esp.site.com/oldpage2 -> es.site.com/newpage
Source site is very chaotic and there are no clear rule for redirection (no regex )
So I need to redirect every page but syntax:
Redirect 301 esp.site.com/oldpage http:// es.site.com/newpage
doesn't work!
which is the correct syntax ?
Can I manage all from one .htaccess file in main root (www) or should I create "esp" directory (and point old subdomain to it - one for every language) and put .htaccess in every directory with redirection ?

I've set up some subdomains up in cPanel thinking that that would automatically change any url from www.domain.co.uk/test to test.domain.co.uk.
I know these are the same thing but I would like it so that if something links to or type in the address bar www.domain.co.uk/test then the address bar displays test.domain.co.uk.

I got many complaints from our customer that are using addon domain facilites. They cannot add mail account, see site stats, etc. I checked on /var/cpanel/users, there's no domain for addon domain they have but DNS zone is still there.
When I log in to their CPANEL, addon domain was still there too.
Anyone have the same issues? We have this problem raised since about 2 weeks ago on 4 of our servers.

OK here is the background of the problem.
I wanted to host customers for one of my scripts on subdomains.
So customer A will be on [url]
customer B will be on [url], and so on and so forth.....
As far as my knowledge goes, cPanel allows me to create an addon domain with it's own FTP account.
But I need to create subdomains, each with their own FTP account.
The subdomains should be isolated from each other, meaning customerA should not be able to access customerB's files (e.g. via PHP/perl script).
I have a feeling that this is possible with some hacks/workarounds.

In an effort to install an SSL cert for a subdomain (secure.domain.com), I recreated my accounts in WHM. Account 1 has userA and domain domain.com, and Account 2 has userB and domain secure.domain.com. I think I have everything back to normal, but I want to get everything stable before testing the cert install.
My question is, when visiting cpanel.domain.com, to enter the cpanel for that account, I am able to login with both userA and userB credentials, and the same when logging in to cpanel.secure.domain.com. As stated, I have separate WHM accounts for the main domain and the secure subdomain, I have dedicated an IP address for the secure subdomain, and the main domain uses the share IP address, and also, there are separate DNS zones setup for the secure subdomain and the main domain.
How do I set it up so that only userA can login to cpanel.domain.com and only userB can login to cpanel.secure.domain.com? Or is this not an ideal setup, and if not, what would be the ideal setup here?

I am using a cpanel for my site.
While I am not using the nameserver of the cpanel hosting for my site.
I am using a 3rd party DNS server to handle the DNS thing.
I directly point www/ftp/mail/... A records to my site hosting's IP address.
And everything works well.
But there is a problem, I don't know how to set up subdomain.
I created a subdomain with my site cpanel.
And it automatically created a root directory for the subdomain under /public_html. ( .../public_html/subdomain/)
But I don't know how to make the subdomain work.
How to set the DNS records to directly point my subdomain to its root directory on the hosting?
I tried to add a A record for my subdomain. But it only direct the subdomain to /public_html the main domain's root directory.
Untill now, the subdomain is still pointed to the same page as the main domain.
