XO Transit - Recent Experiences

Jan 4, 2007

Does anyone have any recent experience in dealing with XO for transit? Any noticable latency/congestion on their network or at peering points? Overall customer satisfaction?

It seems most have dropped XO from their hosting networks due to issues. Since their recent network upgrade and business division I am wondering if anything has improved. We already are located in an XO facility bringing in other transit and of course the easiest solution for our next provider would be to bring XO transit into the mix.

How IP Transit Works

Aug 3, 2009

how IP transit works? An EU IP transit company who has 5 pop in different country has different pricing for the bandwidth. when they own ASN and have pop in 5 locations.

Whom do these wholesale bandwidth player pays? To tier1 companies?

An US wholesale bandwidth company has same pricing for USA/NL/DE but the company in EU has different pricing for SE/FI/DE/Russia.

Transit Providers And IP Addresses

Apr 2, 2007

I am going to rent a rack on a carrier neutral DC (Interxion in Madrid, Spain) and get bandwitdh from a single provider (Easynet). We don't have the knowledge nor the required time to become RIPE member, setup BGP from multiple providers, etc. so we are going to use a single transit provider.

The question is: In the future, will I be able to add another transit provider and setup BGP using the same IP addresses our current provider will give us?

95th Percentile Vs. Transit Billed

Jul 31, 2009

On the 95th percentile model, I recall reading bursting not calculated for 36 hrs in this model.

In our application, for now, we will only be uploading to the colocation 6 days a week, on a 10 meg upstream - averaging anywhere from 2 hrs nightly to Saturday ....real small upload.

When I look at 95th percentile, I am looking at it that we would be billed at 9Mbps if we were to utilize this billing method as opposed to purchased transit.

some light on the math & or the *36 hr* burstable bandwidth ?

Transit Or Colocation Denver With GBLX

May 28, 2007

where I can get some GBLX in Denver, Co. I have been trying to get GBLX fiber to Colorado Springs, but the loop is just too expensive and the price comes to $95 per MB.

Then I try to look in Denver, but it seems that none of the facilities carry GBLX, and the ones that could carry are asking much $65 per mb with 100 Mb at least commitment.

So far, I called Internap and they quote me $65 per mb which I find decent for their quality, but they don’t have their own DC in Denver. It seems that Internap use XO facility which is not good for me at all, (I have heard some bad histories about the XO facilities). I am looking to colo 1 cab with 20 MB/s with possibility to expand to 4 cabs and 50 MB/s in the next 6 months. Price should be decent.

Any Recent Reviews For VectorLevel

Dec 21, 2008

I plan on opening a local website that will have a forum on it. I think the forum will mostly have members from my area, neighbors basically. I live in Irvine, California and thus wanted a local hosting company. It was really by random chance that I bumped into Vector Level which I found out is based in Irvine as well. Their plans look very reasonable for what I need, just a small forum basically. Speed is important and their website loads pretty fast so that's good.

I've already given them a call and a guy named Robert answered a lot of my questions. Before I order an account, can anyone comment on them? current customers? I searched and found a few reviews but they were a few months old so I don't know if they are still hosting with them. I understand they are a new company which is why I wanted to do my research more thoroughly before ordering.

Simple Helix - Any Recent Reviews

Oct 12, 2009

As I am about to complete the move of our business sites over to our current Simple Helix account from an overloaded, bogged down VPS, I had noticed a few negative reviews on the forums.

I have had SH account for quite some time. It was hosting a simple PHP page that I couldn't put up on our old ASP server. I had never had any issues with it and when we began experiencing problems on our other sites, we chose to begin the move to SH.

I had heard a few grumblings about it being sold, etc, and actually had our sites moved on to the new servers recently.

After a few initial issues after setup on the new server it has been very reliable and extremely fast.

Before I complete the move, I wanted to request a few more reviews.

We are different than the usual SH customer in that we are not hosting Magento. We are a very professional business looking for a reliable, managed hosting solution. I am having trouble defining a line where it makes sense to switch from shared to dedicated managed hosting.

1 Year Contract For IP Transit, Have You Gotten Setup Fees Waived

Jul 4, 2008

I might end up colocating at a datacenter which serves as a POP for cogent, however the setup fee is $1,000 for this (they already have their own fiber in their building).

Have you ever gotten the setup fee waived before or any tips on negotiating these kinds of things. I don't know if its upto the sales guy to make the call or not.

FreeBSD 5.4 - "recent Enough"

May 29, 2008

I've been on FreeBSD for years and I like it. It's a low maintenance OS.

I want to get a new server with RAID-1. My host only offers this machine with FreeBSD 5.4 Release i386.

Most recent stable FreeBSD is 6.2.

From a security standpoint, is it acceptable to run FreeBSD 5.4 Release i386 today?

Dedicatednow Experiences?

Apr 10, 2009

They are sure running some great specials right now but sometimes things aren't as good as they seem. Any experiences from people especially on their management services & such from users who have had them (or used to have them) for some period of time (not brand new or short-time users--- unless the short time was due to very bad experiences from the start).

And please-no "secret reps" telling me how great you are, would like some actual user experiences. Have been very happy with the same provider for over 6 years but their pricing is not reflecting the current trends in server technology & I'm growing tired of "negotiating" (old tech at new tech prices) so I've been looking for some options for the first time in years.

High-end users preferred (quads-dual quads etc.) but mainly want to know if they live up to their management & security promises (response times SLA, tech knowledge, etc. for "fully managed".

VPSLand Experiences

Jul 16, 2008

A few month ago I needed some Windows VPS server and checked out WHT.

Apparently some folks recommended VPSLand and I thought it would be a good choice. Well after a few weeks with them I decided to move to another firm, because their Support is worse then I have ever seen with any hosting company.

It takes days to get an answer and in one occasion i even had to cancel the server since they couldn't get it to work again

Then yesterday one server went offline and after waiting a half day on support I received an email telling me that the server was online since months.

Then the hit today was that they just shut down one of the server cause he would use to much CPU

The thing which puzzles me is that they shut it down without notice and have me, the client, figuring out why i can't login

Long story short. I will move all my server to another company and can only recommend you to stay away from those guys.

Mosso Experiences ....

Nov 18, 2008

I'm a longtime lurker and finally decided to register today. This place has been great for hosting info., etc.

I've been piggybacking on a friend's Mosso hosting account for about six months. That is, I pay a % of the $100 full-account price, as I haven't needed the full allotment of space, bandwidth, etc.

While I like Mosso and especially the simple control panel, etc., it seems like they've had a tough run of stability problems lately. Other than a couple instances of my site taking a few seconds to load, I haven't been impacted myself (that I can tell).

HOWEVER, I've noticed Mosso very recently has changed the format of their Status blog by eliminating the archives and only showing the latest post or two. This tells me Mosso is concerned with the number and length of outages they've had lately, as it's no longer possible to review recent downtime issues as it was for most of the past few years. (I was watching Mosso long before switching to their hosting.)

Further, maybe I'm just paranoid, and it seems like others would be complaining if it's true, but lately I've suspected some email is going AWOL. There have been several instances lately when I've checked my email after a day or two and noticed 10- and 12-hour gaps with no emails (not even spam). I've also had weird stretches where I've sent emails to a dozen people but only received replies from half of them. (These are friends and business associates; people from whom I'd expect a 95% reply rate.)

After a lot of comments, and especially complaints, on this board over the past couple years, it seems like Mosso rarely comes up here anymore, which seems like it should be a good thing. I'm curious if others here have had recent experience with Mosso and, if so, if they've had any problems.

My Reliablesite.net Experiences

Apr 22, 2008

This thread is mostly for me to keep track of how things go with this host and hopefully to benefit any others that might be thinking of hosting with them in the future.

I'm going to try and keep my interactions with this host updated here over time.

04/22/08

Posted a pre-sales question in their forum, answer received 58 minutes later. (Good sign, but presales/sales generally have fast response times)

3:30pm

Decided to give them a shot, ordered the following package (some upgrades from the default package).

Confirmation page says my site will be setup within 24 hours. Not promising as far as auto provisioning goes.

3:35pm

Checked my email for order confirmation. I'm happy to see my site has already been provisioned! The email states that it might take longer (up to the previously mentioned 24 hours) for some of the upgraded items to take affect, I'm ok with this.

The email also contains all of the information I need to get things going, IPs, URLs, etc.

I'll update again later with any new information.
