Transferring A Site To Site5 - Any Other Host Recs

May 25, 2009

I'm trying to transfer a site(that I did not create) that is written in PHP4 and uses global variables from MediaTemple as we have been having extremely slow performance over the last 6 months. The site is database drive and uses an SSL certificate with PayQuake to handle membership.

We tried MediaLayer but had too many problems. Then I placed a copy of my own test site on Site5 and it all worked great. So, we created a new account and are trying to move the code over there.

Basically, I have functions (accordion menus) and a search function (the form isn't passing the field to the action URL) that are not working. Site5 isn't being very helpful. I'm getting extremely frustrated.

And yes, I know I should get rid of the globals but it's a complicated site and we want to get it moved before we start messing with the code.

Is there a webhosting company out there that is helpful in getting these kinds of weird issues straightened out? Or do I just need to slog through? I'm a programmer (ASP, .NET, Java, PHP) but my weakness is in configuration of servers - the whole hardware/network side of things so I'm not great with the intricacies of web server hosting.

Transferring Hosting Plus New Site

May 1, 2009

I have agreed to update website A (with url A) on host A. Both are rubbish.

I would like to build the new site with host B for various reasons (essentially I want / need more than one 50Mb database).

If I build the new site B on host B under a temporary URL, I'll then need to transfer the domain from host A to host B. So my questions are:

How easy is it to transfer url A to host B and to point to site B? What will happen to the approx. 70 email addresses on host A? Will I have to manually recreate them at host B and any emails stored on the server will be lost?

Transferring Site To New Server

Jul 8, 2008

I have read another recently created thread about their woes but this is a separate issue so I figured it deserved a separate thread.

Here is my problem.

I am transferring my site, osrec.com from my old server to
Hostgator.

The old server is quite primitive and I am using this piece of crap:

Matrix Hosting Appliance Control Panel v2.0-33

I have hardly any control or options.

I am using Joomla 1.5....but my concern is that the MYSQL database will not be compatible.

I am also concerned about downtime...What if they transfer and it isn't compatible, am I then stuck with a site that won't function properly. Is there a way of transferring it to another domain hosted with Hostgator first?

Has anyone transferred a Joomla site over to Hostgator? have you any advice?

I know, a lot of questions and not really structured. Fact is, I have never experienced this before and so this is my first time facing it.

I'd contact Hostgator, but....ya know...their technical support is useless.

Best Host For A Blog Site- Register With 1&1 And Host With Godaddy

May 27, 2008

with this being my first website goddady's website tonight or there blog site plan seem pretty good as I do not know how to build a professional looking website nor do I have a knowledge of HTML. Are there other hosts that offer better services such as these?

Also I would want to register with 1&1 as to register privately is free but with godaddy it costs around $15 and I've heard of godaddy stealing persons domains when they haven't even expired yet i.e. familyAlbum.com?

Is it allowed for instance to register my domain name with 1&1 and host my site with godaddy?

Host For A Kid's Site

Apr 27, 2008

I'm going to be extremely blunt and start off that although I'm not an unintelligent person, I'm very dumb when it comes to hosting and the lingo. So I would really appreciate the "Hosting for Dummies" version to find a good host

The closest I can show in what I am building with my partner is HERE (which claims to have had 90Million pageviews/month last year) Just basically a teen game and graphic site. It will be mostly flash games, php, various other scripts and forums.

I'm confident in saying they don't use shared hosting at least. Though what it is exactly I don't know. There is no way I'd get a dedicated server to begin with till we need it. I'm not sure what else a site like this requires (perhaps unlimited mySQL?) for a shared hosting plan. I was looking at HostMonster, Hostgator and Bluehost. I need good customer support for sure, I've had too many crap hosts in the past. I also need multiple domains (4-5)

In sum, does the shared hosting even matter at this point, or should I come back when we're in need of dedicated? I'm guessing cp usage will be the first to give out?

How To Host A Site On A Server

Jun 5, 2009

I've a site running at my localhost with Apache/Tomcat server, pages are mostly jsp.

I've used Oracle as the database but i'm currently migrating it to MySQL. I've used the

Struts framework. And i'm planning to add AJAX to it in coming days.

So, the whole thing is up and working on my local machine, how do i host it on a server so that its available in the internet?

Which hosting service is required for this kind of website?

How do i choose a hosting service?

And the most important of all, how to deploy and make the code running in the remote server.

I'm planning to go for a shared server for the moment.

Moved To New Host Yet Sometimes See 'old' Site.

Jun 24, 2009

I recently moved a site from one hosting company to another. I went to the registrar and pointed the DNS at the new nameservers, and set up a new ftp account to upload the site. The DNS seemed to resolve ok after a few hours, (in my browser I was seeing the new host's default home page) so I uploaded the site to the new host.

Today sometimes I see the new site and sometimes the old!

I'll be editing pages and uploading them by ftp, then suddenly I'll see a different directory structure on the remote server. Similarly I'll refresh my browser while looking at the new site and... Hey! I'm seeing the page on the old site!

I've cleared the browser cache on my machine btw.

My guess is that either a server somewhere in the path (at my local service provider?) is throwing out old cached versions of the page, perhaps when it is busy, or that not all the nameserver/dns records have updated.

Can't Access My Web Site, Host Says It's My ISP

Feb 25, 2008

Can't access my web site, my web host says it's my ISP.

My WebHost said "It seems that your ISP cannot resolve the domain".

Can an ISP have any control over the accessibility of individual domains?

That's sounds a little strange to me.

My ISP support is currently closed, but I suspect they'll tell me to contact my web host.

I was able to access it earlier today.

What do you think? Is the ISP theory possible?

Host For Video Site

Aug 20, 2008

I'm a university designer trying to find hosting for a video textbook. I have about 330MB of videos framed in a single swf/html/js page.

Our course is about 300 students, and we'd expect the site to be largely dormant except for traffic spikes right before exams, when everyone will want to access the material.

We know nothing about linux images or server maintenance or anything required to use an unmanaged VPS. I'm mostly just concerned about having enough bandwidth not to upset ToS, but I'm unsure of what this actually translates to. Any hosting advice would be extremely appreciated, from specs we should look for to specific hosts. We're lost fishies!

Picking A Web Host For First Site

Mar 29, 2008

I have plans os doing a NSFW site very soon and am trying to gather as much information about all aspects of what it takes before getting this project off the ground. I know a fair bit of what it will take and I have a web designer set up, ect but I need help picking a web host. I really dont know much about what I am looking for and what I expect the site to do (traffic wise) because it will be my first site. It is going to have videos hosted from other sites but maybe eventually in the future I may host some myself. For the time being, I need to know what do I need in a good host to handle a page that basically just has videos on it. I'm leaning towards Lunar Pages as I have some friends that use them and are satisfied but dont know what I would really need as far as basic hosting, VPS, dedicated servers ect. This part is very new to me! Can anyone give me some advice as to what I should be looking for and and recommendations? I plan on hosting from a hosting company and getting a domain from a domain registrar to keep the seperate.

Site5 Down This Morning?

Site5 appears to have suffered a major DNS hit. DNS.SITE5.com and DNS2.SITE5.COM are both down, they respond to ping but not to any DNS lookups. All my sites/email are down. Even www.site5.com is dead.

I can FTP into my site's IP address and see all the files are there (whew) so hopefully once DNS comes back everything will be OK again.

Anyone Use Site5.com Or Webhostingbuzz.com

Aug 27, 2008

Thinking about migrating a couple of blogs over from blogger.com to a paid host, since I really want to migrate over to using wordpress. No, I do not want to use wordpress.com.

I've done a little research, and stumbled across site5.com and webhostingbuzz.com. I like them because they both have active user forums, and the basic hosting plans are very affordable, if you pay for a couple of years in advance. Site5.com seems to have gotten mixed reviews recently, since apparently they just merged with ThePlanet, guess that is another hosting company. Webhostingbuzz, interestingly enough, the servers are in the US, but the support is in the Ukraine. They have a really cheap price, potentially $3.95/month.

I've read through lots of online reviews and even this forum for advice. It's a bit overwhelming the amount of options out there. Just want to host a couple of blogs and small websites. And preferably, a cheap price, since I am hosting the sites right now for free on blogger.

Also considered hostgator.com, but they are a bit pricier.

Site5, We're Breaking Up With You

Oct 27, 2008

I have finally pulled the plug on Site5. Many of you know that they were in the process of migrating many of their older servers to hosting at ThePlanet. We got a notice on Sept 25 that ours was supposed to happen the week of Sept 29-Oct 3 (didn't happen!) and that ". One of the chat girls let it slip that we were migrated on Oct 10...(we weren't notified of our new IP!). As our old server "xxxxx.site5.com" was up and running, we didn't know of any trouble, and ran happily along with our site, updating databases, maintaining code, etc. Then they flipped the switch today on our old server. We were pretty much messed up for Friday afternoon through the weekend while we waited for them to finish their maintenance. The support guys who came in Monday A.M. tried to help, and explained that (unfortunately) both the new and the old servers had problems. I should say that they DID help. But it was too little too late.

Needless to say, I decided we'd had enough, as this was not our first issue with not getting support when we needed it...we migrated on Friday afternoon.
If you are looking for a good provider, search elsewhere, I'll be posting more info about where we went.

Site5 support is inadequate for the following reasons:

-support is only accessible by email or web form submission

-usually takes hours for a real person to respond even when subject includes the word "DOWN"

-customer is not able to escalate an issue, priority is at the whim of the responding technician.

I suggested some improvements to Brendan Diaz, CEO at Site5 after our last major ordeal in January. I think that they need to rethink and overhaul their support structure before they add any more clients to business hosting.

Good bye Site5, sorry it didn't work out.
