Weird Periodic Hang

Jul 9, 2007

For the last week, my vps (directadmin on centos on xen) has become unresponsive every three days at approximately 5 AM, and I'm baffled about why. It doesn't crash, but it stops accepting incoming connections until it's rebooted.

I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this. /var/log/messages gives no useful information. There are no unusual cronjobs running at that time.

Anyone heard of anything like this before or have any advice about how to troubleshoot?

Slow Periodic Site Speed (SLHost)

Nov 5, 2007

I moved from shared host to VPS a few days back. Since the move, the site becomes slow during particular time of the day. It appeared to be an issue of cron run by their another client and after promising that they would move that client to another node (I have spent more than 25 days to follow up on this till now) they backed off from their words but informed me about an alternative. Now, they say that the cron of that client was executing many scripts and they have spaced those scripts.

I am looking for a long-term host and was wondering:

1. VPS provides a minimum guaranteed stuff so what is the use of that guarantee if one client can make the server crawl (imagine 5 minutes or more to open a site).

2. Can a host be trusted who does not honour words.

Apache :: Periodic Request Timed-out Warnings

Sep 21, 2013

So I've set everything up manually a few times before now, but I got so bored of configuring everything for a manual install I just said screw it and used XAMPP this time - so my circumstances are not completely ideal.

Basically what I am looking to find out is how to improve loading speeds for Apache, PHP and MySQL on my dedi server?

The server I have is of the following spec:
Intel Xeon CPU E5-1650 V2 (3.50Ghz with 12 cores total)
64 GB DDR3 ECC
2 x 2TB SATA3 (RAID 0/1)

use Windows Web 2008 R2 so only 32GB of the RAM is usable.

With all the abive aside, here is the important part: Whilst people are browsing the websites I have configured they are random hit with a blank white page saying "Your request has timed out. Please retry the request." - I have about 100 unique hits daily and a lot of people report the same problem, and I have even had it myself.

It feels as if the server has much more power than Apache and co. is trying to utilize - what can I do?

Apache :: How To Create Rotated Logs For Every Periodic Time

Aug 26, 2014

I have configure my Apache to create rotated logs for every periodic time. It worked fine with my local PC, but when it is being configured on to a server system, the actual error.log file is not being update, only the rotated logs are created. If i remove the Error Log command from httpd.conf for Error Log Rotation, again it works fine as usual.

OpenVZ PAE Hang?

Aug 12, 2007

I am trying to run the OpenVZ PAE kernel with 8 gigs of ram to back the server, however the server keeps suffering from hangings.

It starts 2 or 3 vpses fine, but once it hits 4 or so, it hangs without a kernel panic or any other proper error message.

The kernel version is 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5.028stab039.1PAE but it also does it on 2.6.18-ovz028stab039.1-enterprise

Anybody have the same problem and come up with a solution? Node is running CentOS 5.

Apache Used To Hang

Apr 4, 2008

I have a dedicated server running CentOS which has been been running fine for a while now.

On the odd day Apache used to hang, I presume due to load so I installed SIM (System Integrity Manager) to check the status of httpd and to re-start when necessary.

Every now and again SIM would email saying that apache was re-started, no big deal.

Then this morning I got a email from SIM saying apache was down but couldn't be re-started. I then logged into the shell and tried to do a: service httpd restart

I then got a message saying something like: could not bind to port 80. I then tried to kill all httpd processes and re-start apache but the problem persisted. I then just rebooted my server and apache started fine.

Since then I have had hundreds of emails from SIM saying that it has had to re-start apache. Somehow it is detecting it as down and re-starting it. Apache seems to be up and fine. Re-installing SIM does not help.

The weird thing is when I logged in using Putty I got the "server's host key did not match the signature supplied" message like something had changed.

Rkhunter does not return anything just a couple of warnings.

Does anybody know what would cause sim to constantly detect Apache as down in this situation and also how this could happen with no changes being made?

Coldfusion 8 - MSSQL 5 Page Hang

Oct 26, 2009

We had a Coldfusion site running MySQL without issues. We are in the process of doing some upgrades and as part of that we recently switched over to MSSQL 5. Ever since that happened, we will have random page hangs. This usually happens on pages with more complex queries, but it is very random. There is no timeout error on the server, no page cannot be displayed errors, no errors of any kind, the page will just hang. We have been monitoring our server resource monitor and we can see when the page 'gives up', we will go from 100% CPU down to almost 0, and then the page simply never recovers. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? When there is no error message of sorts it makes it very problematic to troubleshoot.

Server Hang - No Free Swap

I encounter this problem in one of my server today..

Memory is 99% used

Grsec Kernel Either Panics Or Hang On Reboot

Mar 29, 2008

I installed latest kernel ( 2.6.24.4 or 2.6.24.3 ) with grsec which either panics or hang on reboot before reaching boot prompt, just when /sbin/init runs. Experienced the same with grsec patched kernel 2.6.22.9 on several servers with the same hardware.

On server with AMD Operton, I was able to successfully compile 2.6.24.4 with grsec and boot into.

Apache :: Awkward Delay / Hang While Using Proxy

Apr 11, 2013

I am using apache proxypass to proxy to 4 different ports (java/jsp applications) with the following configurations (for each):

<VirtualHost *:80>
ProxyPreserveHost On
ProxyRequests Off
ServerName *****.org
ProxyPass / http://*****.org:8080/ retry=0
ProxyPassReverse / http://*****.org:8080/
</VirtualHost>

Everything seems work fine until an awkward delay / connection timeout occurs. The web application hangs for about 5 to 15 seconds and starts working normally after that period. It's certainly not the application's issue because everything is fine when using IP address to access it.

When I enabled the debug log in apache, I found out that every time the server seems to hang, the following error appears in the apache error log and the number of apache child processes keep on increasing (ps aux | grep apache).

[Thu Apr 11 10:20:41 2013] [debug] proxy_util.c(1818): proxy: grabbed scoreboard slot 4 in child 13208 for worker proxy:reverse
[Thu Apr 11 10:20:41 2013] [debug] proxy_util.c(1837): proxy: worker proxy:reverse already initialized
[Thu Apr 11 10:20:41 2013] [debug] proxy_util.c(1934): proxy: initialized single connection worker 4 in child 13208 for (*)
[Thu Apr 11 10:20:41 2013] [debug] proxy_util.c(1818): proxy: grabbed scoreboard slot 3 in child 13208 for worker http://*****.org:8080/
.....
Also, the access log (access.log) completely stops during that hang period.

This debug message keeps on repeating as long as Apache/web-application is not responding. The application starts to work normally after that duration and the number of apache child process decrease to the normal number.

Weird RSS Feed

I've got a vB site which has a RSS Poster Bot (fetches RSS Feeds then posts them). However, for some strange reason, it stopped working. Theres no errors in the error_log and when I do a manual run, it just times out after a minute or so.

The only thing I can think of is that one of the RSS Feeds is down or one of the sites is blocking the server IP for some reason.

Weird Spamd

Apr 28, 2008

i have this really annoying issue i'm hoping you can help with.

it seems the spamd child process gets stuck and causes 100% cpu usage. but this doens't just happen randomly, its only for this single user account. e.g. take a look at top output:

4581 <username> 93 40:58.87 1.3 82624 52m 2280 R spamd child

the 93 is 93% cpu usage. 40:58 is how long the process has been running, 40 minutes and counting (i just killed it though). and all it tells me its running spamd child. it usually dies after a few hours but only after causing 200% cpu usage (100% on both cpus) and making my server load skyrocket. This happens at least twice daily at no set times.

this user isn't a spammer. no scripts, no mail queue generation, no email accounts even.

running cpanel 11, centos 4.

Weird Bind

Oct 8, 2007

I have a weird problem since the movement of our ip range with one of our servers. Bind doesn`t seem to react on any changes we make.

For example, the server still resolves to the old ip adress while we changed all of those with ipswap.sh (directadmin)
The weird thing is that all zone files are 100% Correct. Ip`s are all changed and no sign of the old ip whatsoever.
Again, the nameserver still resolves to the old ip`s.

Also when i create a new domain, named.conf is changed and the zone file is created sucessfully. Still the nameserver doesn`t seem to add the domain name.

Restarting, reloading and even reinstalling named doesn`t help

Weird Vsftp/ftp

Aug 4, 2007

Got a couple of questions on my Centos server.

It is my only (at present), and main production web server located in a datacentre in the Uk.

I am running Centos 4-4.2 since a hardware failure earlier this year neccesitated a stressful overnight ssh reinstall.

I have it setup pretty well now (I think!) but I cant work out how I am able to sftp into the server!

Reason being, I have installed VSFTPD (made sure there were no ftpd daemons installed or running), and when I stop this service via sshd, it does not affect the fact that I can then sftp in to the server using an ftp client such as wsftp pro...

Also, even when I change the vsftpd.conf to jail certain ftp users to a directory, it seems to have no effect and ftp works exactly as it did before without imposing the restrictions?

There is no other ftp daemon showing up in the process list.

I have tripwire installed, rootkit hunter, and cisco hardware firewall in conjunciton with ip tables.

I dont 'think' its hacked!

Also, the last time I upgraded centos was from an early v4 to 4.4.2 due to major hardware failure on the server and the fact I didnt have a mirrored OS/server backup (due to cost) *but I did of course have all my sites and databases etc)
I am rather scared to upgrade Centos kernel to the latest version in part due to horror stories I have heard from others (NOT regarding Centos specifically) from kernel upgrades going wrong or compatibility issues etc that mean that I am very very reluctant to do it on our main production server..

I am imminently buying another server to act as a failover and backup for the existing one,but is keeping my current Centos install as it is and holding out to wait for a test server the best thing to do? (are there any serious security issues in 4.4.2? bugs etc?)
Or should I have confidence and get Yum to do its business!

Weird Network

Aug 9, 2007

This is a very weird network issue that we are currently facing.

There are 2 servers, 1.1.1.1 and 2.2.2.2;

I can ping both IPs from my computer at the office or from anywhere else.

BUT, I cannot ping each other. For example, I log into 1.1.1.1 and cannot ping 2.2.2.2 and vice-versa.

This is very weird and I am thinking this is not OS related and something beyond that.

I was wondering if anyone of you came across this type of issue and possible direct us in the right direction.

Weird Masked IP Result

May 6, 2009

On one of my Web sites I have it set to e-mail me whenever someone tries a SQL Injection attempt through the GET.

(I find some of the results interesting and/or funny.)

I also have it e-mail me the visitor's IP address and browser client.
I recently got one with a result for the IP address that certainly got my interest.

It read:

The PHP scripting I use to get the IP address is:

Code:
$visIP = isset($_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR']) ? $_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR'] : $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];
I guess I'm wondering how they may have done it, and if this indicates an issues where people can hack my site (for control or at least info) through this method?

Weird Router Packet

Jun 17, 2009

We have a license application client(IBM/LUM) that connects to a license server outside our network.

The clients works this way... it binds a random port and tries to connect to the remote IP with UDP port 1515.

Through wireshark I could see that it reaches the destionation, although the way back is unreachable.

If I add this random port to our router Port Forward rule, it works perfectly. Although this is not a solution cause the port is changing every time.

Isnt this strange? Other applications open random ports as well and comunication is two-way reachable.

If I connect directly to the internet, it works perfectly as well.

What can I try to do with our ZyWall USG300 Router to fix this situation?

Sites Stats Seem Weird

Feb 19, 2008

I've a few similar video sites and haven't noticed much difference over the years with their stats. They usually average anywhere from 50-100mb downloaded per day.

Suddenly this month, one site is practically going off the scale...600-700mb...up to 1gb downloaded per day...I'm like...wtf?! The other site is reporting normal BW.

I'm using awstats with hotlink protection enabled.

Is something or someone draining my bandwidth?
