VMWare ESXi 4.0 Network Started Consuming Up To 100 Mbps
Oct 20, 2009
I have 4 VMs running on a VMWare ESXi 4.0 server and it was running fine until yesterday when suddenly the network started consuming up to 100 mbps and making everything slow.
I have checked through vSphere and I dont see any VM consuming that much, it only show that the host is using that much.
I am attaching the picture from vSphere.

Anyone using VMware ESXi? What is the best management software for VMware ESXi? VMware ESXi seems very good option for VM hosting since it's free. I would love to know some experiences from professionals.

i'm trying to run ubuntu as a guest os on windows 2003 via vmware, although i can't get networking to work.
-Bridged Connection
-1 Physical Nic
-Static Ips
This is what i've done so far.
1. Installed Vmware, added ubuntu virtual machine and configured network settings in vmware to bridged.
2. In Ubuntu went to, System - Administration - Networking and configured ETH1 with the following:
-Static Ip address
-External Network IP
-Subnet mask
-External Gateway address
3. Disabled Vmware dhcp service.
Am i forgetting something?
Do i need to be setting the network info to use internal info from the bridged network?

I added a USB nic to my main server which also acts as VM server so I can bridge some VMs on a separate network then that actual server, for security purposes. This nic has no IP and is connected to another router. My private LAN router (router1) is connected to that router. (router2)
In vmware server I made a new bridged network to eth1 which is the USB nic.
now for whatever reason, there does not seem to be communication on that new nic. if I set a static IP on a VM sometimes I can ping the gateway, sometimes not. It's on and off. Also, DHCP won't work at all, but I know DHCP works on that network as if I plug a PC into that router I get an IP right away.
that this is a home setup, not an internet setup, so I have full physical access.

I got a Linux VPS from a hosting company, highly rated for their support on this forum. During the pre-sales, I asked what type of connection speed is provided on the VPS, and I was told 100 Mbps. That was a month ago.
To reconfirm, I just asked again from a live sales guy about connection speed and he suggested same 100 Mbps.
This time, however the answer was not "direct":
***********
Please wait for a site operator to respond.
You are now chatting with 'xxxxx'
xxxxx: Hello, my name is xxxxx. Thank you for contacting yyyyy yyy! To whom am I speaking with and how may I assist you?
you: Hi Quick question about the VPS
you: what is the connection speed on the VPS servers
xxxxx: The VPS have 100Mbps NICs. So upto 100Mbps
you: great - thanks.
you: have a good day
xxxxx: You too. Thanks
***********
I am pretty sure the original sales rep did not qualify this "upto 100 Mbps".
I have created a support ticket, but I am expecting them to respond that "100 Mbps is shared on VPS, and that's why you may not be seeing that".
I will wait for the response, but am mad that I am only seeing 10 Mbps.
Is this type of sales practice normal for VPS sellers with good reputation on this board?

A lot of dedicated servers offer options of 10 mbps or 100 mbps link.
What does that really mean?
Does it mean I get the 100mbps connection all to myself so I can send out data at 100mbps? Or am I sharing that 100mbps link with others but I could burs to 100mbps on occasions?
Also some advertise "unmetered" 10 or 100 mbps. Again does that mean anything?
What about "dedicated" 10 /100 mbps? How is that different?

I am planning to drop ESXi on a company server to consolidate some existing boxes, however I cannot for the life of me figure out VMWare's licensing structure, with regards to managing the 'free' version of ESXi. It's free, only VirtualCenter (apparently required to manage the hypervisor) works for 60 days. I'm pretty sure I must be missing something here, anyone got experience with deploying ESXi, if so, what's required to remotely manage it?

My client's site's allocated 10GB/month bandwidth got over run to 12GB so far for this month. Our monthly bandwidth doesnt hit even 2GB.
Fortunately, my host, medialayer, hasnt pulled down the site for overusage of bandwidth.
Looking at awstats,
114.80.100.206 consumed 4.57 GB on May 14th and
114.80.100.207 consumed 5.18 GB on May 15th.
I was told to block the IPs using .htaccess, but this can go on daily from different IPs and I cant simply sit and monitor and block IPs everyday.
Is there some solution to this ? Auto-block when an IP consumes 500MB in day or something similar?

We are facing a very problematic situation since last several months due to accessive bandwith usage. But we are sure this is only local traffic.
We have 2 Servers with our hosting provider
Server A - this is a VPS
all our webfiles/domains/dns/nameservers reside on this server
Server B - this is a dedicated server
contains only databases
(we are actively running vbulletin based forums on this servers)
Since last several months we are facing huge bandwith increase since we have transferred only our databases to Server B. (earlier database + everything was on Server A) We never ever consumed even 50% of the entire allocated bandwith in past when we were on Server A.
But only after moving the database from Server A to Server B we have found this tremendous increase,
Can we do something about same ? as both the servers belong to same hosting provider.
We are not sure but expect that this is only local network traffic between 2 servers.

I have a friend running a Sun v40z server with VMWare, and I am currently renting a virtual "box" from him. I'm just getting my feet wet with this, so I told him to start me out really low and let me work up as I see the need.
He has started me with a 512kbps 95th percentile plan. I am planning on hosting a few smaller sites in my area that would probably at most use a gig of bandwidth or so per month. I've tried doing the math etc, but I am finding it hard to find a general number of sites like this that I could run without overages. I realize I can spike over my 512 for 36 hours or less per month without overages, I would just like an idea of how many sites like I described it would take to do so. ^_^;
So I figured I would ask the folks with experience in this area, before I go out and sell a bunch of accounts I can't handle without some intense overages.
I am using DirectAdmin on this server also, if that's of any relevance.

I am about to purchase a vbulletin license in a few days and start a site. I will start the forums first and get the talking going and build the main site afterwards. Of course the site will suck at first as far as visitors. But what is a good hosting plan to support me for a good little while? I project we'll get up to 150 active users at a time within the first 6 or 7 months with about 50 browsing the main site....(nothing wrong with wishful thinking )
So, what hosting plan is best to hold me for a while? Not which company, but what specs of the plan are best to hold 100 active users at a time? I dont want to continue to upgrade my hosting plan alot. I'd rather just buy a nice shared hosting plan now to hold me for at least a year or so....until I have to upgrade.
For those who have dedicated servers, at one point is it time to upgrade to a dedicated server?

I've been with JaguarPC for over a year. I hosted two sites, one on VPS, another on semi-dedicated. I had to give up VPS after a couple of months when it turned out it was impossible to upgrade my operation system despite several attempts.
Today I'm canceling the second site on semi-dedicated server even though at first it was good (and cheap compared others). Unfortunately, over time the server was getting less and less reliable, there were frequent outages and connection problems. It seemed I was usually the first one to spot the problem and I opened a ticket; one of them had a dozen or so replies as I would post almost every day that the site was down or slow. So I had to leave this semi-dedicated too.
JaguarPC positives:
despite server performance issues, they have fast and friendly support; I liked to work with these guys and they showed patience. They even offered me free upgrade on VPS to a better operational system, but I chose to move on to try other waters
they were flexible enough to install software I needed without problems
JaguarPC negatives:
server problems, probably some overselling and/or not enough attention to the bad guys with buggy or heavy websites
Now I moved to GlowHost.com and pay over two times as much for a semi-dedicated server. Here are my first impressions:
server seems OK so far,
support - they are also fast (probably even faster than JPC), even though they seem not to be as flexible as JaguarPC regarding installation of common software. For example, I asked them to install zlib to use gzip compression, but they said they know better and gzip compression is not something that would benefit my site and I would have to move to a dedicated server to have it installed (?). I was a little surprised since even some regular shared hosts have zlib library installed and I would think a semi-dedicated server (with no more than 30 domains on the server as it's possible to host only one domain and considering the price) should be treated as something more than just a shared server and users who choose semi-dedicated server actually do it to improve performance over shared server.
Either way, I'll see how it goes later; as long as the server is stable and fast I guess I shouldn't complain.

I've had a server running for a year or so and all of the sudden the server error log started outputting a very strange message that i've never seen before:
Code:
'groups' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
From what I understand this means apache is trying to run a program that doesn't exist, what could be triggering this?
Running Apache/2.4.9 on win2008.

which should I get and would I notice anything at all in terms of speed?
my server may have reasonable traffic every month. I mean, it will be used for FTP but also for hosting exchange and also a couple of websites. Sure, I know best practice is to seperate exchange etc... etc... but for some reasons I cannot do this at all.
so will i really notice any difference if I get 100MBPS and if so, how much?

I'm not a HE representative in anyway, that's why this isn't at the offer forum, but it seems HE is wanting to increase the number of ASNs that advertise v6 address space through them.
This offer is limited to a single gigE, you won't buy more at that price
"Specials Run BGP+IPv6+IPv4 and get $5/Mbps!"
[url]
I'm quoting a representative:
Quote:
IPv6 and IPv4 Full Gige AS Special (1000 Mbps) $5,000/month, no setup fee (For customers with their own AS and *both* IPv4 and IPv6 address space.
In order to get this special rate they must configure and run IPv6 BGP over the connection.)
Customer must run IPv6 and announce their own IPv6 address space to Hurricane via BGP to get this pricing, otherwise the price for the Gigabit Ethernet port is $(sic)/month.
In order to take advantage of the AS special, the customer must have already had their AS number for at least 3 months prior to when they order.
This means that if they don't already have an AS number they can't qualify by getting one just to take advantage of our special.
This is only valid at some of our locations.
but this is just info not an offer so I won't name the representative in anyway.
I don't know which are the locations,

I have contacted a data center about colocating a server and I am lost on the data conversion. I want to reproduce a website that is pushing 1500gb per month. The problem is I dont understand bandwidth that well. How many real world gb is a 2mbps connection.
And how many mbps would it take to get to 1500gb per month? They want to sell me 1000gb for $50 (yes its a budget host) and charge $0.50 per GB over. Which would be like $250 so I would be paying $300 a month total. Which is not a good deal in my book.
I know 2mbps is not going to add up to 1000gb transfer I am just trying to get a idea.

When most providers sell you bandwidth for 1000GB, then it is usually 500 in / 500 out.
When providers sell 1MBPS then that averages out to 324GB.
When a provider charges by the MBPS is that totaling both the in and out together?

I am working with one of the new DCs that we deal with to negotiate some colo pricing and setups. They are not huge on colo, in fact they do very little of it. Hard to believe out of about 1200 servers in their DC, their colo section will not even fill 2 to 3 racks.
They do not even have a setup to price based on per Mbps, I'm sure they know about where they need to be if they dig into it, but they want me to work up a proposal based on what I need (they are working hard to work with me and keep our business).
Their network is fine, nothing outstanding but plenty strong for our needs.
They use mostly Time Warner and Level 3. I think I can even setup with them to provide my own rack, which I prefer to do since it would keep only our servers in the rack.
My question is, from those who have plenty experience on different levels at different Mbps pricing, what is average and reasonable considering those 2 carriers? If I provide a rack, they will provide power, UPS, etc. Aside from that, I need advice on what to expect on the pricing of the bandwidth.
I may also end up using my own Cisco switch in the rack, I haven't cleared that up yet.
If I start off @ 10 Mbps in the rack, and work up, about where should this be on BW pricing?

After setting up a new server on Plesk12, I successfully ran some test mail outs using phpmailer using the SMTP server on this machine
However, there was an issue in creating new local mail accounts in plesk with an error message each time.
Investigating this issue led me to a solution that I should run mail_restore from the Plesk scripts
This cured the problem of setting up new local accounts but outgoing SMTP mail is always failing with 'relay access denied'.

I've been looking around for hosts with atleast 3mbps dedicated uplink. A shared port but with still a decently fast connection would be good too(incase you tried hosting there and the connection was good than tell me about it).
I tried netrackservers.com so far and they claimed to have 100mbps connection or something like that but it was extremely slow.
