I run several sites and all of them are hosted at invision. The main reason for having my sites hosted there is that my sites are "forum centered" and I'm very happy with the service that I have got over the last few years from them, so I don't want to change that.
However, I now wish to expand and provide my users with a file repository. The problem is, whilst hosting my sites at invision is fine, hosting my files there would be quite expensive...
Thus, I'm now looking for a host to host my files and nothing else. (I run chess sites, so I'll be providing my users with files and possibly a gallery. All legal material, of course).
I don't need any download manager or anything of the kind. Invision forums actually has its own download manager, and I can have my files hosted externally (i.e. other than on my site).
Thus, I'm looking for a host that offers specific packages for what I am looking for - I would not need scripting or any 'fancy' features, just file storage with FTP access.
How much space? around 1 GB, possibly 2 in the future, maybe 3 or 4 if I add the gallery one day.
And bandwidth, as people will be downloading files from my site.
I've been looking around, but it's just so difficult: they all offer webhosting services for people who need to have their sites hosted, etc. and that's not what I need.
Any recommendations?
I don't have any fixed budgets, my focus will be on price, speed and reliability. Preferably a hosting company which has been around for a while and has good reviews.

Our congregation needs webspace to archive mp3 and mp4 files of the weekly messages. Low mp3 is about 3 MB size. High mp3 is about 20 MB size. mp4 video is about 325 MB size. We would provide links to the files so they could be downloaded - no online streaming is needed. Also no normal website stuff - just file storage space and ability to download by anyone who has the URL links to the files.
1and1.com has 250 GB storage with 2.5 TB/mo bandwidth usage for $10/mo. Their phone rep said this type of use of their web space is OK. I wouldn't even look any further except I've read a lot of bad reviews about them.

I have a few questions:
1. I was wondering whether my choice in web host is limited to the particular country where I reside, or whether I can choose a web host from any country? If the latter is true, are there any disadvantages to this?
2. Also, I would like to set up a website and from what I understand of my investigations so far, there exist two possibilities. The first is to download all the necessary software and do it all by myself which will also involve finding a good host that meets my needs and also optimising the website for Google. The other way would be to subscribe to an online company which provides all of these services in one package at a determined price. Which would be better?
3. Has anyone ever come across a site called SiteBuildIt.com, or also known as SiteSell.com? Would this be a good option and are they or do they do what they claim? If it is a good option, are there any other sites similar to SiteSell? Therefore, would it be more practical to subscribe to a company like SiteSell where I can get all my hosting, web design and SEO needs all under one roof or would I be better off going it on my own?
4. With regard to my hosting needs, how much storage and bandwidth will I be looking at in order to run a small real estate website?

I will be starting a targeted (niched) video sharing site in the next couple weeks. I know it will require loads of space/bandwidth. My budget is under $450/month.
plan out an effective hosting strategy which will keep the costs low, while giving my providing a fast and reliable viewing experience for my visitors?
Somebody suggested going with Amazon S3 once traffic starts to pick up. But I don't understand how it works. (there is also something called amazon Ec2.. what the heck is the difference )
If I start with say a dual Xeon dedi box, with 2000GB bandwidth, can I serve all my videos/files through amazon while the conversion takes place on the dedicated server? In that case, how would I transfer the files from the dedi box to amazon? Is this even possible?
Could somebody please clarify the whole process? I am expecting about 1000 hits a day within 3 weeks, if they each watch a 200MB video a day... that's a lot of bandwidth!

One of our resellers has an account.. When looking into cpanel, it says that that account is using 3300megs. When we go into the ftp of that account, in reality it is only using 1.3megs. This is a huge difference! Most of folders are empty.
We are using the latest version of WHM and Cpanel.

I'm completely torn on going the absolute budget route vs spending more for something that'll allow easy upgradeability in the future. I basically need lots of space but file sending-- media like mp3s, video, etc.
it'll be raid 5 and I'll need at least 2-3TB initially but the ability to expand would be nice.
option 1:
nice chassis with plenty of hotswap bays with sas expanders
expensive sas raid card
option 2:
cheap chassis to serve "immediate" needs and go with more later.
not sure what I'd use as a card? maybe even onboard?
regarding reliability: I once saw a database of failure rates of different models. raptor was the most reliable of the "desktop" drives. anyone have the link? I'm wondering of the seagate ES drives are worth the extra money vs the non-ES drives. they're supposedely more reliable and the "server versions" of sata drives.

I have a Sonicwall NSA 3500. Does anyone know if you can use it to create bandwidth charts of Network Objects (e.g. IPs or Groups of IPs)?
I am thinking something like Cacti, but I don't know the code to pull that info or if it's even technically possible.

what size stripe size people are using on their web servers on their raid setups?
Larger, or smaller considering the nature of web based files being smaller.

I am hosting 80 domains on a dedicated server which is dishing up only about 80GB per month in bandwidth. Disk space is minimal at under 20GB. Sites are mostly PHP5 and MySQL. Some Perl. Using apache2.
Right now the server is a dual Opteron and it seems to be overkill for the job at hand. In an effort to lower my monthly cost I am wondering how small of a server I can go with and still allow some margin for only minimal growth.
Dare I go as small as one of these (from cheapest to most $):
1.7 Pentium 4 and 512 RAM, IDE
Athlon 3000+ and 1GB RAM, SATA
2.8 Pentium D and 1GB RAM, SATA

Used chirpy's method
/etc/init.d/chkservd stop
/etc/init.d/mysql stop
umount /var/tmp
umount /tmp
replace "256000" "512000" -- /scripts/securetmp
rm /usr/tmpDSK
/scripts/securetmp --auto
cd /tmp
ln -s /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
/etc/init.d/mysql start
/etc/init.d/chkservd start
df
Problem
[root@host ~]# umount /tmp
umount: /tmp: device is busy
umount: /tmp: device is busy
[root@cmee34 ~]# lsof | grep /tmp
sshd 6650 root 9u unix 0xf57fe300 24988 /tmp/ssh-SDVLUi6650/agent.6650
If I killall -9 sshd, I got obviously logged out of ssh. I need to make /tmp 1GB instead of the current 500MB it is now.

I seem to be hitting the tcpsndbuf max size occasionally, my host says they can not change it (there is plenty of free ram) and if I want it raised, I need to upgrade to a larger plan.
Was just curious as to what kind of tcpsndbuf size you guys have on your VPS plans?

my website is situated on a folder named xxxx/public_html/
Now I discovered a folder named logs. its path is xxxx/logs

is it a relationship between my server overload and my access.log big size?

I have never been to a datacenter. My friend has a rack at a datacenter near my house so he will be able to provide me some space for a monthly payment. At first I thought of getting a 1U server but it ended up costing too much and a hassle to find the proper sized parts. Now I have decided to go with a mini tower instead so I was wondering whether it would make a difference if I were to use a mini tower or a larger sized tower. If I used a mini would I be able to fit more computers or would it not make a difference?

I manage a high traffic website on one of my dedicated servers. It currently serves around 2 million uniques/mo.
In time, due to page changes, around 200 important URIs got a redirect [L,R=301] in the main .htaccess file that's sitting on the root directory.
Redirects are in the form of : person/J/James_Blake_2000/ --> /user/James_Blake/
Thus, the .htaccess file has reached well above 200 lines.
I would like to kindly ask for advice: should I limit the dimension of this htaccess file ?
How do you guys treat these permanent redirects?

I own a parenting site, mid-sized I think (1100 members). We were recently "fired" by our host for server load. Sooo, I'm in the market for a new host. I'm so gun shy right now, because everyone is reassuring me they can handle us, but then so did the company that we're currently with.
Specs:
Phpbb3 software
Bandwith - 17.7gb so far this month
Disk Space - 111.3 mb this month
There are an average of 100 members on line at a time. I've been told we need a dedicated server by some, though I don't think we're big enough at this venture for one, and it's out of our budget. I realize the things I listed above don't have much to do with server load, but I figured I'd share anyway.

I have a database which is growing to have about 100 tables. These tables will grow in size and sometime I will need to use RAID 5, I am told by my server provider.
My questions are:-
1. if these other servers are mirrors, should I have the database stored on each server?
2. when one server gets too busy, does the RAID query a lesser-used server so as not to bog down the first one?
3. Or, do I need to have different content in each db on each server so a query gets what it needs form each?
